Abstract

This letter presents a closed-form integral-equation formulation that models the director tilting in nematic liquid crystals. The proposed formulation is computationally efficient compared to numerical methods and provides a physical insight on the matter. Our previous work is generalized from the one-constant approach to all the possible cases that cover the elastic constants. These constants determine in great extent the electrical properties of the liquid crystal, and subsequently, the response of the reconfigurable devices that take use of it. Therefore, a more precise but still simple modeling of their influence is pursued here. Simulations show good agreement with numerical implementations. In comparison, the error in the estimation is considerably reduced when using the integral-equation formulation, specially as the polarization voltage or the dielectric anisotropy decreases., Comment: IEEE Microwave and Wireless Components Letters

Abstract

In this paper, we study the wave propagation in a metallic parallel-plate structure with glide-symmetric elliptical holes. To perform this study, we derived a mode-matching technique based on the generalized Floquet theorem for glide-symmetric structures. This mode-matching technique benefits from a lower computational cost since it takes advantage of the glide symmetry in the structure. It also provides physical insight on the specific properties of Floquet modes propagating in these specific structures. With our analysis, we demonstrate that glide-symmetric structures with periodic elliptical holes exhibit an anisotropic refractive index over a wide range of frequencies. The equivalent refractive index can be controlled by tuning the dimensions of the holes. Finally, by combining the anisotropy related to the elliptical holes and transformation optics, a Maxwell fish-eye lens with a 33.33% size compression is designed. Abstract

The deep sea, the largest ocean's compartment, drives planetary-scale biogeochemical cycling. Yet, the functional exploration of its microbial communities lags far behind other environments. Here we analyze 58 metagenomes from tropical and subtropical deep oceans to generate the Malaspina Gene Database. Free-living or particle-attached lifestyles drive functional differences in bathypelagic prokaryotic communities, regardless of their biogeography. Ammonia and CO oxidation pathways are enriched in the free-living microbial communities and dissimilatory nitrate reduction to ammonium and H2 oxidation pathways in the particle-attached, while the Calvin Benson-Bassham cycle is the most prevalent inorganic carbon fixation pathway in both size fractions. Reconstruction of the Malaspina Deep Metagenome-Assembled Genomes reveals unique non-cyanobacterial diazotrophic bacteria and chemolithoautotrophic prokaryotes. The widespread potential to grow both autotrophically and heterotrophically suggests that mixotrophy is an ecologically relevant trait in the deep ocean. These results expand our understanding of the functional microbial structure and metabolic capabilities of the largest Earth aquatic ecosystem.

Abstract

This paper presents the design and experimental characterization of a 1 T electromagnet tailored to meet the demands of a Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) system conceived for spatial resolutions at the level of tens of microns. For high image quality, MRI requires an homogeneous magnetic field over the Field of View (FoV) where the sample is imaged. We measure the relative inhomogeneity of the field generated by our magnet to be well below 100 parts per million over a spherical FoV of 20 mm diameter, while strongly constraining fringe field lines to avoid interference with other devices. The magnet performance closely follows our expectations from numerical simulations in all the experimental tests carried out. Additionally, we present the solutions adopted for thermal management and the design of a mechanical structure to distribute the weight and integrate the platform to move the sample in and out of the magnet., Comment: 7 pages, 14 figures

Abstract

Introduction: Peripheral neurofilament light chain (NfL) reflect neuronal and axonal damage. Most studies have been focused on NfL cerebrospinal fluid measures since peripheral levels were difficult to detect. However, with recent advent of single molecule array (SIMOA) technology, NfL is now detectable peripherally at small concentrations (pg/ml). In neurodegenerative disorders, NfL peripheral levels have been found significantly elevated compared against psychiatric disorders. However, there is still controversy of whether NfL peripheral levels might be altered in psychiatric disorders like major depressive disorder (MDD) when compared against a normal population. Methods: We have measured NfL plasma levels by using single molecule array (SIMOA) technology in a Spanish small cohort of MDD patients (n = 15) and a HC group (n = 15). We have used subjective scales to estimate depression severity (HDRS), anhedonia (SAAS), the general cognitive state (MMSE) and episodic memory (FCSRT) in MDD patients. Results: We have not detected a significant alteration in NfL plasma levels in MDD patients when compared against the HC subjects (U = 97, p-value = 0.532). Moreover, we have not detected any significant correlation between NfL plasma levels with any subjective scales. The only parameter that significantly and positively correlated with NfL plasma levels was age in both MDD and HC. Discussion: Significant alteration in NfL plasma levels in MDD patients might reflect neurobiological changes behind the predisposition to develop future neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer's or Parkinson's diseases for which depression represents a risk factor. However, whether there is an increase in NfL due to MDD regardless of the ageing process is still a matter of debate. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
