Root Cause Analysis (RCA) aims at identifying the underlying causes of system faults by uncovering and analyzing the causal structure from complex systems. It has been widely used in many application domains. Reliable diagnostic conclusions are of great importance in mitigating system failures and financial losses. However, previous studies implicitly assume a full observation of the system, which neglect the effect of partial observation (i.e., missing nodes and latent malfunction). As a result, they fail in deriving reliable RCA results. In this paper, we unveil the issues of unobserved confounders and heterogeneity in partial observation and come up with a new problem of root cause analysis with partially observed data. To achieve this, we propose PORCA, a novel RCA framework which can explore reliable root causes under both unobserved confounders and unobserved heterogeneity. PORCA leverages magnified score-based causal discovery to efficiently optimize acyclic directed mixed graph under unobserved confounders. In addition, we also develop a heterogeneity-aware scheduling strategy to provide adaptive sample weights. Extensive experimental results on one synthetic and two real-world datasets demonstrate the effectiveness and superiority of the proposed framework.

The rapid evolution of large language models (LLMs) holds promise for reforming the methodology of spatio-temporal data mining. However, current works for evaluating the spatio-temporal understanding capability of LLMs are somewhat limited and biased. These works either fail to incorporate the latest language models or only focus on assessing the memorized spatio-temporal knowledge. To address this gap, this paper dissects LLMs' capability of spatio-temporal data into four distinct dimensions: knowledge comprehension, spatio-temporal reasoning, accurate computation, and downstream applications. We curate several natural language question-answer tasks for each category and build the benchmark dataset, namely STBench, containing 13 distinct tasks and over 60,000 QA pairs. Moreover, we have assessed the capabilities of 13 LLMs, such as GPT-4o, Gemma and Mistral. Experimental results reveal that existing LLMs show remarkable performance on knowledge comprehension and spatio-temporal reasoning tasks, with potential for further enhancement on other tasks through in-context learning, chain-of-though prompting, and fine-tuning. In online advertising, marketing mix modeling (MMM) is employed to predict the gross merchandise volume (GMV) of brand shops and help decision-makers to adjust the budget allocation of various advertising channels. Traditional MMM methods leveraging regression techniques can fail in handling the complexity of marketing. Although some efforts try to encode the causal structures for better prediction, they have the strict restriction that causal structures are prior-known and unchangeable. In this paper, we define a new causal MMM problem that automatically discovers the interpretable causal structures from data and yields better GMV predictions. To achieve causal MMM, two essential challenges should be addressed: (1) Causal Heterogeneity. The causal structures of different kinds of shops vary a lot. (2) Marketing Response Patterns. Various marketing response patterns i.e., carryover effect and shape effect, have been validated in practice. We argue that causal MMM needs dynamically discover specific causal structures for different shops and the predictions should comply with the prior known marketing response patterns. Thus, we propose CausalMMM that integrates Granger causality in a variational inference framework to measure the causal relationships between different channels and predict the GMV with the regularization of both temporal and saturation marketing response patterns. Extensive experiments show that CausalMMM can not only achieve superior performance of causal structure learning on synthetic datasets with improvements of 5.7%\sim 7.1%, but also enhance the GMV prediction results on a representative E-commerce platform., Comment: WSDM 2024, full version

Motivated by the first observation of the double-charm tetraquark $T_{cc}^+(3875)$ by the LHCb Collaboration, we investigate the nature of $T_{cc}^+$ as an isoscalar $DD^*$ hadronic molecule in a meson-exchange potential model incorporated by the coupled-channel effects and three-body unitarity. The $D^0D^0\pi^+$ invariant mass spectrum can be well-described and the $T_{cc}^+$ pole structure can be precisely extracted. Under the hypothesis that the interactions between the heavy flavor hadrons can be saturated by the light meson-exchange potentials, the near-threshold dynamics of $T_{cc}^+$ can shed light on the binding of its heavy-quark spin symmetry (HQSS) partner $D^*D^*$ ($I=0$) and on the nature of other heavy hadronic molecule candidates such as $X(3872)$ and $Z_c(3900)$ in the charmed-anticharmed systems. The latter states can be related to $T_{cc}^+$ in the meson-exchange potential model with limited assumptions based on the SU(3) flavor symmetry relations. The combined analysis, on the one hand, indicates the HQSS breaking effects among those HQSS partners, and on the other hand, highlights the role played by the short and long-distance dynamics for the near threshold $D^{(*)}D^{(*)}$ and $D^{(*)}\bar{D}^{(*)}+c.c.$ systems., Comment: Revtex, 24 pages, 11 figures; version to appear in Phys. Realizing controllable room-temperature ferromagnetism in carbon-based materials is one of recent prospects. The magnetism in graphene nanostructures reported previously is mostly formed near the vacancies, zigzag edges, or impurities by breaking the local sublattice imbalance, though a bulk chiral spin-density-wave ground state is also reported at van Hove filling due to its perfectly nested Fermi surface. Here, combining of the first-principles and tight-binding model simulations, we predict a robust ferromagnetic domain lies between the inter-chain carbon atoms inside the zigzag graphene nanoribbons by applying a potential drop. We show that the effective zigzag edges provide the strong correlation background through narrowing the band width, while the internal Van Hove filling provides the strong ferromagnetic background inherited from the bulk. The induced ferromagnetism exhibit interesting switching effect when the nominal Van Hove filling crosses the intra- and inter-chain region by tuning the potential drops. We further observe a robust half-metallicity transition from one spin channel to another within the same magnetic phase. Temporal data, representing chronological observations of complex systems, has always been a typical data structure that can be widely generated by many domains, such as industry, medicine and finance. Analyzing this type of data is extremely valuable for various applications. Thus, different temporal data analysis tasks, eg, classification, clustering and prediction, have been proposed in the past decades. Among them, causal discovery, learning the causal relations from temporal data, is considered an interesting yet critical task and has attracted much research attention. Existing causal discovery works can be divided into two highly correlated categories according to whether the temporal data is calibrated, ie, multivariate time series causal discovery, and event sequence causal discovery. However, most previous surveys are only focused on the time series causal discovery and ignore the second category. In this paper, we specify the correlation between the two categories and provide a systematical overview of existing solutions. Topological superconductivity is an exotic quantum phenomenon with coupled nontrivial topological order and superconductivity together. A direct idea for producing topological superconductors is to create superconductivity based on the well recognized topological insulators. The topological insulating states in highly efficient thermoelectric materials Bi$_2$Te$_3$ and Bi$_2$Se$_3$ and their alloy Bi$_{2}$Te$_{3-x}$Se$_{x}$ have been established from angle-resolved photoemission and transport experiments. Superconductivity was also observed based on these popular topological insulators by the application of pressure chemical dopant and heterostructures. However, the experiments mainly focusing on Bi$_{2}$Se$_3$ doped by metals have not provided the consistent evidence to support the topological superconductivity. Here we carry out a systematic high-pressure study on a topological insulator Bi$_{2}$Te$_{2.7}$Se$_{0.3}$ to provide the convincing evidence for the expected topological superconductivity. Four phases with different structures are found upon compression. The topological surface state is identified in the entire initial phase, while superconductivity is found to coexist with such a state of the compressed material after its passing the electronic topological transition, followed by three other superconducting phases without topological character. For these superconducting phases, we observe that the upper critical field follows with the temperature in the critical exponent ${2/3}$ for the first one with the topological surface state and $1$ for the left. These observations support the realization of the topological superconductivity in the initial phase according to the theoretically proposed critical field measure. Following the observation of the fully-heavy tetraquark candidates $X(6900)$ and possible $X(6300)$ in the di-$J/\psi$ spectrum by the LHCb Collaboration, we investigate the near-threshold dynamics of the pseudoscalar quarkonium pairs in a coupled-channel approach in the di-$\eta_c$ channel. We show that the Pomeron exchange mechanism should be a general dynamics in the near-threshold heavy quarkonium pair interactions. In the di-$\eta_c$ channel, a coupled-channel system involving the di-$\eta_c$, $\eta_c$-$\eta_c(2S)$ and di-$\eta_c(2S)$ interactions can be established. Their $S$-wave interactions near threshold via the Pomeron exchange potential can produce near-threshold resonance poles similar to the di-$J/\psi$, $J/\psi$-$\psi(2S)$ and di-$\psi(2S)$ coupled channels. Interestingly, we find here that the pole positions are more shifted to the corresponding thresholds and turn out to be different from those seen in the di-$J/\psi$ spectrum. Taking into account the suppression of the heavy quark spin flips in the transitions between two vector and two pseudoscalar heavy quarkonium systems, the enhancements in the di-$\eta_c$ spectrum should be different from those seen in the di-$J/\psi$ channel. Multi-touch attribution (MTA), aiming to estimate the contribution of each advertisement touchpoint in conversion journeys, is essential for budget allocation and automatically advertising. Existing methods first train a model to predict the conversion probability of the advertisement journeys with historical data and calculate the attribution of each touchpoint using counterfactual predictions. An assumption of these works is the conversion prediction model is unbiased, i.e., it can give accurate predictions on any randomly assigned journey, including both the factual and counterfactual ones. Nevertheless, this assumption does not always hold as the exposed advertisements are recommended according to user preferences. This confounding bias of users would lead to an out-of-distribution (OOD) problem in the counterfactual prediction and cause concept drift in attribution. In this paper, we define the causal MTA task and propose CausalMTA to eliminate the influence of user preferences. It systemically eliminates the confounding bias from both static and dynamic preferences to learn the conversion prediction model using historical data. We also provide a theoretical analysis to prove CausalMTA can learn an unbiased prediction model with sufficient data. Extensive experiments on both public datasets and the impression data in an e-commerce company show that CausalMTA not only achieves better prediction performance than the state-of-the-art method but also generates meaningful attribution credits across different advertising channels., Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures This paper has been accepted in KDD 2022

The integer quantum Hall state occurs when the Landau levels are fully occupied by the fermions, while the fractional quantum Hall state usually emerges when the Landau level is partially filled by the strongly correlated fermions or bosons. Here, we report two fractional Chern insulating states of the hard-core bosons in a multi-band lattice model hosting topological flat bands with high Chern number. The previously proposed $\nu=1/3$ fractional Chern insulating state inherited from the high Chern number $C=2$ of the lowest topological flat band is revisited by the infinite density matrix renormalization group algorithm. In particular, we numerically identify a bosonic $1/2$-Laughlin-like fractional Chern insulating state at the integer fillings. We show two lower topological flat bands jointly generate an effective $C=1$ Chern band with half-filling. Furthermore, we find a strictly particle-hole-like symmetry between the $\nu$ and $3-\nu$ filling in our model. These findings extend our understanding of quantum Hall states and offer a new route to realize the novel fractional states in the system with multi-bands and high-Chern numbers., Comment: 9 pages, 7 figures

Lepton scattering is an established ideal tool for studying inner structure of small particles such as nucleons as well as nuclei. As a future high energy nuclear physics project, an Electron-ion collider in China (EicC) has been proposed. It will be constructed based on an upgraded heavy-ion accelerator, High Intensity heavy-ion Accelerator Facility (HIAF) which is currently under construction, together with a new electron ring. The proposed collider will provide highly polarized electrons (with a polarization of $\sim$80%) and protons (with a polarization of $\sim$70%) with variable center of mass energies from 15 to 20 GeV and the luminosity of (2-3) $\times$ 10$^{33}$ cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$. Polarized deuterons and Helium-3, as well as unpolarized ion beams from Carbon to Uranium, will be also available at the EicC. The main foci of the EicC will be precision measurements of the structure of the nucleon in the sea quark region, including 3D tomography of nucleon; the partonic structure of nuclei and the parton interaction with the nuclear environment; the exotic states, especially those with heavy flavor quark contents. In addition, issues fundamental to understanding the origin of mass could be addressed by measurements of heavy quarkonia near-threshold production at the EicC. In order to achieve the above-mentioned physics goals, a hermetical detector system will be constructed with cutting-edge technologies. We show that the Pomeron exchanges play a unique role in vector charmonium scatterings. Such a mechanism can provide a natural explanation for the nontrivial structures in the di-$J/\psi$ spectrum observed by the LHCb Collaboration. The narrow structure $X(6900)$, as a dynamically generated resonance pole, can arise from the Pomeron exchanges and coupled-channel effects between the $J/\psi$-$J/\psi$, $J/\psi$-$\psi(2S)$ scatterings. A pole structure near the di-$J/\psi$ threshold is also found. Meanwhile, we predict that $X(6900)$ can produce significant threshold enhancement in the $J/\psi$-$\psi(2S)$ energy spectrum which can be searched for at LHCb., Comment: 6 pages, 3 eps figures; version to appear in Phys. Chern insulator or quantum anomalous Hall state is a topological state with integer Hall conductivity but in absence of Landau level. It had been well established on various two-dimensional lattices with periodic structure. Here, we report similar Chern insulators can also be realized on the quasicrystal with $5$-fold rotational symmetry. Providing the staggered flux through plaquettes, we propose two types of quasicrystalline Chern insulators. Their topological characterizations are well identified by the robustness of edge states, non-zero real-space Chern number, and quantized conductance. We further find the failure of integer conductivity but with quantized Chern number at some special energies. The fractional quantum anomalous Hall (FQAH) states or fractional Chern insulator (FCI) states have been studied on two-dimensional (2D) flat lattices with different boundary conditions. Here, we propose the geometry-dependent FCI/FQAH states that interacting particles are bounded on 2D singular lattices with arbitrary $n$-fold rotational symmetry. Based on the generalized Pauli principle, we construct trial wave functions for the singular-lattice FCI/FQAH states with the aid of an effective projection approach, and compare them with the exact diagonalization results. High wave-function overlaps show that the singular-lattice FCI/FQAH states are certainly related to the geometric factor $\beta$. More interestingly, we observe some exotic degeneracy sequences of edge excitations in these singular-lattice FCI/FQAH states, and provide an explanation that two branches of edge excitations mix together., Comment: 9 pages, 7 figures

We calculate $\Lambda$ and $\bar{\Lambda}$ hadron production cross sections in charged lepton semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering off nuclear target ($A$, using iron $\mathrm{Fe}$ as an example) and deuteron ($D$) target. The results show that the ratio $(\bar{\Lambda}^{A}/\Lambda^{A})/(\bar{\Lambda}^{D}/\Lambda^{D})$ is sensitive to the sea quark content of the nucleus. We adopt three different models to take the nuclear EMC effect into account. The ratio $(\bar{\Lambda}^{A}/\Lambda^{A})/(\bar{\Lambda}^{D}/\Lambda^{D})$ is predicted to be different by these different models., Comment: 9 pages, 10 figures

Topological quantum states have been proposed and investigated on two-dimensional flat surfaces or lattices with different geometries like the plane, cylinder and torus. Here, we study quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) or Chern insulator (CI) states on two-dimensional singular surfaces (such as conical and helicoid-like surfaces). Such singular geometries can be constructed based on the disk geometry and a defined unit sector with $n$-fold rotational symmetry. The singular geometry induces novel and intriguing features of CI/QAH states, such as in-gap and in-band core states, charge fractionalization, and multiple branches of edge excitations., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures

The hour-glass-like dispersion of spin excitations is a common feature of underdoped cuprates. It was qualitatively explained by the random phase approximation based on various ordered states with some phenomenological parameters; however, its origin remains elusive. Here, we present a numerical study of spin dynamics in the $t$-$J$ model using the variational Monte Carlo method. This parameter-free method satisfies the no double-occupancy constraint of the model and thus provides a better evaluation on the spin dynamics with respect to various mean-field trial states. We conclude that the lower branch of the hour-glass dispersion is a collective mode and the upper branch is more likely the consequence of the stripe state than the other candidates., Comment: 7 pages, 7 figures

The topological properties in topological superconductors are usually characterized by the bulk Chern numbers, edge-state spectra, and Majorana zero modes. Whether they are equivalent or inequivalent is not well understood. Here, we investigate this issue with focus on a checkerboard-lattice model combining the Chern insulator and chiral $p$-wave superconductivity. Multiple topologically superconducting phases with Chern numbers up to $\mathcal{N}=4$ are produced. We explicitly demonstrate the mismatch between the Chern numbers, edge states and Majorana zero modes in this two-dimensional topological-superconductor model. The intrinsic reason is that some edge states in the superconducting phases inherited from the Chern-insulator phase are not protected by the particle-hole symmetry. We further check the mismatches in vortex states. Our results therefore clarify these different but complementary topological features and suggest that further considerations are required to characterize various topological superconductors., Comment: 14 pages, 5 figures

Quantum confinement and interference often generate exotic properties in nanostructures. One recent highlight is the experimental indication of a magnetic phase transition in zigzag-edged graphene nanoribbons at the critical ribbon width of about 7 nm [G. Z. Magda et al., Nature \textbf{514}, 608 (2014)]. Here we show theoretically that with further increase in the ribbon width, the magnetic correlation of the two edges can exhibit an intriguing oscillatory behavior between antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic, driven by acquiring the positive coherence between the two edges to lower the free energy. The oscillation effect is readily tunable in applied magnetic fields. These novel properties suggest new experimental manifestation of the edge magnetic orders in graphene nanoribbons, and enhance the hopes of graphene-like spintronic nanodevices functioning at room temperature., Comment: 22 pages, 9 figures
