The best-yielding, best vigour and most stable Hevea clones are identified by growing clones in different environments. However, research on the stability in Hevea brasiliensis (Willd. Adr. ex Juss.) Muell.-Arg. is scarce. The objectives of this work were to assess genotype-environment interaction and determine stable genotypes. Stability analysis were performed on results for girth growth and rubber yield of seven clones from five comparative trials conducted over 10 years (girth growth) and four years (rubber yield) in São Paulo State, Brazil. Stability was estimated using the Eberhart and Russell (1966) method. Year by location and location variability were the dominant sources of interactions. The stability analysis identified GT 1 and IAN 873 as the most stable clones for girth growth and rubber yield respectively since their regression coefficients were almost the unity (b = 1) and they had one of the lowest deviations from regressions (S2di). Their coefficient of determination (R²) was as high as 89.5% and 89.8% confirming their stability. In contrast, clones such as PB 235, PR 261, and RRIM 701 for girth growth and clones such as GT 1 for rubber yield with regression coefficients greater than one were regarded as sensitive to environment changes.

- Abstract
Several genomic prediction models combining genotype × environment (G×E) interactions have recently been developed and used for genomic selection (GS) in plant breeding programs. G×E interactions reduce selection accuracy and limit genetic gains in plant breeding. Two data sets were used to compare the prediction abilities of multienvironment G×E genomic models and two kernel methods. Specifically, a linear kernel, or GB (genomic best linear unbiased predictor [GBLUP]), and a nonlinear kernel, or Gaussian kernel (GK), were used to compare the prediction accuracies (PAs) of four genomic prediction models: 1) a single-environment, main genotypic effect model (SM); 2) a multienvironment, main genotypic effect model (MM); 3) a multienvironment, single-variance G×E deviation model (MDs); and 4) a multienvironment, environment-specific variance G×E deviation model (MDe). We evaluated the utility of genomic selection (GS) for 435 individual rubber trees at two sites and genotyped the individuals via genotyping-by-sequencing (GBS) of single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs). Prediction models were used to estimate stem circumference (SC) during the first 4 years of tree development in conjunction with a broad-sense heritability (H2) of 0.60. Applying the model (SM, MM, MDs, and MDe) and kernel method (GB and GK) combinations to the rubber tree data revealed that the multienvironment models were superior to the single-environment genomic models, regardless of the kernel (GB or GK) used, suggesting that introducing interactions between markers and environmental conditions increases the proportion of variance explained by the model and, more importantly, the PA. Compared with the classic breeding method (CBM), methods in which GS is incorporated resulted in a 5-fold increase in response to selection for SC with multienvironment GS (MM, MDe, or MDs). Furthermore, GS resulted in a more balanced selection response for SC and contributed to a reduction in selection time when used in

Budwood from seven different clones of rubber tree [Hevea brasiliensis (Willd. ex Adr. de Juss.) Müell. Arg.] was planted in replicated trials in four different test sites in the plateau region of the state of São Paulo, Brazil. The clones represented a range of imported germplasm, whereas the locations were selected to represent a range of rubber growing areas. Girths were measured for six years consecutively, before the initiation of tapping for latex. Total number of latex vessel rings (lvr) and bark thickness (bt) were measured at six years. The largest average for all characters was observed in Matão. Overall means for girth, total number of latex vessel rings and bark thickness at six years were 35.26 cm, 11.30 units and 4.83 mm, respectively. Both the test sites and clones showed statistically significant differences in girth, lvr and bt values. There were significant clone x site interactions. Girth at one year was not a reliable predictor of future field performance. Broad sense heritability for girth was 0.16, and for lvr and bt it was 0.28 and 0.40, respectively, at six years. Repeatability was quite high, from 0.52 to 0.75 for all characters in all years. When two clones out of seven were selected, expected genetic gain in girth was about 2.0%; for lvr and bt it was 7.0% and 14.6%, respectively.

- Abstract
Among rubber tree species, which belong to the Hevea genus of the Euphorbiaceae family, Hevea brasiliensis (Willd. ex Adr.de Juss.) Muell. Arg. is the main commercial source of natural rubber production worldwide. Knowledge of the population structure and linkage disequilibrium (LD) of this species is essential for the efficient organization and exploitation of genetic resources. Here, we obtained single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) using a genotyping-by-sequencing (GBS) approach and then employed the SNPs for the following objectives: (i) to identify the positions of SNPs on a genetic map of a segregating mapping population, (ii) to evaluate the population structure of a germplasm collection, and (iii) to detect patterns of LD decay among chromosomes for future genetic association studies in rubber tree. A total of 626 genotypes, including both germplasm accessions (368) and individuals from a genetic mapping population (254), were genotyped. A total of 77,660 and 21,283 SNPs were detected by GBS in the germplasm and mapping populations, respectively. The mapping population, which was previously mapped, was constructed with 1,062 markers, among which only 576 SNPs came from GBS, reducing the average interval between two adjacent markers to 4.4 cM. SNPs from GBS genotyping were used for the analysis of genetic structure and LD estimation in the germplasm accessions. Two groups, which largely corresponded to the cultivated and wild populations, were detected using STRUCTURE and via principal coordinate analysis. LD analysis, also using the mapped SNPs, revealed that non-random associations varied along chromosomes, with regions of high LD interspersed with regions of low LD. Considering the length of the genetic map (4,693 cM) and the mean LD (0.49 for cultivated and 0.02 for wild populations), a large number of evenly spaced SNPs would be needed to perform genome-wide association studies in rubber tree, and the wilder the genotypes used, the more difficult the ma

- Abstract
Rubber tree (Hevea brasiliensis) cultivation is the main source of natural rubber worldwide and has been extended to areas with suboptimal climates and lengthy drought periods; this transition affects growth and latex production. High-density genetic maps with reliable markers support precise mapping of quantitative trait loci (QTL), which can help reveal the complex genome of the species, provide tools to enhance molecular breeding, and shorten the breeding cycle. In this study, QTL mapping of the stem diameter, tree height, and number of whorls was performed for a full-sibling population derived from a GT1 and RRIM701 cross. A total of 225 simple sequence repeats (SSRs) and 186 single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) markers were used to construct a base map with 18 linkage groups and to anchor 671 SNPs from genotyping by sequencing (GBS) to produce a very dense linkage map with small intervals between loci. The final map was composed of 1,079 markers, spanned 3,779.7 cM with an average marker density of 3.5 cM, and showed collinearity between markers from previous studies. Significant variation in phenotypic characteristics was found over a 59-month evaluation period with a total of 38 QTLs being identified through a composite interval mapping method. Linkage group 4 showed the greatest number of QTLs (7), with phenotypic explained values varying from 7.67 to 14.07%. Additionally, we estimated segregation patterns, dominance, and additive effects for each QTL. A total of 53 significant effects for stem diameter were observed, and these effects were mostly related to additivity in the GT1 clone. Associating accurate genome assemblies and genetic maps represents a promising strategy for identifying the genetic basis of phenotypic traits in rubber trees. Then, further research can benefit from the QTLs identified herein, providing a better understanding of the key determinant genes associated with growth of Hevea brasiliensis under limiting water conditions.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the genetic variability of natural rubber latex traits among 44 elite genotypes of the rubber tree [Hevea brasiliensis (Willd. ex Adr. de Juss.) Müell. Arg.]. Multivariate analysis and machine learning techniques were used, targeting the selection of parents that demonstrate superior characters. We analyzed traits related to technological or physicochemical properties of natural rubber latex, such as Wallace plasticity (P
0 ), the plasticity retention index [PRI (%)], Mooney viscosity (VR ), ash percentage (Ash), acetone extract percentage (AE), and nitrogen percentage (N), to study genetic diversity. Multivariate [unweighted pair group method with arithmetic means (UPGMA) and Tocher)] and machine learning techniques [K-means and Kohonen's self-organizing maps (SOMs)] were employed. The genotypes showed high genetic variability for some of the evaluated traits. The traits PRI, Ash, and PO contributed the most to genetic diversity. The genotypes were classified into six clusters by the UPGMA method, and the results were consistent with the Tocher, K-means and SOM results. PRI can be used to improve the industrial potential of clones. The clones IAC 418 and PB 326 were the most divergent, followed by IAC 404 and IAC 56. These genotypes and others from the IAC 500 and 400 series could be used to start a breeding program. These combinations offer greater heterotic potential than the others, which can be used to improve components of rubber latex quality. Thus, it is important to consider the quality of rubber latex in the early stage of breeding programs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]- Published

ABSTRACTClones of rubber-tree [Hevea brasiliensis (Willd. ex Adr. de Juss.) Muell. Arg.] have achieved the highest yields of rubber in the State of São Paulo, Brazil. The objective of this study was to evaluate the yield and vigor of 14 rubber-tree clones cultivated in the region of Votuporanga and determine changes in the trend of annual correlation to examine the possibility of an early selection based on the studied characters. The yield of rubber was evaluated in the 1/2S d/4 5d/7 11m/y ET 2,5% tapping system, for a period of eight years. Vigor was also examined by measuring the girth for 16 years. The clones IRCA 111 and PB 235 showed the best yield performance. The best results of vigor, was achieves by clones IAC 15 and IAC 44. Genetic and phenotypic correlations were significant and positive for all production years. The significance of the genotypic and phenotypic correlation coefficients of vigor differed in the pre and post-tapping periods. Considering the rubber production found, the clones IRCA 111 and PB 235 can be recommended for small scale cultivation in the region of Votuporanga. The results showed that is possible to make an early selection for yield character, using the data obtained in the first year of evaluation. Because of the differences found in pre and post-tapping, it is not advisable to make an early selection for vigor in the pre-tapping period.

Rubber tree (Hevea brasiliensis) is a native species of Amazon rainforest. This region offers optimal condition for rubber tree growth but also for the fungus Microcyclus ulei development, which causes the South American Leaf Blight (SALB) disease. For this reason, rubber tree is planted in escape regions, such as São Paulo state. The long juvenile period and its perennial nature leads to difficulties for genetic improvement. Molecular markers allows the construction of genetic maps and Quantitative Trait Loci detection (QTL), which can improve and accelerate the breeding scheme. We developed a genetic linkage map of a full-sib population derived from a cross between GT1 and RRIM701 composed of 144 individuals installed at the Agronomical Institute (IAC) in Votuporanga, São Paulo. A total of 227 microsatellite markers were used to construct the integrated linkage map using a multipoint technology based on Hidden Markov Models, with LOD score threshold of 5 and recombination fraction of 0.4. From the total markers mapped, 142 (62.55%) followed a segregation ratio of 1:1:1:1, 45 (19.82%) 1:2:1 and 40 (17.62%) 1:1. The final framework map consists of 23 linkage groups with a total map length of 2583.67 cM and an average marker density of one marker every 10 cM. The largest group has 423.95 cM. Six linkage groups were composed of two or three markers that reflects an incomplete coverage of genome. This genetic map allows localize Quantitative Trait Loci (QTLs) which may help to obtain phenotypes adapted to sub-optimal regions.

Rubber industry has increased the requirements for quality and uniformity of natural rubber produced in Brazil. Technological properties of latex and natural rubber of clones GT 1, PB 235, IAN 873 and RRIM 600 [Hevea brasiliensis (Willd. Former Adr. de Juss.) Muell.- Arg] were evaluated by standard methods of the dry rubber content (DRC%), percentage of nitrogen (N%) and percentage of ashes (ASH%) in two consecutive years; data were correlated with temperature and precipitation. Properties of latex and natural rubber varied (P < 0.01) as a function of clone type and among tappings. DRC decreased in the beginning of the dry season (May to June) and N% and ASH% increased in the same period. April to June was a critical period, when N% was above 0.60%, out of standards established by the technical standard ABNT/NBR in Brazil. Clone RRIM 600 was less susceptible to climatic variations.

The objective of this work was to assess the genetic parameters and to estimate genetic gains in young rubber tree progenies. The experiments were carried out during three years, in a randomized block design, with six replicates and ten plants per plot, in three representative Hevea crop regions of the state of São Paulo, Brazil. Twenty-two progenies were evaluated, from three to five years old, for rubber yield and annual girth growth. Genetic gain was estimated with the multi-effect index (MEI). Selection by progenies means provided greater estimated genetic gain than selection based on individuals, since heritability values of progeny means were greater than the ones of individual heritability, for both evaluated variables, in all the assessment years. The selection of the three best progenies for rubber yield provided a selection gain of 1.28 g per plant. The genetic gains estimated with MEI using data from early assessments (from 3 to 5-year-old) were generally high for annual girth growth and rubber yield. The high genetic gains for annual girth growth in the first year of assessment indicate that progenies can be selected at the beginning of the breeding program. Population effective size was consistent with the three progenies selected, showing that they were not related and that the population genetic variability is ensured. Early selection with the genetic gains estimated by MEI can be made on rubber tree progenies.

This study was designed to evaluate the genetic variability, the potential for rubber yield and secondary traits of rubber tree progenies at three locations in the state of Sao Paulo. The experiments were conducted in a randomized block design with 22 progenies and 6 replications. At the age of three years, the progenies were evaluated for rubber yield, girth growth and total number of latex vessel rings. The results showed the existence of genetic variability among progenies for each location separately as well as between locations, with differences in the progeny performance for the traits. The individual heritabilities calculated for rubber yield, girth growth and total number of latex vessel rings (0.30, 0.63 and 0.29, respectively), associated with high genetic gains with selection for the traits studied at each site, showed that the populations can be considered suitable for the rubber breeding program, provided that an appropriate selection procedure is used.

The objective of this work was to evaluate the performance of 15 clones of the IAC 500 series of Hevea brasiliensis, developed at Instituto Agronômico (IAC), over a 12-year period, in the northwest region of São Paulo State, Brazil. The 15 new clones evaluated are primary clones obtained from selected ortets within half-sib progenies. The clone RRIM 600, of Malaysian origin, was used as the control. Dry rubber yield performance over a four-year period, mean girth at the tenth year, girth increment before and during tapping, thermal properties of the natural rubber produced and other characters of the laticiferous system were evaluated. Forty percent of the clones were superior in comparison to the control for yield. Clone IAC 500 recorded the highest yield (66.81 g per tree per tapping) over four years of tapping, followed by IAC 502 (62.37 g per tree per tapping), whereas the control recorded 48.71 g per tree per tapping. All selected clones were vigorous in growth. The natural rubber from this IAC clones showed thermal stability up to 300ºC. No differences were observed in the thermal behavior of rubber among the IAC series and the RRIM 600 clones. The clones IAC 500, IAC 501, IAC 502, IAC 503 and IAC 506 are the more promising for small-scale plantations, due to growth and yield potential.

The objective of this work was to estimate the genetic parameters, genotypic and phenotypic correlations, and direct and indirect genetic gains among and within rubber tree (Hevea brasiliensis) progenies. The experiment was set up at the Municipality of Jaú, SP, Brazil. A randomized complete block design was used, with 22 treatments (progenies), 6 replicates, and 10 plants per plot at a spacing of 3x3 m. Three‑year‑old progenies were assessed for girth, rubber yield, and bark thickness by direct and indirect gains and genotypic correlations. The number of latex vessel rings showed the best correlations, correlating positively and significantly with girth and bark thickness. Selection gains among progenies were greater than within progeny for all the variables analyzed. Total gains obtained were high, especially for girth increase and rubber yield, which were 93.38 and 105.95%, respectively. Young progeny selection can maximize the expected genetic gains, reducing the rubber tree selection cycle.

In this study, the effect of rootstock on grafting through metabolomic analysis of latex (Hevea brasiliensis) samples was verified by ¹H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and multivariate data analysis. Sixteen metabolites present in the latex cytosol were characterized by NMR. PCA analysis showed that the latex samples of the RR and GR groups can be differentiated. The GR group samples present a metabolic profile similar to the RR group samples, while the RG group is in an intermediate position between RR and GG groups. Sucrose and formate contributed greatly to the separation obtained by PCA, presenting a good correlation between the results. ¹H NMR was an efficient technique to differentiate latex samples from different types of rootstocks and grafting and in the future could be used to predict rubber production by latex analysis.

O teste de progênies proporciona produção de sementes com melhor valor genético, grande variabilidade e baixa endogamia The objective of this work was to evaluate genetic gains of a rubber tree progeny test for dry rubber yield and, based in the largest effective size and largest genetic gain, to get the best individuals. Thirty progenies of half-sib from seeds of mixed pollination - autogamy and outcrossing - clone tests from state of São Paulo were used. An experimental design in randomized block was used with 30 treatments (progenies), three replications, and plots of 10 plants, spaced 3x3 m, comprising a total of 900 useful plants. At three years old, girth growth at 50 cm of the ground (PA50) and dry rubber yield (PBS) were evaluated using the test Hamaker-Mann Morris (HMM). The variables were analyzed through the method of linear mixed model REML/BLUP in progenies that showed mixed mating system and self-pollination rate of 22%. The identification of the 20 best individuals for PBS and PA50 provided a genetic gain of 67.96 and 16.48%, respectively, and an inbreeding coefficient of approximately 2.82%. The progeny test provides seed production with better breeding value, high genetic variability and low inbreeding

This study aimed to estimate genetic values and parameters for plant height, diameter, rubber yield and productivity (g cm-2) of rubber tree progenies. Half-sib progenies were established in a complete randomized block, with 28 treatments, five replicates and 10 plants per plot. At three years of life, the progenies were evaluated regarding the following characters: diameter, rubber production and productivity (g cm²). The estimative coefficients of individual heritabilities (0.33; 0.24 and 0.51) for plant height, diameter and area production, respectively, were considered expressive. For the character of rubber yield the estimative of the coefficient of individual heritability, towards restrictive (9%), although of low magnitude, indicates an excellent chance once selection, it led to an estimate of heritability at family average level, to an equivalent value of 68%. The accuracy among the genetics values predicted and the true ones were of 0.80 for height, 0.76 for diameter, 0.62 for rubber yield and 0.86 for productivity (g cm²). The estimative of individual heritability associated with the average of progenies can maximize the genetic gains with selection in to the population. The inclusion of productivity character is promising and should be considered in future evaluations, supporting the species genetic improvement program in Mato Grosso do Sul State.

Muell.-Arg.] uses mostly the budding propagation method, however the expected stand uniformity due to the use of vegetative propagation is theoretical, since high variation for yield and vigor is caused by rootstock influence. The objective of this study was to assess several combinations between clonal rootstocks and clone scions through diallel analysis, aiming at high productivity and vigor. Data consisted of five years of dry rubber yield and girth at panel opening from an experiment using a split-plot design with four replications, conducted at Pindorama, SP, Brazil, considering six rootstocks (GT 1, IAN 873, PB 235, RRIM 600, RRIM 701 and unselected seedlings) and six scions (GT 1, IAN 873, PB 235, PR 107, RRIM 600 and RRIM 701). A 6 ´ 6 partial diallel analysis summing up 36 combinations was undertaken, and general compatibility for each group of materials (rootstocks and scions) and specific compatibility among all combinations were estimated. The results have shown that PB 235 and IAN 873 rootstocks provided high yields and general compatibility values (7.9348 and 2.7647, respectively). The use of unselected seedlings as rootstocks is not recommended because they presented very low compatibility values for dry rubber yield. Towards growth vigor, the tested rootstocks have shown similar performance.

Natural rubber of latex tapping of four rubber tree clones (Hevea brasiliensis) were prepared by coagulated latex with acetic acid (10%) and air drying at 65 °C (48 hours). DMTA data were used to monitor and evaluate the thermo dynamic-mechanical properties. The results suggest a possible increase in the average molecular mass of polyisoprene and also a variation in its distribution of natural rubber for four rubber tree clones.

É apresentado o desempenho de 19 novos clones de seringueira [Hevea brasiliensis (Willd. exAdr. de Juss.) Muell. The present paper shows the performance of 19 rubber tree [Hevea brasiliensis (Willd. ex Adr. de Juss.) Muell. Arg.] originated from Hevea breeding programme conducted at the Instituto Agronômico de Campinas (IAC) and evaluated in a small scale trial in the northwestern of São Paulo State, Brazil. The old popular clone RRIM 600 of Malaysian origin was used as control. The trial was laid out in a randomized block design with three replications. Concerned to yielding the clone IAC 40 recorded highest yield (62.22 g/tree/tap) over three years of tapping which was followed by IAC 301 (57.67 g/tree/tap) and IAC 300 (50.61 g/tree/tap) yielding 154%, 138% and 123% superior to the control clone and RRIM 600 whereas recorded 41.04 tree/tap. All selected clones were of vigorous growing, with the girth at opening ranging from 37.81 cm for IAC 317 to 50.90 cm for IAC 315 and tappability ranging from 20.0% for IAC 317 to 100% for IAC 315. All the clones experienced low to very low incidence of wind damage. All selected clones showed low to very low incidence of dry trees. Fifteen clones showed high resistance and five presented moderate resistance to anthrachnose panel canker disease similarly to RRIM 600.
