A key hallmark of quantum Hall physics is the existence of topological chiral states at the system boundary. Signatures of these edge states have been experimentally observed in cold atoms by using different approaches, including notably that of ``synthetic dimension'' in which internal states are coupled together and reinterpreted as sites along an artificial spatial dimension. However, previous atomic synthetic dimension implementations have been limited to relatively small system sizes with inflexible boundaries. In this paper, we propose instead how to use a synthetic dimension of atomic trap states to observe chiral edge states in a large quantum Hall system with a tunable edge. We present numerical simulations for relevant experimental parameters, showing how this scheme may be used to probe the properties and robustness of the edge states to defects. Interacting bosons on a single plaquette threaded by a $\pi$-flux can spontaneously break time-reversal symmetry, resulting in a chiral loop current. Connecting such bosonic $\pi$-flux plaquettes in a dispersive configuration was recently shown to lead to long-range chiral order. Here, instead, we design a chain of $\pi$-flux plaquettes that exhibits an all-flat-bands single-particle energy spectrum and an extensive set of local symmetries. Using Elitzur's theorem, we show that these local symmetries prevent the emergence of long-range chiral order. Moreover, projecting the dynamics to a Creutz ladder model with an effective intra-rung interaction allows one to derive simple spin Hamiltonians capturing the ground state degeneracy and the low-energy excitations, and to confirm the absence of chiral order. Nevertheless, we show how to obtain gauge-invariant information from a mean-field approach, which explicitly break gauge-invaraince. Finally, we observe an ``impurity self-pinning'' phenomenon, when an extra boson is added on top of a ground state at integer filling, resulting in a non-dispersive density peak. Chiral Spin Liquids (CSL) are quantum spin analogs of electronic Fractional Chern Insulators. Their realizations on ultracold-atom or Rydberg-atom platforms remain very challenging. Recently, a setup of time-periodic modulations of nearest-neighbor Heisenberg couplings applied on an initial genuine spin liquid state on the square lattice has been proposed to stabilize a (Abelian) $\mathbb{Z}_2$ CSL phase. In the high-frequency limit, it was shown that time evolution can be described in terms of a static effective chiral Hamiltonian. Here we revisit this proposal and consider drives at lower frequency in a regime where the high-frequency Magnus expansion fails. We show that a Dynamical CSL (DCSL) is nevertheless stabilized in a finite range of frequency. The topological nature of this dynamical phase, as well as its instability below a critical frequency, is connected to specific features of the Floquet pseudo-energy spectrum. We also show that the DCSL can be represented faithfully by a two-dimensional time-periodic tensor network and, as in the static case, topological order is associated to a tensor gauge symmetry ($\mathbb{Z}_2$ in that case)., Comment: 11 pages, 6 figures, 2 tables

This work introduces a general theoretical framework, which expresses the topological invariants of two-dimensional Floquet systems in terms of tractable response functions: Building on the Sambe representation of periodically-driven systems, and inspired by the St\v{r}eda formula for static systems, we evaluate the flow of the unbounded Floquet density of states in response to a magnetic perturbation. This Floquet-St\v{r}eda response, which is a priori mathematically ill-defined, is regularized by means of a Ces\`aro summation method. As a key outcome of this approach, we relate all relevant Floquet winding numbers to simple band properties of the Floquet-Bloch Hamiltonian. These general relations indicate how the topological characterization of Floquet systems can be entirely deduced from the stroboscopic time-evolution of the driven system. Importantly, we identify two physically distinguishable contributions to the Floquet-St\v{r}eda response: a quantized flow of charge between the edge and the bulk of the system, and an 'anomalous' quantized flow of energy between the system and the driving field, which provides new insight on the physical origin of the anomalous edge states. As byproducts, our theory provides: a general relation between Floquet winding numbers and the orbital magnetization of Floquet-Bloch bands; a local marker for Floquet winding numbers, which allows to access Floquet topology in inhomogeneous samples; an experimental protocol to extract these Floquet winding numbers from density-measurements in the presence of an engineered bath; as well as general expressions for these topological invariants in terms of the magnetic response of the Floquet density of states, opening a route for the topological characterization of interacting Floquet systems., Comment: 32 pages, 15 figures

A mobile impurity immersed in a non-interacting Fermi sea is dressed by the gapless particle-hole excitations of the fermionic medium. This conventional Fermi-polaron setting is well described by the so-called ladder approximation, which consists in neglecting impurity-hole scattering processes. In this work, we analyze polaron formation in the context of insulating states of matter, considering increasing levels of correlation in the medium:~band insulators originating from external periodic potentials, spontaneously-formed charge density waves, and a Fermi-Hubbard system undergoing a metal-Mott insulator transition. The polaron spectral function is shown to exhibit striking signatures of the underlying fermionic background, such as the single-particle band gap, particle-hole symmetry and the transition to the Mott state. These signatures are identified within the framework of the Chevy ansatz, i.e. upon restricting the Hilbert space to single particle-hole excitations. Interestingly, we find that the ladder approximation is inaccurate in these band systems, due to the fact that the particle and hole scattering phase spaces are comparable. Immersing a mobile impurity in a quantum many-body environment can reveal fundamental properties of the background medium, hence providing a powerful probe of quantum matter. This approach is particularly intriguing when considering media with exotic properties, such as strongly-correlated phases and topological states of matter. In this work, we study the dressing of a mobile impurity interacting with a chiral mode, as provided by the edge of topological quantum matter. The resulting ''chiral polaron'' is characterized by an asymmetric spectral function, which reflects the chirality and group velocity of the topological edge mode and the drag experienced by the mobile impurity. We first build our theoretical understanding from an effective one-dimensional chiral model, which captures the hallmark signatures of the chiral polaron. We then demonstrate how this simple picture extends to realistic models of integer and fractional Chern insulator states, by adapting tensor-network methods to polaron spectroscopy. The search for Majorana excitations has seen tremendous efforts in recent years, ultimately aiming for their individual controllability in future topological quantum computers. A promising framework to realize such exotic Majorana fermions are topologically ordered non-Abelian phases of matter, such as certain fractional quantum Hall states. Quantum simulators provide unprecedented controllability and versatility to investigate such states, and developing experimentally feasible schemes to realize and identify them is of immediate relevance. Motivated by recent experiments, we consider bosons on coupled chains, subjected to a magnetic flux and experiencing Hubbard repulsion. At magnetic filling factor $\nu=1$, similar systems on cylinders have been found to host the non-Abelian Moore-Read Pfaffian state in the bulk. Here, we address the question whether more realistic few-leg ladders can host this exotic state and its chiral Majorana edge states. To this end, we perform extensive DMRG simulations and determine the central charge of the ground state. While we do not find any evidence of gapless Majorana edge modes in systems of up to six legs, exact diagonalization of small systems reveals evidence for the Pfaffian state in the entanglement structure. By systematically varying the number of legs and monitoring the appearance and disappearance of this signal, our work highlights the importance of finite-size effects for the realization of exotic states in experimentally realistic systems.

Fragmentation of an interacting Bose gas refers to the macroscopic occupation of a finite set of single-particle eigenstates. This phenomenon is related to the notion of particle-number squeezing in quantum optics, an exquisite property of quantum states that can offer metrological gain. So far, fragmentation has only been partially achieved in experiments involving a large number $N$ of bosons in few modes. Here, we introduce a practical and efficient scheme to prepare fragmented states in systems realizing the $L$-mode Bose-Hubbard model. We demonstrate how a large energy detuning between the modes can be used as a practical control parameter to successfully fragment a Bose gas over an extremely short preparation time. Applying an optimal-control approach within realistic experimental constraints, we obtain total fragmentation at a high filling factor, realizing $\ket{N/L,...,N/L}$ Fock states with hundreds of bosons in very few modes over a few tunneling times., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures plus supplementary. This pedagogical piece provides a surprisingly simple demonstration that the quantized Hall conductivity of correlated insulators is given by the many-body Chern number, a topological invariant defined in the space of twisted boundary conditions. In contrast to conventional proofs, generally based on the Kubo formula, our approach entirely relies on combining Kramers-Kronig relations and Fermi's golden rule within a circular-dichroism framework. Over the past decade, cavity solitons have attracted substantial attention for their rich dynamics and their myriad potential applications. Recently, there has been growing interest in understanding cavity solitons in systems of coupled resonators, where both new physics and applications can emerge. While numerous works have theoretically studied the interplay between cavity solitons and lattice topology, experimental demonstrations of cavity solitons in topological lattices remain elusive. Here, we experimentally realize cavity solitons in a Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) lattice and illustrate that the synergy between topology and soliton formation dynamics can induce soliton formation at the boundaries of a topological SSH lattice. The study of fractional Chern insulators and their exotic anyonic excitations poses a major challenge in current experimental and theoretical research. Quantum simulators, in particular ultracold atoms in optical lattices, provide a promising platform to realize, manipulate, and understand such systems with a high degree of controllability. Recently, an atomic $\nu=1/2$ Laughlin state has been realized experimentally for a small system of two particles on 4 by 4 sites. The next challenge concerns the preparation of Laughlin states in extended systems, ultimately giving access to anyonic braiding statistics or gapless chiral edge-states in systems with open boundaries. Here, we propose and analyze an experimentally feasible scheme to grow larger Laughlin states by connecting multiple copies of the already existing 4-by-4-system. First, we present a minimal setting obtained by coupling two of such patches, producing an extended 8-by-4-system with four particles. Then, we analyze different preparation schemes, setting the focus on two shapes for the extended system, and discuss their respective advantages: While growing strip-like lattices could give experimental access to the central charge, square-like geometries are advantageous for creating quasi-hole excitations in view of braiding protocols. We highlight the robust quantization of the fractional quasi-hole charge upon using our preparation protocol. We benchmark the performance of our patchwork preparation scheme by comparing it to a protocol based on coupling one-dimensional chains. We find that the patchwork approach consistently gives higher target-state fidelities, especially for elongated systems. The results presented here pave the way towards near-term implementations of extended Laughlin states in quantum gas microscopes and the subsequent exploration of exotic properties of topologically ordered systems in experiments., Comment: 18 pages, 21 figures

Immersing a mobile impurity into a many-body quantum system represents a theoretically intriguing and experimentally effective way of probing its properties.In this work, we study the polaron spectral function in various environments, within the framework of Fermi-Hubbard models. Inspired by possible realizations in cold atoms and semiconductor heterostructures, we consider different configurations for the background Fermi gas, including charge density waves, multiple Fermi seas and pair superfluids. While our calculations are performed using an exact-diagonalization approach, hence limiting our analysis to systems of few interacting Fermi particles, we identify robust spectral features supported by theoretical results. Relating the quantized Hall response of correlated insulators to many-body topological invariants is a key challenge in topological quantum matter. Here, we use Streda's formula to derive an expression for the many-body Chern number in terms of the single-particle interacting Green's function and its derivative with respect to a magnetic field. In this approach, we find that this many-body topological invariant can be decomposed in terms of two contributions, $N_3[G] + \Delta N_3[G]$, where $N_3[G]$ is known as the Ishikawa-Matsuyama invariant and where the second term involves derivatives of Green's function and the self energy with respect to the magnetic perturbation. As a by-product, the invariant $N_3[G]$ is shown to stem from the derivative of Luttinger's theorem with respect to the probe magnetic field. These results reveal under which conditions the quantized Hall conductivity of correlated topological insulators is solely dictated by the invariant $N_3[G]$, providing new insight on the origin of fractionalization in strongly-correlated topological phases., Comment: 6 pages

We present the successful realization of four-dimensional (4D) semimetal bands featuring tensor monopoles, achieved using superconducting quantum circuits. Our experiment involves the creation of a highly tunable diamond energy diagram with four coupled transmons, and the parametric modulation of their tunable couplers, effectively mapping momentum space to parameter space. This approach enables us to establish a 4D Dirac-like Hamiltonian with fourfold degenerate points. Moreover, we manipulate the energy of tensor monopoles by introducing an additional pump microwave field, generating effective magnetic and pseudo-electric fields and simulating topological parity magnetic effects emerging from the parity anomaly. Utilizing non-adiabatic response methods, we measure the fractional second Chern number for a Dirac valley with a varying mass term, signifying a nontrivial topological phase transition connected to a 5D Yang monopole. Our work lays the foundation for further investigations into higher-dimensional topological states of matter and enriches our comprehension of topological phenomena.

We show that lasing in flat band lattices can be stabilized by means of the geometrical properties of the Bloch states, in settings where the single-particle dispersion is flat in both its real and imaginary parts. We illustrate a general projection method and compute the collective excitations, which are shown to display a diffusive behavior ruled by quantum geometry through a peculiar coefficient involving gain, losses and interactions. Then, we analytically show that the phase dynamics display a surprising cancellation of the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang nonlinearity at the leading order. Because of the relevance of Kardar-Parisi-Zhang universality in one-dimensional geometries, we focus our study on the diamond chain and provide confirmation of these results through full numerical simulations., Comment: Added Ref. 17,18,22

Optical box traps for cold atoms offer new possibilities for quantum-gas experiments. Building on their exquisite spatial and temporal control, we propose to engineer system-reservoir configurations using box traps, in view of preparing and manipulating topological atomic states in optical lattices. First, we consider the injection of particles from the reservoir to the system: this scenario is shown to be particularly well suited to activate energy-selective chiral edge currents, but also, to prepare fractional Chern insulating ground states. Then, we devise a practical evaporative-cooling scheme to effectively cool down atomic gases into topological ground states. We address the Bose polaron problem of a mobile impurity interacting strongly with a host Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) through a Feshbach resonance. On the repulsive side at strong couplings, theoretical approaches predict two distinct polaron branches corresponding to attractive and repulsive polarons, but it remains unclear how the two are related. This is partly due to the challenges resulting from a competition of strongly attractive (destabilizing) impurity-boson interactions with weakly repulsive (stabilizing) boson-boson interactions, whose interplay is difficult to describe with contemporary theoretical methods. Here we develop a powerful variational framework that combines Gaussian correlations among impurity-boson scattering states, including up to an infinite number of bosonic excitations, with exact non-Gaussian correlations among bosons occupying an impurity-boson bound state. This variational scheme enables a full treatment of strong nonlinearities arising in the Feshbach molecule on the repulsive side of the resonance. Within this framework, we demonstrate that the interplay of impurity-induced instability and stabilization by repulsive boson-boson interactions results in a discrete set of metastable many-body bound states at intermediate energies between the attractive and repulsive polaron branches. These states exhibit strong quantum statistical characteristics in the form of non-Gaussian quantum correlations, requiring non-perturbative beyond mean-field treatments for their characterization. Furthermore, these many-body bound states have sizable molecular spectral weights, accessible via molecular spectroscopy techniques. This work explores the possibility of creating and controlling unconventional nonlinearities by periodic driving, in a broad class of systems described by the nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation (NLSE). By means of a parent quantum many-body description, we demonstrate that such driven systems are well captured by an effective NLSE with emergent nonlinearities, which can be finely controlled by tuning the driving sequence. We first consider a general class of two-mode nonlinear systems - relevant to optical Kerr cavities, waveguides and Bose-Einstein condensates - where we find an emergent four-wave mixing nonlinearity, which originates from pair-hopping processes in the parent quantum picture. Tuning this drive-induced nonlinearity is shown to modify the phase-space topology, which can be detected through relative population and phase measurements. We then couple individual (two-mode) dimers in view of designing extended lattice models with unconventional nonlinearities and controllable pair-hopping processes. Following this general dimerization construction, we obtain an effective lattice model with drive-induced interactions, whose ground-state exhibits orbital order, chiral currents and emergent magnetic fluxes through the spontaneous breaking of time-reversal symmetry. We analyze these intriguing properties both in the weakly-interacting (mean-field) regime, captured by the effective NLSE, and in the strongly-correlated quantum regime. We report an experimental and theoretical investigation of a system whose dynamics is dominated by an intricate interplay between three key concepts of modern physics: topology, nonlinearity, and spontaneous symmetry breaking. The experiment is based on a two-mode coherently-driven optical resonator in which photons interact through the Kerr nonlinearity. In presence of a phase defect between the modes, a nonlinear attractor develops, which confers a synthetic M\"obius topology to the modal structure of the system. That topology is associated with an inherently protected exchange symmetry between the modes, enabling the realization of spontaneous symmetry breaking in ideal, bias-free, conditions without any fine tuning of parameters. The dynamic manifests itself by a periodic alternation of the modes from one resonator roundtrip to the next reminiscent of period-doubling. This extends to a range of localized structures in the form of domain walls, bright solitons, and breathers, which have all been observed with remarkable long term stability. A rigorous testing of the randomness of the symmetry-broken state selection statistics has also confirmed the robustness of the exchange symmetry in our experiment. Our results and conclusions are supported by an effective Hamiltonian model explaining the symmetry protection in our system. The model also shows that our work has relevance to other systems of interacting bosons and to the Floquet engineering of quantum matter. The application of a mechanical strain to a 2D material can create pseudo-magnetic fields and lead to a quantized valley Hall effect. However, measuring valley-resolved effects remains a challenging task due to their inherent fragility and dependence on the sample's proper design. Additionally, non-local transport probes based on multiterminal devices have often proven to be inadequate in yielding conclusive evidence of the valley Hall signal. Here, we introduce an alternative way of detecting the quantized valley Hall effect, which entirely relies on local density measurements, performed deep in the bulk of the sample. The resulting quantized signal is a genuine Fermi sea response, independent of the edge physics, and reflects the underlying valley Hall effect through the Widom-St\v{r}eda formula. Specifically, our approach is based on measuring the variation of the particle density, locally in the bulk, upon varying the strength of the applied strain. This approach to the quantized valley Hall effect is particularly well suited for experiments based on synthetic lattices, where the particle density (or integrated density of states) can be spatially resolved., Comment: 17 pages, 12 figures

We propose a scheme to implement Kitaev's honeycomb model with cold atoms, based on a periodic (Floquet) drive, in view of realizing and probing non-Abelian chiral spin liquids using quantum simulators. We derive the effective Hamiltonian to leading order in the inverse-frequency expansion, and show that the drive opens up a topological gap in the spectrum without mixing the effective Majorana and vortex degrees of freedom. We address the challenge of probing the physics of Majorana fermions, while having only access to the original composite spin degrees of freedom. Specifically, we propose to detect the properties of the chiral spin liquid phase using gap spectroscopy and edge quenches in the presence of the Floquet drive. The resulting chiral edge signal, which relates to the thermal Hall effect associated with neutral Majorana currents, is found to be robust for realistically-prepared states. By combining strong interactions with Floquet engineering, our work paves the way for future studies of non-Abelian excitations and quantized thermal transport using quantum simulators.

Strongly interacting topological matter exhibits fundamentally new phenomena with potential applications in quantum information technology. Emblematic instances are fractional quantum Hall states, where the interplay of magnetic fields and strong interactions gives rise to fractionally charged quasi-particles, long-ranged entanglement, and anyonic exchange statistics. Progress in engineering synthetic magnetic fields has raised the hope to create these exotic states in controlled quantum systems. However, except for a recent Laughlin state of light, preparing fractional quantum Hall states in engineered systems remains elusive. Here, we realize a fractional quantum Hall (FQH) state with ultracold atoms in an optical lattice. The state is a lattice version of a bosonic $\nu=1/2$ Laughlin state with two particles on sixteen sites. This minimal system already captures many hallmark features of Laughlin-type FQH states: we observe a suppression of two-body interactions, we find a distinctive vortex structure in the density correlations, and we measure a fractional Hall conductivity of $\sigma_\text{H}/\sigma_0= 0.6(2)$ via the bulk response to a magnetic perturbation. Furthermore, by tuning the magnetic field we map out the transition point between the normal and the FQH regime through a spectroscopic probe of the many-body gap. Our work provides a starting point for exploring highly entangled topological matter with ultracold atoms.

Quantum metrology is deeply connected to quantum geometry, through the fundamental notion of quantum Fisher information. Inspired by advances in topological matter, it was recently suggested that the Berry curvature and Chern numbers of band structures can dictate strict lower bounds on metrological properties, hence establishing a strong connection between topology and quantum metrology. In this work, we provide a first experimental verification of such topological bounds, by performing optimal quantum multi-parameter estimation and achieving the best possible measurement precision. By emulating the band structure of a Chern insulator, we experimentally determine the metrological potential across a topological phase transition, and demonstrate strong enhancement in the topologically non-trivial regime. Subjecting a physical system to a time-periodic drive can substantially modify its properties and applications. This Floquet-engineering approach has been extensively applied to a wide range of classical and quantum settings in view of designing synthetic systems with exotic properties. Considering a general class of two-mode nonlinear optical devices, we show that effective optical nonlinearities can be created by subjecting the light field to a repeated pulse sequence, which couples the two modes in a fast and time-periodic manner. The strength of these drive-induced optical nonlinearities, which include an emerging four-wave mixing, can be varied by simply adjusting the pulse sequence. This leads to topological changes in the system's phase space, which can be detected through light intensity and phase measurements. Our proposal builds on an effective-Hamiltonian approach, which derives from a parent quantum many-body Hamiltonian describing driven interacting bosons. As a corollary, our results equally apply to Bose-Einstein condensates in driven double-well potentials, where pair tunneling effectively arises from the periodic pulse sequence. The engineering of synthetic dimensions allows for the construction of fictitious lattice structures by coupling the discrete degrees of freedom of a physical system, such as the quantized modes of an electromagnetic cavity or the internal states of an atom. This method enables the study of static and dynamical Bloch band properties in the absence of a real periodic lattice structure. So far, the vast majority of implementations have focused on linear and conservative processes, with the potentially rich physics and opportunities offered by nonlinearities and dissipation remaining largely unexplored. Here, we theoretically and experimentally investigate the complex interplay between Bloch band transport, nonlinearity, and dissipation, exploring how a synthetic dimension realised in the frequency space of a coherently-driven optical resonator influences the dynamics of nonlinear waves of the system. In particular, we observe and study nonlinear dissipative Bloch oscillations occurring along the synthetic frequency dimension, sustained by localized dissipative structures (solitons) that persist endlessly in the resonator. The unique properties of the dissipative soliton states can extend the effective size of the synthetic dimension far beyond that achieved in the linear regime, as well as enable long-lived Bloch oscillations and high-resolution probing of the underlying band structure. Besides representing the first experimental study of the interplay between Bloch oscillations and dissipative solitons, our work establishes Kerr resonators as an ideal platform for the study of nonlinear dynamics in long-scale synthetic dimensions, with promising applications in topological photonics.

Synthetic dimensions provide a powerful approach for simulating condensed matter physics in cold atoms and photonics, whereby a set of discrete degrees of freedom are coupled together and re-interpreted as lattice sites along an artificial spatial dimension. However, atomic experimental realisations have been limited so far by the number of artificial lattice sites that can be feasibly coupled along the synthetic dimension. Here, we experimentally realise for the first time a very long and controllable synthetic dimension of atomic harmonic trap states. To create this, we couple trap states by dynamically modulating the trapping potential of the atomic cloud with patterned light. By controlling the detuning between the frequency of the driving potential and the trapping frequency, we implement a controllable force in the synthetic dimension. This induces Bloch oscillations in which atoms move periodically up and down tens of atomic trap states. We experimentally observe the key characteristics of this behaviour in the real space dynamics of the cloud, and verify our observations with numerical simulations and semiclassical theory. This experiment provides an intuitive approach for the manipulation and control of highly-excited trap states, and sets the stage for the future exploration of topological physics in higher dimensions.

Ultracold atoms loaded into higher Bloch bands provide an elegant setting for realizing many-body quantum states that spontaneously break time-reversal symmetry through the formation of chiral orbital order. The applicability of this strategy remains nonetheless limited due to the finite lifetime of atoms in high-energy bands. Here we introduce an alternative framework, suitable for bosonic gases, which builds on assembling square plaquettes pierced by a $\pi$-flux (half a magnetic-flux quantum). This setting is shown to be formally equivalent to an interacting bosonic gas loaded into $p$ orbitals, and we explore the consequences of the resulting chiral orbital order, both for weak and strong onsite interactions. We demonstrate the emergence of a chiral superfluid vortex lattice, exhibiting a long-lived gapped collective mode that is characterized by local chiral currents. This chiral superfluid phase is shown to undergo a phase transition to a chiral Mott insulator for sufficiently strong interactions. Recent progress in synthetic lattice systems has opened the door to novel explorations of topological matter. In particular, photonic devices and ultracold matter waves offer the unique possibility of studying the rich interplay between topological band structures and tunable nonlinearities. In this emerging field of nonlinear topological physics, a recent experiment revealed the quantized motion of localized nonlinear excitations (solitons) upon driving a Thouless pump sequence; the reported observations suggest that the quantized displacement of solitons is dictated by the Chern number of the band from which they emanate. In this work, we elucidate the origin of this intriguing nonlinear topological effect, by showing that the motion of solitons is established by the quantized displacement of Wannier functions. Our general theoretical approach, which fully clarifies the central role of the Chern number in solitonic pumps, provides a rigorous framework for describing the topological transport of nonlinear excitations in a broad class of physical systems. Quantum geometry has emerged as a central and ubiquitous concept in quantum sciences, with direct consequences on quantum metrology and many-body quantum physics. In this context, two fundamental geometric quantities are known to play complementary roles: the Fubini-Study metric, which introduces a notion of distance between quantum states defined over a parameter space, and the Berry curvature associated with Berry-phase effects and topological band structures. In fact, recent studies have revealed direct relations between these two important quantities, suggesting that topological properties can, in special cases, be deduced from the quantum metric. In this work, we establish general and exact relations between the quantum metric and the topological invariants of generic Dirac Hamiltonians. In particular, we demonstrate that topological indices (Chern numbers or winding numbers) are bounded by the quantum volume determined by the quantum metric. Our theoretical framework, which builds on the Clifford algebra of Dirac matrices, is applicable to topological insulators and semimetals of arbitrary spatial dimensions, with or without chiral symmetry. Applying time-periodic modulations is routinely used to control and design synthetic matter in quantum-engineered settings. In lattice systems, this approach is explored to engineer band structures with non-trivial topological properties, but also to generate exotic interaction processes. A prime example is density-assisted tunneling, by which the hopping amplitude of a particle between neighboring sites explicitly depends on their respective occupations. Here, we show how density-assisted tunneling can be tailored in view of simulating the effects of strain in synthetic graphene-type systems. Specifically, we consider a mixture of two atomic species on a honeycomb optical lattice: one species forms a Bose-Einstein condensate in an anisotropic harmonic trap, whose inhomogeneous density profile induces an effective uniaxial strain for the second species through density-assisted tunneling processes. In direct analogy with strained graphene, the second species experiences a pseudo magnetic field, hence exhibiting relativistic Landau levels and the valley Hall effect. The quantum Fisher information (QFI) represents a fundamental concept in quantum physics. On the one hand, it quantifies the metrological potential of quantum states in quantum-parameter-estimation measurements. On the other hand, it is intrinsically related to the quantum geometry and multipartite entanglement of many-body systems. Here, we explore how the QFI can be estimated via randomized measurements, an approach which has the advantage of being applicable to both pure and mixed quantum states. In the latter case, our method gives access to the sub-quantum Fisher information, which sets a lower bound on the QFI. We experimentally validate this approach using two platforms: a nitrogen-vacancy center spin in diamond and a 4-qubit state provided by a superconducting quantum computer. We further perform a numerical study on a many-body spin system to illustrate the advantage of our randomized-measurement approach in estimating multipartite entanglement, as compared to quantum state tomography. Magnetic monopoles play a central role in various areas of fundamental physics, ranging from electromagnetism to topological states of matter. While their observation is elusive in high-energy physics, monopole sources of artificial gauge fields have been recently identified in synthetic matter. String theory, a potentially unifying framework that encompasses quantum mechanics, promotes the conventional \emph{vector} gauge fields of electrodynamics to \emph{tensor} gauge fields, and predicts the existence of more exotic \emph{tensor monopoles} in 4D space. Here we report on the characterization of a tensor monopole synthesized in a 4D parameter space by the spin degrees of freedom of a single solid-state defect in diamond. Using two complementary methods, we characterize the tensor monopole by measuring its quantized topological charge and its emanating Kalb-Ramond field. By introducing a fictitious external field that breaks chiral symmetry, we further observe an intriguing transition in the spectrum, characterized by spectral rings protected by mirror symmetries. Bloch oscillations (BOs) are a fundamental phenomenon by which a wave packet undergoes a periodic motion in a lattice when subjected to an external force. Observed in a wide range of synthetic lattice systems, BOs are intrinsically related to the geometric and topological properties of the underlying band structure. This has established BOs as a prominent tool for the detection of Berry phase effects, including those described by non-Abelian gauge fields. In this work, we unveil a unique topological effect that manifests in the BOs of higher-order topological insulators through the interplay of non-Abelian Berry curvature and quantized Wilson loops. It is characterized by an oscillating Hall drift that is synchronized with a topologically-protected inter-band beating and a multiplied Bloch period. We elucidate that the origin of this synchronization mechanism relies on the periodic quantum dynamics of Wannier centers. Quantum anomalies offer a useful guide for the exploration of transport phenomena in topological semimetals. In this work, we introduce a model describing a semimetal in four spatial dimensions, whose nodal points act like tensor monopoles in momentum space. This system is shown to exhibit monopole-to-monopole phase transitions, as signaled by a change in the value of the topological Dixmier-Douady invariant as well as by the associated surface states on its boundary. We use this model to reveal an intriguing "4D parity magnetic effect", which stems from a parity-type anomaly. In this effect, topological currents are induced upon time-modulating the separation between the fictitious monopoles in the presence of a magnetic perturbation. Besides its theoretical implications in both condensed matter and quantum field theory, the peculiar 4D magnetic effect revealed by our model could be measured by simulating higher-dimensional semimetals in synthetic matter.

The quantum Cram\'er-Rao bound sets a fundamental limit on the accuracy of unbiased parameter estimation in quantum systems, relating the uncertainty in determining a parameter to the inverse of the quantum Fisher information. We experimentally demonstrate near saturation of the quantum Cram\'er-Rao bound in the phase estimation of a solid-state spin system, provided by a nitrogen-vacancy center in diamond. This is achieved by comparing the experimental uncertainty in phase estimation with an independent measurement of the related quantum Fisher information. The latter is independently extracted from coherent dynamical responses of the system under weak parametric modulations, without performing any quantum-state tomography. While optimal parameter estimation has already been observed for quantum devices involving a limited number of degrees of freedom, our method offers a versatile and powerful experimental tool to explore the Cram\'er-Rao bound and the quantum Fisher information in systems of higher complexity, as relevant for quantum technologies.

Coherent control via periodic modulation, also known as Floquet engineering, has emerged as a powerful experimental method for the realization of novel quantum systems with exotic properties. In particular, it has been employed to study topological phenomena in a variety of different platforms. In driven systems, the topological properties of the quasienergy bands can often be determined by standard topological invariants, such as Chern numbers, which are commonly used in static systems. However, due to the periodic nature of the quasienergy spectrum, this topological description is incomplete and new invariants are required to fully capture the topological properties of these driven settings. Most prominently, there exist two-dimensional anomalous Floquet systems that exhibit robust chiral edge modes, despite all Chern numbers are equal to zero. Here, we realize such a system with bosonic atoms in a periodically-driven honeycomb lattice and infer the complete set of topological invariants from energy gap measurements and local Hall deflections.

We introduce a scheme by which flat bands with higher Chern number $\vert C\vert>1$ can be designed in ultracold gases through a coherent manipulation of Bloch bands. Inspired by quantum-optics methods, our approach consists in creating a "dark Bloch band" by coupling a set of source bands through resonant processes. Considering a $\Lambda$ system of three bands, the Chern number of the dark band is found to follow a simple sum rule in terms of the Chern numbers of the source bands: $C_D\!=\!C_1+C_2-C_3$. Altogether, our dark-state scheme realizes a nearly flat Bloch band with predictable and tunable Chern number $C_D$. We illustrate our method based on a $\Lambda$ system, formed of the bands of the Harper-Hofstadter model, which leads to a nearly flat Chern band with $C_D\!=\!2$. We explore a realistic sequence to load atoms into the dark Chern band, as well as a probing scheme based on Hall drift measurements. Semimetals exhibiting nodal lines or nodal surfaces represent a novel class of topological states of matter. While conventional Weyl semimetals exhibit momentum-space Dirac monopoles, these more exotic semimetals can feature unusual topological defects that are analogous to extended monopoles. In this work, we describe a scheme by which nodal rings and nodal spheres can be realized in synthetic quantum matter through well-defined periodic-driving protocols. As a central result of our work, we characterize these nodal defects through the quantum metric, which is a gauge-invariant quantity associated with the geometry of quantum states. In the case of nodal rings, where the Berry curvature and conventional topological responses are absent, we show that the quantum metric provides an observable signature for these extended topological defects. Besides, we demonstrate that quantum-metric measurements could be exploited to directly detect the topological charge associated with a nodal sphere. We discuss possible experimental implementations of Floquet nodal defects in few-level atomic systems, paving the way for the exploration of Floquet extended monopoles in quantum matter., Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures

Bound states of two interacting particles moving on a lattice can exhibit remarkable features that are not captured by the underlying single-particle picture. Inspired by this phenomenon, we introduce a novel framework by which genuine interaction-induced geometric and topological effects can be realized in quantum-engineered systems. Our approach builds on the design of effective lattices for the center-of-mass motion of two-body bound states (\emph{doublons}), which can be created through long-range interactions. This general scenario is illustrated on several examples, where flat-band localization, topological pumps and higher-order topological corner modes emerge from genuine interaction effects. The spatial localization of quantum states plays a central role in condensed-matter phenomena, ranging from many-body localization to topological matter. Building on the dissipation-fluctuation theorem, we propose that the localization properties of a quantum-engineered system can be probed by spectroscopy, namely, by measuring its excitation rate upon a periodic drive. We apply this method to various examples that are of direct experimental relevance in ultracold atomic gases, including Anderson localization, topological edge modes, and interacting particles in a harmonic trap. Moreover, inspired by a relation between quantum fluctuations and the quantum metric, we describe how our scheme can be generalized in view of extracting the full quantum-geometric tensor of many-body systems. Quantum simulation has the potential to investigate gauge theories in strongly-interacting regimes, which are up to now inaccessible through conventional numerical techniques. Here, we take a first step in this direction by implementing a Floquet-based method for studying $\mathbb{Z}_2$ lattice gauge theories using two-component ultracold atoms in a double-well potential. For resonant periodic driving at the on-site interaction strength and an appropriate choice of the modulation parameters, the effective Floquet Hamiltonian exhibits $\mathbb{Z}_2$ symmetry. We study the dynamics of the system for different initial states and critically contrast the observed evolution with a theoretical analysis of the full time-dependent Hamiltonian of the periodically-driven lattice model. We reveal challenges that arise due to symmetry-breaking terms and outline potential pathways to overcome these limitations. Our results provide important insights for future studies of lattice gauge theories based on Floquet techniques.
