This work proposes a real-time electricity bill for quantifying the energy used in domestic facilities in Mexico. This bill is a low-cost tool that takes advantage of the IoT technology for generating an easy reading real-time bill allowing the customers to constantly review and administrate their energy consumption. Using low-cost sensors and the electronic board Particle ® Photon, an energy meter is proposed. The presented prototype is extremely compact and satisfies safety measures to be used by anyone in a domestic installation. The measurement data is displayed and processed in real-time, and an appropriate algorithm determines the accumulated kWh. The energy consumed is displayed using an Html interface of easy interpretation for the customers, given recommendations about their consumption habits and some alarms in case of abnormal or high consumption. As a reinforcement measure for avoiding large consumption bills, the system is programmed to send messages to the user, remembering if the estimated consumption is large.

Objective: To study and evaluate the unusual findings in the natural history of parosteal osteosarcomas. Parosteal osteosarcomas are well-differentiated tumours of low grade malignancy, but may dedifferentiate into a more aggressive lesion., Material and Methods: We reviewed 7 parosteal osteosarcomas treated in La Paz Hospital between 2005 and 2009 (3 were dedifferentiated parosteal osteosarcomas). The authors analysed the clinical and radiological features, histology, treatment and outcomes in this patient group., Results: There were 5 men and 2 women, with a mean age of 32.14 years, range 24-47 years. Three of seven tumours (42.8%) were dedifferentiated osteosarcomas. All three patients received chemotherapy. One patient presented with pulmonary metastases. No patient died., Conclusions: It is important to understand that the biological phenomenon of dedifferentiation can occur in parosteal osteosarcomas. Objectives. To determine the validity of clinical and radiological features of enchondroma and low grade chondrosarcoma, and contrast the biopsy results with the clinical diagnosis based on the history and imaging. Material and Method. The study included 96 patients with cartilage type lesions suggestive of an enchondroma (E) or an low grade chondrosarcoma (LGC) according to the clinical and imaging data. The hypotheses were contrasted with the biopsy. Results. Of the 82 patients studied completely, 56 were considered E (68.29%), 8 as LGC (8.33%) and in 18 (18.75%) were doubtful cases and considered as suspected LGC. Of these, the biopsy showed 4 E (25%), 10 LGC (50%) and 4 were not definitive. On the other hand, of the 56 cases diagnosed as E, 15 were biopsied, 5 of these biopsies turned out to be LGC (33.3%). The 8 cases diagnosed as LGC, were also biopsied and only 4 biopsies (50%) confirmed the initial diagnosis. Features analyzed in the study showed no statistically significant difference. Correlation analysis between the diagnosis issued initially and the biopsy result gave a value of 0.69 (kappa coefficient), which was considered a good correlation. Conclusion. Features analyzed did not have any statistical significance. However, there was a good correlation between initial diagnosis and biopsy's result.

Stricter regulations and controls for environmental lead have resulted in significantly lower frequency and reduced severity of chronic and acute lead intoxication. The aim of the present study was to update established reference ranges for lead in whole blood of healthy adults residing in Zaragoza and its region in northeastern Spain. The mean blood level was 2.94 +/- 2.02 microg/dl, with a median of 2.43 microg/dl (n = 156). For women, the mean was 2.29 +/- 1.64 microg/dl (n = 73) and for men 3.51 +/- 2.16 microg/dl (n = 83). The difference between genders is statistically significant (p < 0.005). Our results confirm an ongoing decline in blood lead levels in the studied region, which in 1989 were found to average 13.17 +/- 3.47 microg/dl. In addition, there is a clear need to take into account gender differences when defining normal ranges for lead.

ISO 15189 standard establishes a requirement to periodically revalidate analytical methods for the determination of trace elements like Pb in blood, as conditions change and technical advances are made. The aim of this study was to revalidate an electrothermal atomic absorption spectrometry (ETAAS) method for determination of Pb in blood over the microrange 25-35 microg/dL, on the basis of historical results of interlaboratory comparison programmes. Precision and inaccuracy were estimated by analysis of records of an external quality control programme for Pb (PICC-PbS). The precision and inaccuracy values obtained were both less than 5%, highly satisfactory in view of the validation requirement that precision and inaccuracy be less than 10%. These findings demonstrate the effectiveness of this new validation methodology, which does not require any disruption of the laboratory's routine activity, and which can be used even if the method in question has not been validated previously at that laboratory.

Introduction: Patients with any type of congenital metabolism error are at risk for developing osteoporosis. To gain further insight into the physiopathology of this disease, we studied bone mineral turnover in 10 children with hyperphenylalaninemia, seven with phenylketonuria and six with galactosemia. Oral intake was strictly controlled and the children followed recommendations for physical exercise., Material and Method: Markers of bone resorption (hydroxyproline and pyridinoline in urine samples) and markers of bone formation (levels of osteocalcin and C-terminal procollagen peptide type I) were analyzed. Bone mineral density was analyzed by ultrasound densitometry., Results: A non-significant reduction in bone densitometry with respect to the normal population was observed. Bone mineral turnover was slightly diminished in patients with phenylketonuria but was within the normal range in patients with hyperphenylalaninemia and galactosemia., Conclusion: Adequate control of dietary intake of both proteins and minerals, as well as a healthy lifestyle, can prevent the development of significant alterations in bone mineralization.

Objective: To determine the normal profile of bone turnover markers in childhood in order to enable evaluation of bone mineralization status in the healthy pediatric population and in the population at risk of osteoporosis., Patients and Methods: A population of 75 healthy children aged between 6 months and 14 years was studied. Levels of osteocalcin and C-terminal procollagen peptide type I, as markers of bone apposition, were determined in serum. Levels of hydroxyproline and pyridinoline, as markers of bone resorption, were determined in urine samples. Statistical analysis of the results was performed., Results: The highest levels of the four markers were obtained in the first 4 years of life. Markers of bone resorption showed a continuous statistically significant decrease until the age of 14 years (p < 0.05), whereas markers of bone apposition decreased slightly after the age of 4 years and then remained stable until the age of 14 years., Discussion: These findings are compatible with the presence of intense bone turnover in the first 4 years of life and with a predominance of the phenomenon of bone apposition throughout the first 14 years of life. Knowledge of the normal profile of these markers allows evaluation of bone mineralization status in the healthy pediatric population and in the population at risk of osteoporosis.
