Publicly engaged social science can help to maximize research use for program and policy change toward equity. In what follows, we describe The Stories and Numbers Project as an example of publicly engaged research that moves the robust science of supporting LGBTQ+ (and all) students beyond the university and into the public sphere. We provide an overview of LGBTQ+ young people's experiences of their school climate and the science of LGBTQ+‐supportive safe school strategies to contextualize the need for the Project. We discuss the theoretical foundations of the Project, as well as the experiences and resources that made the Project possible. We outline our multi‐pronged strategy for research dissemination to LGBTQ+ students and key nodes of their social networks. Finally, we conclude with the lessons learned from the Stories and Numbers Project, and how they can be leveraged to activate research for social change. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

To date, little is known about psychosocial and behavioral effects of marijuana (MJ) use among youths in substance abuse disorder (SUD) treatment. We recruited 80 youths (Mage= 20.4 ± 3.5 years old) to participate in an aftercare pilot program from SUD treatment programs in Southern California. This article explores differences in psychosocial and behavioral treatment outcomes between youths in SUD treatment for MJ compared to youths in treatment for another primary substance other than MJ (i.e., stimulants, opioids, alcohol). Youths in SUD treatment for MJ reported being less likely to quit, continued MJ use at treatment completion, less substance use severity, less psychosocial distress, and fewer criminal behaviors compared to youths who received treatment for substances other than MJ. There were differences in HIV-risk outcomes in the past year; however, both groups reported risky sexual behavior in the past month at treatment discharge. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

Background and Objectives: We examined youth recovery outcomes at 6- and 9-months post-participation in an aftercare pilot study called Educating and Supporting inQuisitive Youth in Recovery (ESQYIR) that aimed to investigate the utility of a 12-week mobile texting recovery support intervention.Methods: A total of 80 youth [Mage 20.4 (SD = 3.5)] were randomized to a mobile texting aftercare intervention or an aftercare-as-usual control group. Both groups received identical data collection protocols with psychosocial and behavioral assessments occurring at baseline, during the trial (months 1 and 2), at discharge from the trial (month 3), and 3-, 6-, and 9-month post-intervention follow-ups.Results: Mixed modeling showed that youth who participated in the mobile texting aftercare intervention were less likely to test positive for their primary drug compared to youth in the aftercare-as-usual condition during 6- and 9-months follow-ups (p < .01). Additionally, youth in the aftercare intervention reported significantly higher self-efficacy/confidence to abstain during recovery (p < .05) and were more likely to participate in recovery-related behaviors (self-help and goal-directed extracurricular activities; p < .05) than those in aftercare-as-usual at the 6- and 9-month follow-ups.Conclusions: Results suggest that delivering a structured, behavioral-based wellness aftercare intervention using mobile texting can be an effective for sustaining recovery outcomes in youth over time compared to youth who receive aftercare-as-usual.Scientific Significance: This study shows that a mobile-texting aftercare intervention sustained effects at 6- and 9-months post-intervention for young people in substance use recovery. To date, the measurement of recovery in the field of substance abuse is limited. Youth recovery from substance abuse is an important area to consider, given the complexities of such issues. The Recovery Assessment Scale (RAS) has been validated with mental health patient populations; however, its measurement characteristics have not been examined for individuals in substance abuse treatment. The current study explored the factor structure of the RAS with a sample of 80 substance-abusing youth who participated in a pilot aftercare study (Mage20.5,SD = 3.5; 71.3% male). Reliability analysis showed an internal consistency of α = .90 for the entire RAS measure among the youth sample. Results of exploratory factor analysis identified the following four factors: personal determination, skills for recovery, self-control in recovery, and social support/moving beyond recovery among the substance-abusing youth sample. The RAS also demonstrated sound convergent and divergent validity in comparison to other validated measures of functioning, sobriety, and well-being. Abstract: Project ESQYIR (Educating & Supporting Inquisitive Youth in Recovery) is a pilot study examining the feasibility of a 12-week mobile-based aftercare intervention for youth (ages 12 to 24) transitioning out of community-based substance abuse treatment programs. From January 2012 through July 2013, a total of 80 youth were recruited from outpatient and residential treatment programs, geographically dispersed throughout Los Angeles County, California. Results revealed that youth who participated in the texting mobile pilot intervention were significantly less likely to relapse to their primary compared to the aftercare as usual control condition (OR=0.52, p =0.002) over time (from baseline throughout the 12-week aftercare pilot program to a 90-day follow-up). Participants in the texting aftercare pilot program also reported significantly less substance use problem severity (β=−0.46, p =0.03) and were more likely to participate in extracurricular recovery behaviors (β=1.63, p =0.03) compared to participants in the standard aftercare group. Collectively, findings from this pilot aftercare study suggest that mobile texting could provide a feasible way to engage youth in recovery after substance abuse treatment to aid with reducing relapse and promoting lifestyle behavior change. This study examines the utility of several process-of-care performance measures (initiation, engagement, retention, and monitoring of drug use during treatment) as predictors of methamphetamine (MA) use outcomes at 12- and 36-month follow-ups. MA-dependent individuals (n = 871) participated in a randomized, controlled trial of outpatient psychosocial treatment from 1999–2002 and completed 12- and 36-month follow-up interviews. This sample included a treatment-as-usual group (n = 436) and a 16-week Matrix treatment (n = 435) group. Significant associations were observed between select process-of-care measures and MA use outcomes at both follow-ups. While correlational analyses showed an association between MA abstinence at follow-up and enhanced treatment engagement and retention, mixed logistic regression analyses indicated that sustained abstinence from MA during outpatient treatment was the strongest predictor of testing negative for MA use at both follow-ups. Results suggest that monitoring client drug use during treatment may be a useful process-of-care measure with MA-dependent users. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

Objective: To qualitatively explore how treatment-involved youth retrospectively contextualize relapse from substance use. Methods: Fourteen focus groups were conducted with 118 youth (78.3% male; 66.1% Latino) enrolled in participating substance abuse treatment programs (4 young adult and 10 adolescent) throughout Los Angeles County. Transcripts were analyzed for relapse perception themes. Results: Dominant relapse themes include emotional reasons (90%), life stressors (85%), cognitive factors (75%), socialization processes (65%), and environmental issues (55%). Conclusions: Youth perceptions about relapse during treatment should be used to better inform clinical approaches and shape early-intervention recovery agendas for substance-abusing youth. As the number of men and women entering treatment for substance use disorders continues to increase across the country, it becomes vitally important to understand their quality of life (QOL) or perceived health status, in order to inform treatment efforts for improving such outcomes. To date, QOL assessments among methamphetamine (MA) dependent users are limited. This paper examines QOL health status among a sample of 838 treatment seeking MA users at admission. Using regression analysis, predictors of QOL are examined among MA users. Predictors of poor QOL among MA users at treatment admission included being female, white, high school educated or more, married, experiencing psychosocial dysfunction (lifetime trauma, suicide, social conflict), reporting a high frequency of both MA and polydrugs for 15 days or more in the past month, chronicity of MA and polydrug use, injection use, and having co-morbid medical and psychiatric impairment. Employment status was the only factor related to better health status perceptions. This study expands the scope of scholarly examination of MA-dependent users entering treatment, as there has not been a development of coherent profiles of QOL among representative samples of clinical MA-abusing populations to date. Abstract: Prescription and over-the-counter (OTC) drug abuse has become a focal point of public health policy, prevention, and control efforts. Adolescents represent one of the fastest growing segments of the general population abusing prescription and OTC drugs as represented by national surveys. This article reports on treatment admission data to the California addiction public system for prescription and OTC drugs among two age subgroups: adolescents 12–17 years and adults 18 years and older. Of the 6,841 admissions for primary abuse of prescription and OTC drugs in California (during 2006–2007), most adolescent admissions (12–17) were for stimulant prescription and OTC drugs (45.3% and 32.1%, respectively), whereas opioid prescription drugs (88.9%) were most common for adults 18 years and older. Differences in psychosocial, treatment, and substance use characteristics between these two age subgroups are described. Results from this study offer useful treatment admission information about prescription and OTC drug abuse within the California public addiction treatment system. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

This article examines performance data improvement efforts among alcohol and other drug (AOD) county and program stakeholders within California's publicly-funded treatment system. County AOD system administrators from approximately two-thirds of California counties (N = 37) and a random sample of treatment program managers (N = 63) were surveyed about practices and priorities related to using performance data to improve service delivery. Survey results showed that over half (56.8%) of the county administrators reported using performance and/or outcome measures to guide decision-making about the treatment programs with which they contract. Measures of treatment engagement and retention were most frequently reported as high priorities for performance data collection. Treatment providers reported considerable variation with their use of performance measures to improve practices. Overall, findings from this study suggest that many programs and counties are taking steps toward adopting practices of performance measurement and management for treatment improvement, although they still require assistance and support in establishing, collecting, and using performance data. Improving the care for individuals with substance use disorders is a national health policy priority. Like other parts of the health care system, the addiction field is under pressure for higher accountability—more efficient use of treatment resources, the delivery of quality services, and the production of positive client outcomes. Significant public health problems associated with methamphetamine (MA) production and use in the United States have emerged over the past 25 years; however, there has been considerable controversy about the size of the problem. Epidemiological indicators have provided a mixed picture. National surveys of the adult U.S. population and schoolbased populations have consistently been used to support the position that MA use is a relatively minor concern. However, many other data sources, including law-enforcement groups, welfare agencies, substance abuse treatment program admissions, criminal justice agencies, and state/county executives indicate that MA is a very significant public health problem for many communities throughout much of the country. In this article, we describe (a) the historical underpinnings of the MA problem, (b) epidemiological trends in MA use, (c) key subgroups at risk for MA problems, (d) the health and social factors associated with MA use, (e) interventions available for addressing the 1vIA problem, and (f) lessons learned from past efforts addressing the MA problem. Abstract: This study applies a chronic illness framework to evaluate treatment outcomes among individuals dependent on methamphetamine (MA). Using growth curve modeling, health-related quality of life (HRQOL) trajectories of MA-dependent individuals (N = 723) were examined over a 1-year period. Results show greater improvements in mental HRQOL trajectories as a function of treatment completion and continued care, although fairly static trajectories in physical health status. Other factors affecting HRQOL trajectories included gender, psychosocial functioning, drug use severity, and health impairment. Results extend research on treatment evaluations for MA dependence, highlighting the importance of continued service utilization for improved quality of life outcomes. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: We examined human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-related risk behaviors among methamphetamine (MA)-dependent users. Secondary data analysis was performed on data from a large clinical trial: The Methamphetamine Treatment Project (N = 784). All MA-dependent participants were enrolled in an outpatient treatment program, receiving either a standardized psychosocial protocol (Matrix model) or treatment-as-usual. HIV-related risk behavior, including injection and unsafe sexual practices, was assessed using the AIDS Risk Assessment at baseline, treatment discharge, and 6, 12, and 36 months following treatment participation. Results indicated that HIV risk behaviors substantially decreased over time. Treatment factors (retention and completion) and frequency of MA use were both positively associated with increased reduction of HIV risk behaviors. The findings suggested that treatment of MA dependence is promising for reducing behaviors that have been shown to transmit HIV. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Relatively little is known about the impact of drug court treatment programs for methamphetamine (MA) dependence. This article examines treatment performance among a subsample of 287 MA-dependent adults who participated in the Methamphetamine Treatment Project from 1999 to 2001. To gain a preliminary indication of MA users'' response to drug court intervention, we compared a group of 57 MA-dependent participants treated in outpatient treatment within the context of a drug court to a group of comparable MA-dependent individuals treated in outpatient treatment but not supervised by a drug court (n = 230). Analyses reveal that drug court participation was associated with better rates of engagement, retention, completion, and abstinence, compared to outpatient treatment without drug court supervision. Six- and 12-month outcome analyses indicated that participants who were enrolled in drug court intervention used MA significantly less frequently. These findings suggest that drug court supervision coupled with treatment may improve the outcomes of MA-dependent offenders beyond that seen from treatment alone. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Relatively little is known about the clinical treatment response characteristics associated with route of methamphetamine (MA) administration. We examined sociodemographic, drug use, treatment response, as well as psychiatric and medical characteristics associated with route of administration among 974 methamphetamine abusers in outpatient treatment during 1999-2001. Injectors had the poorest treatment prognosis: poorer treatment engagement, greater drug use during treatment, lower treatment completion rates, and more MA use at 12 months post-admission than did smokers and intranasal users. On many treatment response measures, MA smokers were almost as severely impaired as injectors, and in general, intranasal users were least impaired. Psychological and medical impairment, before and after treatment, was also highest among injectors. Abstract: Research on the relationship between illicit drug use and infectious diseases have primarily focused on the major problem of heroin injection and HIV transmission. Over the past decade, however, research have shown that rates of hepatitis C infection among injection drug users have surpassed those of HIV infection. There has been little systematic study on the relationship between hepatitis C virus (HCV) and the role of methamphetamine (MA) use in the transmission of the virus. This study examined the prevalence of hepatitis C infection among a sample of 723 MA-dependent individuals who sought outpatient treatment from 1999 through 2005. Roughly 15% of the total sample and 44% of the injectors were found to be infected with HCV. Controlling for participant characteristics, we found through multiple logistic regression analyses that HCV infection was more associated with injection use, older age, and female sex. Findings suggest a need for targeted education and prevention efforts about hepatitis C among high-risk MA users, including HCV testing coupled with referrals to HCV treatments. Abstract: This study examined participant characteristics and treatment response among substance-abusing adolescents who received outpatient treatment (N = 305, 70.2% adolescent male, 55.3% White, 33.1% Latino, average age of 16 years). Chart reviews were performed on existing intake and discharge assessments between 1999 and 2003 from two Matrix Institute on Addictions treatment clinics. Analyses comparing methamphetamine (meth)-using (n = 90) and non-meth-using (n = 215) adolescents revealed that adolescent females and older youth were more likely to use meth. Meth users reported greater psychosocial dysfunction and higher rates of substance use at treatment discharge compared with non-meth users. Suicidal ideation and substance use during treatment were predictors of early treatment dropout among the total sample. Meth-using adolescents may need enhanced treatment programming, because they appear to present for treatment with higher levels of dysfunction. Implications are discussed in terms of developing strategies that minimize drug use and maximize treatment response among substance-abusing adolescents. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

The influence of mass media on the culture and health-related behaviors of youth has prompted health education and health promotion practitioners and researchers to turn toward media literacy approaches. In this article, development, implementation, and evaluation of a media literacy curriculum for tobacco control for high school students are discussed. Various theories from the field of public health are used to frame practice and research issues. A quasi-experimental research design was used to assess changes in tobacco-related knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors among students exposed to the curriculum. This type of evaluation approach has become de rigueur for assessing school-based curricula in both educational and public health fields. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Methamphetamine (MA) is a major public health and criminal justice problem in much of the Western and Midwestern US, and its use seems to be increasing east of the Mississippi River. MA use can produce significant psychiatric and medical consequences, including psychosis, dependence, overdose, and death. Cognitive behavioral therapy and contingency management are among the most promising approaches for treatment of MA abuse and dependence. A multisite study evaluating the Matrix Model of outpatient treatment will soon be completed to provide data on this manualized approach. An ambitious program of pharmacotherapy development research is currently being sponsored by the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) in geographic areas significantly affected by MA use. The development of treatments for MA-related problems is particularly critical for a number of user groups including MA users who experience persistent psychosis, pregnant women and women with children, gay and bisexual men, and MA users involved in the criminal justice system. In this article the authors discuss the health impact of methamphetamine use (MA) on young people. The authors conclude that young MA users, especially young women, significantly elevated levels of negative mental health symptoms, in which psychosis and depression appear to be the most common health outcomes. They added that MA use has also negative impact on the health of older users that include dental problems, hepatitis and other serious medical complications.

The article discusses the impact on the use of methamphetamine (MA) among young individuals. According to a national survey of 12th graders, there was a downward trend from 4.7% to 2.5% of life-time MA usage from 1999 to 2005 in the U.S. Key information regarding the relation of high-risk sexual behaviors and MA use are also discussed.

Computer code that transfers data to third parties (third-party tracking) is common across the web and is subject to few federal privacy regulations. We determined the presence of potentially privacy- compromising data transfers to third parties on a census of US nonfederal acute care hospital websites, and we used descriptive statistics and regression analyses to determine the hospital characteristics associated with a greater number of third-party data transfers. We found that third-party tracking is present on 98.6 percent of hospital websites, including transfers to large technology companies, social media companies, advertising firms, and data brokers. Hospitals in health systems, hospitals with a medical school affiliation, and hospitals serving more urban patient populations all exposed visitors to higher levels of tracking in adjusted analyses. By including third-party tracking code on their websites, hospitals are facilitating the profiling of their patients by third parties. These practices can lead to dignitary harms, which occur when third parties gain access to sensitive health information that a person would not wish to share. These practices may also lead to increased health-related advertising that targets patients, as well as to legal liability for hospitals. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: There is a broad consensus that addictive behaviors tend to be chronic and relapsing. But for field studies of substance users, successfully tracking, locating, and following up with a representative sample of subjects is a challenge.Methods: The purpose of this paper is to provide a general overview of how current technological aids can support and improve the quality of longitudinal research on substance use disorders. The review is grouped into four domains: (1) tracking and locating, (2) prompting/engaging, (3) incentivizing, and (4) collecting data.Results& Conclusions: Although the technologies described in this review will be modified or replaced over time, our findings suggest that incorporating some or all of these currently available approaches may improve research efficiency, follow-up rates, and data quality. Background This paper reports data from a study designed to determine the impact of an 8-week exercise program on depression and anxiety symptoms among newly abstinent methamphetamine (MA)-dependent individuals in residential treatment. Methods One hundred thirty-five MA-dependent individuals, newly enrolled in residential treatment, were randomly assigned to receive either a 3-times-per-week, 60-minute structured exercise program for 8 weeks (24 sessions) or an equivalent number of health education sessions. Using mixed-modeling repeated-measures regression, we examined changes in weekly total depression and anxiety scores as measured by the Beck Depression Inventory and Beck Anxiety Inventory over the 8-week study period. Results Mean age of participants was 31.7 (SD = 6.9); 70.4% were male and 48% Latino. Analyses indicate a significant effect of exercise on reducing depression (β = − 0.63, P = 0.001) and anxiety (β = − 0.95, P = 0.001) symptoms (total scores) over the 8-week period compared to a health education control group. A significant dose interaction effect between session attendance and exercise was found as well on reducing depression (β = − 0.61, P < 0.001) and anxiety symptoms (β = − 0.22, P = 0.009) over time compared to the control group. Conclusions Results support the role of a structured exercise program as an effective intervention for improving symptoms of depression and anxiety associated with MA abstinence. Aims This study examines the utility of individual drug use and treatment characteristics for predicting in-treatment performance and post-treatment outcomes over a 1-year period. Design, setting and participants Data were collected from 420 adults who participated in the Methamphetamine Treatment Project (MTP), a multi-site study of randomly assigned treatment for methamphetamine dependence. Interviews were conducted at baseline, during treatment and during three follow-up time-points: treatment discharge and at 6 and 12 months following admission. Measurements The Addiction Severity Index (ASI); the Craving, Frequency, Intensity and Duration Estimate (CFIDE); and laboratory urinalysis results were used in the current study. Findings Analyses addressed both in-treatment performance and post-treatment outcomes. The most consistent finding is that pre-treatment methamphetamine use predicts in-treatment performance and post-treatment outcomes. No one variable predicted all in-treatment performance measures; however, gender, route of administration and pre-treatment methamphetamine use were significant predictors. Similarly, post-treatment outcomes were predicted by a range of variables, although pre-treatment methamphetamine use was significantly associated with each post-treatment outcome. Conclusions These findings provide useful empirical information about treatment outcomes for methamphetamine abusers, and highlight the utility of assessing individual and in-treatment characteristics in the development of appropriate treatment plans. Background: We examined the efficacy of an 8-week exercise intervention on posttreatment methamphetamine (MA) use among MA-dependent individuals following residential treatment.Methods: 135 individuals newly enrolled in treatment were randomly assigned to a structured 8-week exercise intervention or health education control group. Approximately 1 week after completion of the intervention, participants were discharged to the community. Interview data and urine samples were collected at 1-, 3-, and 6-months post-residential care. Of the sample, 54.8% were classified as higher severity users (using MA more than 18 days in the month before admission) and 45.2% as lower severity users (using MA for up to 18 days in the month before admission). Group differences in MA use outcomes were examined over the 3 timepoints using mixed-multivariate modeling.Results: While fewer exercise participants returned to MA use compared to education participants at 1-, 3- and 6-months post-discharge, differences were not statistically significant. A significant interaction for self-reported MA use and MA urine drug test results by condition and MA severity was found: lower severity users in the exercise group reported using MA significantly fewer days at the three post-discharge timepoints than lower severity users in the education group. Lower severity users in the exercise group also had a lower percentage of positive urine results at the three timepoints than lower severity users in the education group. These relationships were not present in the comparison of the higher severity conditions.Conclusion: Results support the value of exercise as a treatment component for individuals using MA 18 or fewer days/month. Background and Objectives This paper expands on a study investigating depression outcomes in response to an 8-week exercise intervention among methamphetamine (MA) dependent individuals in early recovery. Methods A total of 135 MA-dependent individuals enrolled in residential treatment were randomly assigned to either a structured exercise intervention or a structured health education control group. Both groups were similar in format: 60-minute sessions, offered three times a week over an 8-week study period. Results Results showed that at the 8-week trial endpoint, participants randomized to the exercise intervention showed significantly greater reduction in depression symptom scores than participants randomized to the health education group, and that participants who attended the greatest number of exercise sessions derived the greatest benefit. This paper further analyzes study data to uncover individual predictors of depression response to exercise and finds that among participants randomized to exercise treatment, individuals with the most severe medical, psychiatric, and addiction disease burden at baseline showed the most significant improvement in depressive symptoms by study endpoint. Conclusions Our findings suggest that exercise in moderate dose is effective at treating depressive symptoms in individuals in early recovery from addiction, and furthermore, that treatment with exercise appears to be particularly beneficial to individuals who suffer from severe medical, psychiatric, and addictive disorders. This study examines the utility of several process-of-care performance measures (initiation, engagement, retention, and monitoring of drug use during treatment) as predictors of methamphetamine (MA) use outcomes at 12- and 36-month follow-ups. MA-dependent individuals (n = 871) participated in a randomized, controlled trial of outpatient psychosocial treatment from 1999-2002 and completed 12- and 36-month follow-up interviews. This sample included a treatment-as-usual group (n = 436) and a 16-week Matrix treatment (n = 435) group. Significant associations were observed between select process-of-care measures and MA use outcomes at both follow-ups. While correlational analyses showed an association between MA abstinence at follow-up and enhanced treatment engagement and retention, mixed logistic regression analyses indicated that sustained abstinence from MA during outpatient treatment was the strongest predictor of testing negative for MA use at both follow-ups. Results suggest that monitoring client drug use during treatment may be a useful process-of-care measure with MA-dependent users. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The adoption of performance-based management has been under consideration by addiction treatment funding agencies, and, recently, many state and county agencies have developed performance-based measurement/management systems in an attempt to improve their treatment system. This article describes one such effort in Los Angeles County, California. The Performance-Based Pilot Project linked treatment encounters (counseling sessions, drug testing, case management, and methadone dosing) with client outcomes (abstinence or reduced drug use at discharge) and longer lengths of stay in treatment. Eleven outpatient counseling programs and three narcotic treatment programs participated in the nine-month project. Results indicated that for both outpatient counseling and narcotic treatment programs, more sessions attended in the first 30 days was associated with better client outcomes and longer lengths of stay. Furthermore, in outpatient counseling programs, more group sessions during the first 30 days predicted abstinence or greater reductions in primary drug use; in narcotic treatment programs, more doses received during the first 30 days was correlated to longer treatment retention. This research implies that increasing the availability of counseling sessions for a client's first 30 days and engaging clients early is a promising area for program efforts to improve treatment outcomes and program performance. Significant public health problems associated with methamphetamine (MA) production and use in the United States have emerged over the past 25 years; however, there has been considerable controversy about the size of the problem. Epidemiological indicators have provided a mixed picture. National surveys of the adult U.S. population and school-based populations have consistently been used to support the position that MA use is a relatively minor concern. However, many other data sources, including law-enforcement groups, welfare agencies, substance abuse treatment program admissions, criminal justice agencies, and state/county executives indicate that MA is a very significant public health problem for many communities throughout much of the country. In this article, we describe (a) the historical underpinnings of the MA problem, (b) epidemiological trends in MA use, (c) key subgroups at risk for MA problems, (d) the health and social factors associated with MA use, (e) interventions available for addressing the MA problem, and (f) lessons learned from past efforts addressing the MA problem.
