2. Reticent Students in the ESL Classrooms

Abstract

Reticence has always been regarded as a problematic phenomenon among students in the ESL classrooms. Many instructors have expressed their frustrations to decode the reticent behaviour and work out suitable strategies to help students with such behaviour. Whenever such students do not engage in the classroom discourse, they are usually regarded as not having the desire to learn or lacking in cooperation. These explanations seem simplistic, bias and stereotypical. Based on a larger project on students' reticent behaviour, this study investigated the extent in which tertiary students majoring in English experience reticence in the classrooms, and examined the underlying factors of reticence. Data were obtained from 78 students utilizing the Reticence Scale-12 (RS-12) which measures the level of reticence along six dimensions: anxiety, knowledge, timing, organization, skills and memory. The findings reveal that reticent level is high among the students, and their major problems lie in affective-control and delivery.

3. SO(10) Symmetry Breaking and Type II Seesaw

Abstract

A minimal SO(10) model with {\bf 126} Higgs field breaking B-L symmetry has been shown recently to predict large solar and atmospheric mixings in agreement with observations if it is assumed that the neutrino mass follows from the triplet dominated type II seesaw formula. No additional symmetries need to be assumed for this purpose. We discuss the conditions on the way SO(10) symmetry breaks down to MSSM and the Higgs multiplets in the model, required for the triplet dominated type II seesaw formula to hold. We find that (i) SO(10) must break to a nonminimal SU(5) before breaking to the standard model; (ii) $B-L$ symmetry must break at the time of SO(10) breaking and (iii) constraints of unification seem to require that the minimal model must have a {\bf 54} dimensional Higgs field together with a {\bf 210} and {\bf 126} to break the GUT symmetry., Comment: 19 pages, one figure

4. Proton Decay in a Minimal SUSY SO(10) Model for Neutrino Mixings

Abstract

A minimal renormalizable SUSY SO(10) model with B-L symmetry broken by {\bf 126} Higgs field has recently been shown to predict all neutrino mixings and the ratio $\Delta m^2_{\odot}/\Delta m^2_A$ in agreement with observations. Unlike models where B-L is broken by {\bf 16} Higgs, this model guarantees automatic R-parity conservation and hence a stable dark matter as well as the absence of dim=4 baryon violating operator without any additional symmetry assumptions. In this paper, we discuss the predictions of the model for proton decay induced at the GUT scale. We scan over the parameter space of the model allowed by neutrino data and find upper bounds on the partial lifetime for the modes $\tau(n\to \pi^0\bar{\nu})=~2\tau(p\to \pi^+\bar{\nu})\leq (5.7-13)\times 10^{32}$ yrs and $\tau(n\to K^0\bar{\nu})\leq 2.97\times 10^{33}$ yrs for the average squark mass of a TeV and wino mass of 200 GeV, when the parameters satisfy the present lower limits on $\tau(p\to K^+\bar{\nu})$ mode. 5. Minimal SUSY SO(10) model and predictions for neutrino mixings and leptonic CP violation

Abstract

We discuss a minimal Supersymmetric SO(10) model where B-L symmetry is broken by a {\bf 126} dimensional Higgs multiplet which also contributes to fermion masses in conjunction with a {\bf 10} dimensional superfield. This minimal Higgs choice provides a partial unification of neutrino flavor structure with that of quarks and has been shown to predict all three neutrino mixing angles and the solar mass splitting in agreement with observations, provided one uses the type II seesaw formula for neutrino masses. In this paper we generalize this analysis to include arbitrary CP phases in couplings and vevs. We find that (i) the predictions for neutrino mixings are similar with $U_{e3}\simeq 0.18$ as before and other parameters in a somewhat bigger range and (ii) that to first order in the quark mixing parameter $\lambda$ (the Cabibbo angle), the leptonic mixing matrix is CP conserving. We also find that in the absence of any higher dimensional contributions to fermion masses, the CKM phase is different from that of the standard model implying that there must be new contributions to quark CP violation from the supersymmetry breaking sector. Abstract

We show that the assumption of type II seesaw mechanism for small neutrino masses coupled with $b-\tau$ mass unification in a minimal SUSY SO(10) model leads not only to a natural understanding of large atmospheric mixing angle ($\theta_{23}$) among neutrinos, as recently pointed out, but also to large solar angle ($\theta_{12}$) and a small $\theta_{13}\equiv U_{e3}$ as required to fit observations. This is therefore a minimal, completely realistic grand unified model for all low energy observations that naturally explains the diverse mixing patterns between the quark and leptons without any additional inputs such as extra global symmetries. The proposed long baseline neutrino experiments will provide a crucial test of this model since it predicts $U_{e3}\simeq 0.16$ for the allowed range of parameters., Comment: 15 pages, latex, 3 figures, UMD-PP-03-039

Abstract

As neutrino experiments are starting to probe the detailed structure of the neutrino mass matrix, we present sumrules relating its matrix elements for a class of models with approximate $L_e-L_{\mu}-L_{\tau}$ symmetry and the observables in neutrino oscillation experiments. We show that regardless of how the above symmetry is broken (whether in the neutrino sector or the charged lepton sector), as long as the breaking terms are small, there is a lower bound on the solar neutrino mixing angle, $sin^22\theta_{\odot}$, correlated with the solar mass difference square, $\Delta m^2_{\odot}$, or the mixing parameter, $U_{e3}$. Abstract

We examine the constraints imposed by the requirement of successful big bang nucleosynthesis on models with one large extra dimension and a single bulk neutrino. We solve the Boltzman kinetic equations for the thermal distribution of bulk neutrino modes and evaluate their contribution to the energy density of the universe at the BBN epoch. Abstract

Molecular studies have suggested that ethnicity may play a significant role in prostate tumorigenesis, but no information exists for groups other than Caucasian or Japanese patients. We examined 62 archival samples of prostate tumours from Asians of non-Japanese origin for the over-expression of p53, for the possible presence of mutatedras genes, for the overexpression of the bcl-2 and bax proteins, as well as directly for the presence of apoptotic cells by the TUNEL methodology. Gene lesions of bothras (0%) and p53 (3%) were rare. While bcl-2 expression was not observed in any sample, bax expression was noted in 76% of samples and was associated with a significantly worse patient prognosis both overall (P < 0.005) and specifically in Chinese patients (P < 0.02). Apoptotic cells were found in 61% of samples, and were significantly associated with the presence of bax expression (P = 0.002), but not patient survival. These results suggest that prostate tumours from non-Japanese Asians are genetically distinct from prostate tumour found in both Japanese and Caucasian patients, and that treatment modalities may need to be tailored for specific population groups.
