Thermodynamic analysis of the binding process of water-soluble negatively charged meso -tetrakis( p -sulfonatophenyl) (TPPS 4 ) and positively charged meso -tetrakis(4-methylpyridyl) (TMPyP) porphyrins with bovine serum albumin (BSA) at different temperatures was carried out based on the data of BSA quenching fluorescence by porphyrins. The comparison of binding constants ( K b ) shows that negatively charged TPPS 4 possesses higher affinity to BSA than positively charged TMPyP. Thermodynamic characteristics of the binding process were obtained in accordance with the van't Hoff theory by processing nonlinear dependences of ln K b on inverse absolute temperature within the framework of two models: taking into account the dependence or independence of the change in the standard heat capacity (Δ C 0 ) on temperature. A comparison of thermodynamic characteristics with the data obtained from the Förster fluorescence quenching theory and with literature data leads to the conclusion that TPPS 4 is bound to the Sudlow I site (subdomain IIA), while TMPyP is bound to the Heme site (between the subdomains IA and IB). The analysis of Δ C 0 changes with temperature demonstrates that binding of TPPS 4 promotes hydration of nonpolar groups in the protein, which increases with the increase of temperature, while binding of TMPyP decreases the hydration of polar groups of the protein, the effect increasing with rising temperature. Reproductive biotechnologies are widely consolidated as a methodology in cattle breeding and have an important impact on the genetic improvement of cattle herds. Semen is an important source of dissemination of pathogenic microorganisms during reproductive procedures. To ensure the sanitary quality of the semen, it is essential to consider the presence of various microorganisms including viruses. One of the main viral agents of reproductive interest is Bovine Alphaherpesvirus 1 (BoHV-1), the etiological agent responsible for bovine rhinotracheitis and vulvovaginitis and frequently associated with reproductive efficiency of matrices and bulls. In artificial insemination centers, semen treatment is generally based only on the use of antibiotics, ignoring the possibility of inactivating other non-bacterial infectious agents. In this context, photodisinfection emerges as a promising alternative to inactivate a wide range of microorganisms, offering a complementary or substitution approach to those conventional semen treatment methods. In this work, we evaluated the use of four halogenated sulfonated porphyrins as potential photosensitizers (PSs) for photodynamic inactivation of Bovine Alphaherpesvirus I (BoHV-1) for bovine semen disinfection. The PSs were synthesized and photophysical parameters, such as UV-Vis absorption spectra and singlet oxygen quantum yield (Φ Δ ) were presented. Photoinactivation of BoHV-1 was first shown in cell culture and then confirmed in artificially infected bovine semen and then the phototoxicity of PSs against spermatozoa was evaluated. All PSs were effective in BoHV-1 inactivation; however, the photosensitizer containing two chlorine atoms, showed to be more efficient due to the shorter time required for complete viral inactivation. The slight alterations in sperm kinetics were observed, but remained within those acceptable by regulatory agencies for animal reproduction. The bovine tick Rhipicephalus microplus, a primary ectoparasite of veterinary concern, contributes significantly to disease transmission and reduced cattle productivity, resulting in substantial economic losses. The overuse of chemical acaricides has led to the emergence of resistant strains, posing a considerable challenge to veterinary medicine. Consequently, the development of alternative parasite control methods is essential to ensure livestock quality and enhance food safety worldwide. Our study introduces an innovative approach to photodynamic inactivation (PDI) of the bovine tick, harnessing natural daylight for a potential field application. Reproductive parameters (female and egg mass, egg production index, and larval hatch) were evaluated in engorged female ticks under photodynamic action using the hematoporphyrin (HP) and tetra-cationic porphyrins free-base meso-tetra-ruthenated (4-pyridyl) (RuTPyP) and its zinc(II) complex (ZnRuTPyP) as photosensitizers (PS). The results showed that there was no significant difference between the groups treated with tetra‑ruthenium porphyrins and the control group. However, HP exhibits a control percentage of 97.9% at a concentration of 2.5 μmol.L -1 , aligning with the expected control rates achieved by conventional chemical acaricides. Photophysical and physicochemical parameters such as the number of singlet oxygen produced and lipophilicity were discussed for each PS and related to tick control percentages. Furthermore, the interaction between HP and chitin, an important macromolecule presents in the tick's cuticle, considered as the primary target tick structure during PDI was observed by the absorption and fluorescence emission spectroscopic techniques. A supramolecular assembly was obtained by combining methylene blue (MB) with a natural plant extract, curcumin (Curc), in a stoichiometric ratio of 1:4 in aqueous solution (90% PBS + 10% ethanol) at room temperature. The MB-Curc supramolecular assembly was evidenced by absorption and fluorescence spectroscopies, and the stoichiometry and bonding constant were obtained using Cieleńs model. Its stability and photostability were evaluated by chromatographic analysis and UV-Vis absorption. The MB-Curc avoids the aggregation of both isolated compounds and efficiently produces singlet oxygen (Φ Δ = 0.52 ± 0.03). Its potential for photodynamic antiangiogenic treatments was evaluated through the vascular effect observed in chicken chorioallantoic membrane (CAM) assay. The results showed intense damage in CAM vascular network by MB-Curc after irradiation, which is higher than the effect of isolated compounds, indicating a synergistic vascular effect. This combination can be essential to prevent cancer revascularization after photodynamic application and improve the efficacy of this approach. Purpose: The angiogenic, osteogenic and anti-inflammatory activity of latex of Hancornia speciosa has been evidenced and indicates pharmacological potential with great applicability in the health area, especially in the wound healing process. The present work aimed to compare the effects of the H. speciosa macroporous latex biomembrane with saline on wound healing., Methods: Forty-three Wistar rats were submitted to excisional wound induction procedure and divided into groups according to treatment: saline (G1), and macroporous biomembrane (G2). The animals were euthanized at three, seven, 14, and 21 days after injury induction (DAI), and three animals were used for the debridement test. Morphometric, macroscopic, and microscopic analyses of general pathological processes were performed., Results: The macroporous biomembrane minimized necrosis and inflammation during the inflammatory and proliferative phases of the healing process, confirmed by the lower intensity of the crust and the debridement effect. In addition, the wounds treated with the macroporous biomembrane presented greater contraction rates in all the experimental periods analyzed., Conclusions: The macroporous biomembrane presents angiogenic, anti-inflammatory and debridement effects, contributing to the healing process, and can be considered a potentially promising new biomaterial to be used as a dressing.

This work studied the effect of different electron-withdrawing and electron-donating groups on the linear and nonlinear optical properties of acetamide-chalcone derivatives. The results showed that the addition of the dimethylamine group led to a large fluorescence emission (71% of fluorescence quantum yield in DMSO solution) that can be triggered by two and three-photon excitations, which is essential for biological applications. Furthermore, dimethylamine also red-shifts the lower energy state by approximately 90 nm, increasing the two-photon absorption cross-section of the lower energy band by more than 100% compared with the other studied compounds. All compounds presented two-electronic states observed through one and two-photon absorption spectroscopy and confirmed by Quantum Chemistry Calculations (QCCs). QCC results were also used to model the experimental two-photon absorption cross-sectional spectrum by the Sum-Over-States (SOS) approach, revealing a dependence between the coupling of the ground state with the first excited state and the transition dipole moment between these states.

Purpose: Hancornia speciosa latex has shown pharmacological potential in wound healing processes due to its angiogenic, osteogenic, and anti-inflammatory activities. The aims of this study were to carry out a cream-gel formulation with 5, 10 and 25% of H. speciosa serum latex and to evaluate its potential to stimulate the skin regeneration in rats' wounds., Methods: One hundred and twenty rats were divided into five groups: neutral control with saline (G1), cream-gel based on H. speciosa latex serum at 5% m/v (G2), cream-gel at 15% m/v (G3), cream-gel at 25% m/v (G4), and cream-gel (G5). The animals were euthanized at three, seven, 14 and 21 days after the injury induction, and some parameters were analyzed: wound contraction, necrosis, fibrin, polymorphonuclear and mononuclear infiltrates, fibroblast, angiogenesis, hemorrhage, and collagen., Results: The therapeutic treatment with cream-gel at 15 and 25% is beneficial in the inflammatory phase of healing processes since it increased the angiogenesis and proliferation of mononuclear infiltrations in wounds. Regarding wound contraction, the treatment with cream-gel (5 and 15%) induced a higher rate of contraction in the proliferative phase. The 15% cream-gel formulation stimulated a greater production of collagen in the injured tissues., Conclusions: H. speciosa cream-gel is a low-cost herbal medicine which can aid in tissue repair.

Neural circuits can produce similar activity patterns from vastly different combinations of channel and synaptic conductances. These conductances are tuned for specific activity patterns but might also reflect additional constraints, such as metabolic cost or robustness to perturbations. How do such constraints influence the range of permissible conductances? Here we investigate how metabolic cost affects the parameters of neural circuits with similar activity in a model of the pyloric network of the crab Cancer borealis . We present a machine learning method that can identify a range of network models that generate activity patterns matching experimental data and find that neural circuits can consume largely different amounts of energy despite similar circuit activity. Furthermore, a reduced but still significant range of circuit parameters gives rise to energy-efficient circuits. We then examine the space of parameters of energy-efficient circuits and identify potential tuning strategies for low metabolic cost. Finally, we investigate the interaction between metabolic cost and temperature robustness. We show that metabolic cost can vary across temperatures but that robustness to temperature changes does not necessarily incur an increased metabolic cost. Our analyses show that despite metabolic efficiency and temperature robustness constraining circuit parameters, neural systems can generate functional, efficient, and robust network activity with widely disparate sets of conductances.

Neural systems are remarkably robust against various perturbations, a phenomenon that still requires a clear explanation. Here, we graphically illustrate how neural networks can become robust. We study spiking networks that generate low-dimensional representations, and we show that the neurons' subthreshold voltages are confined to a convex region in a lower-dimensional voltage subspace, which we call a 'bounding box'. Any changes in network parameters (such as number of neurons, dimensionality of inputs, firing thresholds, synaptic weights, or transmission delays) can all be understood as deformations of this bounding box. Using these insights, we show that functionality is preserved as long as perturbations do not destroy the integrity of the bounding box. This study reports the synthesis, structural characterization and cytotoxic activity of four new palladium/pyridylporphyrin complexes, with the general formula {TPyP[PdCl(P-P)] 4 }(PF 6 ) 4 , where P-P is 1,2-bis(diphenylphosphino)ethane (dppe), 1,3-bis(diphenylphosphino)propane (dppp), 1,2-bis(diphenylphosphino)butane (dppb) or 1,1'-bis(diphenylphosphino)ferrocene (dppf). The complexes were characterized by elemental analysis, and by FT-IR, UV/Vis, 1 H and 31 P{ 1 H} NMR (1D/2D) spectroscopy. The slow evaporation of a methanolic solution of {TPyP[PdCl(dppb)] 4 }(PF 6 ) 4 (in an excess of NaBF 4 salt) resulted in single crystals suitable for X ray diffraction, allowing the determination of the tridimensional structure of this complex, which crystallized in the P 2 1 / a space group. The cytotoxicity of the complexes against MDA-MB-231 (breast cancer cells) and MCF-10A (non-tumor breast cancer cells), was determined by the colorimetric MTT method, which revealed that all four complexes show selective indexes close to 1.2, lower than that of cisplatin for the same cells (12.12). The interaction of the complexes with CT-DNA was evaluated by UV-visible and viscosity measurements and it was determined that the complexes interact moderately with CT-DNA, probably by H-bonding/π-π stacking and electrostatic interactions.

The present work reports the effects of meso-tetrakis (4-sulfonatophenyl) porphyrin (TPPS 4 ) aggregation on its excited states absorption spectra, triplet states quenching by molecular oxygen and singlet oxygen production. Experimental techniques such as optical absorption, Z-scan with a white light continuum source and the Laser Flash Photolysis were used to fulfil the study. J-aggregates possess reverse saturable absorption in the 505-660 nm spectral range with a peak centered close to 540 nm. These facts together with their fast relaxation time suggest that they can be employed as material for ultrafast optical limiting and switching. Even though aggregation reduces the porphyrin excited-state lifetimes and quantum yields, it does not reduce the probability of the contact between the quencher and the excited aggregate. Aggregation does not change the contribution of energy transfer mechanisms to triplet state quenching by molecular oxygen. The production of singlet oxygen, the intense absorption in the phototherapeutic window and the high efficiency of conversion of light energy into heat, allow consider J-aggregates as a theranostic agent for photomedicine. Plant-derived products can assist in the healing process of dermal wounds. It has been demonstrated that Hancornia speciosa latex present angiogenic, osteogenic, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant activities. Then, it could contribute to the wound healing process. However, natural products in contact with skin may cause dermatitis. The objective of this work was to evaluate the allergic and irritant potential of H. speciosa serum fraction latex using in vitro assays. The obtained results showed that the H. speciosa serum fraction latex has a slightly irritant potential and is not cytotoxic neither allergenic for human cells. Moreover, we identified a remarkable low amount of proteins in this material in comparison to Hevea brasiliensis latex. This result could explain the non-allergenic potential of H. speciosa serum fraction latex because proteins present in latex are the main responsible for allergy. This biomaterial could be used as a non-allergenic source for development of new medicines.

During sleep, the brain undergoes dynamic and structural changes. In Drosophila, such changes have been observed in the central complex, a brain area important for sleep control and navigation. The connectivity of the central complex raises the question about how navigation, and specifically the head direction system, can operate in the face of sleep related plasticity. To address this question, we develop a model that integrates sleep homeostasis and head direction. We show that by introducing plasticity, the head direction system can function in a stable way by balancing plasticity in connected circuits that encode sleep pressure. With increasing sleep pressure, the head direction system nevertheless becomes unstable and a sleep phase with a different plasticity mechanism is introduced to reset network connectivity. Vegetable oils have been used for different applications and, more recently, as an active host medium to obtain nanoparticles for employment in bionanotechnological applications. Nevertheless, oils are very susceptible to oxidation during production, storage, and transportation because of their chemical composition. Consequently, any modification in their production must be accompanied by an analysis of the oxidative stability. In this study, naked and biocompatible gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) were grown on sunflower oil during sputtering deposition using different deposition times. Size and morphology were determined by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and their concentrations were found by inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES). Rancimat ® method was employed to evaluate the AuNPs influence on the oxidative stability of the vegetable oil. Well-dispersed quasi-spherical NPs were produced with a mean diameter in the 2.9-3.7 nm range and they were concentration-dependent on the deposition time. A concentration of about 11 mg/L, 38 mg/L, and 225 mg/L of AuNPs was obtained for a deposition time of 5 min, 15 min, and 30 min, respectively. The results also revealed that AuNPs negatively affected the oxidative stability of the sunflower oil and exponentially reduced the induction period (IP) with the increase in AuNPs content. IP reductions of 63%, 77%, and 81% were determined for the AuNPs containing samples at 11 mg/L, 38 mg/L, and 225 mg/L. For the first time, it is reported that naked AuNPs promote the rapid degradation of vegetable oil and this points out the need for attention relative to the quality of vegetable oils used to host metal nanoparticles.

While metagenomic sequencing has become the tool of preference to study host-associated microbial communities, downstream analyses and clinical interpretation of microbiome data remains challenging due to the sparsity and compositionality of sequence matrices. Here, we evaluate both computational and experimental approaches proposed to mitigate the impact of these outstanding issues. Generating fecal metagenomes drawn from simulated microbial communities, we benchmark the performance of thirteen commonly used analytical approaches in terms of diversity estimation, identification of taxon-taxon associations, and assessment of taxon-metadata correlations under the challenge of varying microbial ecosystem loads. We find quantitative approaches including experimental procedures to incorporate microbial load variation in downstream analyses to perform significantly better than computational strategies designed to mitigate data compositionality and sparsity, not only improving the identification of true positive associations, but also reducing false positive detection. When analyzing simulated scenarios of low microbial load dysbiosis as observed in inflammatory pathologies, quantitative methods correcting for sampling depth show higher precision compared to uncorrected scaling. Overall, our findings advocate for a wider adoption of experimental quantitative approaches in microbiome research, yet also suggest preferred transformations for specific cases where determination of microbial load of samples is not feasible.

Sensory cortices must flexibly adapt their operations to internal states and external requirements. Sustained modulation of activity levels in different inhibitory interneuron populations may provide network-level mechanisms for adjustment of sensory cortical processing on behaviorally relevant timescales. However, understanding of the computational roles of inhibitory interneuron modulation has mostly been restricted to effects at short timescales, through the use of phasic optogenetic activation and transient stimuli. Here, we investigated how modulation of inhibitory interneurons affects cortical computation on longer timescales, by using sustained, network-wide optogenetic activation of parvalbumin-positive interneurons (the largest class of cortical inhibitory interneurons) to study modulation of auditory cortical responses to prolonged and naturalistic as well as transient stimuli. We found highly conserved spectral and temporal tuning in auditory cortical neurons, despite a profound reduction in overall network activity. This reduction was predominantly divisive, and consistent across simple, complex, and naturalistic stimuli. A recurrent network model with power-law input-output functions replicated our results. We conclude that modulation of parvalbumin-positive interneurons on timescales typical of sustained neuromodulation may provide a means for robust divisive gain control conserving stimulus representations., (© The Author(s) 2020. The use of sunscreen has become an indispensable daily routine since UV radiation is a critical environmental stress factors for human skin. This study focused on the design, synthesis, thermal/chemical stability and efficacy/safety evaluations of a new heterocyclic derivative, namely LQFM184, as a photoprotective agent. The compound showed stability when submitted under oxidative and high-temperature conditions. It also revealed an absorption at 260-340 nm (UVA/UVB), with a main band at 298 nm and a shoulder close to 334 nm. LQFM184 showed capacity to interact with other existing UV filters, promoting an increase in the sun protection factor. In relation to acute toxicity, its estimated LD 50 was >300-2000 mg kg -1 , probably with a low potential of inducing acute oral systemic toxicity hazard. In addition, our data showed that this compound did not have eye irritation, skin sensitization or phototoxicity potentials. Taken together, these findings make LQFM184 a promising ingredient to be used, alone or in association with other UV filters, in cosmetic products such as sunscreens with a broad spectrum of protection., (© 2020 American Society for Photobiology.)

In this work, the natural latex extracted from Harconia speciosa was incorporated with silver nanoparticles (AgNP) to compose a functional biomaterial associating the intrinsic angiogenic activity of the latex and the antimicrobial activity of AgNP. Tissue reaction after subcutaneous implantation in dorsum of rats of membranes without AgNP and with 0.05%, 0.4% AgNP was compared at 3, 7 and 25 days. No statistically significant difference in the tissue response of the different biomaterials was observed, indicating that AgNP did not interfere with the inflammatory reaction (p > 0.05) or with the angiogenic activity of latex. Biomembranes were also tested against bacterial biofilm formation by Staphylococcus aureus and the antimicrobial activity of the new biomaterial can be found with bacteria crenation (0.05% AgNP) and no biofilm deposition (0.4% AgNP). Therefore, this biomaterial has interesting properties for the tissue repair process and may be feasible for future applications as dressing.

Mechanistic modeling in neuroscience aims to explain observed phenomena in terms of underlying causes. However, determining which model parameters agree with complex and stochastic neural data presents a significant challenge. We address this challenge with a machine learning tool which uses deep neural density estimators-trained using model simulations-to carry out Bayesian inference and retrieve the full space of parameters compatible with raw data or selected data features. Our method is scalable in parameters and data features and can rapidly analyze new data after initial training. We demonstrate the power and flexibility of our approach on receptive fields, ion channels, and Hodgkin-Huxley models. We also characterize the space of circuit configurations giving rise to rhythmic activity in the crustacean stomatogastric ganglion, and use these results to derive hypotheses for underlying compensation mechanisms. Artificial insemination and in vitro embryo production are increasingly used to improve the reproductive efficiency of herds, however success of these techniques depends on the sanitary quality of the semen. Insemination centers commonly use antibiotics in their routine procedure, but they are not able against viruses. In this paper, we demonstrate a new approach for disinfecting virus in bovine semen using photoimmunoinactivation, an adaptation of the photodynamic inactivation (PDI) methodology. The photosensitizers (PSs), hematoporphyrin (HP) and zinc tetracarboxy-phthalocyanine (ZnPc) were conjugated to Immunoglobulin Y (IgY) anti-bovine alphaherpesvirus 1 (BoHV-1) and used for PDI against the BoHV-1 viruses in cell culture and compared to the unconjugated PSs. Both treatments proved to be efficient, but a significant decrease in the irradiation time required to completely eliminate the virus was observed in the samples treated with the immunoconjugates. Photophysical measurements help us to understand the coupling between PSs and IgY and the evaluated production of singlet oxygen. Following the cell culture test, the same approach was applied in semen artificially infected with BoHV-1. The immunoconjugates were also efficient for complete virus inactivation up to 5 min of irradiation and proved to be safe using several parameters of sperm viability, demonstrating the feasibility of our strategy for disinfection viruses in semen., (Copyright © 2020 Elsevier B.V. The Hancornia speciosa latex reveals angiogenic, osteogenic, and anti-inflammatory properties, which present its potential for developing of wound healing drugs; however, the latex compounds responsible for angiogenesis remain unknown. One strategy to screen these active compounds is evaluation of latex fractions. This study aimed to obtain different fractions of latex and evaluate its angiogenic activity separately using the chick chorioallantoic membrane (CAM) assay. The serum (SE) fraction was responsible for angiogenesis, which was subject to biochemical characterization and computational simulations in order to understand the contribution of H. speciosa latex in wound healing process. Our results revealed weak antioxidant potential and absence of antimicrobial activity in the SE fraction. Phytochemical analysis identified chlorogenic acids (CGA) as the main compound of SE fraction. CGA bioactivity predictions identify different molecules associated with extracellular matrix (ECM) remodeling, such as metalloproteinases, which also are overexpressed in our CAM assay experiment. Docking simulations revealed the interactions between CGA and matrix metalloproteinase 2. In conclusion, SE latex fraction stimulates angiogenesis and may influence ECM remodeling. These properties may contribute to the wound healing process, and also confirm the widespread use of this plant.

To infer changes in the photophysical properties of porphyrins due to complexation with albumin, a combination of Z-scan and conventional spectroscopic techniques was employed. We measured the characteristics of excited states of meso-tetrakis(sulfonatophenyl) porphyrin bound to bovine serum albumin and observed that the binding reduces the intersystem crossing quantum yield and increases the internal conversion one. A reverse saturable absorption process was observed in the nanosecond timescale. These results are important for prediction of the efficiency of this complex in medical and optical applications, because associating porphyrins to proteins enables better accumulation in tumors and improves its stability in optical devices, but at the same time, decreases its triplet quantum yield.

Biogenic silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) were obtained throughout the fungal biosynthesis using extracellular filtrate of the epiphytic fungus B. ochroleuca and were incorporated in cotton and polyester fabrics by common impregnation procedure that was repeated once, twice or four times. Both fabrics were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and the effectiveness of impregnation was determined using inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP OES). The AgNPs loaded fabrics showed potent antimicrobial activity on Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli as well as on clinically relevant Candida albicans, Candida glabrata, and Candida parapsilosis, indicating that the AgNPs impregnation of cotton and polyester fabrics was efficient. AgNPs effectively inhibited the biofilm formation by Pseudomonas aeruginosa and was not toxic to Galleria mellonella larvae indicating a promising probability of biotechnological application.

The sesquiterpene nerolidol is a membrane-active compound that has demonstrated antitumor, antibacterial, antifungal and antiparasitic activities. In this study, we used electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy and biophysical parameters determined via cell culture assays to study the mechanisms underlying the in vitro antileishmanial activity of nerolidol. The EPR spectra of a spin-labeled stearic acid indicated notable interactions of nerolidol with the cell membrane of Leishmania amazonensis amastigotes. The nerolidol IC 50 values in L. amazonensis amastigotes and promastigotes were found to depend on the cell concentration used in the assay. This dependence was described by an equation that considers various cell suspension parameters, such as the 50% inhibitory concentrations of nerolidol in the cell membrane (c m50 ) and the aqueous phase (c w50 ) and the membrane-water partition coefficient of nerolidol (K M/W ). Via cytotoxicity (CC 50 ) and hemolytic potential (HC 50 ) data, these parameters were also determined for nerolidol in macrophages and erythrocytes. With a c w50 of 125 μM, macrophages were less sensitive to nerolidol than amastigotes and promastigotes, which had mean c w50 values of 56 and 74 μM, respectively. The estimated c m50 values of nerolidol for amastigotes and promastigotes and macrophages were between 2.6 and 3.0 M, indicating substantial accumulation of nerolidol in the cell membrane. Recent research has shown that latex from different species is able to produce tissue replacement and regeneration. Particularly, biomembranes obtained from Hancornia speciosa latex (HSB) have shown high angiogenic and osteogenic activity. Considering new materials for wound healing, it would be interesting to develop a product combining antibacterial and antifungal activities. Silver nanoparticles (AgNP) have been commonly used for this purpose in medicinal products and devices for decades. In order to combine angiogenic, antibacterial and antifungal properties on the same platform, we developed an HSB containing 3 concentrations of AgNP. It was observed that the HSB successfully accommodated the AgNP in the matrix and released them in a controlled way. The release dynamics of AgNP by HSB was described by UV-vis absorption spectroscopy. The released nanoparticles were evaluated by Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) and Dynamic Light Scattering (DLS) measurements. In addition, the cytotoxic and genotoxic effects were evaluated using the Allium cepa assay. The results showed no cytotoxic effect of HSB-AgNP in all studied concentrations. The genotoxic effect was observed in HSB-AgNP at the two highest concentrations, however not at the lowest concentration. Thus, the addition of AgNP at the lowest concentration can improve the pharmacological activity of HSB without causing a toxic effect on vegetal cells. Therefore, the H. speciosa latex biomembrane presented in this paper combines angiogenic, anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties and can be considered potentially new biomaterial for wound-healing., (Copyright © 2018 Elsevier B.V. Chalcones and their derivatives exhibit numerous pharmacological activities such as antibacterial, antifungal, cytotoxic, antinociceptive and anti-inflammatory. Recently, they have been assessed aiming for novel application in nonlinear optics and in the treatment of immune diseases and cancers. In this study, we investigate the optical properties of synthetic chalcona 1E,4E-1-(4-chlorophenyl)-5-(2,6,6-trimethylcyclohexen-1-yl)penta-1,4-dien-3-one (CAB7β) and its antiangiogenic potential using the chorioallantoic membrane (CAM) with the S180 sarcoma cell line. Experimental and theoretical results show intense absorption in the UVA-UVC region, which is associated with a π → π* transition with intramolecular charge transfer from the trimethyl-cyclohexen-1-yl ring to the chlorophenyl ring. Quantum chemical calculations of the first hyperpolarizability, accounting for both solvent and frequency dispersion effects, are in very good concordance with hyper-Rayleigh scattering measurements. In addition, two-photon absorption allowed band centered at 650 nm was observed. Concerning antiangiogenic activity, CAB7β causes a significant reduction in the total number, junctions, length and caliber of blood vessels stimulated by S180 cells reducing the presence of blood vessels, inflammatory cells and others elements related to angiogenic process. In this work, the photodynamic efficiency of anionic meso-tetrakis sulfonophenyl (TPPS4), cationic meso-tetrakis methylpyridiniumyl (TMPyP) and their zinc complexes (ZnTPPS4 and ZnTMPyP) in the inactivation of Bovine herpesvirus type 1 (BoHV-1) was evaluated. At a non-cytotoxic concentration, all porphyrins showed significant antiviral activity after irradiation using a halogen lamp. The efficiency of the cationic porphyrins was higher than that of the anionic ones. Porphyrin complexation with zinc increases its lipophilicity and the number of absorbed photons, dramatically reducing the time for complete virus inactivation. The high superposition of the compound optical absorption and light source emission spectra played a key role in the virus inactivation efficiency. The results demonstrated the high effectivity of the photodynamic inactivation of BoHV-1. This method can be used as an auxiliary in the treatment of disorders attributed to BoHV-1 infection, and the porphyrins are promising photosensitizers for this application.

Interaction between porphyrins and quantum dots (QD) via energy and/or charge transfer is usually accompanied by reduction of the QD luminescence intensity and lifetime. However, for CdSe/ZnS-Cys QD water solutions, kept at 276 K during 3 months (aged QD), the significant increase in the luminescence intensity at the addition of meso-tetrakis (p-sulfonato-phenyl) porphyrin (TPPS 4 ) has been observed in this study. Aggregation of QD during the storage provokes reduction in the quantum yield and lifetime of their luminescence. Using steady-state and time-resolved fluorescence techniques, we demonstrated that TPPS 4 stimulated disaggregation of aged CdSe/ZnS-Cys QD in aqueous solutions, increasing the quantum yield of their luminescence, which finally reached that of the fresh-prepared QD. Disaggregation takes place due to increase in electrostatic repulsion between QD at their binding with negatively charged porphyrin molecules. Binding of just four porphyrin molecules per single QD was sufficient for total QD disaggregation. The analysis of QD luminescence decay curves demonstrated that disaggregation stronger affected the luminescence related with the electron-hole annihilation in the QD shell. The obtained results demonstrate the way to repair aged QD by adding of some molecules or ions to the solutions, stimulating QD disaggregation and restoring their luminescence characteristics, which could be important for QD biomedical applications, such as bioimaging and fluorescence diagnostics. On the other hand, the disaggregation is important for QD applications in biology and medicine since it reduces the size of the particles facilitating their internalization into living cells across the cell membrane.

Objectives To determine the concentration of calcium, iron, manganese and zinc ions after the application of chelator to Enterococcus faecalis biofilms. Material and Methods Fifty bovine maxillary central incisors were prepared and inoculated with E. faecalis for 60 days. The following were used as irrigation solutions: 17% EDTA (pH 3, 7 and 10), 2.5% sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) combined with 17% EDTA (pH 3, 7 and 10), distilled water (pH 3, 7 and 10), and 2.5% NaOCl. Each solution was kept in the root canal for five minutes. Fifteen uncontaminated root canals were irrigated with 17% EDTA (pH 3, 7 and 10). Six teeth were used as bacterial control. The number of calcium, iron, manganese and zinc ions was determined using flame atomic absorption spectrometry. Mean ± standard deviation (SD) values were used for descriptive statistics. Results Calcium chelation using 17% EDTA at pH 7 was higher than at pH 3 and 10, regardless of whether bacterial biofilm was present. The highest concentration of iron occurred at pH 3 in the presence of bacterial biofilm. The highest concentration of manganese found was 2.5% NaOCl and 17% EDTA at pH 7 in the presence of bacterial biofilm. Zinc levels were not detectable. Conclusions The pH of chelating agents affected the removal of calcium, iron, and manganese ions. The concentration of iron ions in root canals with bacterial biofilm was higher after the use of 17% EDTA at pH 3 than after the use of the other solutions at all pH levels.

Herein we present the excited state dynamic of zinc and aluminum tetracarboxy-phthalocyanines (ZnPc and AlPc) and its application in the photodynamic inactivation (PDI) of Bovine herpesvirus type 1 (BoHV-1) in vitro. The excited state dynamic provides valuable data to describe the excited state properties of potential optical limiters and/or photosensitizers (PSs), such as: the excited state cross-sections, fluorescence lifetime and triplet state quantum yield. The excited state characterization was performed using three different Z-scan techniques: Single Pulse, White Light Continuum and Pulse Train. Considering the photodynamic inactivation of BoHV-1, an initial viral suspension containing 10 5.75 TCID 50 /mL was incubated with the PSs for 1h at 37°C under agitation and protected from light. The samples were placed in microtiter plates and irradiated (180mW/cm 2 ). During irradiation, a sample was taken every 15min and the viability of the virus was evaluated. The results show that both phthalocyanines were efficient against viruses. However, a higher photodynamic efficiency was observed by ZnPc, which can be attributed to its higher triplet and singlet quantum yields. The results presented here are important for animal health (treatment of BoHV-1) and also open up a field of studies to use AlPc and ZnPc as potential agents against a wide range of microorganisms of veterinary interest., (Copyright © 2017 Elsevier B.V. Modern medicine has been searching for new and more efficient strategies for diagnostics and therapeutics applications. Considering this, porphyrin molecules have received great interest for applications in photodiagnostics and phototherapies, even as magnetic nanoparticles for drug-delivery systems and magnetic-hyperthermia therapy. Aiming to obtain a multifunctional system, which combines diagnostics with therapeutic functions on the same platform, the present study employed UV/vis absorption and fluorescence spectroscopies to evaluate the interaction between meso-tetrakis(p-sulfonatofenyl)porphyrin (TPPS) and maghemite nanoparticles (γ-Fe 2 O 3 ). These spectroscopic techniques allowed us to describe the dynamics of coupling porphyrins on nanoparticles and estimate the number of 21 porphyrins per nanoparticle. Also, the binding parameters, such as the association constants (K a = 8.89 × 10 5 M -1 ) and bimolecular quenching rate constant (k q = 2.54 × 10 14 M -1 s -1 ) were obtained. These results suggest a static quenching process where the electrostatic attraction plays an essential role. The work shows that spectroscopic techniques are powerful tools to evaluate the coupling of organic molecules and nanoparticles. Besides, the system studied provides a relevant background for potential applications in bionanotechnology and nanomedicine, such as (1) nanodrug delivery system, (2) photodiagnostics/theranostics, and/or (3) a combined action of photodynamic and hyperthermia therapies, working in a synergetic way.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the possible protective of C. guianensis oil against MMC and CP, which are direct- and indirect-acting chemical mutagens, using the micronucleus test. Three experiments were performed. First the C. guianensis oil was co-administered to mice at doses of 250, 500 and 1000 mg/kg bw with 4 mg/kg bw MMC or 50 mg/kg bw CP. Second, the mutagenic drug (CP) was administered ip 50 mg/kg bw and after 6 and 12 hours 250 and 500 mg/kg bw of C. guianensis oil were administered. In the last, C. guianensis oil was administrated (250 and 500 mg/kg bw) during five days and after it was administered ip 50 mg/kg bw CP. The results obtained showed that the C. guianensis oil is not cytotoxic neither genotoxic to mouse bone marrow. Regarding the antimutagenic effect, all doses of C. guianensis oil were significantly (p < 0.05) effective in reducing the frequency of micronucleated polychromatic erythrocytes, when compared with MMC or CP alone. Based on these results, our results suggest that the C. guianensis oil shows medicinal potential as an antimutagenic agent, modulating the mutagenicity caused by both direct- and indirect-acting chemical mutagens, in a mammalian model.

The present work reports the synthesis, photophysical and photochemical characterization and photodynamic evaluation of zinc, aluminum and metal free-base tetracarboxy-phthalocyanines (ZnPc, AlPc and FbPc, respectively). To evaluate the possible application of phthalocyanines as a potential photosensitizer the photophysical and photochemical characterization were performed using aqueous (phosphate-buffered solution, PBS) and organic (dimethyl sulfoxide, DMSO) solvents. The relative lipophilicity of the compounds was estimated by the octanol-water partition coefficient and the photodynamic activity evaluated through the photooxidation of a protein and photohemolysis. The photooxidation rate constants (k) were obtained and the hemolytic potential was evaluated by the maximum percentage of hemolysis achieved (Hmax) and the time (t50) to reach 50% of the Hmax. Although these phthalocyanines are all hydrophilic and possess very low affinity for membranes (log PO/W=-2.0), they led to significant photooxidation of bovine serum albumin (BSA) and photohemolysis. Our results show that ZnPc was the most efficient photosensitizer, followed by AlPc and FbPc; this order is the same as the order of the triplet and singlet oxygen quantum yields (ZnPc>AlPc>FbPc). Furthermore, together, the triplet, fluorescence and singlet oxygen quantum yields of zinc tetracarboxy-phthalocyanines suggest their potential for use in theranostic applications, which simultaneously combines photodiagnosis and phototherapy., (Copyright © 2016 Elsevier B.V. In this work, we developed an experimental apparatus to directly measure transmittance and fluorescence in the stratum corneum (SC) ex vivo. The SC transmittance varied from ~6 to ~52 % in the wavelength range of 280-850 nm. For 260-300 nm excitation, the SC autofluorescence showed a strong emission band between 290 and 425 nm, which is associated with tryptophan, and another in the 600-670 nm range, which we attributed to a process involving resonance energy transfer to very hydrophobic keratin filaments. Weaker emission associated with less hydrophobic keratin filaments was also observed in the wavelength range of 350-480 nm. Protoporphyrin IX (PpIX) was incorporated into SC membranes, and its penetration was further increased by the addition of nerolidol to the treatment suspension. Both PpIX and the endogenous porphyrins showed fluorescence anisotropy consistent with their localization in SC membranes, and their molecular dynamics increased significantly in the presence of 1 % nerolidol. The emission and excitation spectra of PpIX and the endogenous SC porphyrins showed similar alterations during the photobleaching induced by 405-nm irradiation. This work also highlights the SC contribution to skin autofluorescence, which could be useful for fluorescence spectroscopy applications in the early diagnosis of skin diseases.

The latex obtained from Hancornia speciosa Gomes (Mangabeira tree) is widely used in traditional medicine to treat a variety of diseases, including diarrhea, ulcer, gastritis, tuberculosis, acne and warts. In this study, the cytotoxicity and genotoxicity effects of H. speciosa latex on the root meristem cells of Allium cepa were examined. Onion bulbs were exposed to different concentrations of latex and then submitted to microscopic analysis using Giemsa stain. Water was used as a negative control and sodium azide as a positive control. The results showed that, under the testing conditions, the mitotic index (MI) of the onion roots submitted to latex treatment did not differ significantly from the negative control, which suggests that the latex is not cytotoxic. Low incidence of chromosome aberrations in the cells treated with H. speciosa latex was also observed, indicating that the latex does not have genotoxic effect either. The MI and the chromosome aberration frequency responded to the latex concentration, requiring more studies to evaluate the dosage effect on genotoxicity. The results indicate that in tested concentrations H. speciosa latex is probably not harmful to human health and may be potentially used in medicine.

This study analyzed the physicochemical and photophysical properties of essential oil of Curcuma longa and its angiogenic potential. The results showed that curcumin is the main fluorescent component present in the oil, although the amount is relatively small. The experimental chorioallantoic membrane model was used to evaluate angiogenic activity, showing a significant increase in the vascular network of Curcuma longa and positive control groups when compared to the neutral and inhibitor controls (P <0.05), but no significant difference was found between Curcuma longa essential oil and the positive control (P >0.05). Histological analysis showed extensive neovascularization, hyperemia and inflammation in the positive control group and Curcuma longa when compared to other controls (P <0.05), characteristic factors of the angiogenesis process. In conclusion, Curcuma longa oil showed considerable proangiogenic activity and could be a potential compound in medical applications.

Hancornia speciosa, popularly known as mangabeira, is a fruit tree native to the Brazilian Cerrado that shows great economic potential, due to its multiple uses. Intraspecific classification of this species is difficult because it shows high morphological diversity. An early study of the species reported that there are six botanic varieties that differ morphologically mainly in the shapes of their leaves and flowers. Except to note the wide morphological variation and economic potential of this species, few studies have been published about the genetic diversity of mangabeira. Knowledge of the genetic variability of this species among populations would be useful for genetic conservation and breeding programs. Therefore, we tested the transferability of 12 simple sequence repeats from expressed sequence tags (EST-SSRs) from Catharanthus roseus to H. speciosa and used 10 random amplified polymorphic DNA markers to evaluate the genetic variability among botanical varieties of H. speciosa. We obtained a high transferability frequency of EST-SSR markers from C. roseus to H. speciosa (75%). However, EST-SSR markers showed low heterozygosity and locus variability (two or three alleles by locus), which suggest low genetic diversity in the mangabeira samples. The Jaccard dissimilarity index and an examination of geographic distances indicated a non-spatial structuring of the genetic variability. Our markers were unable to distinguish H. speciosa botanical varieties.

The latex obtained from Hancornia speciosa is used in folk medicine for treatment of several diseases, such as acne, warts, diabetes, gastritis and inflammation. In this work, we describe the biocompatibility assessment and angiogenic properties of H. speciosa latex and its potential application in medicine. The physical-chemical characterization was carried out following different methodologies (CHN elemental analyses; thermogravimetric analyses and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy). The biocompatibility was evaluated through cytotoxicity and genotoxicity tests in fibroblast mouse cells and the angiogenic properties were evaluated using the chick chorioallantoic membrane (CAM) assay model. The physical-chemical results showed that the structure of Hancornia speciosa latex biomembrane is very similar to that of Hevea brasiliensis (commercially available product). Moreover, the cytotoxicity and genotoxicity assays showed that H. speciosa latex is biocompatible with life systems and can be a good biomaterial for medical applications. The CAM test showed the efficient ability of H. speciosa latex in neovascularization of tissues. The histological analysis was in accordance with the results obtained in the CAM assay. Our data indicate that the latex obtained from H. speciosa and eluted in water showed significant angiogenic activity without any cytotoxic or genotoxic effects on life systems. The same did not occur with H. speciosa latex stabilized with ammonia. Addition of ammonia does not have significant effects on the structure of biomembranes, but showed a smaller cell survival and a significant genotoxicity effect. This study contributes to the understanding of the potentialities of H. speciosa latex as a source of new phytomedicines.

Many neural systems can store short-term information in persistently firing neurons. Such persistent activity is believed to be maintained by recurrent feedback among neurons. This hypothesis has been fleshed out in detail for the oculomotor integrator (OI) for which the so-called "line attractor" network model can explain a large set of observations. Here we show that there is a plethora of such models, distinguished by the relative strength of recurrent excitation and inhibition. In each model, the firing rates of the neurons relax toward the persistent activity states. The dynamics of relaxation can be quite different, however, and depend on the levels of recurrent excitation and inhibition. To identify the correct model, we directly measure these relaxation dynamics by performing optogenetic perturbations in the OI of zebrafish expressing halorhodopsin or channelrhodopsin. We show that instantaneous, inhibitory stimulations of the OI lead to persistent, centripetal eye position changes ipsilateral to the stimulation. Excitatory stimulations similarly cause centripetal eye position changes, yet only contralateral to the stimulation. These results show that the dynamics of the OI are organized around a central attractor state-the null position of the eyes-which stabilizes the system against random perturbations. Our results pose new constraints on the circuit connectivity of the system and provide new insights into the mechanisms underlying persistent activity.

This work reports on the photophysical properties of zinc porphyrins meso-tetrakis methylpyridiniumyl (Zn(2+)TMPyP) and meso-tetrakis sulfonatophenyl (Zn(2+)TPPS) in homogeneous aqueous solutions and in the presence of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and cetyltrimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB) micelles. The excited-state dynamic was investigated with the Z-scan technique, UV-Vis absorption, and fluorescence spectroscopy. Photophysical parameters were obtained by analyzing the experimental data with a conventional five-energy-level diagram. The interaction of the charged side porphyrin groups with oppositely charged surfactants can reduce the electrostatic repulsion between porphyrin molecules leading to aggregation, which affected the porphyrin characteristics such as absorption cross-sections, lifetimes and quantum yields. The interaction between anionic ZnTPPS with cationic CTAB micelles induced the formation of porphyrin J-aggregates, while this effect was not observed in the interaction of ZnTMPyP with SDS micelles. This difference is, probably, due to the difference in electrostatic repulsion between the porphyrin molecules. The insights obtained by these results are important for the understanding of the photophysical behavior of porphyrins, regarding potential applications in pharmacokinetics as encapsulation of photosensitizer for drug delivery systems and in its interaction with cellular membrane., (Copyright © 2013 Elsevier B.V. This work reports on the optical nonlinearities of a newly synthesized pyrazole derivative, namely (E)-1-(4-chlorophenyl)-4-(2-nitrovinyl)-1H-pyrazole. The Z-scan technique with femtosecond laser pulses was used to determine the two-photon absorption (2PA) cross-section spectrum, which presents a maximum of 67 GM at 690 nm. We have combined hyper-Rayleigh scattering (HRS) experiments and second-order Møller-Plesset perturbation theory (MP2) calculations to study the first hyperpolarizability (β(HRS)). It was found that the MP2/6-311+G(d) model, taking into account solvent and dispersion effects, provides the β(HRS) value of 40×10(-30) cm(5)/esu for the compound, in good agreement with the experimental result of 45±2×10(-30) cm(5)/esu., (Copyright © 2012 Elsevier B.V. Paracoccidioidomycosis (PCM) is a systemic mycosis caused by Paracoccidioides brasiliensis. Currently, the treatment approach involves the use of antifungal drugs and requires years of medical therapy, which can induce nephrotoxicity and lead to resistance in yeast strains. Photodynamic inactivation (PDI) is a new therapy capable of killing microorganisms via the combination of a nontoxic dye with visible light to generate toxic reactive oxygen species (ROS). We investigated the phototoxic effect of 5,10,15,20-tetrakis(1-methyl-4-pyridinio)porphyrin (TMPyP), a cationic porphyrin, on the survival of P. brasiliensis following exposure to light. Phototoxicity was found to depend on both the fluence and concentration of the photosensitizer (PS). Although the biological effects of PDI are known, the molecular mechanisms underlying the resultant damage to cells are poorly defined. Therefore, we evaluated the molecular response to PDI-induced oxidative stress by gene transcription analysis. We selected genes associated with the high-osmolarity glycerol (HOG)-mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) pathway and antioxidant enzymes. The genes analyzed were all overexpressed after PDI treatment, suggesting that the oxidative stress generated in our experimental conditions induces antioxidant activity. In addition to PDI-induced gene expression, there was high cell mortality, suggesting that the antioxidant response was not sufficient to avoid fungal mortality., (© 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The present work employs a set of complementary techniques to investigate the influence of outlying Ru(II) groups on the ground- and excited-state photophysical properties of free-base tetrapyridyl porphyrin (H(2)TPyP). Single pulse and pulse train Z-scan techniques used in association with laser flash photolysis, absorbance and fluorescence spectroscopy, and fluorescence decay measurements, allowed us to conclude that the presence of outlying Ru(II) groups causes significant changes on both electronic structure and vibrational properties of porphyrin. Such modifications take place mainly due to the activation of nonradiative decay channels responsible for the emission quenching, as well as by favoring some vibrational modes in the light absorption process. It is also observed that, differently from what happens when the Ru(II) is placed at the center of the macrocycle, the peripheral groups cause an increase of the intersystem crossing processes, probably due to the structural distortion of the ring that implies a worse spin-orbit coupling, responsible for the intersystem crossing mechanism.

Porphyrins are an important class of organic molecules, with interesting linear and nonlinear optical properties given mainly by their extended π-conjugation structure. Their photophysical properties can be greatly affected by the surrounding environment, which can be used to tune its final properties. Here we report on an experimental study of the photophysical properties of meso-tetrakis (methylpyridiniumyl) porphyrin (TMPyP) in aqueous and in several organic solvents and its interaction with micelles formed from negatively charged sodium dodecylsulphate (SDS), positively charged cetyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB) and neutral TRITON X-100. By using the Z-scan technique, flash-photolysis and time-resolved fluorescence techniques, we were able to evaluate the excited state dynamics of the TMPyP, and observed that the tetrapyrrole ring plays important role due to hydrogen bonds formation between nitrogen atom and water, while the side groups determine the porphyrin localization in non-aqueous micelle part., (Crown Copyright © 2011. We report on a method to study the dynamics of triplet formation based on the fluorescence signal produced by a pulse train. Basically, the pulse train acts as sequential pump-probe pulses that precisely map the excited-state dynamics in the long time scale. This allows characterizing those processes that affect the population evolution of the first excited singlet state, whose decay gives rise to the fluorescence. The technique was proven to be valuable to measure parameters of triplet formation in organic molecules. Additionally, this single beam technique has the advantages of simplicity, low noise and background-free signal detection.

We report experimental and theoretical studies of the two-photon absorption spectrum of two nitrofuran derivatives: nitrofurantoine, (1-(5-nitro-2-furfurilideneamine)-hidantoine) and quinifuryl, 2-(5(')-nitro-2(')-furanyl)ethenyl-4-{N-[4(')-(N,N-diethylamino)-1(')-methylbutyl]carbamoyl} quinoline. Both molecules are representative of a family of 5-nitrofuran-ethenyl-quinoline drugs that have been demonstrated to display high toxicity to various species of transformed cells in the dark. We determine the two-photon absorption cross-section for both compounds, from 560 to 880 nm, which present peak values of 64 GM for quinifuryl and 20 GM for nitrofurantoine (1 GM = 1×10(-50)cm(4).s.photon(-1)). Besides, theoretical calculations employing the linear and quadratic response functions were carried out at the density functional theory level to aid the interpretations of the experimental results. The theoretical results yielded oscillator strengths, two-photon transition probabilities, and transition energies, which are in good agreement with the experimental data. A higher number of allowed electronic transitions was identified for quinifuryl in comparison to nitrofurantoine by the theoretical calculations. Due to the planar structure of both compounds, the differences in the two-photon absorption cross-section values are a consequence of their distinct conjugation lengths.

The excited state dynamics of Zn2+, Fe3+, and Mn3+ meso-tetra(sulfonatophenyl) porphyrin complexes were investigated with a Z-scan technique at 532 nm using 70 ps and 120 fs single pulses and 200 ns pulse trains of a Q-switched and mode locked laser. We determined the characteristic interconversion and intersystem crossing times, quantum yields of the excited S1 state, and S1 --> Sn and T1 --> Tn transition cross-sections. The ground state cross-sections were obtained using UV-vis absorption spectroscopy, and a five-energy-level diagram was used to yield the photophysical parameters mentioned previously.
