Microbiotas are complex microbial communities that colonize specific niches in the host and provide essential organismal functions that are important in health and disease. Understanding the ability of each distinct community member to promote or impair host health, alone or in the context of the community, is imperative for understanding how differences in community structure affect host health and vice versa. Recently, a reference 12‐member microbiota for the model organism Caenorhabditis elegans, known as CeMbio, was defined. Here, we show the differential ability of each CeMbio bacterial species to activate innate immunity through the conserved PMK‐1/p38 MAPK, ACh‐WNT, and HLH‐30/TFEB pathways. Although distinct CeMbio members differed in their ability to activate the PMK‐1/p38 pathway, the ability to do so did not correlate with bacterial‐induced lifespan reduction in wild‐type or immunodeficient animals. In contrast, most species activated HLH‐30/TFEB and showed virulence toward hlh‐30‐deficient animals. These results suggest that the microbiota of C. elegans is rife with bacteria that can shorten the host's lifespan if host defense is compromised and that HLH‐30/TFEB is a fundamental and key host protective factor. Background: Chromosomal structural rearrangements can lead to fertility problems and recurrent miscarriages. The intricate interplay of genetics during human development can lead to subtle anomalies that may affect reproduction. Case Presentation: A 33-year-old woman sought fertility treatment after experiencing six miscarriages. Products of conception from the final pregnancy loss had been karyotyped, revealing a Robertsonian translocation (RT), involving chromosome 14. Fertility investigations showed low anti-Mullerian hormone (AMH) levels but otherwise normal female characteristics with normal sperm parameters of her husband were observed and both partners having a normal karyotype. Two embryos were transferred in an IVF cycle but neither resulted in a successful pregnancy. Subsequently, preimplantation genetic testing for aneuploidy (PGT-A) was applied to trophectoderm biopsy specimens from 4 embryos, which revealed abnormalities involving chromosome 14. Sperm aneuploidy testing failed to detect any increase in the incidence of aneuploidy affecting chromosome 14. Further embryos genetic testing indicated that all identified chromosome 14 abnormalities in the embryos had a maternal (oocyte) origin. Conclusion: This case underscores challenges in diagnosing and managing germline mosaicism in fertility. A maternal 14;14 Robertsonian translocation, undetected in the patient's blood but impacting oocytes, likely explains recurrent miscarriage and observed embryo aneuploidies. Genetic mosaicism in reproductive medicine highlights the necessity for advanced testing and personalized treatments. ObjectivesThere is intense interest in lung volume reduction surgery (LVRS) for treatment of severe symptomatic emphysema. LVRS results in objective and subjective improvement in lung function in selected patients. However, LVRS is complicated by substantial morbidity, including prolonged pulmonary air leak associated with resection of emphysematous lung tissue. In this study, we investigated the use of a novel implanted silicone elastomer device that reduces lung volume without surgical resection, in a previously reported emphysematous animal model. The purpose of this investigation was to determine the applicability, physiologic effects, complications, and air-leak results of this lung volume reducer (LVR) approach.DesignControlled, randomized, prospective animal study. Emphysema was induced in 20 New Zealand white rabbits with three nebulizations of 10,000 U of porcine elastase. After 6 weeks, the animals were randomized to control sham surgery (n = 10) vs implanted silicone elastomer LVR (n = 10) treatment groups. Lung function, including helium-dilution lung volumes, static respiratory system compliance curves, and diffusion capacity of the lung for carbon monoxide (DLCO), was measured at baseline, following emphysema induction (week 6), and when the animals were killed (1 week after LVR or sham surgery). Histologic evaluation was performed in all lung specimens after fixation.ResultsModerate emphysema developed after elastase nebulization, assessed by lung function and postmortem histology. Functional residual capacity (FRC) and an upward shift of lung compliance curves was observed with development of emphysema at 6 weeks (p < 0.05). Following LVR, FRC decreased (p = 0.005) and compliance curves shifted back downward (p = 0.002), without reduction in DLCO. There was no change in control sham animals. DLCO did not change in either group.ConclusionsIn this short-term, randomized, controlled animal model study, the implantable LVR approach produced safe and effective lung volume reduction without tissue resection in the treated animals. The implant procedure produced minimal morbidity, no mortality, and no observed air-leak complications in the treated animals. Limitations include the short-term follow-up and moderate degree of emphysema in this animal model. Further research is required to assess long-term effects and complications of this method for lung volume reduction.

In this article, the author cites the good outcomes from exposing young people to Paralympic Games. In addition, the author explains how the Paralympic Games brings to the host city many opportunities for young people to experience first-hand the common humanity that lies within every human being. Children are given the opportunity to witness and be inspired with the skill and strength shown by Paralympians. People with special needs can also benefit from experiencing the Paralympics as skills of the Paralympians will be showcased to the public and this will make the public realize that persons with a disability are as capable of stunning accomplishments as are their able-bodied fellow citizens. This collective realization will eventually lead to a more complete integration of all members of society and thus contribute to the fulfillment of the ultimate goal of the Paralympic movement: full participation in society and equality of opportunity for persons with special needs. A brief history of the Paralympic Games is also presented.
