We analyze the semiclassical Schwarzschild geometry in the Boulware quantum state in the framework of two-dimensional (2D) dilaton gravity. The classical model is defined by the spherical reduction of Einstein's gravity sourced with conformal scalar fields. The expectation value of the stress-energy tensor in the Boulware state is singular at the classical horizon of the Schwarzschild spacetime, but when backreaction effects are considered, previous results have shown that the 2D geometry is horizonless and described by a non-symmetric wormhole with a curvature singularity on the other side of the throat. In this work we show that reversing the sign of the central charge of the conformal matter removes the curvature singularity of the 2D backreacted geometry, which happens to be horizonless and asymptotically flat. This result is consistent with a similar analysis recently performed for the CGHS model. We also argue the physical significance of negative central charges in conformal anomalies from a four-dimensional perspective.

Here we publish three years of data for the UCNtau experiment performed at the Los Alamos Ultra Cold Neutron Facility at the Los Alamos Neutron Science Center. These data are in addition to our previously published data. Our goals in this paper are to better understand and quantify systematic uncertainties and to improve the lifetime statistical precision. We report a measured value for these runs from 2020-2022 for the neutron lifetime of 877.94+/-0.37 s; when all the data from UCNtau are averaged we report an updated value for the lifetime of 877.82+/-0.22 (statistical)+0.20-0.17 (systematic) s. We utilized improved monitor detectors, reduced our correction due to UCN upscattering on ambient gas, and employed four different main UCN detector geometries both to reduce the correction required for rate dependence and explore potential contributions due to phase space evolution.

The Nab experiment will measure the electron-neutrino correlation and Fierz interference term in free neutron beta decay to test the Standard Model and probe Beyond the Standard Model Physics. Using National Instrument's PXIe-5171 Reconfigurable Oscilloscope module, we have developed a data acquisition system that is not only capable of meeting Nab's specifications, but flexible enough to be adapted in situ as the experimental environment dictates. The L1 and L2 trigger logic can be reconfigured to optimize the system for coincidence event detection at runtime through configuration files and LabVIEW controls. This system is capable of identifying L1 triggers at at least $1$ MHz, while reading out a peak signal rate of approximately $2$ GB/s. During commissioning, the system ran at a sustained readout rate of $400$ MB/s of signal data originating from roughly $6$ kHz L2 triggers, well within the peak performance of the system., Comment: 11 pages, 6 figures

The past two decades have yielded several new measurements and reanalysis of older measurements of the neutron lifetime. These have led to a 4.4 standard deviation discrepancy between the most precise measurements of the neutron decay rate producing protons in cold neutron beams and the most precise lifetime measured in neutron storage experiments. Here we publish an analysis of the recently published UCN aimed a searching for an explanation of this difference using the model proposed by Koch and Hummel.

We analyze the adiabatic regularization scheme to renormalize Proca fields in a four-dimensional Friedmann-Lema\^{i}tre-Robertson-Walker spacetime. The adiabatic method is well established for scalar and spin-$1/2$ fields, but is not yet fully understood for spin-$1$ fields. We give the details of the construction and show that, in the massless limit, the renormalized stress-energy tensor of the Proca field is closely related to that of a minimally coupled scalar field. Our result is in full agreement with other approaches, based on the effective action, which also show a discontinuity in the massless limit. The scalar field can be naturally regarded as a St\"ueckelberg-type field. We also test the consistency of our results in de Sitter space., Comment: 10 pages. Fundamental neutron physics, combining precision measurements and theory, probes particle physics at short range with reach well beyond the highest energies probed by the LHC. Significant US efforts are underway that will probe BSM CP violation with orders of magnitude more sensitivity, provide new data on the Cabibbo anomaly, more precisely measure the neutron lifetime and decay, and explore hadronic parity violation. World-leading results from the US Fundamental Neutron Physics community since the last Long Range Plan, include the world's most precise measurement of the neutron lifetime from UCN$\tau$, the final results on the beta-asymmetry from UCNA and new results on hadronic parity violation from the NPDGamma and n-${^3}$He runs at the FNPB (Fundamental Neutron Physics Beamline), precision measurement of the radiative neutron decay mode and n-${}^4$He at NIST. US leadership and discovery potential are ensured by the development of new high-impact experiments including BL3, Nab, LANL nEDM and nEDM@SNS. On the theory side, the last few years have seen results for the neutron EDM from the QCD $\theta$ term, a factor of two reduction in the uncertainty for inner radiative corrections in beta-decay which impacts CKM unitarity, and progress on {\it ab initio} calculations of nuclear structure for medium-mass and heavy nuclei which can eventually improve the connection between nuclear and nucleon EDMs. In order to maintain this exciting program and capitalize on past investments while also pursuing new ideas and building US leadership in new areas, the Fundamental Neutron Physics community has identified a number of priorities and opportunities for our sub-field covering the time-frame of the last Long Range Plan (LRP) under development. This whitepaper presents the research priorities decided on by attendees of the 2022 Town Meeting for Fundamental Symmetries, Neutrons and Neutrinos, which took place December 13-15, 2022 in Chapel Hill, NC, as part of the Nuclear Science Advisory Committee (NSAC) 2023 Long Range Planning process. A total of 275 scientists registered for the meeting. The whitepaper makes a number of explicit recommendations and justifies them in detail.

The Microchannel X-ray Telescope (MXT) will be the first focusing X-ray telescope based on a "Lobster-Eye" optical design to be flown on Sino-French mission SVOM. SVOM will be dedicated to the study of Gamma-Ray Bursts and more generally time-domain astrophysics. The MXT telescope is a compact (focal length ~ 1.15 m) and light (< 42 kg) instrument, sensitive in the 0.2--10 keV energy range. It is composed of an optical system, based on micro-pore optics (MPOs) of 40 micron pore size, coupled to a low-noise pnCDD X-ray detector. Presently under construction in Lund, Sweden, the European Spallation Source (ESS) will be the world's brightest neutron source. As such, it has the potential for a particle physics program with a unique reach and which is complementary to that available at other facilities. This paper describes proposed particle physics activities for the ESS. The nuclear dependence of the inclusive inelastic electron scattering cross section (the EMC effect) has been measured for the first time in $^{10}$B and $^{11}$B. Previous measurements of the EMC effect in $A \leq 12$ nuclei showed an unexpected nuclear dependence; $^{10}$B and $^{11}$B were measured to explore the EMC effect in this region in more detail. Results are presented for $^9$Be, $^{10}$B, $^{11}$B, and $^{12}$C at an incident beam energy of 10.6~GeV. The EMC effect in the boron isotopes was found to be similar to that for $^9$Be and $^{12}$C, yielding almost no nuclear dependence in the EMC effect in the range $A=4-12$. This represents important, new data supporting the hypothesis that the EMC effect depends primarily on the local nuclear environment due to the cluster structure of these nuclei., Comment: To appear in PRC

An optimal control problem associated to the Keller-Segel with logistic reaction system will be studied in $2D$ domains. The control acts in a bilinear form only in the chemical equation. The existence of optimal control and a necessary optimality system are deduced. The main novelty is that control can be rather singular and the state (cell density $u$ and the chemical concentration $v$) remains only in a weak setting, which is not usual in the literature to solve optimal control problems subject to chemotaxis models (see e.g. Guill\'en-Gonz\'alez et al. An Integral Field Unit (IFU) based on image-slicers has been added to the GREGOR Infrared Spectrograph (GRIS). This upgrade to the instrument makes possible 2D spectropolarimetry in the near-infrared by simultaneously recording the full Stokes profiles of spectral lines (in a given spectral interval) at all the points in the field of view. It provides high-cadence spectropolarimetric observations at the instrument's high spatial resolution and high polarization sensitivity at the GREGOR solar telescope. The IFU is ideal for observing the polarized spectrum of fast-evolving solar features at high spatial and spectral resolutions. The high observing cadence opens the possibility of time-series observations. The analysis of observations to this level of accuracy is essential for understanding the complex dynamics and interactions of solar plasma and magnetic fields. The image slicer of the IFU has eight slices of width 100 micron, covering a total field of view of 6" x 3". It was designed and built within the framework of the European projects SOLARNET and GREST, as a prototype for future instruments of the European Solar Telescope (EST) and was integrated into GRIS. After two commissioning campaigns in 2017 and 2018, the IFU was finally installed at the end of September 2018 and offered to all observers who use the telescope.

Quasi-elastic scattering on $^{12}$C$(e,e'p)$ was measured in Hall C at Jefferson Lab for space-like 4-momentum transfer squared $Q^2$ in the range of 8--14.2\,(GeV/$c$)$^2$ with proton momenta up to 8.3\,GeV/$c$. The experiment was carried out in the upgraded Hall C at Jefferson Lab. It used the existing high momentum spectrometer and the new super high momentum spectrometer to detect the scattered electrons and protons in coincidence. The nuclear transparency was extracted as the ratio of the measured yield to the yield calculated in the plane wave impulse approximation. Additionally, the transparency of the $1s_{1/2}$ and $1p_{3/2}$ shell protons in $^{12}$C was extracted, and the asymmetry of the missing momentum distribution was examined for hints of the quantum chromodynamics prediction of Color Transparency. All of these results were found to be consistent with traditional nuclear physics and inconsistent with the onset of Color Transparency.

The past two decades have yielded several new measurements and reanalyses of older measurements of the neutron lifetime. Measurements using different techniques are important for investigating whether there are unidentified systematic effects in any of the measurements. In this paper we report a new measurement using the Los Alamos asymmetric magneto-gravitational trap where the surviving neutrons are counted external to the trap using the fill and dump method. The new measurement gives a free neutron lifetime of . Although this measurement is not as precise, it is in statistical agreement with previous results using in situ counting in the same apparatus.

We describe a procedure to obtain the plasma parameters from the I-V Langmuir curve by using the Druyvesteyn equation. We propose to include two new parameters, $q$ and $r$, to the usual plasma parameters: plasma potential ($V_p$), floating potential ($V_f$), electron density ($n$), and electron temperature ($T$). These new parameters can be particularly useful to represent non-Maxwellian distributions. The procedure is based on the fit of the I-V Langmuir curve with the $q$-Weibull distribution function, and is motivated by recent works which use the $q$-exponential distribution function derived from Tsallis statistics. We obtain the usual plasma parameters employing three techniques: the numerical differentiation using Savitzky Golay (SG) filters, the $q$-exponential distribution function, and the $q$-Weibull distribution function. We explain the limitations of the $q$-exponential function, where the experimental data $V>V_p$ needs to be trimmed beforehand, and this results in a lower accuracy compared to the numerical differentiation with SG. To overcome this difficulty, the $q$-Weibull function is introduced as a natural generalization to the $q$-exponential distribution, and it has greater flexibility in order to represent the concavity change around $V_p$. We apply this procedure to analyze the measurements corresponding to a nitrogen $N_2$ cold plasma obtained by using a single Langmuir probe located at different heights from the cathode. We show that the $q$ parameter has a very stable numerical value with the height. This work may contribute to clarify some advantages and limitations of the use of non-extensive statistics in plasma diagnostics, but the physical interpretation of the non-extensive parameters in plasma physics remains not fully clarified, and requires further research., Comment: 35 pages, 16 figures, 4 appendixes

This work is devoted to design and study efficient and accurate numerical schemes to approximate a chemo-attraction model with consumption effects, which is a nonlinear parabolic system for two variables; the cell density and the concentration of the chemical signal that the cell feel attracted to. We present several finite element schemes to approximate the system, detailing the main properties of each of them, such as conservation of cells, energy-stability and approximated positivity. Moreover, we carry out several numerical simulations to study the efficiency of each of the schemes and to compare them with others classical schemes.

An unexplained $>4\,\sigma$ discrepancy persists between "beam" and "bottle" measurements of the neutron lifetime. A new model proposed that conversions of neutrons $n$ into mirror neutrons $n'$, part of a dark mirror sector, can increase the apparent neutron lifetime by $1\%$ via a small mass splitting $\Delta{m}$ between $n$ and $n'$ inside the 4.6 T magnetic field of the National Institute of Standards and Technology Beam Lifetime experiment. A search for neutron conversions in a 6.6 T magnetic field was performed at the Spallation Neutron Source which excludes this explanation for the neutron lifetime discrepancy.

Using the one-dimensional potential well with realistic parameters for atomic nuclei, we illustrate the movement of the poles of the S-matrix, and the transmission coefficient when the well supports an anti-bound state. We calculate the phase shift of the atomic nuclei 5He using the three-dimensional potential well, and compare it with the experimental one. In this work we analyse a PDE-ODE problem modelling the evolution of a Glioblastoma, which includes chemotaxis term directed to vasculature. First, we obtain some a priori estimates for the (possible) solutions of the model. In particular, under some conditions on the parameters, we obtain that the system does not develop blow-up at finite time. In addition, we design a fully discrete finite element scheme for the model which preserves some pointwise estimates of the continuous problem. Later, we make an adimensional study in order to reduce the number of parameters. Finally, we detect the main parameters determining different width of the ring formed by proliferative and necrotic cells and different regular/irregular behaviour of the tumor surface., Comment: 25 pages, 20 figures

We report an improved measurement of the free neutron lifetime $\tau_{n}$ using the UCN$\tau$ apparatus at the Los Alamos Neutron Science Center. We counted a total of approximately $38\times10^{6}$ surviving ultracold neutrons (UCN) after storing in UCN$\tau$'s magneto-gravitational trap over two data acquisition campaigns in 2017 and 2018. We extract $\tau_{n}$ from three blinded, independent analyses by both pairing long and short storage-time runs to find a set of replicate $\tau_{n}$ measurements and by performing a global likelihood fit to all data while self-consistently incorporating the $\beta$-decay lifetime. Both techniques achieve consistent results and find a value $\tau_{n}=877.75\pm0.28_{\text{ stat}}+0.22/-0.16_{\text{ syst}}$~s. With this sensitivity, neutron lifetime experiments now directly address the impact of recent refinements in our understanding of the standard model for neutron decay., Comment: 7 pages, 2 figures, 3 tables

The study of high-energy gamma rays from passive Giant Molecular Clouds (GMCs) in our Galaxy is an indirect way to characterize and probe the paradigm of the "sea" of cosmic rays in distant parts of the Galaxy. By using data from the High Altitude Water Cherenkov (HAWC) observatory, we measure the gamma-ray flux above 1 TeV of a set of these clouds to test the paradigm. We selected high-galactic latitude clouds that are in HAWC's field-of-view and which are within 1~kpc distance from the Sun. We find no significant excess emission in the cloud regions, nor when we perform a stacked log-likelihood analysis of GMCs. Using a Bayesian approach, we calculate 95\% credible intervals upper limits of the gamma-ray flux and estimate limits on the cosmic-ray energy density of these regions. These are the first limits to constrain gamma-ray emission in the multi-TeV energy range ($>$1 TeV) using passive high-galactic latitude GMCs. Assuming that the main gamma-ray production mechanism is due to proton-proton interaction, the upper limits are consistent with a cosmic-ray flux and energy density similar to that measured at Earth., Comment: 6 figures, 6 tables

Field measurement campaigns have grown exponentially in recent years, stemming from the need for reliable data to validate urban climate models and obtain a better understanding of urban climate features. Also contributing to this growth is the Local Climate Zone (LCZ) scheme, firstly developed to enhance the accuracy in the contextualisation of urban measurements, and lately used for characterising urban areas. Due to its relative novelty, researchers are still investigating the potential of LCZs and its indicators for urban temperature variability detection. In this respect, the present study introduces the results of an extensive monitoring campaign carried out in the city of Madrid over a two-year period (2016-2018). The aim of this work is to further examine the relationships between LCZs and air temperature differences, with emphasis on their hourly and seasonal evolution. A graphical and statistical analysis to identify temperature variability trends for each LCZ is performed. Results support the existing evidence suggesting a high level of effectiveness in capturing the heat island (UHI) profile of different urban areas, while underperforming when it comes to capturing diurnal temperature variability. The incorporation of indicators that explain the daytime temperature variation phenomenon into the LCZ scheme is therefore recommended, warranting further research., Comment: 7 figures, 8 tables, 1 appendix

In this work we analyse a PDE-ODE problem modelling the evolution of a Glioblastoma, which includes an anisotropic nonlinear diffusion term with a diffusion velocity increasing with respect to vasculature. First, we prove the existence of global in time weak-strong solutions using a regularization technique via an artificial diffusion in the ODE-system and a fixed point argument. In addition, stability results of the critical points are given under some constraints on parameters. Quasielastic $^{12}$C$(e,e'p)$ scattering was measured at space-like 4-momentum transfer squared $Q^2$~=~8, 9.4, 11.4, and 14.2 (GeV/c)$^2$, the highest ever achieved to date. Nuclear transparency for this reaction was extracted by comparing the measured yield to that expected from a plane-wave impulse approximation calculation without any final state interactions. The measured transparency was consistent with no $Q^2$ dependence, up to proton momenta of 8.5~GeV/c, ruling out the quantum chromodynamics effect of color transparency at the measured $Q^2$ scales in exclusive $(e,e'p)$ reactions.
