1. Control of light emission of quantum emitters coupled to silicon nanoantenna using cylindrical vector beams

Abstract

Abstract Light emission of europium (Eu3+) ions placed in the vicinity of optically resonant nanoantennas is usually controlled by tailoring the local density of photon states (LDOS). We show that the polarization and shape of the excitation beam can also be used to manipulate light emission, as azimuthally or radially polarized cylindrical vector beam offers to spatially shape the electric and magnetic fields, in addition to the effect of silicon nanorings (Si-NRs) used as nanoantennas. The photoluminescence (PL) mappings of the Eu3+ transitions and the Si phonon mappings are strongly dependent of both the excitation beam and the Si-NR dimensions. The experimental results of Raman scattering and photoluminescence are confirmed by numerical simulations of the near-field intensity in the Si nanoantenna and in the Eu3+-doped film, respectively. The branching ratios obtained from the experimental PL maps also reveal a redistribution of the electric and magnetic emission channels. Our results show that it could be possible to spatially control both electric and magnetic dipolar emission of Eu3+ ions by switching the laser beam polarization, hence the near field at the excitation wavelength, and the electric and magnetic LDOS at the emission wavelength. This paves the way for optimized geometries taking advantage of both excitation and emission processes.

Abstract

Abstract Optical Mie resonators based on silicon nanostructures allow tuning of light-matter-interaction with advanced design concepts based on complementary metal–oxide–semiconductor (CMOS) compatible nanofabrication. Optically active materials such as transition-metal dichalcogenide (TMD) monolayers can be placed in the near-field region of such Mie resonators. Here, we experimentally demonstrate and verify by numerical simulations coupling between a MoSe2 monolayer and the near-field of dielectric nanoresonators. Through a comparison of dark-field (DF) scattering spectroscopy and photoluminescence excitation experiments (PLE), we show that the MoSe2 absorption can be enhanced via the near-field of a nanoresonator. We demonstrate spectral tuning of the absorption via the geometry of individual Mie resonators. We show that we indeed access the optical near-field of the nanoresonators, by measuring a spectral shift between the typical near-field resonances in PLE compared to the far-field resonances in DF scattering. Our results prove that using MoSe2 as an active probe allows accessing the optical near-field above photonic nanostructures, providing complementary information to sophisticated near-field microscopy equipment.

3. Challenges in nanofabrication for efficient optical metasurfaces

Abstract

Abstract Optical metasurfaces have raised immense expectations as cheaper and lighter alternatives to bulk optical components. In recent years, novel components combining multiple optical functions have been proposed pushing further the level of requirement on the manufacturing precision of these objects. In this work, we study in details the influence of the most common fabrication errors on the optical response of a metasurface and quantitatively assess the tolerance to fabrication errors based on extensive numerical simulations. We illustrate these results with the design, fabrication and characterization of a silicon nanoresonator-based metasurface that operates as a beam deflector in the near-infrared range.

Abstract

International audience; Spin–orbit photonic devices usually rely on 2D (transverse) material structuring and are designed for optimal coupling between the polarization state and the spatial degrees of freedom at a given wavelength. Exploiting the third dimension (longitudinal) provides ways to bypass monochromatic limitations. Within a singular optics framework, here we show that chiral liquid crystals endowed with non-singular 3D helix axis orientational distribution exhibit transmissive broadband spin–orbit optical vortex generation as well as an optical diode effect. These results are in stark contrast to the properties of spin–orbit optical elements fabricated from chiral liquid crystals with a uniform orientation of the helix axis, which are reflective devices that process forward and backward propagating waves equally. Moreover, the similarities between the proposed 3D chiral structure and that of the cuticle of some insects invites considering spin–orbit photonics from a biological perspective.

Abstract

Monolayers (MLs) of transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) such as WSe2 and MoSe2 can be placed by dry stamping directly on broadband dielectric resonators, which have the ability to enhance the spontaneous emission rate and brightness of solid-state emitters at room temperature. We show strongly enhanced emission and directivity modifications in room temperature photoluminescence mapping experiments. By varying TMD material (WSe2 versus MoSe2) transferred on silicon nanoresonators with various designs (planarized versus non-planarized), we experimentally separate the different physical mechanisms that govern the global light emission enhancement. For WSe2 and MoSe2 we address the effects of Mie Resonances and strain in the monolayer. For WSe2 an important additional contribution comes from out-of-plane exciton dipoles. Abstract

The realization of geometric phase optical device operating over a broad spectral range is usually confronted with intrinsic limitations depending of the physical process at play. Here we propose to use chiral nematic liquid crystal slabs with helical ordering that varies in three dimensions. Namely, gradient-pitch cholesterics endowed with in-plane space-variant angular positioning of the supramolecular helix. By doing so, we show that the recently introduced Bragg-Berry mirrors [Opt. Lett. {\bf 41}, 3972-3975 (2016)] can be endowed with ultra-broadband spectral range. Experimental demonstration is made in the case of ultra-broadband optical vortex generation in the visible domain. These results offer practical solution to the polychromatic management of the orbital angular momentum of light combining the circular Bragg reflection of chiral media with the Berry phase., Comment: 11 pages, 13 figures

Abstract

Beetles from the genus Chrysina show vivid reflections from bright green to metallic silver-gold as a consequence of the cholesteric liquid crystal organization of chitin molecules. Particularly, the cuticle of Chrysina gloriosa exhibits green and silver stripes. By combining confocal microscopy and spectrophotometry, scanning electron microscopy and numerical simulations, the relationship between the reflectance and the structural parameters for both stripes at the micro- and nanoscales are established. Over the visible and near IR spectra, polygonal cells in tessellated green stripes behave as multiwavelength selective micro-mirrors and the silver stripes as specular broadband mirrors. Thermoregulation, conspecifics or intra-species communication, or camouflage against predators are discussed as possible functions. As a prerequisite to bio-inspired artificial replicas, the physical characteristics of the polygonal texture in Chrysina gloriosa cuticle are compared to their equivalents in synthetic cholesteric oligomers and their fundamental differences are ascertained. It is shown that the cuticle has concave cells whereas the artificial films have convex cells, contrary to expectation and assumption in the literature. The present results may provide inspiration for fabricating multiwavelength selective micromirrors or spatial wavelength-specific light modulators. Statement of Significance Many insects own a tessellated carapace with bumps, pits or indentations. Little is known on the physical properties of these geometric variations and biological functions are unknown or still debated. We show that the polygonal cells in scarab beetle Chrysina gloriosa behave as multiwavelength selective micromirrors over the visible and infrared spectra, with a variety of spatial patterns. In the context of biomimetic materials, we demonstrate that the carapace has concave cells whereas the artificial films have convex cells, contrary to expectation in the literature. Thermoregulation, communication or camouflage are discussed as advanced functions. Results may provide inspiration for fabricating spatial wavelength-specific light modulators and optical packet switching in routing technologies.

Abstract

International audience; In cholesteric liquid-crystalline microlenses, we have studied the role of the microlens size on the focused light intensity and the focal length. We have found that the intensity is maximized by aiming a specific range for the diameter and the thickness of microlenses and that the focal length is adjusted by controlling the diameter and the annealing time of the optical film. Cholesteric microlenses may be used as wavelength-tunable directional light sources in organic soft-matter circuits.

Abstract

International audience; In cholesteric liquid-crystalline gels, the mechanical role of the polymer network over the structure of the whole gel has been ignored. We show that it is the stress gradient exerted by the network over the helical structure that drives the broadening of the optical band gap, as evidenced by the absence of a gradient in chiral species. Model calculations and finite-difference time-domain simulations show that the network acts as a spring with a stiffness gradient. The present results indicate a revision to the common understanding of the physical properties of liquid-crystalline gels is necessary when a concentration gradient in a polymer network is present.

Abstract

International audience; The ability to guide light on the mesoscopic scale is important both scientifically and technologically. Especially relevant is the development of wavelength-tunable light-shaping microdevices. Here we demonstrate the use of cholesteric liquid crystal polygonal textures organized as an array of microlenses for this purpose. The beam shaping is controlled by tuning the wavelength of the incident light in the visible spectrum. By taking advantage of the self-organization property of liquid crystals, the structure of the lens and its optical response are tailored by changing the annealing time of the single layer material during a completely integrated one-step process. The intrinsic helical organization of the layer is the cause of the light shaping and not the shape of the surface as for conventional lenses. A new concept of light manipulation using the structure chirality of liquid crystals is demonstrated, which concerns soft matter photonic circuits to mould the light.

International audience; A universal description of the effects of additive noise on super-and subcritical spatial bifurcations in one-dimensional systems is theoretically, numerically, and experimentally studied. The probability density of the critical spatial mode amplitude is derived. From this generalized Rayleigh distribution we predict the shape of noisy bifurcations by means of the most probable value of the critical mode amplitude. Comparisons with numerical simulations are in quite good agreement for cubic or quintic amplitude equations accounting for stochastic supercritical bifurcation and for cubic-quintic amplitude equation accounting for stochastic subcritical bifurcation. Experimental results obtained in a one-dimensional Kerr-like slice subjected to optical feedback confirm the analytical expression prediction for the supercritical bifurcation shape.

Abstract

International audience; The reflection color of a cholesteric liquid crystal depends on material parameters such as the molecular chirality or the concentration of chiral dopant, the helical pitch of the twisted structure and the optical indices. We show that the color may be selected simply by varying the annealing time of an open cholesteric oligomer film with hybrid anchoring. The 3D representation of the structure is provided by combining complementary imaging techniques. The color selectivity is due to controlled changes of the orientation of the helix axis with respect to the air-material interface. Potential applications are chiral microreflectors and microlenses. Then, we demonstrate the symbiotic association of gold nanoparticles within such cholesteric textures and their long-range self-organized arrangements. We show that the nanoparticles can be patterned on demand only by playing with the film thickness and the interfacial properties of the CLC film. We investigate how the selective reflection is affected by the in situ organization of gold nanoparticles and what is the plasmon response of nanoparticle chains. Potential applications are envisioned in the field of soft nanotechnology and optical materials.

Abstract

International audience; An unpolarized normal-incidence light beam reflected by a cholesteric liquid crystal is left- or right-circularly polarized, in the cholesteric temperature range. In this article, we present a novel approach for fabricating a cholesteric liquid crystalline material that exhibits reflection bands with both senses of polarization at room temperature. A cholesteric liquid crystal that presents a twist inversion at a critical temperature Tc is blended with a small quantity of photopolymerizable monomers. Upon ultraviolet irradiation above Tc, the liquid crystal becomes a polymer-stabilized liquid crystal. Below Tc, the material reflects a dual circularly polarized band in the infrared. By quenching the experimental cell at a temperature below the blend's melting point, the optical properties of the material in an undercooled state are conserved for months at room temperature, which is critical to potential applications such as heat-repelling windows and polarization-independent photonic devices.

International audience; The cholesteric liquid crystalline structure is omnipresent in living matter and concerns many applications in optics because of its property of selective light reflection. The color reflected by this structure depends on material parameters such as the molecular chirality or the concentration of chiral dopant, the helical pitch of the twisted structure and the optical indices. In the present publication, we show that the color may be selected simply by varying the annealing time of a cholesteric oligomer film with hybrid anchoring. Experimental and simulated transmittance spectra reveal the color shift. The three-dimensional representation of the structure is provided from the macroscopic scale to the mesoscale by combining complementary imaging techniques (optical microscopy, transmission and scanning electron microscopies, atomic force microscopy) to image the texture in different directions. We show that the color selectivity is due to controlled changes of the orientation of the helical axis with respect to the air–material interface. The optical behavior is described with a single parameter, which is the angle between the film surface normal and the orientation within the film of the helical axis. Potential applications in the field of chiro-optical devices concern self-assembled chiral microreflectors fabricated via a low-cost controllable thermal process. Additionally, the texture formation provides insight to aid the understanding of the exoskeleton morphogenesis of beetles like Chrysina Gloriosa.

Abstract

International audience; Self-organization processes are present in many different inorganic, organic, and biological systems at various length scales and give rise to specific intrinsic physical properties. In the present work, we demonstrate the symbiotic association of gold nanoparticles within a cholesteric (chiral) liquid crystal, and we report the long-range growth of two-dimensional and three-dimensional self-organized arrangements of gold nanoparticles into various cholesteric textures. The structure of these novel nanomaterials is imaged at various scales—from the macroscopic scale of centimetre-size cells to the nanoscale of self-assemblies—and we demonstrate that the nanoparticle pattern depends strongly on film thickness. Furthermore, we investigate how fundamental optical properties such as selective reflection are affected when cholesteric liquid crystals are doped with gold nanoparticles. Potential applications are envisioned in the field of soft nanotechnology and optical materials.

Abstract

International audience; Translational transverse shifts drastically affect pattern formation in a noisy system with optical feedback. These strong nonlocal interactions may give rise to large domains of convective instability resulting in various types of two-dimensional (2D) noise-sustained structures. These “basic patterns” are investigated and their thresholds and properties are analytically derived. Corresponding 2D experimental patterns are shown to be in complete agreement with theory. Surprisingly enough, some patterns that are purely sustained by noise are found to be nondrifting in contrast with the commonly widespread situation in which convective instabilities lead to traveling patterns.

A universal law for the supercritical bifurcation shape of transverse one-dimensional (1D) systems in presence of additive noise is given. The stochastic Langevin equation of such systems is solved by using a Fokker-Planck equation leading to the expression for the most probable amplitude of the critical mode. This study deals with the emergence of optical patterns in a system with a drift term. This system is the reference system for optical pattern formation, namely Kerr slice medium with a simple feedback mirror. Such a drift is due to a tilted mirror that breaks the reflection symmetry and introduces nonlocal interactions. This study analytically derives expressions for the convective and absolute thresholds for the ideal noiseless and spatially uniform situation. This allows the determination of a suitable range of parameters that have a good separation between the two thresholds, which is compulsory to have a clear experimental evidence of the convective instability domain.

Abstract

This work reports noise-induced effects on the instabilities appearing near the first threshold, i.e. near the transition from the homogeneous to the patterned state. This study also shows that some characteristics (such as the wave number) of the pattern appearing above threshold are anticipated below threshold by precursors.

Abstract

Noisy pattern precursors have been observed experimentally in a Kerr-like slice subjected to one-dimensional (1D) optical feedback. These noise-induced patterns appear below threshold and anticipate the characteristics of the incoming patterns. In our 1D system, precursors are rolls with an undefined spatial phase which wanders erratically and locks spatially when crossing the threshold. Phase localization allows for a criterion to define the threshold in presence of noise. The experimental observations are well reproduced by the standard model of the Kerr slice medium with optical feedback when Langevin noise terms are included.

Abstract

The molecular structure of a cholesteric liquid crystal (CLC) is helical and gives rise to outstanding optical properties like the selective reflection of the light. Cholesteric structure raises fundamental questions such as the relationship between molecular chirality and mesoscopic chirality, and its impact on optical properties. It is omnipresent in biology (organisation of chitin, cellulose, collagen or chromatin). It is also used in technology: cosmetology, super-twisted nematic displays, reflective screens, temperature or pressure sensors, materials for photonic applications in general. The purpose of this work is to describe and understand the interaction of light with different types of non-monotonous helical structures elaborated in this thesis - synthetic cholesteric films (single-component or hybrid i.e. doped with gold nanoparticles) - or in a biological material (Chrysina gloriosa beetle). Several optical characterisation techniques have been used, depending on the sample to study and the questions which are rised. The main part of the manuscript is dedicated to cholesteric microlenses and micro-mirrors. We studied the cholesteric polygonal texture and highlighted that it acts as a chiral microlens array by using confocal microscopy coupled to spectrophotometry. These organic microlenses, developed in a two-step process by self-assembly, have the specificity of being wavelength-selective. We then showed that the polygonal texture of Chrysina gloriosa, as a biological analogous, is an array of spherical micro-mirrors and convergent microlenses. The second part of the manuscript is devoted to the elaboration of hybrid materials composed of CLC and gold nanoparticules and the study of their optical properties. Optical properties of these nanocomposites were probed using various techniques (plasmon resonance, Raman spectroscopy etc).; La structure moléculaire d'un cristal liquide cholestérique (CLC) est hélicoïdale et donne lieu à des propriétés optiques remarquables comme la réflexion sélective de la lumière. La structure cholestérique soulève des questions fondamentales comme la relation entre chiralités moléculaire et mésoscopique, et son impact sur les propriétés optiques. Elle est omniprésente en biologie (organisation de la chitine, de la cellulose, du collagène ou de la chromatine). Elle est aussi utilisée en technologie : en cosmétologie, dans les afficheurs nématiques super-torsadés, les écrans réflecteurs, les capteurs de température ou pression, les matériaux pour les applications photoniques en général. Le but du présent travail est de décrire et comprendre l'interaction de la lumière avec différents types de structures hélicoïdales non-monotones élaborées dans cette thèse - films cholestériques synthétiques (monocomposant ou hybrides i.e. dopés en nanoparticules d'or) - ou dans un matériau biologique (carapace du scarabée Chrysina gloriosa). Différentes techniques de caractérisation optique ont été utilisées suivant le matériau à étudier et les questions posées. La partie principale du manuscrit est dédiée aux microlentilles et micro-miroirs cholestériques. Nous avons étudié la texture polygonale cholestérique et mis en évidence qu'elle se comporte comme un réseau de microlentilles chirales à l'aide de la microscopie confocale couplée à la spectrophotométrie. Ces microlentilles organiques, élaborées en deux étapes par auto-assemblage, ont la particularité d'être sélectives en longueur d'onde. Nous avons ensuite montré que la texture polygonale de la carapace de Chrysina gloriosa, analogue biologique, est un réseau de micro-miroirs sphériques et de microlentilles convergentes. La seconde partie du manuscrit est consacrée à l'élaboration de matériaux hybrides CLC et nanoparticules d'or et à l'étude de leurs propriétés optiques. Les propriétés optiques de ces nanocomposites ont été sondées à l'aide de différentes techniques (résonance plasmon, spectrométrie Raman etc).

Abstract

The enclosed work deals with the study of the topological shaping of light and matter and will bedivided into two categories of research. The first focuses on the topological shaping of light from liquid-crystal based spin-orbit interfaces. In particular, we show in this manuscript, that different systems based on the use of natural topological defects behave as highly efficient natural optical spin-orbit encoders, for distinct topological charges, at the micron scale and with spatial control.The operating wave length and operation mode of such interfaces can be tuned in real-time using low voltage electric fields. This breakthrough opens the path to the ultra-broadband control of the light’sorbital state. The second category concerns the topological shaping of a cholesteric liquid crystal film in context of mass data storage. We show the potential to generate metastable topological mi-crostructures in a controlled and reconfigurable way, both in time and space and with a low energy cost. We also demonstrated a new, unique type of rewritable memory, controlled by the«spin»ofthe laser-generated incident photon; Ce travail de thèse consiste en l’étude de la mise en forme topologique de la lumière et de la matière et s’articule autour de deux axes de recherche. Le premier concerne la mise en forme topologique de la lumière à partir d’interfaces spin-orbite à base de cristaux liquides. En l’occurrence, nous montrons dans ce manuscrit que différents systèmes de défauts topologiques naturels permettent de générer des vortex optiques par interaction spin-orbite de la lumière, de manière efficace, accordable en longueur d’onde et reconfigurable en temps réel et donnant accès à des charges topologiques diverses. Tout ceci nous a permis de travailler à des échelles microscopiques et de manière spatialement contrôlée. Ces avancées ouvrent la voie au contrôle de l’état orbital de la lumière sur une large bande spectrale.Le second axe concerne la mise en forme topologique d’un film de cristal liquide cholestérique dans le cadre du stockage de l’information de nature topologique. Nous avons démontré la possibilité de générer une grande diversité de défauts topologiques métastables, de manière contrôlée et reconfigurable, à la fois dans le temps et dans l’espace. Nous avons développé une approche permettant de réduire drastiquement le coût énergétique d’écriture de ces défauts. Nous avons également montré qu’il était possible d’obtenir un nouveau type de mémoire réinscriptible contrôlé par le degré de liberté «spin» du photon.

Abstract

Today, several beam shaping tools are available, some of them commercially, but most of themare designed for only one working wavelength. This thesis aims to develop several experimentalapproaches for broadband topological beam shaping of light. After the presentation of the state ofthe art, our work focuses on vortex shaping of polychromatic beam exploiting the spin-orbitinteraction of light. Concretely, we report the development of four techniques to modulate the socalledgeometric phase of polychromatic light fields. First, we describe anisotropic reflection frominterfaces that involves at least one uniaxial crystal. We identify a refractive index matchingcriterion enabling highly pure broadband phase control. Then we discuss the use of circularBragg reflection phenomenon inherent to the optics of cholesteric liquid crystals. This propertyallows the selective reflection of circularly polarized light over a bandgap while the reflected fieldacquires a geometric phase. These properties are exploited to design, fabricate and characterizestructured mirrors reflecting Laguerre-Gauss optical modes to a good approximation. The last twosolutions consist of vortex beam shaping using inhomogeneous anisotropic planar opticalelements, namely, topological defects that spontaneously appear in homeotropic nematic liquidcrystal films characterized by negative dielectric anisotropy. The first option is based on using twodefects in series while the other is based of parallel processing using an array of independentlycontrolled topological defects, each of them being dedicated to process distinct spectralchannels. The latter approach can be viewed as a spatial light modulator whose pixels areinhomogeneous and potential applications are proposed in the field of super-resolution opticalimaging and spatio-temporal beam shaping of ultrashort pulses., Aujourd'hui les outils permettant de moduler la phase d'une onde lumineuse sont nombreux etpour certains disponibles commercialement, seulement ces éléments ne fonctionnentgénéralement que pour une seule longueur d'onde de travail simultanément. Nous développonsplusieurs approches expérimentales pour la mise en forme de la phase de faisceaux à largebande spectrales. Après un état de l'art sur les principales techniques, nous focalisons notreétude sur la mise en forme de vortex optiques large-bande par l'intermédiaire d'élémentspermettant de moduler la phase géométrique, dont nous abordons quatre approches. Lapremière est basée sur la réflexion de Fresnel anisotrope sur les dioptres mettant en jeu aumoins un matériau biréfringent uniaxe, un choix optimal de leurs indices de réfraction et de leursdispersions permet de réfléchir un faisceau dont la phase dépend de l'orientation de l'axe optiquedes milieux. Dans la seconde, également réflective, nous exploitons le phénomène de réflexionde Bragg circulaire qui se produit au sein des cristaux liquides cholestériques, dont la particularitéest de réfléchir efficacement toute une bande spectrale avec acquisition d'une phase de naturegéométrique. Nous appliquons cette propriété en particulier pour la conception d'élémentsinhomogènes pour la mise en forme, à une bonne approximation, de modes de Laguerre-Gauss.Les deux dernières approches sont basées sur la mise en forme de vortex optiques par desmilieux biréfringents inhomogènes en transmission, en particulier les défauts se formantspontanément dans les films de cristaux liquides nématiques à anisotropie diélectrique négative.L'une consiste à mettre deux éléments en série permettant de traiter successivement différentescomposantes spectrales. L'autre consiste à paralléliser ce procédé en séparant le faisceau initialen différents canaux spectraux, adressés sur des défauts topologiques localisés en réseau etindividuellement contrôlables électriquement. Cette dernière solution peut être vue comme unmodulateur spatial de lumière dont les pixels sont inhomogènes et nous a amené à proposer desapplications potentielles en imagerie optique super-résolue et pour la mise en forme spatiotemporelled'impulsions ultracourtes.
