In recent years there has been renewed focus on workplace design and its impact on workers’ productivity and satisfaction, particularly in open plan offices. Extensive research has been conducted to date on the topic of Indoor Environmental Quality (IEQ). Here we sought to understand how perceived personal space is influenced by a number of variables that could influence IEQ; specifically, we tested how different levels of social density, spatial density, environmental noise presence, and type of view impact the appreciation of personal space in a shared office environment. We employed virtual reality (VR) technology to simulate shared and single occupancy offices and tested a sample of 60 participants over three experiments. We devised a novel measure of personal space estimation using a virtual disc around the participant which could be extended and retracted to indicate the perceived amount of personal space. We also used a traditional personal space satisfaction score. We found that participants experienced greater perceived personal space when 1) in a sparse rather than a dense office, 2) in a private office rather than an open plan office, and 3) having any view outside of the office. We did not find an effect of the presence of noise or increased social density (with spatial density held constant) on the perception of personal space. The results confirmed that simulated personal space in a VR environment can elicit natural, realistic responses of perceptions of spatial dimensions and that the features of the virtual office determine individual levels of personal space.

- Abstract
Objective: Previous studies have suggested that niacin treatment raises glucose levels in patients with diabetes and may increase the risk of developing diabetes. We undertook a meta-analysis of published and unpublished data from randomised trials to confirm whether an association exists between niacin and new-onset diabetes. Methods: We searched Medline, EMBASE and the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, from 1975 to 2014, for randomised controlled trials of niacin primarily designed to assess its effects on cardiovascular endpoints and cardiovascular surrogate markers. We included trials with ≥50 non-diabetic participants and average follow-up of ≥24 weeks. Published data were tabulated and unpublished data sought from investigators. We calculated risk ratios (RR) for new-onset diabetes with random-effects meta-analysis. Heterogeneity between trials was assessed using the I2 statistic. Results: In 11 trials with 26 340 non-diabetic participants, 1371 (725/13 121 assigned niacin; 646/13 219 assigned control) were diagnosed with diabetes during a weighted mean follow-up of 3.6 years. Niacin therapy was associated with a RR of 1.34 (95% CIs 1.21 to 1.49) for new-onset diabetes, with limited heterogeneity between trials (I2=0.0%, p=0.87). This equates to one additional case of diabetes per 43 (95% CI 30 to 70) initially non-diabetic individuals who are treated with niacin for 5 years. Results were consistent regardless of whether participants received background statin therapy (p for interaction=0.88) or combined therapy with laropiprant (p for interaction=0.52). Conclusions: Niacin therapy is associated with a moderately increased risk of developing diabetes regardless of background statin or combination laropiprant therapy.

- Abstract
The dynamics of tumour evolution are not well understood. In this paper we provide a statistical framework for evaluating the molecular variation observed in different parts of a colorectal tumour. A multi-sample version of the Ewens Sampling Formula forms the basis for our modelling of the data, and we provide a simulation procedure for use in obtaining reference distributions for the statistics of interest. We also describe the large-sample asymptotics of the joint distributions of the variation observed in different parts of the tumour. While actual data should be evaluated with reference to the simulation procedure, the asymptotics serve to provide theoretical guidelines, for instance with reference to the choice of possible statistics.

BACKGROUND: Few data are available regarding the use of antithrombotic strategies in coronary artery disease patients with atrial fibrillation (AF) in everyday practice. We sought to describe the prevalence of AF and its antithrombotic management in a contemporary population of patients with stable coronary artery disease.METHODS AND FINDINGS: CLARIFY is an international, prospective, longitudinal registry of outpatients with stable coronary artery disease, defined as prior (≥12 months) myocardial infarction, revascularization procedure, coronary stenosis >50%, or chest pain associated with evidence of myocardial ischemia. Overall, 33,428 patients were screened, of whom 32,954 had data available for analysis at baseline; of these 2,229 (6.7%) had a history of AF. Median (interquartile range) CHA2DS2-VASc score was 4 (3, 5). Oral anticoagulation alone was used in 25.7%, antiplatelet therapy alone in 52.8% (single 41.8%, dual 11.0%), and both in 21.5%. OAC use was independently associated with permanent AF (pCONCLUSIONS: In this contemporary cohort of patients with stable coronary artery disease and AF, most of whom are theoretical candidates for anticoagulation, oral anticoagulants were used in only 47.2%. Half of the patients received antiplatelet therapy alone and one-fifth received both antiplatelets and oral anticoagulants. Efforts are needed to improve adherence to guidelines in these patients.TRIAL REGISTRATION: ISRCTN registry of clinical trials: ISRCTN43070564.

AbstractIn this paper we give a simple proof of a limit theorem for the length of the largest interval straddling a fixed number of points that are independent and uniformly distributed on a unit interval. - Abstract
AbstractStarting with independent, identically distributed random variables X1,X2... and their partial sums (Sn), together with a nondecreasing sequence (b(n)), we consider the counting variable N=?n1(Sn>b(n)) and aim for necessary and sufficient conditions on X1in order to obtain the existence of certain moments for N, as well as for generalized counting variables with weights, and multi-index random variables. The existence of the first moment of Nwhen b(n)=en, i.e. ?n=18P(|Sn|>en)<8, corresponds to the notion of complete convergence as introduced by Hsu and Robbins in 1947 as a complement to Kolmogorov's strong law.

- Abstract
AbstractWe perform an analysis of the potential time inhomogeneity in the dependence between multiple financial time series. To this end, we use the framework of copula theory and tackle the question of whether dependencies in such a case can be assumed constant throughout time or rather have to be modeled in a time-inhomogeneous way. We focus on parametric copula models and suitable inference techniques in the context of a special copula-based multivariate time series model. A recent result due to Chan et al.(2009) is used to derive the joint limiting distribution of local maximum-likelihood estimators on overlapping samples. By restricting the overlap to be fixed, we establish the limiting law of the maximum of the estimator series. Based on the limiting distributions, we develop statistical homogeneity tests, and investigate their local power properties. A Monte Carlo simulation study demonstrates that bootstrapped variance estimates are needed in finite samples. Empirical analyses on real-world financial data finally confirm that time-varying parameters are an exception rather than the rule.

AbstractLet (X1,...,Xn) be multivariate normal, with mean vector 훍 and covariance matrix 횺, and let Sn=eX1+?+eXn. The Laplace transform L(?)=피e-?Sn??exp{-h?(풙)}d풙 is represented as L~(?)I(?), where L~(?) is given in closed form and I(?) is the error factor (˜1). We obtain L~(?) by replacing h?(풙) with a second-order Taylor expansion around its minimiser 풙*. An algorithm for calculating the asymptotic expansion of 풙*is presented, and it is shown that I(?)? 1 as ??8. A variety of numerical methods for evaluating I(?) is discussed, including Monte Carlo with importance sampling and quasi-Monte Carlo. Numerical examples (including Laplace-transform inversion for the density of Sn) are also given.

- Abstract
AbstractKuznetsov and co-authors in 2011?14 introduced the family of hypergeometric Lévy processes. They appear naturally in the study of fluctuations of stable processes when one analyses stable processes through the theory of positive self-similar Markov processes. Hypergeometric Lévy processes are defined through their characteristic exponent, which, as a complex-valued function, has four independent parameters. In 2014 it was shown that the definition of a hypergeometric Lévy process could be taken to include a greater range of the aforesaid parameters than originally specified. In this short article, we push the parameter range even further.

- Abstract
AbstractThe theory of influence and sharp threshold is a key tool in probability and probabilistic combinatorics, with numerous applications. One significant aspect of the theory is directed at identifying the level of generality of the product probability space that accommodates the event under study. We derive the influence inequality for a completely general product space, by establishing a relationship to the Lebesgue cube studied by Bourgain, Kahn, Kalai, Katznelson and Linial (BKKKL) in 1992. This resolves one of the assertions of BKKKL. Our conclusion is valid also in the setting of the generalized influences of Keller.

AbstractFollowing the approach of standard filtering theory, we analyse investor valuation of firms, when these are modelled as geometric-Brownian state processes that are privately and partially observed, at random (Poisson) times, by agents. Tasked with disclosing forecast values, agents are able purposefully to withhold their observations; explicit filtering formulae are derived for downgrading the valuations in the absence of disclosures. The analysis is conducted for both a solitary firm and mco-dependent firms.

- Abstract
AbstractFamously, a d-dimensional, spatially homogeneous random walk whose increments are nondegenerate, have finite second moments, and have zero mean is recurrent if d?{1,2}, but transient if d=3. Once spatial homogeneity is relaxed, this is no longer true. We study a family of zero-drift spatially nonhomogeneous random walks (Markov processes) whose increment covariance matrix is asymptotically constant along rays from the origin, and which, in any ambient dimension d=2, can be adjusted so that the walk is either transient or recurrent. Natural examples are provided by random walks whose increments are supported on ellipsoids that are symmetric about the ray from the origin through the walk's current position; these elliptic random walksgeneralize the classical homogeneous Pearson?Rayleigh walk (the spherical case). Our proof of the recurrence classification is based on fundamental work of Lamperti.

AbstractFor natural integer n, let Dndenote the random variable taking the values log dfor ddividing nwith uniform probability 1/t(n). Then t?P(Dn=nt) (0=t=1) is an arithmetic process with respect to the uniform probability over the first Nintegers. It is known from previous works that this process converges to a limit law and that the same holds for various extensions. We investigate the generalized moments of arbitrary orders for the limit laws. We also evaluate the mean value of the two-dimensional distribution function P(Dn=nu, D{n/Dn}=nv).

- Abstract
AbstractNatural disasters may have considerable impact on society as well as on the (re-)insurance industry. Max-stable processes are ideally suited for the modelling of the spatial extent of such extreme events, but it is often assumed that there is no temporal dependence. Only a few papers have introduced spatiotemporal max-stable models, extending the Smith, Schlather and Brown?Resnick spatial processes. These models suffer from two major drawbacks: time plays a similar role to space and the temporal dynamics are not explicit. In order to overcome these defects, we introduce spatiotemporal max-stable models where we partly decouple the influence of time and space in their spectral representations. We introduce both continuous- and discrete-time versions. We then consider particular Markovian cases with a max-autoregressive representation and discuss their properties. Finally, we briefly propose an inference methodology which is tested through a simulation study.

- Abstract
AbstractThe self-similar growth-fragmentation equation describes the evolution of a medium in which particles grow and divide as time proceeds, with the growth and splitting of each particle depending only upon its size. The critical case of the equation, in which the growth and division rates balance one another, was considered in Doumic and Escobedo (2015) for the homogeneous case where the rates do not depend on the particle size. Here, we study the general self-similar case, using a probabilistic approach based on Lévy processes and positive self-similar Markov processes which also permits us to analyse quite general splitting rates. Whereas existence and uniqueness of the solution are rather easy to establish in the homogeneous case, the equation in the nonhomogeneous case has some surprising features. In particular, using the fact that certain self-similar Markov processes can enter (0,8) continuously from either 0 or 8, we exhibit unexpected spontaneous generation of mass in the solutions.

28. Coupling the Kolmogorov diffusion: maximality and efficiency considerations

- Abstract
AbstractThis is a case study concerning the rate at which probabilistic coupling occurs for nilpotent diffusions. We focus on the simplest case of Kolmogorov diffusion (Brownian motion together with its time integral or, more generally, together with a finite number of iterated time integrals). We show that in this case there can be no Markovian maximal coupling. Indeed, there can be no efficientMarkovian coupling strategy (efficient for all pairs of distinct starting values), where the notion of efficiency extends the terminology of Burdzy and Kendall (2000). Finally, at least in the classical case of a single time integral, it is not possible to choose a Markovian coupling that is optimal in the sense of simultaneously minimizing the probability of failing to couple by time tfor all positive t. In recompense for all these negative results, we exhibit a simple efficient non-Markovian coupling strategy.

- Abstract
AbstractWe derive asymptotic theory for the extremogram and cross-extremogram of a bivariate GARCH(1,1) process. We show that the tails of the components of a bivariate GARCH(1,1) process may exhibit power-law behavior but, depending on the choice of the parameters, the tail indices of the components may differ. We apply the theory to five-minute return data of stock prices and foreign-exchange rates. We judge the fit of a bivariate GARCH(1,1) model by considering the sample extremogram and cross-extremogram of the residuals. The results are in agreement with the independent and identically distributed hypothesis of the two-dimensional innovations sequence. The cross-extremograms at lag zero have a value significantly distinct from zero. This fact points at some strong extremal dependence of the components of the innovations.

- Abstract
AbstractPreferential attachment is a widely adopted paradigm for understanding the dynamics of social networks. Formal statistical inference, for instance GLM techniques, and model-verification methods will require knowing test statistics are asymptotically normal even though node- or count-based network data are nothing like classical data from independently replicated experiments. We therefore study asymptotic normality of degree counts for a sequence of growing simple undirected preferential attachment graphs. The methods of proof rely on identifying martingales and then exploiting the martingale central limit theorems.

Background: Noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) are the leading cause of mortality worldwide and pose complex challenges in developing nations. Short-term medical trips, which often operate independently of government and pharmaceutical companies, are in a unique position to address NCDs in developing nations. In 2010, the Dominican Aid Society of Virginia shifted the focus of their semiannual clinic to addressing NCDs in Paraíso, Santo Domingo. Objective: This study analyzes the longitudinal impact of a short-term medical trip on the control of hypertension in their patient population. Methods: Returning patients were identified through a review of medical records from 2014 and 2016. A sample of patients who only visited in either 2014 or 2016 were matched on sex and age and served as an internal comparison group. A generalized linear mixed model was applied to assess changes in blood pressure, the proportion of patients receiving blood pressure treatment, and the intensity of blood pressure treatment within and between returning and new patients over the study period. Findings: There was a significant decrease in diastolic blood pressure within returning patients. Change in systolic blood pressure was significantly different between returning and new patients, with improvement in returning patients. There was a significant increase in the proportion of new patients receiving blood pressure treatment and a higher intensity of blood pressure treatment over time. The change in the proportion of patients receiving blood pressure treatment in the new patient group was significantly higher than that of the returning patient group. ConclusionsShort-term medical trips with a recurrent presence in a community may improve control of hypertension and other NCDs in developing nations. Further research into the impact that short-term medical trips may have on NCDs is needed.

A significant minority of patients in this study wanted more time with their doctor, The time actually spent was not always accurately perceived, but if the doctor spent more time then the patient said that they were more likely to comply with advice. The majority of patients were female, white, spoke good English, visited their doctors 2-7 times a year and attended with a physical problem. Emotional problems and older patients resulted in longer consultations. Active listening gave the impression of having more time. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

While actual data should be evaluated with reference to the simulation procedure, the asymptotics serve to provide theoretical guidelines, for instance with reference to the choice of possible statistics., 22 pages, 1 figure.
