Disk galaxies viewed as thin planar structures resulting from the conservation of angular momentum of an initially rotating pre-galactic cloud allow merely a first-order model of galaxy formation. Still, the presence of vertically extended structures has allowed us to gather a deeper understanding of the richness in astrophysical processes (e.g., minor mergers, secular evolution) that ultimately result in the observed diversity in disk galaxies and their vertical extensions. We measure the stellar disk scale height of 46 edge-on spiral galaxies from the Spitzer Survey of Stellar Structure in Galaxies (S$^{4}$G) project. This paper aims to investigate the radial variation of the stellar disk vertical scale height and the existence of the so-called thick disk component in our sample. The measurements were done using one-, two-, and three-dimensional profile fitting techniques using simple models. We found that two-thirds of our sample shows the presence of a thick disk, suggesting that these galaxies have been accreting gaseous material from their surroundings. We found an average thick-to-thin disk scale height ratio of 2.65, which agrees with previous studies. Our findings also support the disk flaring model, which suggests that the vertical scale height increases with radius. We further found good correlations: between the scale height $h_{z}$ and the scale length and between $h_z$ and the optical de Vaucouleurs radius $R_{25}$., Comment: 28 pages, 24 figures, 4 tables, accepted for publication in ApJ

The redshift evolution of bars is an important signpost of the dynamic maturity of disk galaxies. To characterize the intrinsic evolution safe from band-shifting effects, it is necessary to gauge how bar properties vary locally as a function of wavelength. We investigate bar properties in 16 nearby galaxies from the Spitzer Survey of Stellar Structure in Galaxies (S4G) at ultraviolet, optical and mid-infrared wavebands. Based on the ellipticity and position angle profiles from fitting elliptical isophotes to the two-dimensional light distribution, we find that both bar length and ellipticity - the latter often used as a proxy for bar strength - increase at bluer wavebands. Bars are 9% longer in the B-band than at 3.6 um. Their ellipticity increases typically by 8% in the B-band, with a significant fraction (>40%) displaying an increase up to 35%. We attribute the increase in bar length to the presence of star forming knots at the end of bars: these regions are brighter in bluer bands, stretching the bar signature further out. The increase in bar ellipticity could be driven by the apparent bulge size: the bulge is less prominent at bluer bands, allowing for thinner ellipses within the bar region. Alternatively, it could be due to younger stellar populations associated to the bar. The resulting effect is that bars appear longer and thinner at bluer wavebands. This indicates that band-shifting effects are significant and need to be corrected for high-redshift studies to reliably gauge any intrinsic evolution of the bar properties with redshift., Comment: Accepted to MNRAS

When a galaxy falls into a cluster, its outermost parts are the most affected by the environment. In this paper, we are interested in studying the influence of a dense environment on different galaxy's components to better understand how this affects the evolution of galaxies. We use, as laboratory for this study, the Hydra cluster which is close to virialization; yet it still shows evidence of substructures. We present a multi-wavelength bulge-disc decomposition performed simultaneously in 12 bands from S-PLUS data for 52 galaxies brighter than m$_{r}$= 16. We model the galaxies with a Sersic profile for the bulge and an exponential profile for the disc. We find that the smaller, more compact, and bulge-dominated galaxies tend to exhibit a redder colour at a fixed stellar mass. This suggests that the same mechanisms (ram-pressure stripping and tidal stripping) that are causing the compaction in these galaxies are also causing them to stop forming stars. The bulge size is unrelated to the galaxy's stellar mass, while the disc size increases with greater stellar mass, indicating the dominant role of the disc in the overall galaxy mass-size relation found. Furthermore, our analysis of the environment unveils that quenched galaxies are prevalent in regions likely associated with substructures. However, these areas also harbour a minority of star-forming galaxies, primarily resulting from galaxy interactions. Lastly, we find that ~37 percent of the galaxies exhibit bulges that are bluer than their discs, indicative of an outside-in quenching process in this type of dense environments., Comment: 17 pages, 19 figures. We present JWST/MIRI/MRS observations of an infrared luminous disk galaxy, FLS1, at z=0.54. With a lookback time of 5 Gyr, FLS1 is chronologically at the midpoint between the peak epoch of star formation and the present day. The MRS data provide maps of the atomic fine structure lines [Ar II]6.99 micron, [Ar III]8.99 micron, [Ne II]12.81 micron, and [Ne III]15.55 micron, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) features at 3.3 micron, 6.2 micron, and 11.3 micron, and the warm molecular gas indicators H2S(5) and H2S(3); all these emission features are spatially resolved. We find that the PAH emission is more extended along the Northern side of the galaxy when compared to the well-studied star-formation tracer [Ne II]. The H2 rotational lines, which are shock indicators, are strongest and most extended on the Southern side of the galaxy. [Ar II] is the second brightest fine structure line detected in FLS1 and we show that it is a useful kinematic probe which can be detected with JWST out to z=3. Velocity maps of [Ar II] show a rotating disk with signs of turbulence. Our results provide an example of how spatially resolved mid-infrared spectroscopy can allow us to better understand the star formation and ISM conditions in a galaxy halfway back to the peak epoch of galaxy evolution., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures, 1 table

NGC 4382 is a merger-remnant galaxy that has been classified as morphological type E2, S0, and even Sa. In this work, we performed a photometric and spectroscopic analysis of the globular cluster (GC) system of this peculiar galaxy in order to provide additional information about its history. We used a combination of photometric data in different filters, and multi-object and long-slit spectroscopic data obtained using the Gemini/GMOS instrument. The photometric analysis of the GC system, using the Gaussian Mixture Model algorithm in the colour plane, reveals a complex colour distribution within $R_\mathrm{gal}<5$ arcmin (26.1 kpc), showing four different groups: the typical blue and red subpopulations, a group with intermediate colours, and the fourth group towards even redder colours. From the spectroscopic analysis of 47 GCs, confirmed members of NGC\,4382 based on radial velocities, we verified 3 of the 4 photometric groups from the analysis of their stellar populations using the ULySS code. NGC 4382 presents the classic blue ($10.4\pm2.8$ Gyr, $\mathrm{[Fe/H]}=-1.48\pm0.18$ dex) and red ($12.1\pm2.3$ Gyr, $\mathrm{[Fe/H]}=-0.64\pm0.26$ dex) GCs formed earlier in the lifetime of the galaxy, and a third group of young GCs ($2.2\pm0.9$ Gyr; $\mathrm{[Fe/H]}=-0.05\pm0.28$ dex). Finally, analysis of long-slit data of the galaxy reveals a luminosity-weighted mean age for the stellar population of $\sim$2.7 Gyr, and an increasing metallicity from [Fe/H]=$-0.1$ to $+0.2$ dex in $R_\mathrm{gal}<10$ arcsec (0.87 kpc). These values, and other morphological signatures in the galaxy, are in good agreement with the younger group of GCs, indicating a common origin as a result of a recent merger., Comment: 20 pages, 24 figures. Different mechanisms for quenching star formation in galaxies are commonly invoked in the literature, but the relative impact of each one at different cosmic epochs is still unknown. In particular, the relation between these processes and morphological transformation remains poorly understood. In this work, we measure the effectiveness of changes in star formation rates by analysing a new parameter, the Star Formation Acceleration (SFA), as a function of galaxy morphology. This methodology is capable of identifying both bursting and quenching episodes that occurred in the preceding 300 Myrs. We use morphological classification catalogs based on Deep learning techniques. Our final sample has $\sim$14,200 spirals and $\sim$2,500 ellipticals. We find that elliptical galaxies in the transition region have median shorter quenching timescales ( $\tau$ < 1 Gyr) than spirals ($\tau \geq 1$ Gyr). This result conforms to the scenario in which major mergers and other violent processes play a fundamental role in galaxy evolution for most ellipticals, not only quenching star formation more rapidly but also playing a role in morphological transformation. We also find that $\sim$two thirds of galaxies bursting in the green valley in our sample are massive spirals ($M_\star \geq 10^{11.0}M_\odot$) with signs of disturbance. This is in accordance with the scenario where low mass galaxies are losing their gas in a interaction with a massive galaxy: while the former is quenching, the last is being refueled and going through a burst, showing signs of recent interaction., Comment: 16 pages, 12 figures, accepted by MNRAS

We present the X-ray properties of 108 Dust-Obscured Galaxies (DOGs; F$_{24 \mu m}$/F$_{R} >$ 1000) in the COSMOS field, all of which detected in at least three far-infrared bands with the Herschel Observatory. Out of the entire sample, 22 are individually detected in the hard 2-8 keV X-ray band by the Chandra COSMOS Legacy survey, allowing us to classify them as AGN. Of them, 6 (27%) are Compton Thick AGN candidates with column densities N$_{H}$$>$10$^{24}$ cm$^{-2}$ while 15 are moderately obscured AGNs with 10$^{22}$ $<$ N$_{H}$ $<$ 10$^{24}$ cm$^{-2}$. Additionally, we estimate AGN contributions to the IR luminosity (8-1000$\mu$m rest-frame) greater than 20% for 19 DOGs based on SED decomposition using Spitzer/MIPS 24$\mu$m and the five Herschel bands (100-500 $\mu$m). Only 7 of these are detected in X-rays individually. We performed a X-ray stacking analysis for the 86 undetected DOGs. We find that the AGN fraction in DOGs increases with 24$\mu$m flux and that it is higher than that of the general 24$\mu$m population. However, no significant difference is found when considering only X-ray detections. This strongly motivates the combined use of X-ray and far-IR surveys to successfully probe a wider population of AGNs, particularly for the most obscured ones., Comment: To be published in ApJ

Using a novel approach, we study the quenching and bursting of galaxies as a function of stellar mass ($M_{*}$), local environment ($\Sigma$), and specific star-formation rate (sSFR) using a large spectroscopic sample of $\sim$ 123,000 $GALEX$/SDSS and $\sim$ 420 $GALEX$/COSMOS/LEGA-C galaxies to $z$ $\sim$ 1. We show that out to $z$ $\sim$ 1 and at fixed sSFR and local density, on average, less massive galaxies are quenching, whereas more massive systems are bursting, with a quenching/bursting transition at log($M_{*}$/$M_{\odot}$) $\sim$ 10.5-11 and likely a short quenching/bursting timescale ($\lesssim$ 300 Myr). We find that much of the bursting of star-formation happens in massive (log($M_{*}$/$M_{\odot}$) $\gtrsim$ 11), high sSFR galaxies (log(sSFR/Gyr$^{-1}$) $\gtrsim$ -2), particularly those in the field (log($\Sigma$/Mpc$^{-2}$) $\lesssim$ 0; and among group galaxies, satellites more than centrals). Most of the quenching of star-formation happens in low-mass (log($M_{*}$/$M_{\odot}$) $\lesssim$ 9), low sSFR galaxies (log(sSFR/Gyr$^{-1}$) $\lesssim$ -2), in particular those located in dense environments (log($\Sigma$/Mpc$^{-2}$) $\gtrsim$ 1), indicating the combined effects of $M_{*}$ and $\Sigma$ in quenching/bursting of galaxies since $z$ $\sim$ 1. However, we find that stellar mass has stronger effects than environment on recent quenching/bursting of galaxies to $z$ $\sim$ 1. At any given $M_{*}$, sSFR, and environment, centrals are quenchier (quenching faster) than satellites in an average sense. We also find evidence for the strength of mass and environmental quenching being stronger at higher redshift. We introduce a new methodology for the direct extraction of galaxy physical parameters from multi-wavelength photometry and spectroscopy. We use semi-analytic models that describe galaxy evolution in the context of large scale cosmological simulation to provide a catalog of galaxies, star formation histories, and physical parameters. We then apply stellar population synthesis models and a simple extinction model to calculate the observable broad-band fluxes and spectral indices for these galaxies. We use a linear regression analysis to relate physical parameters to observed colors and spectral indices. The result is a set of coefficients that can be used to translate observed colors and indices into stellar mass, star formation rate, and many other parameters, including the instantaneous time derivative of the star formation rate which we denote the {\it Star Formation Acceleration (SFA)}, We apply the method to a test sample of galaxies with GALEX photometry and SDSS spectroscopy, deriving relationships between stellar mass, specific star formation rate, and star formation acceleration. We find evidence for a mass-dependent SFA in the green valley, with low mass galaxies showing greater quenching and higher mass galaxies greater bursting. We also find evidence for an increase in average quenching in galaxies hosting AGN. A simple scenario in which lower mass galaxies accrete and become satellite galaxies, having their star forming gas tidally and/or ram-pressure stripped, while higher mass galaxies receive this gas and react with new star formation can qualitatively explain our results., Comment: 33 pages, 31 figures, ApJ accepted

We set out to quantify the number density of quiescent massive compact galaxies at intermediate redshifts. We determine structural parameters based on i-band imaging using the CFHT equatorial SDSS Stripe 82 (CS82) survey (~170 sq. degrees) taking advantage of an exquisite median seeing of ~0.6''. We select compact massive (M > 5x10^10 M_sun) galaxies within the redshift range of 0.210. We systematically measure a factor of ~5 more compacts at the same redshift than what was previously reported on smaller fields with HST imaging, which are more affected by cosmic variance. This means that the decrease in number density from z ~ 1.5 to z ~ 0.2 might be only of a factor of ~2-5, significantly smaller than what previously reported. This supports progenitor bias as the main contributor to the size evolution. This milder decrease is roughly compatible with the predictions from recent numerical simulations. Only the most extreme compact galaxies, with Reff < 1.5x( M/10^11 M_sun)^0.75 and M > 10^10.7 M_sun, appear to drop in number by a factor of ~20 and hence likely experience a noticeable size evolution., Comment: 15 pages, 16 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

This White Paper presents the scientific motivations for a multi-object spectrograph (MOS) on the European Extremely Large Telescope (E-ELT). The MOS case draws on all fields of contemporary astronomy, from extra-solar planets, to the study of the halo of the Milky Way and its satellites, and from resolved stellar populations in nearby galaxies out to observations of the earliest 'first-light' structures in the partially-reionised Universe. The material presented here results from thorough discussions within the community over the past four years, building on the past competitive studies to agree a common strategy toward realising a MOS capability on the E-ELT. The cases have been distilled to a set of common requirements which will be used to define the MOSAIC instrument, entailing two observational modes ('high multiplex' and 'high definition'). When combined with the unprecedented sensitivity of the E-ELT, MOSAIC will be the world's leading MOS facility. In analysing the requirements we also identify a high-multiplex MOS for the longer-term plans for the E-ELT, with an even greater multiplex (>1000 targets) to enable studies of large-scale structures in the high-redshift Universe. Following the green light for the construction of the E-ELT the MOS community, structured through the MOSAIC consortium, is eager to realise a MOS on the E-ELT as soon as possible. We argue that several of the most compelling cases for ELT science, in highly competitive areas of modern astronomy, demand such a capability. For example, MOS observations in the early stages of E-ELT operations will be essential for follow-up of sources identified by the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST). In particular, multi-object adaptive optics and accurate sky subtraction with fibres have both recently been demonstrated on sky, making fast-track development of MOSAIC feasible., Comment: Significantly expanded and updated version of previous ELT-MOS White Paper, so there is some textual overlap with arXiv:1303.0029

In this paper, we study the relationship between the 2-10 keV X-ray luminosity (L_X), assumed to originate from X-ray binaries (XRBs), and star formation rate (SFR) in UV-selected z<0.1 Lyman break analogs (LBAs). We present Chandra observations for four new GALEX-selected LBAs. Including previously studied LBAs, Haro 11 and VV 114, we find that LBAs demonstrate L_X/SFR ratios that are elevated by ~1.5sigma compared to local galaxies, similar to the ratios found for stacked LBGs in the early Universe (z>2). We show that these LBAs are unlikely to harbor AGN, based on their optical and X-ray spectra and the spatial distribution of the X-rays in three spatially extended cases. We expect that high-mass X-ray binaries (HMXBs) dominate the X-ray emission in these galaxies, based on their high specific SFRs (sSFRs=SFR/M* > 10^{-9}/yr), which suggest the prevalence of young stellar populations. Since both LBAs and LBGs have lower dust attenuations and metallicities compared to similar samples of more typical local galaxies, we investigate the effects of dust extinction and metallicity on the L_X/SFR for the broader population of galaxies with high sSFRs (>10^{-10}/yr). The estimated dust extinctions (corresponding to column densities of N_H<10^{22}/cm^2) are expected to have insignificant effects on observed L_X/SFR ratio for the majority of galaxy samples. We find that the observed relationship between L_X/SFR and metallicity appears consistent with theoretical expectations from X-ray binary population synthesis models. Therefore, we conclude that lower metallicities, related to more luminous HMXBs such as ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULXs), drive the elevated L_X/SFR observed in our sample of z<0.1 LBAs. The relatively metal-poor, active mode of star formation in LBAs and distant z>2 LBGs may yield higher total HMXB luminosity than found in typical galaxies in the local Universe., Comment: 11 pages, 7 figures, Submitted to ApJ (references updated in v2)

Fibre-fed spectrographs now have throughputs equivalent to slit spectrographs. However, the sky subtraction accuracy that can be reached has often been pinpointed as one of the major issues associated with the use of fibres. Using technical time observations with FLAMES-GIRAFFE, two observing techniques, namely dual staring and cross beam-switching, were tested and the resulting sky subtraction accuracy reached in both cases was quantified. Results indicate that an accuracy of 0.6% on sky subtraction can be reached, provided that the cross beam-switching mode is used. This is very encouraging with regard to the detection of very faint sources with future fibre-fed spectrographs, such as VLT/MOONS or E-ELT/MOSAIC., Comment: to appear in ESO Messenger, March 2013

We present the first integral-field spectroscopic observations of high-redshift submillimeter-selected galaxies (SMGs) using Laser Guide Star Adaptive Optics (LGS-AO). We target H-alpha emission of three SMGs at redshifts z~1.4-2.4 with the OH-Suppressing Infrared Imaging Spectrograph (OSIRIS) on Keck. The spatially-resolved spectroscopy of these galaxies reveals unresolved broad H-alpha line regions (FWHM>1000 km/s) likely associated with an AGN and regions of diffuse star formation traced by narrow-line H-alpha emission (FWHM<500 km/s) dominated by multiple Halpha-bright stellar clumps, each contributing 1-30% of the total clump-integrated H-alpha emission. We find that these SMGs host high star-formation rate surface densities, similar to local extreme sources, such as circumnuclear starbursts and luminous infrared galaxies. However, in contrast to these local environments, SMGs appear to be undergoing such intense activity on significantly larger spatial scales as revealed by extended H-alpha emission over 4-16 kpc. H-alpha kinematics show no evidence of ordered global motion as would be found in a disk, but rather large velocity offsets (~few x 100 km/s) between the distinct stellar clumps. Together with the asymmetric distribution of the stellar clumps around the AGN in these objects, it is unlikely that we are unveiling a clumpy disk structure as has been suggested in other high-redshift populations of star-forming galaxies. The SMG clumps in this sample may correspond to remnants of originally independent gas-rich systems that are in the process of merging, hence triggering the ultraluminous SMG phase., Comment: Accepted to ApJ
