1. Electronic Wigner-Molecule Polymeric Chains in Elongated Silicon Quantum Dots and Finite-Length Quantum Wires

Abstract

The spectral properties of electrons confined in a wire-like quasi-one-dimensional (1D) elongated quantum dot (EQD) coupler between silicon qubits, are investigated with a newly developed valley-augmented unrestricted Hartree-Fock (va-UHF) method, generalized to include the valley degree of freedom treated as an isospin, allowing calculations for a large number of electrons. The lower energy symmetry-broken solutions of the self-consistent generalized Pople-Nesbet equations exhibit, for a confinement that has been modeled after an experimentally fabricated one in silicon, formation of Wigner-molecular polymeric (longitudinal) chains, initiating through charge accumulation at the edges of the finite-length quasi-1D wire. An increasing number of parallel zig-zag chains form as the number of electrons loaded into the confinement is increased, with the formation of newly added chains determined by the strength of the transverse harmonic confinement. The broken-symmetry va-UHF solutions, subsequently augmented by the quantum-mechanically required parity-restoration, go beyond the va-UHF single-determinant solution, predicting formation of entangled Wigner-molecular chains whose charge distributions obliterate the zig-zag organization of the broken-symmetry solutions. The symmetry-restored va-UHF methodology enables systematic investigations of multi-electron complex nano-scale confined structures that could be targeted for future imaging microscopy experiments in silicon and other materials (e.g., 1D domain walls in TMD materials), and quantum information utilization., Comment: 10 pages, 10 color figures. Abstract

Background: The standard approach to determine unique or shared genetic factors across populations is to identify risk alleles in one population and investigate replication in others. However, since populations differ in DNA sequence information, allele frequencies, effect sizes, and linkage disequilibrium patterns, SNP association using a uniform stringent threshold on p values may not be reproducible across populations. Here, we developed rank-based methods to investigate shared or population-specific loci and pathways for childhood asthma across individuals of diverse ancestry. We performed genome-wide association studies on 859,790 SNPs genotyped in 527 affected offspring trios of European, African, and Hispanic ancestry using publically available asthma database in the Genotypes and Phenotypes database. Results: Rank-based analyses showed that there are shared genetic factors for asthma across populations, more at the gene and pathway levels than at the SNP level. Although the top 1,000 SNPs were not shared, 11 genes (RYR2, PDE4D, CSMD1, CDH13, ROBO2, RBFOX1, PTPRD, NPAS3, PDE1C, SEMA5A, and CTNNA2) mapped by these SNPs were shared across populations. Ryanodine receptor 2 (RYR2, a statin response-related gene) showed the strongest association in European (p value = 2.55 x 10-7) and was replicated in African (2.57 x 10-4) and Hispanic (1.18 x 10-3) Americans. Imputation analyses based on the 1000 Genomes Project uncovered additional RYR2 variants associated with asthma. Network and functional ontology analyses revealed that RYR2 is an integral part of dermatological or allergic disorder biological networks, specifically in the functional classes involving inflammatory, eosinophilic, and respiratory diseases. Conclusion: Our rank-based genome-wide analysis revealed for the first time an association of RYR2 variants with asthma and replicated previously discovered PDE4D asthma gene across human populations. The replication of top-ranked asthma genes across populations suggests that such loci are less likely to be false positives and could indicate true associations. Variants that are associated with asthma across populations could be used to identify individuals who are at high risk for asthma regardless of genetic ancestry. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

49. The Efficacy of Nasal Surgery among Patients With and Without Allergies.

Abstract

Surgical intervention has been used widely for the correction of nasal obstruction. However, there are only a small number of studies confirming its advantages. This study summarizes our experience regarding patients' satisfaction with the operation results. We also examined whether the presence of allergic rhinitis can be used as a reliable predictive criterion for the operation outcome in an adult population. Fifty-three patients with perennial nasal obstruction who had been referred for nasal surgery under-went allergic evaluation. Patients with a positive skin-prick test to a perennial allergen were included in the allergic group, whereas those with a positive skin test to a seasonal allergen only or with negative skin tests were included in the nonallergic group. Patients filled out a symptom score before the operation and at 6 and 12 months after the operation and also were asked to grade their overall satisfaction with the outcome of the operation. One year after surgery, only 20 patients (38%) were definitely satisfied with its results. Twenty-eight patients (53%) were willing to undergo the same operation again had they known of its outcome in advance. There was no difference between the allergic and non-allergic groups regarding patient satisfaction or willingness to undergo the same operation again. We conclude that the allergic status of the patient is not an effective predictive criterion for the outcome of nasal surgery in patients with perennial nasal obstruc-tion. 50. The Effects of a Beta-2 Selective Adrenergic Agonist and a Beta-Nonselective Antagonist on Theophylline Clearance.

Abstract

Beta-adrenergic agonists and antagonists have been shown to alter theophylline pharmacokinetics. It was the purpose of this study to characterize further the effects that terbutaline and propranolol have on theophylline disposition. In nine healthy male volunteers, mean parameters for theophylline disposition did not change after four days of terbutaline (5 mg q8h). Theophylline clearance, however, did change within the subjects. Clearance increased in five subjects, decreased in three, and remained unchanged in one volunteer. Pretreatment with four days of terbutaline (5 mg q8h) and propranolol (60 mg q8h) significantly decreased mean theophylline clearance (60.1 ± 12.9 vs 40.6 ± 9.9 mL/min/1.73m2; P < .01) increased half-life (8.37 ± 1.77 vs 12.32 ± 2.70 hours; P < .05), and increased postinfusion theophylline concentration (13.5 ± 2.7 vs 18.95 ± 2.5 μg/mL; P < .001). In five subjects theophylline clearance increased after terbutaline pretreatment (64.6 ± 13.0 vs 75.0 ± 13.9 mL/min/1.73m2). The percentage increase ranged from 3.9 to 28.5%. These subjects were restudied after receiving propranolol alone (60 mg q8h). Comparison between the propranolol and terbutaline study and the propranolol alone study indicated no mean change in clearance in these five subjects (41.8 ± 12.7 vs 36.1 ± 5.1 mL/min/1.73m2). Thus it appears that the changes observed in these five subjects after terbutaline pretreatment may have been random in occurrence as has been shown to occur with theophylline disposition and are not related to terbutaline pretreatment. It is concluded that beta-2 adrenergic stimulation does not alter theophylline pharmacokinetics, whereas nonselective beta-adrenergic antagonism profoundly affected theophylline disposition.
