5. The spectroscopic binary system Gl 375. I. Orbital parameters and chromospheric activity

Abstract

We study the spectroscopic binary system Gl 375. We employ medium resolution echelle spectra obtained at the 2.15 m telescope at the Argentinian observatory CASLEO and photometric observations obtained from the ASAS database. We separate the composite spectra into those corresponding to both components. The separated spectra allow us to confirm that the spectral types of both components are similar (dMe3.5) and to obtain precise measurements of the orbital period (P = 1.87844 days), minimum masses (M_1 sin^3 i = 0.35 M_sun and M_2 sin^3 i =0.33 M_sun) and other orbital parameters. The photometric observations exhibit a sinusoidal variation with the same period as the orbital period. We interpret this as signs of active regions carried along with rotation in a tidally synchronized system, and study the evolution of the amplitude of the modulation in longer timescales. Together with the mean magnitude, the modulation exhibits a roughly cyclic variation with a period of around 800 days. This periodicity is also found in the flux of the Ca II K lines of both components, which seem to be in phase. The periodic changes in the three observables are interpreted as a sign of a stellar activity cycle. Both components appear to be in phase, which implies that they are magnetically connected. The measured cycle of approximately 2.2 years (800 days) is consistent with previous determinations of activity cycles in similar stars., Comment: 10 pages, including 11 figures and 3 tables. Abstract

The increasing resistance to anthelmintics has necessitated the exploration of alternative control strategies of gastrointestinal nematode (GIN) infections. A sustainable option is genetic selection based on differences in susceptibility to GIN infection between and within breeds of sheep. Here, three-month-old Canaria Hair breed (GIN-resistant) and Canaria Sheep breed (GIN-susceptible) showed no significant between-breed differences after trickle infection with Teladorsagia circumcincta, whereas considerable individual variability was found in both breeds. Next, data from lambs of both breeds were used to explore the relationships between parasitological variables and T. circumcincta-specific IgA levels, local immune cell populations, and abomasal lymph node gene expression to understand the possible mechanisms underlying resistance. Mucosal IgA levels as well as numbers of globular leukocytes and MHC-II+ cells were associated with protection. Analysis of lymph node gene expression revealed the associations between lower parasite numbers and cumulative fecal egg counts and several immune pathways, such as leukocyte cell adhesion, activation and differentiation of T cells, in particular CD4+ and IL-4 production. The data obtained here may inform on the relationship between phenotypic resistance variability and protective responses at the humoral, cellular, and transcriptomic levels, thus contributing to identifying immune responses in young lambs that could be used as markers for selection. Abstract

Se presentan los resultados de una investigación cualitativa-interpretativa realizada en el sur del estado de Veracruz, que responde a la pregunta ¿cuáles son los procesos mentales que favorecen en la práctica los docentes de sexto grado de primaria para que los alumnos aprendan los conceptos gramaticales y ortográficos del componente de reflexión sobre la lengua y las competencias lingüísticas de la asignatura de español en un contexto sociocultural dado? Los participantes son siete maestras de primaria que trabajaban en seis escuelas diferentes: dos urbanas, dos semiurbanas y dos rurales. El diseño tuvo una duración de dos años, con un carácter descriptivo e interpretativo. Los sujetos fueron alumnos de sexto grado cuyas edades estaban entre los 11 y 14 años. El propósito era sumergirse en la complejidad de los acontecimientos reales del aprendizaje y la enseñanza para indagar sobre la formación de conceptos. Las categorías de análisis encontradas fueron: discurso directo e indirecto, los signos de puntuación, tiempos verbales, errores ortográficos, concordancia, irregularidades en la correspondencia sonoro gráfica de las letras, mayúsculas y minúsculas, la conjunción, acentuación, adjetivos y adverbios. Se usó la técnica de observación no participante y la metodología de análisis por categorización nominal y axial. La perspectiva teórica que sustenta este trabajo es la sociocultural de Vygotsky, Wertsch, Cole, Luria, Leontiev y otros. Los resultados encontrados muestran que el proceso de formación conceptual en los alumnos, en cuanto a gramática y ortografía, es complicado e incompleto. No logran formar conceptos verdaderos, sino solo complejos asociativos, difusos, tipo colección, pseudoconceptos, inicialmente abstractos y potenciales; ellos fueron formando sus propios conceptos con funciones mentales como la observación, la atención, la discriminación y el análisis. No hubo síntesis abstracta, ni conceptualización. Los docentes ignoran cómo se forman los conceptos y predominó en ellos un pensamiento complejo. El modelo pedagógico vigente de competencias incidió en el aprendizaje de los alumnos en cuanto a la no formación de conceptos. Abstract

Eosinophils are prominent effector cells in immune responses against gastrointestinal nematode infections in ruminants, but their in vivo role has been hard to establish in large animals. Interleukin‐5 is a key cytokine in the induction and stimulation of anti‐parasitic eosinophil responses. This study attempted to modulate the eosinophil response in sheep through vaccination with recombinant interleukin‐5 (rIL‐5) and determine the effect on subsequent Haemonchus contortus infection. Nematode‐resistant Canaria Hair Breed (CHB) sheep vaccinated with rIL‐5 in Quil‐A adjuvant, had lower blood eosinophil counts and higher mean worm burdens than control sheep vaccinated with Quil‐A adjuvant alone. In addition, adult worms in IL‐5‐vaccinated sheep were significantly longer with higher eggs in utero in female worms, supporting an active role of eosinophils against adult parasites in CHB sheep. These results confirm that eosinophils can play a direct role in effective control of H contortus infection in sheep and offer a new approach to study immune responses in ruminants.
