1. Hidden by a star: the redshift and the offset broad line of the Flat Spectrum Radio Quasar PKS 0903-57

Abstract: Context: PKS 0903-57 is a little-studied gamma-ray blazar which has recently attracted considerable interest due to the strong flaring episodes observed since 2020 in HE (100 MeV < E < 100 GeV) and VHE (100 GeV < E < 10 TeV) gamma-rays. Its nature and properties are still not well determined. In particular, it is unclear whether PKS 0903-57 is a BL Lac or a Flat Spectrum Radio Quasar (FSRQ), while its redshift estimation relies on a possibly misassociated low signal-to-noise spectrum. Aim: We aim to reliably measure the redshift of the blazar and to determine its spectral type and luminosity in the optical range. Methods: We performed spectroscopy of the optical counterpart of the blazar using the South African Large Telescope (SALT) and the Very Large Telescope (VLT) and monitored it photometrically with the Rapid Eye Mount (REM) telescope. Results: We firmly measured the redshift of the blazar as z= 0.2621 +/- 0.0006 thanks to the detection of five narrow optical lines. The detection of a symmetric broad Halpha line with Full Width at Half Maximum (FWHM) of 4020 +/- 30 km/s together with a jet-dominated continuum leads us to classify it as a FSRQ. Finally, we detected with high significance a redshift offset (about 1500 km/s) between the broad line and the host. 2. Spin-orbit control of Dirac points and end states in inverted gap nanowires

Abstract: We predict that in InAs/GaSb nanowires with an inverted band alignment a transverse electric field induces a collapse of the hybridization gap, and a semimetal phase occurs. We use a self-consistent k.p approach and an adapted Bernevig-Hughes-Zhang model to show that massless Dirac points result from exact cancellation between the kinetic electron-hole coupling and the field-controlled spin-orbit coupling. End states - mid-gap states localized at the extremes of a finite nanowire - are supported up to a critical field, but suddenly fade away as the system is driven through the semimetal phase, eventually evolving to trivial surface states, which expose a spin-orbit induced topological transition to the normal phase., Comment: 18 pages, includes Supplementary Information

Abstract: Direct redshift determination of BL Lac objects is highly challenging as the emission in the optical and near-infrared (NIR) bands is largely dominated by the non-thermal emission from the relativistic jet that points very close to our line of sight. Therefore, their optical spectra often show no emission lines from the host galaxy. In this work, we aim to overcome this difficulty by attempting to detect the host galaxy and derive redshift constraints based on assumptions on the galaxy magnitude ("imaging redshifts"). Imaging redshifts are derived by obtaining deep optical images under good seeing conditions, so that it is possible to detect the host galaxy as weak extension of the point-like source. We then derive the imaging redshift by using the host galaxy as a standard candle using two different methods. We determine imaging redshift for 9 out of 17 blazars that we observed as part of this program. The redshift range of these targets is 0.28-0.60 and the two methods used to derive the redshift give very consistent results within the uncertainties. We also performed a detailed comparison of the imaging redshifts with those obtained by other methods, like direct spectroscopic constraints or looking for groups of galaxies close to the blazar. We show that the constraints from different methods are consistent and that for example in the case of J2156.0+1818, which is the most distant source for which we detect the host galaxy, combining the three constraints narrows down the redshift to $0.63

4. Ultrasmall CsPbBr3 Blue Emissive Perovskite Quantum Dots using K-alloyed Cs4PbBr6 Nanocrystals as Precursors

Abstract: We report a colloidal synthesis of blue emissive, stable cube-shaped CsPbBr3 quantum dots (QDs) in the strong quantum confinement regime via a dissolution-recrystallization starting from pre-synthesized (KxCs1-x)4PbBr6 nanocrystals which are then reacted with PbBr2. This is markedly different from the known case of Cs4PbBr6 nanocrystals that react within seconds with PbBr2 and get transformed into much larger, green emitting CsPbBr3 nanocrystals. Here, instead, the conversion of (KxCs1-x)4PbBr6 nanocrystals to CsPbBr3 QDs occurs in a time span of hours, and tuning of the QDs size is achieved by adjusting the concentration of precursors. The QDs exhibit excitonic features in optical absorption that are tunable in the 420 - 452 nm range, accompanied by blue photoluminescence with quantum yield around 60%. Detailed spectroscopic investigations in both the single and multi-exciton regime reveal the exciton fine structure and the effect of Auger recombination of these CsPbBr3 QDs, confirming theoretical predictions for this system.

6. InP/GaSb core-shell nanowires: a novel hole-based platform with strong spin-orbit coupling for full-shell hybrid devices

Abstract: Full-shell hybrid nanowires (NWs), structures comprising a superconductor shell that encapsulates a semiconductor (SM) core, have attracted considerable attention in the search for Majorana zero modes (MZMs). However, the predicted Rashba spin-orbit coupling (SOC) in the SM is too small to achieve substantial topological minigaps. In addition, the SM wavefunction spreads all across the section of the nanowire, leading typically to a finite background of trivial subgap states with which MZMs may coexist. To overcome both problems, we explore the advantages of utilizing core-shell hole-band NWs as the SM part of a full-shell hybrid, with an insulating core and an active SM shell. In particular, we consider InP/GaSb core-shell NWs, which allow to exploit the unique characteristics of the III-V compound SM valence bands. We demonstrate that they exhibit a robust hole SOC that emerges from the combination of the intrinsic spin-orbit interaction of the SM active shell and the confinement effects of the nanostructure, thus depending mainly on SM and geometrical parameters. In other words, the SOC is intrinsic and does not rely on red electric fields, which are non-tunable in a full-shell hybrid geometry. Abstract: Monochromatic gamma-ray signals constitute a potential smoking gun signature for annihilating or decaying dark matter particles that could relatively easily be distinguished from astrophysical or instrumental backgrounds. We provide an updated assessment of the sensitivity of the Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) to such signals, based on observations of the Galactic centre region as well as of selected dwarf spheroidal galaxies. We find that current limits and detection prospects for dark matter masses above 300 GeV will be significantly improved, by up to an order of magnitude in the multi-TeV range. This demonstrates that CTA will set a new standard for gamma-ray astronomy also in this respect, as the world's largest and most sensitive high-energy gamma-ray observatory, in particular due to its exquisite energy resolution at TeV energies and the adopted observational strategy focussing on regions with large dark matter densities. Throughout our analysis, we use up-to-date instrument response functions, and we thoroughly model the effect of instrumental systematic uncertainties in our statistical treatment. Abstract: Abstract We present an efficient strategy for on-surface engineering of organic metal-free supramolecular complexes with long-term spin protection. By vacuum deposition of azafullerene (C59N•) monomers on a pre-deposited template layer of [10]cycloparaphenylene ([10]CPP) nanohoops on Au(111) surface we exploit the molecular shape matching between the C59N• and [10]CPP for the azafullerene encapsulation with nanohoops in a guest-host complexation geometry. C59N•⊂[10]CPP supramolecular complexes self-assemble into an extended two-dimensional hexagonal lattice yielding a high density network of stable spin-1/2 radicals. We find compelling evidence for electronic coupling between the guest C59N• and the host [10]CPP in supramolecular species. At the same time, [10]CPP effectively protects the radical state of encapsulated azafullerenes against dimerization and inhibits C59N• coupling to the Au substrate. Azafullerene encapsulation by nanohoops represents a viable realization of molecular spin protection while simultaneously demonstrating exceptional self-assembling properties by which large-scale 2D architectures of molecular spins can be realized.

It is well-established that computer-based learning environments (CBLEs) that can detect and adapt to students' affective states can enhance learning outcomes. However, practical constraints often pose challenges to the deployment of sensor-based affect detection in CBLEs, particularly for large-scale or long-term applications. As a result, sensor-free affect detection, which exclusively relies on logs of students' interactions with CBLEs, emerges as a compelling alternative. This paper provides a comprehensive literature review on sensor-free affect detection. It delves into the most frequently identified affective states, the methodologies and techniques employed for sensor development, the defining attributes of CBLEs and data samples, as well as key research trends. Despite the field's evident maturity, demonstrated by the consistent performance of the models and the application of advanced machine learning techniques, there is ample scope for future research. Potential areas for further exploration include enhancing the performance of sensor-free detection models, amassing more samples of underrepresented emotions, and identifying additional emotions. There is also a need to refine model development practices and methods. This could involve comparing the accuracy of various data collection techniques, determining the optimal granularity of duration, establishing a shared database of action logs and emotion labels, and making the source code of these models publicly accessible. Future research should also prioritize the integration of models into CBLEs for real-time detection, the provision of meaningful interventions based on detected emotions, and a deeper understanding of the impact of emotions on learning.

Abstract: The detection of gravitational waves from a binary neutron star merger by Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo (GW170817), along with the discovery of the electromagnetic counterparts of this gravitational wave event, ushered in a new era of multimessenger astronomy, providing the first direct evidence that BNS mergers are progenitors of short gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). Such events may also produce very-high-energy (VHE, > 100GeV) photons which have yet to be detected in coincidence with a gravitational wave signal. The Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) is a next-generation VHE observatory which aims to be indispensable in this search, with an unparalleled sensitivity and ability to slew anywhere on the sky within a few tens of seconds. New observing modes and follow-up strategies are being developed for CTA to rapidly cover localization areas of gravitational wave events that are typically larger than the CTA field of view. This work will evaluate and provide estimations on the expected number of of gravitational wave events that will be observable with CTA, considering both on- and off-axis emission. Abstract: Galaxy clusters are expected to be dark matter (DM) reservoirs and storage rooms for the cosmic-ray protons (CRp) that accumulate along the cluster's formation history. Accordingly, they are excellent targets to search for signals of DM annihilation and decay at gamma-ray energies and are predicted to be sources of large-scale gamma-ray emission due to hadronic interactions in the intracluster medium. We estimate the sensitivity of the Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) to detect diffuse gamma-ray emission from the Perseus galaxy cluster. We perform a detailed spatial and spectral modelling of the expected signal for the DM and the CRp components. For each, we compute the expected CTA sensitivity. The observing strategy of Perseus is also discussed. In the absence of a diffuse signal (non-detection), CTA should constrain the CRp to thermal energy ratio within the radius $R_{500}$ down to about $X_{500}<3\times 10^{-3}$, for a spatial CRp distribution that follows the thermal gas and a CRp spectral index $\alpha_{\rm CRp}=2.3$. Under the optimistic assumption of a pure hadronic origin of the Perseus radio mini-halo and depending on the assumed magnetic field profile, CTA should measure $\alpha_{\rm CRp}$ down to about $\Delta\alpha_{\rm CRp}\simeq 0.1$ and the CRp spatial distribution with 10% precision. Regarding DM, CTA should improve the current ground-based gamma-ray DM limits from clusters observations on the velocity-averaged annihilation cross-section by a factor of up to $\sim 5$, depending on the modelling of DM halo substructure. In the case of decay of DM particles, CTA will explore a new region of the parameter space, reaching models with $\tau_{\chi}>10^{27}$s for DM masses above 1 TeV. These constraints will provide unprecedented sensitivity to the physics of both CRp acceleration and transport at cluster scale and to TeV DM particle models, especially in the decay scenario., Comment: 93 pages (including author list, appendix and references), 143 figures. 14. Enrico Fermi: a forgotten article written for Italian teachers

Abstract: In 1929, Enrico Fermi wrote "Problemi attuali della fisica" ("Contemporary Problems of Physics"), a short article in Italian published in the magazine "Annali dell'istruzione media". The magazine was sponsored by the Italian Ministry of Schooling and Education, and it was addressed to teachers and principals of middle and high schools. This short text written by Fermi had been forgotten for a long time. However, in recent years it has been republished in Italy; moreover, the "Annali dell'istruzione media" have been digitized and made freely available online. It is unclear why Fermi wrote an article of a clearly divulgative nature for a non-technical journal, but is still interesting to to read his words and appreciate his skills as a great scientific communicator. In this work we include the transcription of the original article in Italian, and we also propose an English translation to make the text available world-wide and accessible to a broader public.

15. Enhancement and anisotropy of electron Lande factor due to spin-orbit interaction in semiconductor nanowires

Abstract: We investigate the effective Lande factor in semiconductor nanowires with strong Rashba spin-orbit coupling. Using the $\mathbf{k}\cdot\mathbf{p}$ theory and the envelope function approach we derive a conduction band Hamiltonian where the tensor $g^*$ is explicitly related to the spin-orbit coupling constant $\alpha_R$. Our model includes orbital effects from the Rashba spin-orbit term, leading to a significant enhancement of the effective Lande factor which is naturally anisotropic. For nanowires based on the low-gap, high spin-orbit coupled material InSb, we investigate the anisotropy of the effective Lande factor with respect to the magnetic field direction, exposing a twofold symmetry for the bottom gate architecture. The anisotropy results from the competition between the localization of the envelope function and the spin polarization of the electronic state, both determined by the magnetic field direction., Comment: 14 pages, 15 figures

16. Minority, Low-Income Students: Study Abroad and Global Studies Experiences

Abstract: International education has focused on the learning processes of minority, low-income college students and learners of color. This study analyzes the experiences of nine minority, first-generation U.S. undergraduates from a four-year college in the southeastern U.S. who pursued study abroad and Global Studies during 2015-2022. Global Studies is an enrichment opportunity offered to students to build their linguistic and intercultural competence. Closed-ended questionnaires, semi-structured interviews, and course materials were collected. Canagarajah's (2013) notion of transcultural practice, in conjunction with Kramsch's (2009) concept of symbolic competence and Norton's (1995) theory of investment were used to explore these students' experiences while interacting with the target language and culture. The findings reveal how the student participants' linguistic and sociocultural identities developed as they negotiated their different positionings. Students demonstrated a newfound meaning and symbolic value in the language and culture that they engaged with. Students' reflections on issues of inclusiveness and social justice are discussed.

Abstract: Self-assembled optically active quantum dot molecules (QDMs) allow the creation of protected qubits via singlet-triplet spin states. The qubit energy splitting of these states is defined by the tunnel coupling strength and is, therefore, determined by the potential landscape and thus fixed during growth. Applying an in-plane magnetic field increases the confinement of the hybridized wave functions within the quantum dots, leading to a decrease of the tunnel coupling strength. We achieve a tuning of the coupling strength by $(53.4\pm1.7)$ %. 18. Redshift determination of blazars for the Cherenkov Telescope Array

Abstract: Blazars are the most numerous type of observed high-energy gamma-ray emitters. However, their emission mechanisms and population properties are still not well-understood. Crucial to this understanding are their cosmological redshifts, which are often not easy to obtain. This presents a great challenge to the next-generation ground-based observatory for very-high-energy gamma rays, the Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA), which aims to detect a large number of distant blazars to study their intrinsic emission properties and to place tight constraints on the extragalactic background light density, amongst others. The successful investigation of these subjects needs a precise redshift determination. Motivated by these challenges, the CTA redshift task force initiated more than 3 years ago a spectroscopic observing program using some of the largest optical and infrared telescopes to measure the redshifts of a large fraction of blazars that are likely to be detected with CTA. In this proceedings, we give an overview of the CTA redshift task force, discuss some of the difficulties associated with measuring the redshifts of blazars and present our sample selection and observing strategies. 20. Photocatalytic action of Ag/TiO2 nanoparticles to emerging pollutants degradation: A comprehensive review

Abstract: Silver (Ag) doped titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanoparticles are promising photocatalysts for the degradation of emerging pollutants. These nanocomposites enhance the photocatalytic activity of TiO2 in visible light, suppress the e-/h+ rearrangement, and enhance their bactericidal properties. This review proposes a bibliometric analysis that elucidates research trends, and important topics on contaminant degradation, analyzes the advantages and limitations of different synthesis techniques (solvothermal, photochemical reduction, sol-gel, and others), their properties to produce Ag/TiO2, and their potential for pollutant degradation. Thus, depending on the technique chosen, Ag doping of TiO2 can offer high stability, recyclability for more than 3 cycles, customized morphologies and sizes, among others. Applications of Ag/TiO2 include wastewater treatment, antibacterial surfaces, food packaging, implants, and others. Advances in the synthesis of Ag/TiO2 photocatalysts offer excellent photocatalytic degradation, between 80 % and 100 %, for organic dyes, hormones, pharmaceuticals, pesticides and other emerging pollutants. Ag/TiO2 photocatalysts show superior degradation rates compared to pure TiO2, with some achieving up to 99 % pollutant removal. The bibliometric analysis performed by Methodi Ordinatio, classifying 267 articles, reveals a foundation of relevant articles, around 35 % of articles published on these topics were published between 2019 and 2021. A complete cost analysis of Ag/TiO2 is considered to determine the feasibility for pilot and large-scale experimentation. These nanocomposites offer a promising solution to address the growing concern about emerging pollutants, disinfection of water, and in the inactivation of pathogenic microorganisms.

21. Enrico Fermi: a little-known conference dating back to the early years of solid-state physics

Abstract: In April 1925, Enrico Fermi was only 23 years old and he had graduated less than three years earlier. Despite his age, Fermi was invited at the University of Rome by Federigo Enriques to give several lectures on the recent advances in physics at the Italian Mathematics Seminar. Enriques was also the editor of "Periodico di Matematiche", an important Italian journal concerned primarily with secondary school math teachers. Some of the articles published by "Periodico di Matematiche" correspond to the lectures which Fermi gave during seminars and meetings of Italian mathematicians. Here we propose an English translation for one of these articles, entitled "Sopra la teoria cinetica dei corpi solidi" and discussing the kinetic theory of solids. We believe that this Fermi's work offers a twofold interesting perspective: on one side, it allows us to explore the problems related to the structure of matter of emerging at the time as seen by the eyes of a bright, young physicist. On the other hand, it shows us the undoubtedly high scientific level of the articles read in Italy by the secondary school math teachers in the Twenties.

Abstract: Active galactic nuclei (AGNs) make up about 35 per cent of the more than 250 sources detected in very-high-energy (VHE) gamma rays to date with Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescopes. Apart from four nearby radio galaxies and two AGNs of unknown type, all known VHE AGNs are blazars. Knowledge of the cosmological redshift of gamma-ray blazars is key to enabling the study of their intrinsic emission properties, as the interaction between gamma rays and the extragalactic background light (EBL) results in a spectral softening. Therefore, the redshift determination exercise is crucial to indirectly placing tight constraints on the EBL density and to studying blazar population evolution across cosmic time. Due to the powerful relativistic jets in blazars, most of their host galaxies' spectral features are outshined, and dedicated high signal-to-noise spectroscopic observations are required. Deep medium- to high-resolution spectroscopy of 33 gamma-ray blazar optical counterparts was performed with the European Southern Observatory New Technology Telescope, Keck II telescope, Shane 3-meter telescope and the Southern African Large Telescope. From the sample, spectra from 25 objects display spectral features or are featureless and have high signal-to-noise. The other eight objects have low quality featureless spectra. We systematically searched for absorption and emission features and estimated, when possible, the fractional host galaxy flux in the measured total flux. Abstract: Objective: UPD(16)mat is a rare genetic condition characterized by intrauterine growth deficiency and multiple congenital malformations. To the best of our knowledge, neurodevelopmental disorders have never been described in association with UPD(16)mat, nor a comprehensive neuropsychological profile of a UPD(16)mat child has never been delineated. We present a young patient diagnosed with UPD(16)mat, and provide clinical description, comprehensive neurodevelopmental, neuropsychological and neurological assessment. Method: Neuropsychological examination included global neurodevelopment and intelligence scales, as well as specific trials for gross-motor, fine-motor and perceptual motor abilities, and language skills. Results: The patient shows multiple congenital anomalies, including oesophageal atresia, mild bone alterations, hypospadias, persistent left superior vena cava. The neurodevelopmental evaluation demonstrates a speech disorder, signs of gross and fine motor skills difficulties, balance and visuo-motor deficit. Conclusion: Evidence from this study indicates that UPD(16)mat may present neuropsychological and/or minor neurological abnormalities. Monitoring both the early and late neurodevelopmental outcomes during childhood is recommended for the chance of an early intervention.

27. The legal nature of market neutrality in the euro area’s monetary policy

Abstract: European Central Bank (ECB) staff have repeatedly justified the carbon bias of the Asset Purchase Programme (APP) in terms of “market neutrality”. Yet this term is not included in the Treaties so its meaning and legal nature are unclear. To clarify the meaning of market neutrality in the euro area’s monetary policy we develop a summative content analysis of the textual data contained in relevant legal and policy documents that are publicly available. We conclude that, in the context of monetary policy, the ECB and its staff have used the term market neutrality with two meanings: (i) the minimisation of any impact on the operation of markets and, in particular, on the operation of the price discovery mechanism; and (ii) the mirroring of the composition of a particular market to guide asset purchases. We then examine the legal nature of market neutrality in each of these two meanings. In its first meaning, we argue that market neutrality is the ECB’s definition of the so-called ‘principle of an open market economy’ (‘OME principle’) and it is therefore primary law. In its second meaning, we argue that market neutrality operationalises the OME principle and is therefore secondary law. Our conclusions differ from those reached by the first academic enquiries into the legal nature of market neutrality and open an academic debate on the matter. A clear understanding of the legal nature of market neutrality is also essential to assess the validity of the ECB’s climate change action plan.

Abstract: We report on a long-term optical monitoring of the neutron star X-ray binary Centaurus X-4 performed during the last 13.5 years. This source has been in quiescence since its outburst in 1979. Our monitoring reveals the overall evolution of the accretion disc; we detect short-duration flares, likely originating also in the disc, superimposed with a small-amplitude (< 0.1 mag) ellipsoidal modulation from the companion star due to geometrical effects. A long-term (~2300 days) downward trend, followed by a shorter (~1000 days) upward one, is observed in the disc light curve. Such a rise in the optical has been observed for other X-ray binaries preceding outbursts, as predicted by the disc instability model. For Cen X-4, the rise of the optical flux proceeded for ~3 years, and culminated in a flux increase at all wavelengths (optical-UV-X-rays) at the end of 2020. This increase faded after ~2 weeks, without giving rise to a full outburst. We suggest that the propagation of an inside-out heating front was ignited due to a partial ionization of hydrogen in the inner disc. The propagation might have stalled soon after the ignition due to the increasing surface density in the disc that the front encountered while propagating outwards. The stall was likely eased by the low level irradiation of the outer regions of the large accretion disc, as shown by the slope of the optical/X-ray correlation, suggesting that irradiation does not play a strong role in the optical, compared to other sources of emission., Comment: 18 pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

Abstract: We investigate the electronic band structure of modulation-doped GaAs/AlGaAs core-shell nanowires for both n- and p-doping. We developed an 8-band Burt-Foreman k.p Hamiltonian approach to describe coupled conduction and valence bands in heterostructured nanowires of arbitrary composition, growth directions, and doping. Coulomb interactions with the electron/hole gas are taken into account within a mean-field self-consistent approach. We map the ensuing multi-band envelope function and Poisson equations to optimized, non-uniform real-space grids by the finite element method. Self-consistent charge density, single-particle subbands, density of states and absorption spectra are obtained at different doping regimes. For n-doped samples, the large restructuring of the electron gas for increasing doping results in the formation of quasi-1D electron channels at the core-shell interface. Strong heavy-hole/light-hole coupling of hole states leads to non parabolic dispersions with mass inversion, similarly to planar structures, which persist at large dopings, giving rise to direct LH and indirect HH gaps. In p-doped samples the hole gas forms an almost isotropic, ring-like cloud for a large range of doping. Here, as a result of the increasing localization, HH and LH states uncouple, and mass inversion takes place at a threshold density. A similar evolution is obtained at fixed doping as a function of temperature. Abstract: In an increasingly fast-changing and diverse world, the role of socio-emotional skills has become more crucial. These skills are correlated with academic and professional achievement, healthier interactions, and greater well-being. Contrary to commonly believed, socio-emotional skills are not innate and can be taught and learned. Although there are established and accepted standards and curricula available for socio-emotional learning (SEL), they mainly focus on teacher-led instruction in a regular classroom setting, which brings the extra cost of the necessary support and teachers' training. One alternative is using technological resources to develop these skills. However, an open question is which technologies exist for SEL and what is the evidence of their impacts and benefits. This paper presents a systematic mapping to show how socio-emotional skills are being taught using technological resources. We analysed the results and suggested under-explored areas to develop socio-emotional skills with technology and computational artefacts.

Abstract: In the last two decades, very-high-energy gamma-ray astronomy has reached maturity: over 200 sources have been detected, both Galactic and extragalactic, by ground-based experiments. At present, Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) make up about 40% of the more than 200 sources detected at very high energies with ground-based telescopes, the majority of which are blazars, i.e. their jets are closely aligned with the line of sight to Earth and three quarters of which are classified as high-frequency peaked BL Lac objects. One challenge to studies of the cosmological evolution of BL Lacs is the difficulty of obtaining redshifts from their nearly featureless, continuum- dominated spectra. It is expected that a significant fraction of the AGN to be detected with the future Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) observatory will have no spectroscopic redshifts, compromising the reliability of BL Lac population studies, particularly of their cosmic evolution. We started an effort in 2019 to measure the redshifts of a large fraction of the AGN that are likely to be detected with CTA, using the Southern African Large Telescope (SALT). Abstract: $V_2O_3$ has long been studied as a prototypical strongly correlated material. The difficulty in obtaining clean, well ordered surfaces, however, hindered the use of surface sensitive techniques to study its electronic structure. Here we show by mean of X-ray diffraction and electrical transport that thin films prepared by pulsed laser deposition can reproduce the functionality of bulk $V_2O_3$. The same films, when transferred in-situ, show an excellent surface quality as indicated by scanning tunnelling microscopy and low energy electron diffraction, representing a viable approach to study the metal-insulator transition (MIT) in $V_2O_3$ by means of angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. Combined, these two aspects pave the way for the use of $V_2O_3$ thin films in device-oriented heterostructures.

Abstract: The physics of the non-thermal Universe provides information on the acceleration mechanisms in extreme environments, such as black holes and relativistic jets, neutron stars, supernovae or clusters of galaxies. In the presence of magnetic fields, particles can be accelerated towards relativistic energies. As a consequence, radiation along the entire electromagnetic spectrum can be observed, and extreme environments are also the most likely sources of multi-messenger emission. The most energetic part of the electromagnetic spectrum corresponds to the very-high-energy (VHE, E>100 GeV) gamma-ray regime, which can be extensively studied with ground based Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescopes (IACTs). The results obtained by the current generation of IACTs, such as H.E.S.S., MAGIC, and VERITAS, demonstrate the crucial importance of the VHE band in understanding the non-thermal emission of extreme environments in our Universe. In some objects, the energy output in gamma rays can even outshine the rest of the broadband spectrum. The Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) is the next generation of IACTs, which, with cutting edge technology and a strategic configuration of ~100 telescopes distributed in two observing sites, in the northern and southern hemispheres, will reach better sensitivity, angular and energy resolution, and broader energy coverage than currently operational IACTs. Abstract: The most recent Open Doors report by the Institute of International Education (IIE, 2020) indicates that the number of non-white U.S. study abroad students has been steadily growing over the past 10 years, and now it accounts for 31% of all students pursuing part of their education abroad. This study focuses on four Spanish heritage language learners (SHLLs) of Dominican, Mexican, Peruvian, and Colombian/Venezuelan descent with differing Spanish proficiency who enrolled in a short-term study abroad (SA) program for Spanish in Quito, Ecuador during May-June of 2017, 2018, or 2019. This SA program was sponsored by a four-year college in the southeastern U.S. This study included a closed-ended questionnaire, semi-structured interviews, (classroom) observations, e-portfolios, journals, and e-mails. A poststructuralist lens and Norton’s theory of investment were employed to explore the identities of these four undergraduates, their social networks, language, and culture learning opportunities, and how these experiences shaped their individual development. Considerations will be offered in terms of how a social justice-oriented curriculum can be a powerful approach to support the emergence of heritage language identities abroad in socially situated contexts. Civically oriented SA programs have the potential to help SHLLs construct global identities, increase communication skills, and gain global understanding, compassion, and tolerance for social change.

Abstract: Context. Blazars are the most numerous class of High Energy (HE; E about 50 MeV - few 100 GeV) and Very High Energy (VHE; E about 100 GeV - 10 TeV) gamma-ray emitters. As of today, a measured spectroscopic redshift is available for only about 50% of gamma-ray BL Lacs, mainly due to the difficulty of measuring reliable redshifts from their nearly featureless, continuum-dominated optical spectra. The knowledge of the redshift is fundamental for understanding the emission from blazars, for population studies and also for indirect studies of the extragalactic background light and searches for Lorentz invariance violation and axion-like particles using blazars. Aims. This paper is the first of a series of papers which aim to measure the redshift of a sample of blazars likely to be detected with the upcoming Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA), a ground based gamma-ray observatory. Monte Carlo simulations were performed to select those hard spectrum gamma-ray blazars detected with the Fermi-LAT telescope still lacking redshift measurements but likely to be detected by CTA in 30 hours of observing time or less. Optical observing campaigns involving deep imaging and spectroscopic observations were organised to efficiently constrain their redshifts. We performed deep medium to high resolution spectroscopy of nineteen blazar optical counterparts using the ESI spectrograph at Keck, the RSS spectrograph at the SALT telescope, and the EFOSC2 spectrograph at the ESO NTT. We searched systematically for spectral features and, when possible, we estimated the contribution of the host galaxy to the total flux. Results. We measured eleven firm spectroscopic redshifts with values ranging from 0.1116 to 0.482. one tentative redshift, three redshift lower limits including one at z > 0.449 and another at z > 0.868. 46. Anisotropy of the spin-orbit coupling driven by a magnetic field in InAs nanowires

Abstract: We use the $\mathbf{k} \cdot \mathbf{p}$ theory and the envelope function approach to evaluate the Rashba spin-orbit coupling induced in a semiconductor nanowire by a magnetic field at different orientations, taking explicitely into account the prismatic symmetry of typical nano-crystals. We make the case for the strongly spin-orbit-coupled InAs semiconductor nanowires and investigate the anisotropy of the spin-orbit constant with respect to the field direction. At sufficiently high magnetic fields perpendicular to the nanowire, a 6-fold anisotropy results from the interplay between the orbital effect of field and the prismatic symmetry of the nanowire. A back-gate potential, breaking the native symmetry of the nano-crystal, couples to the magnetic field inducing a 2-fold anisotropy, with the spin-orbit coupling being maximized or minimized depending on the relative orientation of the two fields. We also investigate in-wire field configurations, which shows a trivial 2-fold symmetry when the field is rotated off the axis. However, isotropic spin-orbit coupling is restored if a sufficiently high gate potential is applied. Our calculations are shown to agree with recent experimental analysis of the vectorial character of the spin-orbit coupling for the same nanomaterial, providing a microscopic interpretation of the latter., Comment: 12 pages, 14 figures

Abstract: We report on an optical photometric and polarimetric campaign on the accreting millisecond X-ray pulsar (AMXP) SAX J1808.4-3658 during its 2019 outburst. The emergence of a low-frequency excess in the spectral energy distribution in the form of a red excess above the disc spectrum (seen most prominently in z, i and R-bands) is observed as the outburst evolves. This is indicative of optically thin synchrotron emission due to a jet, as seen previously in this source and in other AMXPs during outburst. At the end of the outburst decay, the source entered a reflaring state. The low-frequency excess is still observed during the reflares. Our optical (BVRI) polarimetric campaign shows variable linear polarization (LP) throughout the outburst. We show that this is intrinsic to the source, with low-level but significant detections (0.2-2%) in all bands. The LP spectrum is red during both the main outburst and the reflaring state, favoring a jet origin for this variable polarization over other interpretations, such as Thomson scattering with free electrons from the disc or the propelled matter. During the reflaring state, a few episodes with stronger LP level (1-2 %) are observed. The low-level, variable LP is suggestive of strongly tangled magnetic fields near the base of the jet. These results clearly demonstrate how polarimetry is a powerful tool for probing the magnetic field structure in X-ray binary jets, similar to AGN jets., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ

Abstract: The Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA), the new-generation ground-based observatory for $\gamma$-ray astronomy, provides unique capabilities to address significant open questions in astrophysics, cosmology, and fundamental physics. We study some of the salient areas of $\gamma$-ray cosmology that can be explored as part of the Key Science Projects of CTA, through simulated observations of active galactic nuclei (AGN) and of their relativistic jets. Observations of AGN with CTA will enable a measurement of $\gamma$-ray absorption on the extragalactic background light with a statistical uncertainty below 15% up to a redshift $z=2$ and to constrain or detect $\gamma$-ray halos up to intergalactic-magnetic-field strengths of at least 0.3pG. Extragalactic observations with CTA also show promising potential to probe physics beyond the Standard Model. The best limits on Lorentz invariance violation from $\gamma$-ray astronomy will be improved by a factor of at least two to three. CTA will also probe the parameter space in which axion-like particles could constitute a significant fraction, if not all, of dark matter. 49. Enhanced light-harvesting of protein-pigment complexes assisted by a quantum dot antenna

Abstract: We predict the enhanced light harvesting of a protein-pigment complex when assembled to a quantum dot (QD) antenna. Our prototypical nanoassembly setup is composed of a Fenna-Mattews-Olson system hosting 8 Bacteriochlorophyll (BChl) a dyes, and a near-infrared emitting CdSe$_x$Te$_{(1-x)}$/ZnS alloy-core/shell nanocrystal. BChl a has two wide windows of poor absorption in the green and orange-red bands, precisely where most of the sunlight energy lies. The selected QD is able to collect sunlight efficiently in a broader band and funnel its energy by a (non-radiative) F\"orster resonance energy transfer mechanism to the dyes embedded in the protein. By virtue of the coupling between the QD and the dyes, the nanoassembly absorption is dramatically improved in the poor absorption window of the BChl a., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, presented in the NANOFIM 2018 conference in Mexico City

Abstract: We provide an updated assessment of the power of the Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) to search for thermally produced dark matter at the TeV scale, via the associated gamma-ray signal from pair-annihilating dark matter particles in the region around the Galactic centre. We find that CTA will open a new window of discovery potential, significantly extending the range of robustly testable models given a standard cuspy profile of the dark matter density distribution. Importantly, even for a cored profile, the projected sensitivity of CTA will be sufficient to probe various well-motivated models of thermally produced dark matter at the TeV scale. This is due to CTA's unprecedented sensitivity, angular and energy resolutions, and the planned observational strategy. The survey of the inner Galaxy will cover a much larger region than corresponding previous observational campaigns with imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes. CTA will map with unprecedented precision the large-scale diffuse emission in high-energy gamma rays, constituting a background for dark matter searches for which we adopt state-of-the-art models based on current data. Throughout our analysis, we use up-to-date event reconstruction Monte Carlo tools developed by the CTA consortium, and pay special attention to quantifying the level of instrumental systematic uncertainties, as well as background template systematic errors, required to probe thermally produced dark matter at these energies.
