8. LCA of Integrated MSW Management Systems: Case Study of the Bologna District

Abstract

LCA as a decision-supporting tool in planning integrated municipal solid waste management is not, as yet, widely used in Italy. This paper presents a study concerning the application of the LCA methodology to support the development of the new waste management plan for the Bologna District. The main goal of the study was to show decision-makers at the political level the benefits obtainable with the use of LCA, in terms of the identification and quantification of the potential environmental impacts of different waste management strategies. The integrated waste management system of the Bologna District includes waste collection and transport, sorting, recycling, composting, incineration and landfilling. Three scenarios, referring to 2006 and assuming the presence of 950,000 inhabitants and the production of about 566,000 t of waste in the district, have been compared. A detailed model has been developed in order to capture effects related to the waste fraction from separated collection and to the different waste treatments. Abstract

The WEEE (Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipments, as electric household appliances, electric cables, cathode-ray tubes, personal computers, portable telephones, reloading batteries) represent the 4% of urban waste and are one of the most increasing flow of waste. Today more than 90% of WEEE are placed underground, or burned (incinerated) or filled in discharge, without any treatment, inducing environmental and human health damages. This paper is about Italian experiences of end-life treatment processes and recycling possibility (opportunity) of principal WEEE.

Abstract

Industry is more and more interested in adopting manufacturing processes that permit a more contolled use of natural raw materials and a minimum production of waste, both for economic and environmental reasons founded on the principle of sustainable development. In this context, research into the recycling and re-use of waste materials resulting from the demolition of buildings is highly relevant. Materials of this kind, if treated by specially designed equipment and subjected to specific quality controls, enable the inert material to be regenerated and reintroduced into the manufacturing processes of the same production sector. An increase in the willingness to use these regenerated elements would bring the following environmental advantages: - reduction of the amount of waste produced and a consequent lower level of danger, - re-use, recycling and regeneration of the maximum quantity of waste possible, - reduction of the amount of waste sent to the refuse dump and correct disposal of the residual waste that cannot be regenerated, - prevention and repression of illegal dumping and other illicit behaviour that causes damage to the environment and to citizens’ health, - improvement in the quality of the inert material recycled. The treatment and recycling techniques used for waste from building construction and demolition (from now on termed as C&D waste), consisting for the most part in inert materials, rubble, excavation soil and rocks, enable the production of recycled aggregates with qualitative characteristics comparable to those of natural inert aggregates. From a normative standpoint, both national and European legislation emphasize the need to provide incentives for the advantageous exploitation and regeneration of C&D waste. The same legislation recommends that the methodological approach of Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) should be adopted for the evaluation of environmental impact related to the re-use of waste. However, in Italy the inert waste recycling sector is still having difficulty in taking off because the profit margin is often poor. This is due to the relation existing between the costs connected with the disposal and regeneration operations and the costs correlated to mining activities. This results in the recycling operation being anti-economical and therefore of no interest to operators. To give an example, in certain realities there exists an abundant availability of natural inert materials at moderate prices and this leads to the profit margin of recycling being too low. In fact, throughout Europe C&D waste recycling varies greatly from country to country. In the present study we report the results of research aimed at the evaluation of the technical characteristics of inert material produced from the recycling of both C&D waste and other waste from specific industrial sectors (steel plant and foundries slags, municipal solid waste incineration, , etc.). The characterization of the recycled inert material is carried out by laboratory tests, such as particle size analysis, strength testing (point load test, compression test, R.I.H.N. test) and leaching tests. The whole point behind establishing a technical characterization of these materials is to be able to evaluate their effective introduction into certain technical applications where they can replace natural inert material that has to be mined, with the same guarantee of identical performance and cost levels and with considerable advantages from an environmental standpoint.

26. Fast laser writing of copper and irisium lines from thin solid surface layers of metalorganic compounds

Abstract

Laser direct writing of metal lines from solid metalorganic films coated onsurfaces has been studied in three systems. We report on copper deposition from Cu(HCOO)2· 2H2O at higher writing speeds than previously attained. Direct writing of iridium lines from two novel Ir-cluster films [Ir4(CO)11Br][N(C2H5)4] and [Ir6(CO)15][N(CH3)3C8H17]2is demonstrated. The copper and iridium lines are written on Pyrex. It was found that inhomogeneities in the metalorganic layer are crucial to the quality of the deposited metal. Laser writing of iridium at several cm s-1gives lines of about 10 μm width, with electrical resistivities of the order of 10 times the bulk value.

Abstract

At the moment, in waste management sector, the WEEE (Waste Electrical and Electronically Equipments) represent a topical problem, because they are one of the most increasing waste flow and now they are the 4% of urban waste totality. Actually more then 90% of WEEE are laid underground, incinerated or putted in landfill, without any pre-treatment, with serious damages for environment and human health. Normative law frame is represented by 2002/96/CE European parliament directive (recently modified by 2003/108/CE directive): its own principal purpose is to prevent WEEE production, to stimulate WEEE reuse and recycling, through differentiated picking and the promotion of electrical and electronically equipments eco-design (design for recycling). This paper is about the study of WEEE end-life treatment and recycling processes, in particular about a mobile telephones batteries recycling project, thank to an investigation carries out with Italian firms of the sector: the study is based on the examination of technologies for components separation and also on the destination of the recycling materials obtained by WEEE treatment.
