The interaction of the antitumor drug cisplatin with insulin was studied using a top-down mass spectrometric approach. In vitro incubations were prepared under acidic and physiological conditions at different insulin/cisplatin molar ratios for different incubation times. Size exclusion chromatography--inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (SEC--ICPMS) analysis enabled the specific detection of platinum containing species attributed to the binding of the drug to the protein. Further analysis through matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization-time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) and nanoelectrospray ionization mass spectrometry using a linear ion trap (nESI-LIT-MS) allowed the identification of platinated mono-, di-, and even triadducts in the incubations. Platinum binding sites were identified by [CID-MS.sup.n] as B chain N-terminus, His5, and probably His10 residues, which turned out to be the same, regardless of the incubation conditions. Evidence on the binding of Pt to B chain Cys7 was also observed. Working with the LIT zoom scan mode provides enough resolution to discern the isotopic pattern for both precursor and fragment ions, allowing the differentiation of platinum-containing ions. The elucidation of platinum binding sites in a native protein through a top-down approach has been performed for the first time with this type of instrument.

Several field trials have been carried out to assess the performance of the passive sampler Chemcatcher as aquatic monitoring technology for inorganic mercury and the organotin pollutants monobutyltin (MBT), dibutyltin (DBT) and tributyltin (TBT) in different types of waters across ten locations in Europe. Two version of the sampler were used. One for mercury that consists on 47 mm Empore™ disks of iminodiacetic chelating groups as the receiving phase overlaid by a diffusion membrane of polyethersulphone; and other for organotin compounds comprising a C18 disk and a cellulose acetate membrane. Both membranes were held in a disposable polycarbonate body. The two samplers were calibrated in the laboratory in a previous work to estimate the pollutant concentration. For field sampling, the samplers were deployed for 14 days. In parallel spot samples were periodically collected during the deployment period for comparison purposes. No significant biofouling on the samplers was observed for the locations monitored. In general, water concentrations estimated by Chemcatcher were lower than those found in spot water samples due to the device only collected the soluble bioavailable fraction of target pollutants. However, the pre-concentration capability of Chemcatcher allowed the determination of the tested pollutants at levels where spot sampling fails, even in difficult water bodies such as sewage treatment plants. Fundamento: Los equipos de atención geriátrica domiciliaria tienen entre sus objetivos el seguimiento de pacientes ancianos con alto riesgo de reingreso hospitalario. Aunque llevan años funcionando en nuestro país, no se tienen datos sobre la repercusión que dicho seguimiento representa en el consumo de recursos hospitalarios. El objetivo del presente estudio es analizar el efecto que supone, sobre dichos recursos, el control por una unidad de atención geriátrica domiciliaria de pacientes con patología cardiorrespiratoria crónica muy evolucionada. Métodos: En el estudio se incluyó a los pacientes con patología cardiorrespiratoria crónica atendidos por la unidad entre enero de 1995 y enero de 1999, habiéndose excluido a los que permanecieron menos de 3 meses en seguimiento. Se comparan el número de visitas al servicio de urgencias hospitalario, ingresos en planta y días de estancia en el año anterior a la atención por la unidad y durante el tiempo de seguimiento por la misma.Resultados: 81 pacientes con una edad media de 80,57 años (DE 7,39) y una mediana de atención por la unidad de 9 meses (5-13,5), fueron incluidos en el estudio. Los consumos por paciente y mes de seguimiento disminuyeron en 0,07 visitas a Urgencias (0,02-0,11) (p=0,04), 0,10 ingresos hospitalarios (0,07-0,14) (p < 0,001), y 2,01 días de ingreso (1,87-2,15) (p < 0,001). Conclusiones: Una unidad especializada de atención geriátrica domiciliaria disminuye el consumo de recursos hospitalarios de población anciana con enfermedad cardiorrespiratoria crónica.

This study delves into the biomolecular mechanisms underlying the antitumoral efficacy of a hybrid nanosystem, comprised of a silver core@shell (Ag@MSNs) functionalized with transferrin (Tf). Employing a SILAC proteomics strategy, we identified over 150 de-regulated proteins following exposure to the nanosystem. These proteins play pivotal roles in diverse cellular processes, including mitochondrial fission, calcium homeostasis, endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress, oxidative stress response, migration, invasion, protein synthesis, RNA maturation, chemoresistance, and cellular proliferation. Rigorous validation of key findings substantiates that the nanosystem elicits its antitumoral effects by activating mitochondrial fission, leading to disruptions in calcium homeostasis, as corroborated by RT-qPCR and flow cytometry analyses. Additionally, induction of ER stress was validated through western blotting of ER stress markers. The cytotoxic action of the nanosystem was further affirmed through the generation of cytosolic and mitochondrial reactive oxygen species (ROS). Finally, in vivo experiments using a chicken embryo model not only confirmed the antitumoral capacity of the nanosystem, but also demonstrated its efficacy in reducing cellular proliferation. We report on the preparation and stereolithographic 3D printing of a resin based on the composite between a poly(ethylene glycol) diacrylate (PEGDA) host matrix and a poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)-poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) filler, and the related cumulative volatile organic compounds' (VOCs) adsorbent properties. The control of all the steps for resin preparation and printing through morphological (SEM), structural (Raman spectroscopy) and functional (I/V measurements) characterizations allowed us to obtain conductive 3D objects of complex and reproducible geometry. These systems can interact with chemical vapors in the long term by providing a consistent and detectable variation of their structural and conductive characteristics. The materials and the manufacture protocol here reported thus propose an innovative and versatile technology for VOCs monitoring systems based on cumulative adsorption effects.

Here we present new 3D printable materials based on the introduction of different commercially available ionic liquids (ILs) in the starting formulations. We evaluate the influence of these additives on the printability of such formulations through light-induced 3D printing (digital light processing-DLP), investigating as well the effect of ionic liquids with polymerizable groups. The physical chemical properties of such materials are compared, focusing on the permeability towards CO 2 of the different ILs present in the formulations. At last, we show the possibility of 3D printing high complexity structures, which could be the base of new high complexity filters for a more efficient CO 2 capture.

Seventy seven cases with discharge before 12 hours post-partum and 240 cases with discharge after 24 or more hours after delivery, were evaluated at Hospital General de México, in an observational, prospective, cohort, study in low risk deliveries. Both groups were reviewed ten days after delivery. There were no different ratios for abnormal uterine hemorrhage, urinary tract infection or endometritis. Thrombophlebitis was more frequent in early discharge patients, both statistically and clinically significant (RR3.58, CI95% 1.48-8.67, P = 0.003). This finding is discussed, as well as measures to prevent it. It is concluded that early discharge programs in low risk conditions, are convenient.
