Mars, Venus and Earth are expected to have started in a hot molten state. Here, we discuss how these three terrestrial planets diverged in their evolution and what mechanisms could be the cause. We discuss that early-on after magma ocean crystallization the mantle/surface redox state and water inventory may already differ considerably, depending on planetary mass and orbital distance from the Sun. During the subsequent internal evolution, the three planets also diverged in terms of their tectonic regime, affecting the long-term planetary evolution via heat flux and outgassing rate, and possibly the physical state of their respective core and the onset and end of a planetary dynamo. We discuss how, throughout the evolution of these rocky planets, the dominant process for atmospheric loss would shift from hydrodynamic escape and impact erosion to non-thermal escape, where small terrestrial planets like Mars are here more vulnerable to volatile loss., Comment: Accepted for publication in Treatise on Geochemistry, 3rd

After decades of relative neglect, interest in Venus surges anew in the planetary science community and the public. New missions are planned and selected, and will pave the way to the decade of Venus, as new observations allow us to uncover some of the many mysteries our closest Solar System neighbor still harbors. Building on the legacy of past works, here, we discuss the state of our understanding of Venus, from both observation and modeling. We describe each of the envelopes of the planet, from its atmosphere to its interior with an eye for the most recent advances and current topics of interest. We then briefly discuss coupled modelling efforts to better constrain the evolution of the planet. Finally, we describe how the upcoming missions and concepts will further lift the veil on Venus' secrets.

A giant impact is commonly thought to explain the dramatic contrast in elevation and crustal thickness between the two hemispheres of Mars known as the "Martian Dichotomy". Initially, this scenario referred to an impact in the northern hemisphere that would lead to a huge impact basin (dubbed the "Borealis Basin"), while more recent work has instead suggested a hybrid origin that produces the Dichotomy through impact-induced crust-production. The majority of these studies have relied upon impact scaling-laws inaccurate at such large-scales, however, and those that have included realistic impact models have utilised over-simplified geophysical models and neglected any material strength. Here we use a large suite of strength-including smoothed-particle hydrodynamics (SPH) impact simulations coupled with a more sophisticated geophysical scheme of crust production and primordial crust to simultaneously investigate the feasibility of a giant impact on either hemisphere of Mars to have produced its dichotomous crust distribution, and utilise spherical harmonic analysis to identify the best-fitting cases. We find that the canonical Borealis-forming impact is not possible without both excessive crust production and strong antipodal effects not seen on Mars' southern hemisphere today. Our results instead favour an impact and subsequent localised magma ocean in the southern hemisphere that results in a thicker crust than the north upon crystallisation. Specifically, our best-fitting cases suggest that the projectile responsible for the Dichotomy-forming event was of radius 500-750 km, and collided with Mars at an impact angle of 15-30{\deg} with a velocity of 1.2-1.4 times mutual escape speed ($\sim$6-7 km/s)., Comment: Accepted for publication in Icarus

This work reviews the long-term evolution of the atmosphere of Venus, and modulation of its composition by interior-exterior cycling. The formation and evolution of Venus's atmosphere, leading to contemporary surface conditions, remain hotly debated topics, and involve questions that tie into many disciplines. We explore these various inter-related mechanisms which shaped the evolution of the atmosphere, starting with the volatile sources and sinks. Going from the deep interior to the top of the atmosphere, we describe volcanic outgassing, surface atmosphere interactions, and atmosphere escape. Furthermore, we address more complex aspects of the history of Venus, including the role of Late Accretion impacts, how magnetic field generation is tied into long-term evolution, and the implications of geochemical and geodynamical feedback cycles for atmospheric evolution. We highlight plausible end-member evolutionary pathways that Venus could have followed, from accretion to its present-day state, based on modeling and observations. In a first scenario, the planet was desiccated by atmospheric escape during the magma ocean phase. In a second scenario, Venus could have harbored surface liquid water for long periods of time, until its temperate climate was destabilized and it entered a runaway greenhouse phase. In a third scenario, Venus's inefficient outgassing could have kept water inside the planet, where hydrogen was trapped in the core and the mantle was oxidized. We discuss existing evidence and future observations and missions required to refine our understanding of the planet's history and of the complex feedback cycles between the interior, surface, and atmosphere that have been operating in the past, present or future of Venus.

Geochemical and astronomical evidence demonstrate that planet formation occurred in two spatially and temporally separated reservoirs. The origin of this dichotomy is unknown. We use numerical models to investigate how the evolution of the solar protoplanetary disk influenced the timing of protoplanet formation and their internal evolution. Migration of the water snow line can generate two distinct bursts of planetesimal formation that sample different source regions. These reservoirs evolve in divergent geophysical modes and develop distinct volatile contents, consistent with constraints from accretion chronology, thermo-chemistry, and the mass divergence of inner and outer Solar System. Here, we develop scaling laws for (1) the distribution of impact-induced heat within the mantle and (2) shape of the impact-induced melt based on more than 100 smoothed particle hydrodynamic (SPH) simulations. We use Legendre polynomials to describe these scaling laws and determine their coefficients by linear regression, minimizing the error between our model and SPH simulations. The input parameters are the impact angle $\theta$ ($0^{\circ}, 30^{\circ}, 60^{\circ}$, and $90^{\circ}$), total mass $M_T$ ($1M_{\rm Mars}-53M_{\rm Mars}$, where $M_{\rm Mars}$ is the mass of Mars), impact velocity $v_{\rm imp}$ ($v_{\rm esc} - 2v_{\rm esc}$, where $v_{\rm esc}$ is the mutual escape velocity), and impactor-to-total mass ratio $\gamma$ ($0.03-0.5$). We find that the equilibrium pressure at the base of a melt pool can be higher (up to $\approx 80 \%$) than those of radially-uniform global magma ocean models. This could have a significant impact on element partitioning. In contrast to the water-poor inner solar system planets, stochasticity during planetary formation and order of magnitude deviations in exoplanet volatile contents suggest that rocky worlds engulfed in thick volatile ice layers are the dominant family of terrestrial analogues among the extrasolar planet population. However, the distribution of compositionally Earth-like planets remains insufficiently constrained, and it is not clear whether the solar system is a statistical outlier or can be explained by more general planetary formation processes. Here we employ numerical models of planet formation, evolution, and interior structure, to show that a planet's bulk water fraction and radius are anti-correlated with initial $^{26}$Al levels in the planetesimal-based accretion framework. The heat generated by this short-lived radionuclide rapidly dehydrates planetesimals prior to accretion onto larger protoplanets and yields a system-wide correlation of planet bulk abundances, which, for instance, can explain the lack of a clear orbital trend in the water budgets of the TRAPPIST-1 planets. The short-lived $^{182}$Hf-$^{182}$W decay system is a powerful chronometer for constraining the timing of metal-silicate separation and core formation in planetesimals and planets. Neutron capture effects on W isotopes, however, significantly hamper the application of this tool. In order to correct for neutron capture effects, Pt isotopes have emerged as a reliable in-situ neutron dosimeter. This study applies this method to IAB iron meteorites, in order to constrain the timing of metal segregation on the IAB parent body. The $\epsilon^{182}$W values obtained for the IAB iron meteorites range from -3.61 $\pm$ 0.10 to -2.73 $\pm$ 0.09. Correlating $\epsilon^{\mathrm{i}}$Pt with $^{182}$W data yields a pre-neutron capture $^{182}$W of -2.90 $\pm$ 0.06. This corresponds to a metal-silicate separation age of 6.0 $\pm$ 0.8 Ma after CAI for the IAB parent body, and is interpreted to represent a body-wide melting event. Later, between 10 and 14 Ma after CAI, an impact led to a catastrophic break-up and subsequent reassembly of the parent body. Thermal models of the interior evolution that are consistent with these estimates suggest that the IAB parent body underwent metal-silicate separation as a result of internal heating by short-lived radionuclides and accreted at around 1.4 $\pm$ 0.1 Ma after CAIs with a radius of greater than 60 km., Comment: 11 pages, 8 figures, 2 tables; open access article under the CC BY-NC-ND license (see http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/4.0/)

Rocky planetesimals in the early solar system melted internally and evolved chemically due to radiogenic heating from Al-26. Here we quantify the parametric controls on magma genesis and transport using a coupled petrological and fluid mechanical model of reactive two-phase flow. We find the mean grain size of silicate minerals to be a key control on magma ascent. For grain sizes larger than $\approx$ 1 mm, melt segregation produces distinct radial structure and chemical stratification. This stratification is most pronounced for bodies formed at around 1 Myr after formation of Ca,Al-rich inclusions. These findings suggest a link between the time and orbital location of planetesimal formation and their subsequent structural and chemical evolution. According to our models, the evolution of partially molten planetesimal interiors falls into two categories. In the magma ocean scenario, the whole interior of a planetesimal experiences nearly complete melting, which would result in turbulent convection and core-mantle differentiation by the rainfall mechanism. In the magma sill scenario, segregating melts gradually deplete the deep interior of the radiogenic heat source. In this case, magma may form melt-rich layers beneath a cool and stable lid, while core formation would proceed by percolation. Our findings suggest that grain sizes prevalent during the internal heating stage governed magma ascent in planetesimals. Regardless of whether evolution progresses toward a magma ocean or magma sill structure, our models predict that temperature inversions due to rapid Al-26 redistribution are limited to bodies formed earlier than $\approx$ 1 Myr after CAIs. Water content and the internal evolution of terrestrial planets and icy bodies are closely linked. The distribution of water in planetary systems is controlled by the temperature structure in the protoplanetary disk and dynamics and migration of planetesimals and planetary embryos. This results in the formation of planetesimals and planetary embryos with a great variety of compositions, water contents and degrees of oxidation. The internal evolution and especially the formation time of planetesimals relative to the timescale of radiogenic heating by short-lived 26Al decay may govern the amount of hydrous silicates and leftover rock-ice mixtures available in the late stages of their evolution. In turn, water content may affect the early internal evolution of the planetesimals and in particular metal-silicate separation processes. Moreover, water content may contribute to an increase of oxygen fugacity and thus affect the concentrations of siderophile elements within the silicate reservoirs of Solar System objects. Chondrules are the dominant bulk silicate constituent of chondritic meteorites and originate from highly energetic, local processes during the first million years after the birth of the Sun. So far, an astrophysically consistent chondrule formation scenario, explaining major chemical, isotopic and textural features, remains elusive. Here, we examine the prospect of forming chondrules from planetesimal collisions. We show that intensely melted bodies with interior magma oceans became rapidly chemically equilibrated and physically differentiated. Therefore, collisional interactions among such bodies would have resulted in chondrule-like but basaltic spherules, which are not observed in the meteoritic record. This inconsistency with the expected dynamical interactions hints at an incomplete understanding of the planetary growth regime during the protoplanetary disk phase. To resolve this conundrum, we examine how the observed chemical and isotopic features of chondrules constrain the dynamical environment of accreting chondrite parent bodies by interpreting the meteoritic record as an impact-generated proxy of planetesimals that underwent repeated collision and reaccretion cycles. Using a coupled evolution-collision model we demonstrate that the vast majority of collisional debris feeding the asteroid main belt must be derived from planetesimals which were partially molten at maximum. Therefore, the precursors of chondrite parent bodies either formed primarily small, from sub-canonical aluminum-26 reservoirs, or collisional destruction mechanisms were efficient enough to shatter planetesimals before they reached the magma ocean phase. Giant impacts have been suggested to explain various characteristics of terrestrial planets and their moons. However, so far in most models only the immediate effects of the collisions have been considered, while the long-term interior evolution of the impacted planets was not studied. Here we present a new approach, combining 3-D shock physics collision calculations with 3-D thermochemical interior evolution models. We apply the combined methods to a demonstration example of a giant impact on a Mars-sized body, using typical collisional parameters from previous studies. While the material parameters (equation of state, rheology model) used in the impact simulations can have some effect on the long-term evolution, we find that the impact angle is the most crucial parameter for the resulting spatial distribution of the newly formed crust. The results indicate that a dichotomous crustal pattern can form after a head-on collision, while this is not the case when considering a more likely grazing collision. The thermal history and internal structure of chondritic planetesimals, assembled before the giant impact phase of chaotic growth, potentially yield important implications for the final composition and evolution of terrestrial planets. These parameters critically depend on the internal balance of heating versus cooling, which is mostly determined by the presence of short-lived radionuclides (SLRs), such as aluminum-26 and iron-60, as well as the heat conductivity of the material. The heating by SLRs depends on their initial abundances, the formation time of the planetesimal and its size. It has been argued that the cooling history is determined by the porosity of the granular material, which undergoes dramatic changes via compaction processes and tends to decrease with time. In this study we assess the influence of these parameters on the thermo-mechanical evolution of young planetesimals with both 2D and 3D simulations. Using the code family I2ELVIS/I3ELVIS we have run numerous 2D and 3D numerical finite-difference fluid dynamic models with varying planetesimal radius, formation time and initial porosity. Our results indicate that powdery materials lowered the threshold for melting and convection in planetesimals, depending on the amount of SLRs present. A subset of planetesimals retained a powdery surface layer which lowered the thermal conductivity and hindered cooling. The effect of initial porosity was small, however, compared to those of planetesimal size and formation time, which dominated the thermo-mechanical evolution and were the primary factors for the onset of melting and differentiation.
