Objectives During the Middle Ages, Portugal witnessed unprecedented socioeconomic and religious changes under transitioning religious political rule. The implications of changing ruling powers for urban food systems and individual diets in medieval Portugal is poorly understood. This study aimed to elucidate the dietary impact of the Islamic and Christian conquests. Materials and methods Radiocarbon dating, peptide mass fingerprinting (ZooMS) and stable isotope analysis (δ13C, δ15N) of animal (n=59) and human skeletal remains (n=205) from Muslim and Christian burials were used to characterise the diet of a large historical sample from Portugal. A Bayesian stable isotope mixing model (BSIMM) was used to estimate the contribution of marine protein to human diet. Results Early medieval (8th-12th century), pre-conquest urban Muslim populations had mean (±1sd) values of -18.8±0.4 ‰ for δ13C 10.4±1 ‰ for δ15N, indicating a predominantly terrestrial diet, while late medieval (12th-14th century) post-conquest Muslim and Christian populations showed a greater reliance on marine resources with mean (±1sd) values of -17.9 ±1.3‰ for δ13C and 11.1±1.1‰ for δ15N. BSIMM estimation supported a significant increase in the contribution of marine resources to human diet. Discussion The results provide the first biomolecular evidence for a dietary revolution that is not evidenced in contemporaneous historical accounts. We find that society transitioned from a largely agro-pastoral economy under Islamic rule to one characterised by a new focus on marine resources under later Christian rule. This economic change led to the naissance of the marine economy that went on to characterise the early-modern period in Portugal and its global expansion.

Dissertação de mestrado em Estudos da Criança (área de especialização em Sociologia da Infância e Direitos da Criança), Este estudo pretende, partindo daquilo que são os pressupostos da Sociologia da Infância, que olha a criança como uma construção social e como protagonista e não um mero objeto da sociedade e dos Direitos da Criança, investigar a Primeira Infância no Uganda através da ONG Save the Children e do seu projeto de ECD (Early Childhood Development – Desenvolvimento na Primeira Infância). Este projeto permite-nos perceber como são aqui assegurados alguns direitos essenciais para as crianças entre os 0 e os 3 anos de idade, garantindo-lhes um melhor começo de vida, não esquecendo a cultura em que se inserem e que é expressão do seu povo e da sua condição humana. Este estudo realça a importância de um projeto que visa, através das suas intervenções favorecer os direitos da criança no Uganda, recusando práticas centradas numa visão eurocêntrica ou ocidentalizada, destacando as capacidades e as virtudes da cultura ugandesa e usando-a como ferramenta de envolvimento social para a intervenção com as famílias e os bebés/crianças. Esta investigação visou igualmente conhecer as leis e processos políticos, sociais e culturais no Uganda que são promotores dos direitos da criança, na sua concretude e adequação local. Tendo como porta de entrada a Save de Children, seguindo uma metodologia de investigação qualitativa, interpretativa, de natureza etnográfica, o estudo foca-se em perceber como se desenvolvem projetos desta natureza (ECD), quais as etapas, a quem se dirigem, quem intervém, que direitos estão consagrados, quais as entidades intervenientes e sobretudo, que diferença fazem na vida e no futuro das famílias e das crianças alvo do projeto. Este estudo pretende realçar a importância destes dois campos, o da Sociologia da Infância e dos Direitos da Criança, e como uma maior aliança entre os mesmos pode ser determinante para que estes mesmos direitos não sejam esquecidos, pois nunca se soube tanto sobre o que é ser Criança e sobre a Infância e nunca como agora as crianças vivem situações tão significativas de violação da sua condição – a de SER Humano e de Ser Criança., This study aims to investigate Early Childhood in Uganda through the NGO Save the Children and its Early Childhood Development (ECD) project, based on the assumptions of Childhood Sociology, which sees the child as a social construct and a protagonist and not merely an object of society, and the Rights of the Child. This project allows us to see how some essential rights are ensured here for children between 0 and 3 years of age, guaranteeing them a better start in life, not forgetting the culture in which they live and which is an expression of their people and their human condition. This study highlights the importance of a project that aims, through its interventions, to promote the rights of the child in Uganda by refusing practices centered on a eurocentric or westernized vision, highlighting the capacities and virtues of ugandan culture and using it as a social engagement tool for intervention with families and babies/children. This research also aimed at understanding the political, social and cultural laws and processes in Uganda that promote children's rights, in their local concreteness and adequacy. With Save de Children as its gateway, following a qualitative, interpretative, ethnographic research methodology, the study focuses on understanding how projects of this nature (ECD) are developed, which stages, to whom they are addressed, who intervenes, what rights are enshrined, which entities are involved and above all, what difference they make in the life and future of the families and children targeted by the project. The presence of organic pollutants has been shown to have adverse effects on humans and the environment. Mainly due to their large worldwide consumption, active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) were already found in a wide variety of environmental aqueous samples, in concentrations ranging from ng/L to µg/L. Therefore, the treatment of water contaminated with these compounds is extremely important. Ionic liquids (ILs) have a great potential to remove a large array of compounds from aqueous solutions1, including pharmaceuticals2. Despite the several advantages associated to ILs, their immobilization in materials - supported ionic liquids (SILs)3, would overcome some leaching problems. Based on the high potential of SILs in separation/removal techniques and on the health and environmental concerns that we aim to overwhelm, silica-based SILs were investigated to remove pharmaceuticals from aqueous solutions. Several SILs were synthetized, and adsorption kinetics and adsorption isotherms were determined for sodium diclofenac, ketoprofen, naproxen and acetylsalicylic acid. The adsorption mechanisms and maximum equilibrium concentrations depend on the SILs chemical structure and on the drug under study. Overall, the synthetized SILs are efficient adsorbents for pharmaceuticals and perform better than activated carbon typically used for similar purposes. published

© 2001-2021 Sociedade Portuguesa de Reumatologia., Background: The information associated with loss to follow-up (LFU) patients may affect real-world data evaluation of the use of biologics that is not being adequately captured in registries. Methods: We identified all patients(Pts) treated with biologics in our center who had no visits registered for more than 6 months, in the Rheumatic Diseases Portuguese Register, Reuma.pt. We retrieved baseline information from Reuma.pt and from the hospital electronic clinical record. We then performed a telephonic interview to characterize the reasons for LFU at our day care unit. For Pts unable to be contacted by telephone a letter of invitation to an appointment at the hospital was sent. Results: From a total of 794 Ptsregistered in Reuma.pt at our center with active biologic therapy 227 did not have any information registered in the last 6 months. Of this, 36 Pts were on biologic therapy prescribed by other departments and maintained follow-up in these departments. 102 Pts had suspended biologic administration by medical indication and this information was registered in the hospital electronic clinical records but not updated in Reuma.pt. For 89 Pts no information could be retrieved from either the hospital electronic clinical record or Reuma.pt and we classified these Pts as true LFU. 26 of these LFU Pts were being followed up in another Rheumatology center. 26 of the LFU Pts died. 11 Pts had an adverse effect. 4 Pts of the LFU were considering to be in remission. We were not able to contact 15 of the LFU pts. Conclusion: Identifying LFU Pts and clarifying the reason for the loss of data in a register contributes to a better knowledge on strategies to discontinue biologics in stable pts, to a better pharmacovigilance of adverse effects and to more efficiency in data capture by registries. Due to data protection reasons it was impossible to have access to the Pts's death certificates.

O presente trabalho refere-se ao uso do Software GeoGebra nas aulas de matemática no Ensino Básico com alunos do 2º Ano do 2º Ciclo do Ensino Básico de escolaridade. O objetivo deste trabalho é reconhecer as vantagens da utilização deste Software no ensino aprendizagem da Geometria para a descoberta de noções, a aplicação de conceitos e a avaliação de conhecimentos matemáticos. Para atingir o objetivo, fizemos a aplicação de algumas tarefas usando o Software e a sua aplicação em Matemática. A exploração de quadriláteros e as suas propriedades foram abordadas como estratégias a serem aliadas no uso do GeoGebra. A recolha de dados ocorreu a partir de um questionário aplicado aos alunos. Os resultados obtidos revelaram que o uso desta aplicação permitiu aos alunos uma maior compreensão dos conteúdos da Geometria.

Objectives: Case report and historical revision of Bouffu00e9e du00e9lirante and related concepts, connecting them to current diagnoses.Background: Bouffu00e9e du00e9lirante was first described in the 19th century by Magnan. It was characterized by sudden polymorphic symptomatology, fast evolution and remission, with a recurrent course. At the beginning of the 20th century, the term was abandoned over the dichotomic view of Kraepelin, and later recovered by Ey. Later, Kleist named good prognostic phasic psychoses u2018cycloid psychosisu2019 and Wimmer presented the term u2018psychogenic psychosisu2019, later know as reactive psychosis, based on the Jasperian concept of reaction. In Portugal, Barahona-Fernandes proposed the concept of holodysphrenia for polymorphic psychotic clinical pictures without alteration of personality upon remission. Given the different terms for related concepts, we aim to review this subject with a 21th century approach. Materials and Methods: Case report of a 51-year-old man with an acute psychotic episode, preceded by work related conflicts, with remission and insight after 2 days. Personality and functionality were unaltered after remission. Psychiatric history includes a similar episode and a depressive episode, 6 and 5 years before, respectively. Regular ambulatory follow-up for the last 6 months hasnu2019t uncovered any psychotic symptomology.Results and Conclusions: Throughout the history of psychiatry, these psychotic episodes with sudden onset and full remission to premorbid functionality were given various names. Despite the differences, they are now known as acute and transient psychotic disorder (International Classification of Diseases) or brief psychotic disorder (Diagnostic and statistical manual of mental disorders), which may might turn out to be too restrictive in some clinical cases.

Objectives:To test Ernst Kretschmeru2019s temperament and body constitution interplay in the present day.Background:Almost one century ago, Kretschmeru2019s work u201cPhysique and Characteru201d outlined the relationship between physical constitution and temperament. Kretschmer named three basic types of somatic constitutions: pyknic, athletic and asthenic/leptosomic with the former having an affinity with cycloid temperament and the latter two with schizoid temperament. Moreover, cycloid temperament predisposed to circular insanity (nowadays known as bipolar disorder) and schizoid temperament to schizophrenia. Explanations have been gathered throughout the years. For instance, it has been found that the variation of dopaminergic activity in the amygdala may explain in part the personality variants related to the body mass index. Our purpose is to ascertain whether this phenotype-temperament association can still be applied nowadays, given the lifestyle changes since Kretschmeru2019s theory was published.Materials and Methods:Phenotype data was collected from thirty-three patients with a schizoid or cycloid pre-morbid temperament hospitalized in our Psychiatric Ward. All the patients who had previously been on medication for their condition were excluded. Also, a review of the literature was conducted, through the book u201cPhysique and Characteru201d (English translation of the second edition, 1925) and published scientific papers, searched through Pubmed browser.Results and Conclusions:Of the thirty-three patients, twenty-four had leptosomic (n=20) or athletic (n=4) constitution, and in both of them, 83% had schizoid temperament. The remaining 9 patients had pyknic constitution, 78% of which had cycloid temperament. The attribution made by Kretschmer remains valid in the present day.
