16. Comparative study of heat transfer enhancement on liquid-vapor separation plate condenser

Abstract

Basic structures of liquid-vapor separation cooling plates (LSCPs) and a liquid-vapor separation plate condenser (LVSPC) are innovatively designed. Strengthening heat transfer principle of the LSCPs is demonstrated by theoretical analysis. The average condensation heat transfer coefficients (ACHTCs) of the LSCPs are calculated and compared with conventional cooling plate (CCP). Results show that for a laminar flow, the ACHTCs of 2-parts liquid-vapor separation cooling plate and 3-parts liquid-vapor separation cooling plate are respectively 19% and 32% higher than the ACHTCs of the CCP in the same conditions. The ACHTC ratio of N-parts liquid-vapor separation cooling plates (NLSCP) to CCP is N4$\sqrt[4]{N}$in the same conditions. For a turbulent flow, results show the smaller the height of condensation area, the greater the ACHTCs of cooling plate. In the LVSPC study, operation conditions include the refrigerant R134a mass flux ranging from 22 to 32 kg/(m2.s) and inlet vapor quality from 0.5 to 1 for the saturated temperature of 40∘C. Calculation results showed that the ACHTCs of the LVSPC are 6–24% higher than the ACHTCs of the given common plate condenser (CPC), and similar to the CPC, the ACHTCs of the LVSPC increases with the increase of mass flux and vapor quality.

Abstract

This study investigates the application of the entransy analysis in ammonia/salt absorption heat pump (AHP) systems. The results of the entransy analysis are compared with those of energy analysis and exergy analysis under typical and various operating conditions. Entransy dissipation and exergy loss in each component, as well as coefficient of performance (COP), exergy efficiency and entransy efficiency of systems, are discussed. The changing trends of entransy dissipation in each component are similar under various operating conditions. However, the entransy analysis performs better than the exergy analysis in evaluating the irreversible loss of each component. Moreover, the differences between the exergy analysis and entransy analysis are mainly in absorber, generator and SHE. Especially in the NH3/NaSCN system, the proportion of entransy dissipation in generator is 60.8%, which is almost twice of the proportion of exergy loss (34.9%). In addition, under various operating conditions, entransy efficiency and COP have roughly the same changing trend. Meanwhile, entransy efficiency is more reasonable than exergy efficiency in evaluating the performance of systems under the absorption temperature, which varies from 30°C to 50°C. These comparison results demonstrate that the entransy analysis is appropriate to evaluate the performance of ammonia/salt AHP systems and suitable for analyzing the irreversibility of each component.

Abstract

The potential of ammonia/ionic liquids half-effect absorption refrigeration cycle (ARC) has been investigated. The thermodynamic model of the half-effect ARC and the property models of ammonia/ionic liquid working pairs have been established with verified accuracy. In addition, the thermodynamic and economic performance comparisons between the four ammonia/ionic liquid working pairs and ammonia/water in the half-effect ARC cycle are conducted. With coefficient of performance (COP) and solution circulation ratio as key performance indicators in this paper, the results reveal that, in general, the COP of the four ammonia/ionic liquid working pairs is higher than that of the ammonia/water, and there exists an optimum generation temperature for the cycle to achieve the highest COP. With the cooling capacity per unit UA, the cycle's economic performance is studied. Under the typical operating conditions, the COP of working pairs with [emim][BF4] has the highest value (0.342), followed by [dema][Ac] (0.330), [dmim][DMP] (0.300) and [emim][SCN] with the lowest value (0.293). And the cooling capacity per unit UA of ammonia/[emim][BF4] has the highest value. Moreover, compared to the other candidates, ammonia/[emim][BF4] performs best under most operating conditions and can be recommended as a reasonable working pair for the half-effect ARC.

Abstract

The paper presents the effect of exhaust gas and inlet air temperature on thermal efficiency for boiler system. Based on the numerical model, the performance indexes of boiler system are calculated at different conditions using EES (Engineering Equation Software). The results show that when the exhausted gas or inlet air temperature increases 10-15°C, the heat loss of exhaust gas decreases 0.8%-1% and thermal efficiency of boiler system increases 0.8%-1%; The crucial factors that can affect thermal efficiency are exhaust gas temperature and fuel volatile ratio; seven optimized schemes are designed for a case of boiler system. A new methodology is provided for evaluating the efficiency of boiler system.

Abstract

The paper presents different kinds of optimization scheme of air-condition system based on equipment technologies and variable parameters in Guangzhou. Coefficients of performance (COP) and energy efficiency of rate (EER) are the main index of air-condition system. The results show that the percentage of optimized air-condition systems are of different weight ratio based on analytic hierarchy process method. Pump and compressor frequency conversion technologies and higher indoor temperature are the main energy efficiency measurements for air-condition system. The results provide a new methodology for evaluating the air conditioning system construction.

Abstract

With the drastic decrease in fossil resources and rapid deterioration of the global environment, the utilization of geothermal resources has been strongly advocated. The combination of heat, power, and cold utility generation is commonly used to increase the utilization efficiency of geothermal resources. In this study, an integrated cascade utilization system of waste geothermal water (ICUWGW) from a flash geothermal power plant in China is established to increase the utilization efficiency of geothermal water. The waste geothermal water leaving the power plant is proposed for further use in cascade for two-stage LiBr/H2O absorption cooling, agricultural product drying, and residential bathing. Twelve candidate temperature schemes showing different inlet and outlet temperatures of every subsystem are proposed for the ICUWGW. Several criteria are selected for the evaluation and screening of the candidate schemes. Grey relational analysis incorporating analytic hierarchy process is conducted to screen the optimal temperature scheme for the ICUWGW to meet the comprehensive criteria of thermodynamics and economics. Results show that the optimal scheme features significant improvement in energy efficiency, exergy efficiency, and equivalent electricity generation efficiency compared with those of the current geothermal power plant. The investment payback time of the additional subsystems for cooling, drying, and bathing is 1.85 years. Exergy analysis is also conducted to determine the further optimization potential of the optimal ICUWGW. Abstract

Abstract: One of the greatest problems in using renewable energy sources is the great variability of energy level, both in the short and long term. Geothermal energy, by nature, has high availability because the source is not dependent on weather conditions, so it is among the most stable renewable energy sources. In China, urban populations are provided with their electricity requirements, but rural areas need guaranteed electricity for socio-economic development. Fortunately, mid-low temperature geothermal resources are located proximal to rural areas without access to grid electricity in China. Small-scale geothermal power plants can support electricity demand as well as create employment opportunities for the rural public. Therefore, geothermal energy has the potential to play an important role in the future energy supply of China. Based on mid-low temperature geothermal resource and waste heat resource, the paper introduces the energy efficiency of single-flash and binary cycle geothermal power plant. The result shows that binary cycle plant is favorable for power generation when water temperature is below 130 °C, otherwise, flash steam power plant is a better choice. Furthermore, two project cases were analyzed in the end, focusing on the operating parameters and thermal efficiency. The single-flash and binary cycle geothermal power plants could be improved energy efficiency of low-grade resources and both widely utilized in China. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]
