A zero range approach is used to model resonant two-body interactions between three identical bosons. A dimensionless phase parametrizes the three-body boundary condition while the scattering length enters the Bethe-Peierls boundary condition. The model is solved exactly at zero energy for any value of the scattering length, positive or negative. We revisit the problem of three identical bosons in free space, which exhibits a universal hierarchy of bound states (Efimov trimers). Modelling a narrow Feshbach resonance within a two-channel description, we map the integral equation for the three-body scattering amplitude to a one-dimensional Schr\"odinger-type single-particle equation, where an analytical solution of exponential accuracy is obtained. We derive a low-energy effective model of metallic zigzag carbon nanotubes at half filling. We show that there are three important features characterizing the low-energy properties of these systems: the long-range Coulomb interaction, umklapp scattering and an explicit dimerization generated by interactions. The ratio of the dimerization induced gap and the Mott gap induced by the umklapp interactions is dependent on the radius of the nanotube and can drive the system through a quantum phase transition with SU(2)_1 quantum symmetry. We analyse non-equilibrium transport properties of a single-state molecular quantum dot coupled to a local phonon and contacted by two electrodes. We derive the effective non-equilibrium (Keldysh) action for the phonon mode and study the structure of the saddle points, which turn out to be symmetric with respect to time inversion. Above a critical electron-phonon coupling lambda_c the effective potential for the phonon mode develops two minima in the equilibrium and three minima in the case of a finite bias voltage. For strongly interacting Luttinger liquid leads lambda_c=0. Some implications for transport experiments on molecular quantum dots are discussed., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures (eps files)

We investigate transport through a tunnelling junction between an uncorrelated metallic lead and a Luttinger liquid when the latter is subjected to a time dependent perturbation. The tunnelling current as well as the electron energy distribution function are found to be strongly affected by the perturbation due to generation of harmonics in the density oscillations. Using a semiconducting lead instead of a metallic one results in electrons being injected into the lead even without applied voltage. We investigate energy resolved electric current from various correlated host materials under out-of-equilibrium conditions. We find that, due to a combined effect of electron-electron interactions, non-equilibrium and multi-particle tunnelling, the energy resolved current is finite even above the Fermi edge of the host material. In most cases, the current density possesses a singularity at the Fermi level revealing novel manifestations of correlation effects in electron tunnelling. By means of the Keldysh non-equilibrium technique, the current density is calculated for one-dimensional interacting electron systems and for two-dimensional systems, both in the pure limit and in the presence of disorder. We then specialise to the field emission and provide a comprehensive theoretical study of this effect in carbon nanotubes., Comment: 22 pages, 8 figures (eps files)

We develop a theory for the field emission effect in Luttinger liquids and single-wall carbon nanotubes at the level of the energy resolved current distribution. We generalise Fowler-Nordheim relations. Just below the Fermi edge, we find a power-law vanishing current distribution with the density of states exponent. The current distribution above the Fermi edge owes its existence to a peculiar interplay of interactions and correlated tunnelling. We study the dynamical response of frustrated, quasi-one-dimensional spin-1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnets at finite temperatures. We allow for the presence of a Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. We concentrate on a model of weakly coupled planes of anisotropic triangular lattices. Combining exact results for the dynamical response of one dimensional Heisenberg chains with a Random Phase Approximation (RPA) in the frustrated interchain couplings, we calculate the dynamical susceptibility in the disordered phase. We investigate the instability of the disordered phase to the formation of collective modes. We find a very weak instability to the formation of incommensurate magnetic order and determine the ordering temperature and wave vector. We derive the phase diagram for the one-dimensional model of a ferroelectric perovskite recently introduced by Egami, Ishihara and Tachiki [Science, {\bf 261}, 1307 (1993)]. We show that the interplay between covalency, ionicity and strong correlations results in a spontaneously dimerized phase which separates the weak-coupling band insulator from the strong-coupling Mott insulator. The transition from the band insulator to the dimerized phase is identified as an Ising critical point. The charge gap vanishes at this single point with the optical conductivity diverging as $\sigma(\omega)\sim \omega^{-3/4}$. We study a one-dimensional model of disordered electrons (also relevant for random spin chains), which exhibits a delocalisation transition at half-filling. Exact probability distribution functions for the Wigner time and transmission coefficient are calculated. We identify and distinguish those features of probability densities that are due to rare, trapping configurations of the random potential from those which are due to the proximity to the delocalisation transition., Comment: 4 pages, RevTeX, 1 fig

We develop a low-energy effective theory for spin-1/2 frustrated two-leg Heisenberg spin ladders. We obtain a new type of interchain coupling that breaks parity symmetry. In the presence of an XXZ-type anisotropy, this interaction gives rise to a novel ground state, characterized by incommensurate correlations. In the case of a single ladder, this state corresponds to a spin nematic phase. For a frustrated quasi-one-dimensional system of infinitely many weakly coupled chains, this state develops true three dimensional spiral order. We derive the effective low-energy theory for single-wall carbon nanotubes including the Coulomb interactions among electrons. The generic model found here consists of two spin-1/2 fermion chains which are coupled by the interaction. We analyze the theory using bosonization, renormalization-group techniques, and Majorana refermionization. The influence of nonmagnetic doping on the thermodynamic properties of two-leg S = 1/2 spin ladders is studied in this paper. It is shown that, for a weak interchain coupling, the problem can be mapped onto a model of random mass Dirac (Majorana) fermions. We investigate in detail the structure of the fermionic states localized at an individual mass kink (zero modes) in the framework of a generalized Dirac model. The low-temperature thermodynamic properties are dominated by these zero modes. We use the single-fermion density of states, known to exhibit the Dyson singularity in the zero-energy limit, to construct the thermodynamics of the spin ladder. In particular, we find that the magnetic susceptibility $\chi$ diverges at $T\to 0$ as $1/T\ln^2(1/T)$, and the specific heat behaves as $C\propto 1/\ln^3(1/T)$. The predictions on magnetic susceptibility are consistent with the most recent results of quantum Monte Carlo simulations on doped ladders with randomly distributed impurities. Quasi-one-dimensional spin-Peierls and spin-ladder systems are characterized by a gap in the spin-excitation spectrum, which can be modeled at low energies by that of Dirac fermions with a mass. In the presence of disorder these systems can still be described by a Dirac fermion model, but with a random mass. Some peculiar properties, like the Dyson singularity in the density of states, are well known and attributed to creation of low-energy states due to the disorder. We take one step further and study single-particle correlations by means of Berezinskii's diagram technique. We find that, at low energy $\epsilon$, the single-particle Green function decays in real space like $G(x,\epsilon) \propto (1/x)^{3/2}$. It follows that at these energies the correlations in the disordered system are strong -- even stronger than in the pure system without the gap. Additionally, we study the effects of boundaries on the local density of states. We find that the latter is logarithmically (in the energy) enhanced close to the boundary. This enhancement decays into the bulk as $1/\sqrt{x}$ and the density of states saturates to its bulk value on the scale $L_\epsilon \propto \ln^2 (1/\epsilon)$. This scale is different from the Thouless localization length $\lambda_\epsilon\propto\ln (1/\epsilon)$. We report the exact calculation of the Fermi-edge singularity exponent for correlated electrons in one dimension (Luttinger liquid). Focusing on the special interaction parameter g=1/2, the asymptotic long-time behavior can be obtained using the Wiener-Hopf method. The result confirms the previous assumption of an open boundary fixed point. In addition, a dynamic k-channel Kondo impurity is studied via Abelian bosonization for k=2 and k=4. It is shown that the corresponding orthogonality exponents are related to the orthogonality exponent in a Luttinger liquid., Comment: 8 Pages RevTeX, no figures

In a recent Physical Review Letter, Oreg and Finkel'stein (OF) have calculated the electron density of states (DOS) for tunneling into a repulsive Luttinger liquid close to the location of an impurity. The result of their calculation is a DOS which is enhanced with respect to the pure system, and moreover diverging for not too strong repulsion. In this Comment we intend to show that OF's calculation suffers from a subtle flaw which, being corrected, results into a DOS not only vanishing at zero frequency but in fact suppressed in comparison with the DOS of a pure Luttinger liquid., Comment: 1 page, Revtex

We discuss the properties of interacting electrons on a finite chain with open boundary conditions. We extend the Haldane Luttinger liquid description to these systems and study how the presence of the boundaries modifies various correlation functions. In view of possible experimental applications to quantum wires, we analyse how tunneling measurements can reveal the underlying Luttinger liquid properties. We analyze the structure of the perturbation expansion of the general multichannel Kondo model with channel anisotropic exchange couplings and in the presence of an external magnetic field, generalizing to this case the Anderson-Yuval technique. For two channels, we are able to map the Kondo model onto a generalized resonant level model. Limiting cases in which the equivalent resonant level model is solvable are identified. We show that the spin dynamics of the 4--channel Kondo model is equivalent to the one of a model with a spin 1/2 impurity coupled to spin 1 conduction electrons. By abelian bosonization of the latter model we find a kind of Toulouse limit analogous to that recently discussed by Emery and Kivelson for the 2--channel case. We analyse the model by exploiting the close analogy to the problem of an impurity in the Luttinger liquid., Comment: REVTeX

The general expression for the persistent current of 1D noninteracting electrons in a disorder potential with smooth scattering data is derived for zero temperature. On the basis of this expression the parity effects are discussed.
