1. Predictive Modeling of a Lithium Vapor Box Divertor in NSTX-U using SOLPS-ITER

Abstract

The lithium vapor box divertor aims to detach the divertor plasma via evaporating and condensing lithium surfaces. By evaporating lithium near or at the divertor plate and condensing it closer to the main chamber, a lithium vapor density gradient can be created. This density gradient ties energy losses to poloidal distance between the target and the detachment point. The radiation zone is then prevented from reaching the X-point as the lithium ionization rate decreases when the detachment front moves away from the divertor target. Here we present Scrape Off Layer Plasma Simulator (SOLPS) simulations of a lithium vapor box divertor using an NSTX-U equilibrium and PFC geometry. The parameters for the core boundary conditions, gas puff intensity, and heat and particle transport coefficients are chosen to match experimental values. Acceptable agreement with experimental Scrape-Off Layer (SOL) widths is found, indicating a reasonable choice of transport coefficients. In predictive simulations, lithium is added via evaporation at the target. Predictions for peak heat fluxes and upstream impurity concentration are given for a variety of evaporation rates. Target electron temperature is predicted to be able to be reduced to recombination levels (below 1 eV) for lithium evaporation rates of $1\cdot10^{23}$ Li/s, indicating detachment. Peak heat flux at the lower outer target could be reduced by as much as a factor of six while maintaining upstream lithium fractions below 2%. The prevention of lithium from reaching the midplane is shown to be due to an increase in frictional forces acting on the lithium from a deuterium gas puff. Lithium is also shown to be redeposited close to the evaporator which is favorable for initial tests and future capillary porous systems.

Abstract

The lithium vapor box divertor is a concept for handling the extreme divertor heat fluxes in magnetic fusion devices. In a baffled slot divertor, plasma interacts with a dense cloud of Li vapor which radiates and cools the plasma, leading to recombination and detachment. Before testing on a tokamak the concept should be validated: we plan to study detachment and heat redistribution by a Li vapor cloud in laboratory experiments. Mass changes and temperatures are measured to validate a Direct Simulation Monte Carlo model of neutral Li. The initial experiment involves a 5 cm diameter steel box containing 10 g of Li held at 650 degrees C as vapor flows out a wide nozzle into a similarly-sized box at a lower temperature. Diagnosis is made challenging by the required material compatibility with lithium vapor. Vapor pressure a steep function of temperature, so to validate mass flow models to within 10%, absolute temperature to within 4.5 K is required. The apparatus is designed to be used with an analytical balance to determine mass transport. Abstract

As in many of today's tokamaks, plasma start-up in ITER will be performed in limiter configuration on either the inner or outer midplane first wall (FW). The massive, beryllium armored ITER FW panels are toroidally shaped to protect panel-to-panel misalignments, increasing the deposited power flux density compared with a purely cylindrical surface. The chosen shaping should thus be optimized for a given radial profile of parallel heat flux, ${{q}_{||}}$ in the scrape-off layer (SOL) to ensure optimal power spreading. For plasmas limited on the outer wall in tokamaks, this profile is commonly observed to decay exponentially as ${{q}_{||}}={{q}_{0}}\text{exp} ~\left(-r/\lambda _{q}^{\text{omp}}\right)$ , or, for inner wall limiter plasmas with the double exponential decay comprising a sharp near-SOL feature and a broader main SOL width, $\lambda _{q}^{\text{omp}}$ . The initial choice of $\lambda _{q}^{\text{omp}}$ , which is critical in ensuring that current ramp-up or down will be possible as planned in the ITER scenario design, was made on the basis of an extremely restricted L-mode divertor dataset, using infra-red thermography measurements on the outer divertor target to extrapolate to a heat flux width at the main plasma midplane. This unsatisfactory situation has now been significantly improved by a dedicated multi-machine ohmic and L-mode limiter plasma study, conducted under the auspices of the International Tokamak Physics Activity, involving 11 tokamaks covering a wide parameter range with $R=\text{0}\text{.4--2}\text{.8}\,\text{m},\,{{B}_{0}}=\text{1}\text{.2--7}\text{.5}\,\text{T},\,{{I}_{\text{p}}}=\text{9--2500}\,\text{kA}.$ Measurements of $\lambda _{q}^{\text{omp}}$ in the database are made exclusively on all devices using a variety of fast reciprocating Langmuir probes entering the plasma at a variety of poloidal locations, but with the majority being on the low field side. Statistical analysis of the database reveals nine reasonable engineering and dimensionless scalings. All yield, however, similar predicted values of $\lambda _{q}^{\text{omp}}$ mapped to the outside midplane. The engineering scaling with the highest statistical significance, $\lambda _{q}^{\text{omp}}=10{{\left({{P}_{\text{tot}}}/V\,\left(\text{W}\,{{\text{m}}^{-3}}\right)\right)}^{-0.38}}{{\left(a/R/\kappa \right)}^{1.3}}$ , dependent on input power density, aspect ratio and elongation, yields $\lambda _{q}^{\text{omp}}$ = [7, 4, 5] cm for ${{I}_{\text{p}}}$ = [2.5, 5.0, 7.5] MA, the three reference limiter plasma currents specified in the ITER heat and nuclear load specifications. Mapped to the inboard midplane, the worst case (7.5 MA) corresponds to $\lambda _{q}^{\text{imp}}\sim 57\pm 14$ mm, thus consolidating the 50 mm width used to optimize the FW panel toroidal shape.

Abstract

Experimental measurements of the SOL power decay length (${\ensuremath{\lambda}}_{q}$) estimated from analysis of fully attached divertor heat load profiles from two tokamaks, JET and ASDEX Upgrade, are presented. Data was measured by means of infrared thermography. An empirical scaling reveals parametric dependency ${\ensuremath{\lambda}}_{q}$ in $\mathrm{mm}=0.73{B}_{T}^{\ensuremath{-}0.78}{q}_{\mathrm{cyl}}^{1.2}{P}_{\mathrm{SOL}}^{0.1}{R}_{\mathrm{geo}}^{0}$, where ${B}_{T}(T)$ describes the toroidal magnetic field, ${q}_{\mathrm{cyl}}$ the cylindrical safety factor, ${P}_{\mathrm{SOL}}(MW)$ the power crossing the separatrix and ${R}_{\mathrm{geo}}(m)$ the major radius of the device. A comparison of these measurements to a heuristic particle drift-based model shows satisfactory agreement in both absolute magnitude and scaling. Extrapolation to ITER gives ${\ensuremath{\lambda}}_{q}\ensuremath{\simeq}1\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{mm}$.

Abstract

Recent experiments at JET combining reciprocating probe measurements upstream and infrared thermography at the plasma-facing components (PFC) on plasmas in limiter configurations show that the common approach to predicting the power load on the limiter underestimates the heat flux at the contact point by a factor 1.5-3. The current model and scaling laws used for predicting the power load onto the first wall during limiter current ramp-up/down in ITER are uncertain and a better understanding of the heat transport to the PFCs is required. The heat loads on PFCs are usually predicted by projecting the parallel heat flux associated with scrape-off layer (SOL) properties at the outer mid-plane (upstream) along the magnetic field lines to the limiter surface and deducing the surface heat flux through a cosine law, thus ignoring any local effect of the PFC on transport within the SOL. The underestimate of the heat flux is systematic in inner wall limiter configurations, independent of the plasma parameters, whereas in outer limiter configuration this is not observed, probably because of the much shorter SOL power decay length. Models that can explain this enhanced heat flux around the contact point are proposed and discussed although no definitive conclusion can be drawn. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The National Spherical Torus Experiment (NSTX) at Princeton University, Princeton, NJ, is designed to assess the potential of the low-aspect-ratio spherical torus concept for magnetic plasma confinement. The plasma has been heated by up to 7 MW of neutral beam injection (NBI) at an injection energy of 100 keV and up to 6 MW of high harmonic fast wave (HHFW) at 30 MHz. NSTX has achieved βT of 32%. A variety of MHD phenomena have been observed to limit β. NSTX has now begun addressing TE scaling, β limits, and current drive issues. During the NBI heating experiments, a broad Ti profile with Ti up to 2 keV, Ti > Te and a large toroidal rotation were observed. Transport analysis suggests that the impurity ions have diffusivities approaching neoclassical. For L-Mode plasmas, TE is up to two times the ITER97L L-Mode scaling and exceeds the ITER98pby2 H-Mode scaling in some cases. Transitions to H-Mode have been observed which result in an approximate doubling of TE after the transition in some conditions. During HHFW heating, Te > Ti and Te up to 3.5 keV were observed. Current drive has been studied using both coaxial helicity injection with up to 390 kA of toroidal current and HHFW. HHFW has produced H-modes with significant bootstrap current fraction at low Ip, high q, and high βp. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The physics of enhanced confinement regimes in tokamaks is reviewed and some directions for further enhancements are assessed. The H-mode confinement regime is examined. A number of other observations of enhanced confinement, having in common peaked density profiles, are compared to the theory of ion temperature gradient modes. Two schemes of promise in enhancing confinement, second stability and control of electric fields, are discussed.
