Abstract

Perennial plants create productive and biodiverse hotspots, known as fertile islands, beneath their canopies. These hotspots largely determine the structure and functioning of drylands worldwide. Despite their ubiquity, the factors controlling fertile islands under conditions of contrasting grazing by livestock, the most prevalent land use in drylands, remain virtually unknown. Here we evaluated the relative importance of grazing pressure and herbivore type, climate and plant functional traits on 24 soil physical and chemical attributes that represent proxies of key ecosystem services related to decomposition, soil fertility, and soil and water conservation. To do this, we conducted a standardized global survey of 288 plots at 88 sites in 25 countries worldwide. We show that aridity and plant traits are the major factors associated with the magnitude of plant effects on fertile islands in grazed drylands worldwide. Grazing pressure had little influence on the capacity of plants to support fertile islands. Taller and wider shrubs and grasses supported stronger island effects. Stable and functional soils tended to be linked to species-rich sites with taller plants. Together, our findings dispel the notion that grazing pressure or herbivore type are linked to the formation or intensification of fertile islands in drylands. Rather, our study suggests that changes in aridity, and processes that alter island identity and therefore plant traits, will have marked effects on how perennial plants support and maintain the functioning of drylands in a more arid and grazed world.

Abstract

Perennial plants create productive and biodiverse hotspots, known as fertile islands, beneath their canopies. These hotspots largely determine the structure and functioning of drylands worldwide. Despite their ubiquity, the factors controlling fertile islands under conditions of contrasting grazing by livestock, the most prevalent land use in drylands, remain virtually unknown. Here we evaluated the relative importance of grazing pressure and herbivore type, climate and plant functional traits on 24 soil physical and chemical attributes that represent proxies of key ecosystem services related to decomposition, soil fertility, and soil and water conservation. To do this, we conducted a standardized global survey of 288 plots at 88 sites in 25 countries worldwide. We show that aridity and plant traits are the major factors associated with the magnitude of plant effects on fertile islands in grazed drylands worldwide. Grazing pressure had little influence on the capacity of plants to support fertile islands. Taller and wider shrubs and grasses supported stronger island effects. Stable and functional soils tended to be linked to species-rich sites with taller plants. Together, our findings dispel the notion that grazing pressure or herbivore type are linked to the formation or intensification of fertile islands in drylands. Rather, our study suggests that changes in aridity, and processes that alter island identity and therefore plant traits, will have marked effects on how perennial plants support and maintain the functioning of drylands in a more arid and grazed world.

Abstract

The aim was to evaluate the seed germination requirements of Phacelia secunda J.F. Gmel. and Eryngium paniculatum Cav. y Dombey ex F. Delaroche, perennial herbaceous colonizers of degraded environments of northwest Argentinian Patagonia and of interest for ecological restoration. The germination percentage, mean germination time and time until initiation of germination of a control (C) and two pre-germination treatments: mechanical scarification with a scalpel (EM) and 45 days cold moist stratification (EHF) were evaluated. In P. secunda, the germination percentage in EHF treatment (2%) was lower than in C (24%) and EM (16%) treatment. In E. paniculatum, differences between C (94%) and EHF (82%) were found, but not between C and EM (91%). EHF treatment accelerated the germination initiation in both species. Seeds of P. secunda showed low germination capacity being necessary to evaluate new treatments. Eryngium paniculatum showed high germination capacity in the control. Thus this species does not require specific pre-germination treatments., El objetivo fue evaluar los requerimientos de germinación de Phacelia secunda J.F. Gmel. y Eryngium paniculatum Cav. y Dombey ex F. Delaroche, herbáceas perennes colonizadoras de ambientes degradados del noroeste patagónico argentino y de interés para la restauración ecológica. Se evaluó el porcentaje, tiempo medio e inicio de germinación en un control (C) y dos tratamientos pre-germinativos: escarificación mecánica con bisturí (EM) y estratificación húmeda fría durante 45 días (EHF). En P. secunda, el porcentaje de germinación en el tratamiento EHF (2%) fue menor que en el C (24%) y el tratamiento EM (16%). En E. paniculatum se encontraron diferencias entre el C (94%) y el tratamiento EHF (82%), pero no entre el C y EM (91%). El tratamiento EHF aceleró el inicio de la geminación en ambas especies. Las semillas de P. secunda mostraron baja capacidad de germinación siendo necesario evaluar nuevos tratamientos. Eryngium paniculatum mostró alta capacidad germinativa aún en el control, lo que evidencia que no requiere tratamientos pre-germinativos específicos.

9. Ecología de la restauración en áreas degradadas por obras viales en el Noroeste Patagónico

Abstract

Las obras de infraestructura de transporte lineal, como las rutas, presentan importantes impactos en los ecosistemas y desafíos a resolver, como la pérdida de cobertura vegetal y suelo, la introducción e invasión de especies exóticas, la modificación de las geoformas, y la alteración del valor estético y paisajístico. En la construcción de rutas y caminos, se generan taludes producto de los movimientos de suelo para nivelar la cota entre la rasante de la obra vial y la topografía natural. En los taludes de desmonte se decapita el terreno, dado que la rasante de la explanación de la ruta se sitúa por debajo de la cota del nivel natural del terreno. Además, estos taludes ponen en riesgo la seguridad de personas y vehículos, ante posibles derrumbes. Por ello es prioritario, desarrollar técnicas de rehabilitación para la revegetación de los taludes, que se fundamenten en datos ecológicos sobre la colonización de la vegetación en estas áreas degradadas y de las áreas de referencia aledañas. Ahondar en la ecología de la restauración en las comunidades que atraviesan los caminos, otorga información para la elaboración de técnicas de rehabilitación específicas, a la vez que permiten mantener la diversidad de ambientes y biodiversidad que estos albergan. El objetivo general fue evaluar aspectos ecológicos que permitan generar conocimiento para la rehabilitación en taludes de desmonte originados por obras viales en el noroeste Patagónico. Esta tesis se llevó a cabo en cinco comunidades: estepa, matorral de Nothofagus antarctica (ñire), bosque de Austrocedrus chilensis (ciprés de la cordillera), bosque de N. dombeyi (coihue), y bosque de N. pumilio (lenga); donde se evaluaron las condiciones físicas del sustrato, composición, abundancia y grupos funcionales de las especies de la vegetación y el banco de semillas de los taludes de desmonte (TD) y áreas de referencia (AR). También se evaluaron los requerimientos pre-germinativos de un grupo de especies nativas para poner a prueba la existencia de mecanismos de dormancia. Finalmente se estudiaron los rasgos eco-morfológicos de las especies nativas, que facilitan la colonización y establecimiento de la vegetación en áreas degradadas. Las características físicas de los sustratos fueron similares en las diferentes comunidades. En los TD la compactación y la cobertura de sustrato desnudo fueron mayores que en las AR, con texturas mayoritariamente franco-arenosas en los TD y areno-francosas en las AR. Respecto a la vegetación, en la estepa se registraron 60 especies, siendo la cobertura de los TD menor que en las AR, predominando en ambos hierbas y gramíneas perennes. En los TD predominaron las especies Rumex acetosella (invasora) y Acaena splendens (nativa). En el banco de semillas (BS) no se observaron diferencias en la composición de especies y en la densidad de semillas entre los TD y las AR. En el matorral se registraron 72 especies, siendo la cobertura de la vegetación en los TD menor que en AR, observándose en los TD alta cobertura de hierbas y gramíneas perennes (nativas: Acaena pinnatifida, Anemone multifida; invasoras: R. acetosella) y arbustos (nativas: Baccharis magellanica, Berberis microphylla). En las AR predominaron las hierbas y gramíneas perennes (nativa: A. pinnatifida, invasora: Agrostis capillaris). El BS de los TD fue menos rico en especies y densidad de semillas que las AR. En el bosque de ciprés se registraron 92 especies. En los TD la cobertura de la vegetación fue menor que en las AR. Las hierbas y gramíneas perennes y arbustos tuvieron la más alta cobertura en los TD y las AR. En los TD las especies predominantes fueron las nativas A. pinnatifida, Baccharis rhomboidalis y la invasora A.capillaris. En las AR las especies predominantes fueron las nativas Vicia nigricans, Carex andina y B. rhomboidalis. En el BS la riqueza de especies y la densidad total de semillas fueron similares entre los TD y las AR. En el bosque de coihue, se registraron 69 especies, siendo la cobertura de la vegetación en los TD menor que en las AR. La cobertura de arbustos fue la más alta en los TD y las AR, predominando en los TD las especies nativas Aristotelia chilensis y Chusquea culeou, mientras que en las AR las nativas Maytenus chubutensis y C. culeou. En el BS la riqueza de especies y la densidad total de semillas fueron similares entre los TD y las AR. En el bosque de lenga, se registraron 56 especies, siendo la cobertura de la vegetación menor en los TD que en las AR. La cobertura de hierbas y gramíneas perennes y arbustos fue menor en los TD que en las AR. En los TD predominaron las nativas Alstroemeria aurea, Berberis serratodentata y B. microphylla; y en las AR las nativas A. aurea y Ribes magellanicum. Con respecto al BS en los TD se encontró una menor riqueza y densidad de semillas que en las AR. Mediante los ensayos de germinación fue posible identificar especies con algún tipo de dormición, ya sea fisiológica o física (ej. A. pinnatifida, A. multifida, Grindelia anethifolia, Phacelia secunda, Haplopappus glutinosus y A. splendens), y otras que no presentaron dormición (Acaena magellanica, Acaena ovalifolia, Baccharis linearis, Eryngium paniculatum y Oenothera odorata). Respecto a los rasgos eco-morfológicos adecuados para la revegetación de TD de las especies nativas colonizadoras, se destacan las especies A. splendens, B. magellanica, B. microphyla y H. glutinosus. Se concluye que los taludes viales de desmonte son áreas con baja cobertura de vegetación, siendo necesario una adecuada rehabilitación que incluya la revegetación de los mismos, con especies propias nativas adaptadas al lugar. Si bien existe un banco de propágulos de especies nativas en los taludes, no siempre el mismo se expresa naturalmente. Es necesario reintroducir especies nativas, y controlar las especies invasoras, priorizando las especies que ya naturalmente colonizan áreas degradadas e ir enriqueciendo con otras nativas presentes en áreas aledañas. Con los resultados obtenidos se realizaron una serie de posibles propuestas de rehabilitación para la implementación de prácticas activas que permitan la revegetación de taludes viales en la región en futuros trabajos. Este trabajo de tesis doctoral, es un aporte a la ecología de la restauración de taludes, resultados que sin duda van a favorecer la toma de decisiones para la rehabilitación de taludes viales del noroeste patagónico The construction of linear transport structures like roadways has a considerable impact on ecosystems and presents many challenges, such as the loss of plant and soil cover, introduction and invasion of exotic species, and modification of geoforms and the aesthetic value of the landscape. When constructing highways and roads, slopes are formed due to the movement of soil to even the level between the roadway and the natural topography. Overlying material is removed from the road slopes, since the surface level of the roadway lies lower than the natural level of the land. These slopes can constitute a hazard, putting people and vehicles at risk through possible landslides. For this reason the development of rehabilitation techniques for revegetation of these slopes is a priority: these techniques should be based on ecological data of plant colonisation of degraded areas and nearby reference areas. Investigation into restoration ecology in the communities that the roads pass through will provide information on specific rehabilitation techniques, and at the same time make it possible to maintain the diversity of environments and the biodiversity they contain. The general objective was to evaluate ecological aspects that could be useful in the rehabilitation of road slopes generated by roadworks in northwest Patagonia. This work was carried out in five communities: steppe, Nothofagus antarctica (ñire) shrubland, Austrocedrus chilensis (ciprés de la cordillera) forest, N. dombeyi (coihue) forest, and N. pumilio (lenga) forest. We assessed the physical conditions of the substrate, and the composition, abundance and functional groups of the plant species and seed banks of the road slopes (RS) and the reference areas (RA). We also evaluated the pregermination requirements of a group of native species to test for the presence of seed dormancy mechanisms. Finally, we studied the eco-morphological traits of native species that facilitate the colonisation and establishment of vegetation in degraded areas. The physical characteristics of the substrates were similar in the different communities. In the RS, soil compaction and the cover of bare soil were greater than in the RA, with mainly sandy-loam texture in the RS and loamy-sand in the RA. With regard to vegetation, 60 species were recorded in the steppe community, the cover in RS being lower than in RA, with perennial herbs and grasses predominating in both areas. In RS the dominant species were Rumex acetosella (invasive) and Acaena splendens (native). In the seedbank (SB) no differences were observed between RS and RA in species composition or seed density. In the ñire shrubland 72 species were recorded, vegetation cover in RS being lower than in RA; in RS we observed a high level of cover of perennial herbs and grasses (native species: Acaena pinnatifida and Anemone multifida; invasive species: R. acetosella) and shrubs (native species: Baccharis magellanica and Berberis microphylla). In RA perennial herbs and grasses predominated (A. pinnatifida and invasive Agrostis capillaris). The SB of RS had lower species richness and seed density than RA. In the ciprés forest 92 species were registered. Plant cover was lower in RS than in RA. Shrubs and perennial herbs and grasses presented the highest cover in both RS and RA. The predominant species in RS were the native A. pinnatifida and Baccharis rhomboidalis, and the invasive A.capillaris, whereas in RA the native Vicia nigricans, Carex andina and B. rhomboidalis predominated. In the SB, species richness and total seed density were similar in RS and RA. In the coihue forest 69 species were recorded, and plant cover in RS was lower than in RA. In both RS and RA, shrubs presented the highest cover. The predominant species in RS were the native Alstroemeria aurea, Berberis serratodentata and B. microphylla, and in RA, the native A. aurea and Ribes magellanicum. The SB of RS presented lower species richness and seed density of than that of RA. Through germination assays we identified species presenting some kind of seed dormancy, whether physiological or physical (e.g., A. pinnatifida, A. multifida, Grindelia anethifolia, Phacelia secunda, Haplopappus glutinosus and A. splendens) and others presenting no dormancy (Acaena magellanica, Acaena ovalifolia, Baccharis linearis, Eryngium paniculatum and Oenothera odorata). With regard to the eco-morphological traits suitable for revegetation of TD of the native colonising plants, the outstanding features were: A. splendens, B. magellanica, B. microphylla and H. glutinosus. We conclude that the road slopes constitute areas of low plant cover and that rehabilitation is therefore necessary, including revegetation of these slopes with native species adapted to the area. Although a bank of propagules of native species does exist on the slopes, they do not always grow naturally. It is necessary to reintroduce native species and control invasive species, giving priority to species that already colonise degraded areas naturally, and gradually enrich the species with other native plants from nearby areas. From these results a series of possible proposals of rehabilitation were drawn up, for the implementation of active practices that could be suitable for the revegetation of road slopes in the region in future works. This doctoral thesis contributes information on the restoration ecology of road slopes, and the results will aid decision-making related to the rehabilitation of road slopes in northwest Patagonia.
