Abstract

We study experimentally and theoretically the dynamics of permanent paramagnetic chains and mixed clusters formed by permanent paramagnetic chains and paramagnetic particles under the influence of a time-varying magnetic field. First, we examine the dynamics of permanent chains at high frequencies (∼50 to 1000 Hz). These permanent chains exhibit continuous rotational motion with a frequency several orders of magnitude lower than that of the magnetic field. We develop a theoretical model that accurately describes the dependence of the rotational dynamics of chains on their length, as well as the amplitude and frequency of the external magnetic field in this high frequency regime. Next, we examine how cluster dynamics are affected by the presence of permanent chains. We show that the rotation of clusters composed of a high proportion of permanent chains is slowed down but remains qualitatively well described by the theoretical model we developed for homogeneous clusters of isotropic particles. We propose that the decrease in angular velocity for mixed clusters is due to the hardening of the cluster's 2D elastic modulus caused by the increase of the steric interaction parameter stemming from the presence of chemical links between particles in the chains. 13. Reciprocal locomotion of dense swimmers in Stokes flow

Abstract

Due to the kinematic reversibility of Stokes flow, a body executing a reciprocal motion (a motion in which the sequence of body configurations remains identical under time reversal) cannot propel itself in a viscous fluid in the limit of negligible inertia; this result is known as Purcell's scallop theorem. In this limit, the Reynolds numbers based on the fluid inertia and on the body inertia are all zero. Previous studies characterized the breakdown of the scallop theorem with fluid inertia. In this paper we show that, even in the absence of fluid inertia, certain dense bodies undergoing reciprocal motion are able to swim. Using Lorentz's reciprocal theorem, we first derive the general differential equations that govern the locomotion kinematics of a dense swimmer. We demonstrate that no reciprocal swimming is possible if the body motion consists only of tangential surface deformation (squirming). We then apply our general formulation to compute the locomotion of four simple swimmers, each with a different spatial asymmetry, that perform normal surface deformations. We show that the resulting swimming speeds (or rotation rates) scale as the first power of a properly defined "swimmer Reynolds number'', demonstrating thereby a continuous breakdown of the scallop theorem with body inertia.

Abstract

We study experimentally and theoretically the dynamics of two-dimensional self-assembled binary clusters of paramagnetic colloids of two different sizes and magnetic susceptibilities under a time-varying magnetic field. Due to the continuous energy input by the rotating field, these clusters are at a state of dissipative nonequilibrium. Dissipative viscoelastic shear waves traveling around their interface enable the rotation of isotropic binary clusters. The angular velocity of a binary cluster is much slower than that of the magnetic field; it increases with the concentration of big particles, and it saturates at a concentration threshold. We generalize an earlier theoretical model to successfully account for the observed effect of cluster composition on cluster rotation. We also investigate the evolution of the internal distribution of the two particle types, reminiscent of segregation in a drop of two immiscible liquids, and the effect of this internal structure on rotation dynamics. The binary clusters exhibit short-range order, which rapidly vanishes at a larger scale, consistent with the clusters' viscoelastic liquid behavior. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Self-assembled nanotubesexhibit impressive biologicalfunctionsthat have always inspired supramolecular scientists in their effortsto develop strategies to build such structures from small moleculesthrough a bottom-up approach. One of these strategies employs moleculesendowed with self-recognizing motifs at the edges, which can undergoeither cyclization-stacking or folding-polymerizationprocesses that lead to tubular architectures. Which of these self-assemblypathways is ultimately selected by these molecules is, however, oftendifficult to predict and even to evaluate experimentally. We showhere a unique example of two structurally related molecules substitutedwith complementary nucleobases at the edges (i.e., G:C and A:U) for which the supramolecular pathway takenis determined by chelate cooperativity, that is, by their propensityto assemble in specific cyclic structures through Watson-Crickpairing. Arte y emprendimiento: por nuevas formas de aprender es una compilación de reflexiones de la comunidad de la Universidad del Rosario, que explora la conexión entre el arte y el emprendimiento como estrategia pedagógica innovadora. La obra refleja un enfoque educativo que va más allá de la transferencia de conocimientos y, en cambio, transforma aulas en laboratorios de experimentación. La iniciativa “El arte de emprender” busca desarrollar personalidades emprendedoras, al combinar habilidades creativas y ejecutivas, promover una comprensión integral del entorno y fomentar proyectos emprendedores innovadores. Destaca la importancia de las emociones en el emprendimiento y presenta testimonios de profesores, estudiantes y emprendedores que han encontrado su propósito mediante la combinación de estos dos saberes. Así, este libro se constituye en una valiosa contribución al campo educativo, al mostrar cómo el arte y el emprendimiento son capaces de potenciar la creatividad y el pensamiento crítico de los estudiantes, marcando un hito en la transformación educativa de la Universidad del Rosario y promoviendo metodologías innovadoras en el futuro.

Publisher Copyright: © 2022 American Chemical Society We study the fusion of homogeneous cell aggregates and of hybrid aggregates combining cells and microparticles. In all cases, we find that the contact area does not vary linearly over time, as observed for liquid drops, but rather it follows a power law in t2/3. This result is interpreted by generalizing the fusion model of soft viscoelastic solid balls to viscoelastic liquid balls, akin to jelly pearls. We also explore the asymmetric fusion between a homogeneous aggregate and a hybrid aggregate. This latter experiment allows the determination of the self-diffusion coefficient of the cells in a tissue by following the spatial distribution of internalized particles in the cells.

Abstract

We report an experimental and theoretical study of the single-molecule conductance of two separate families of regioisomeric phthalocyanine derivatives in which the binding groups are connected at opposite or at contiguous positions about the phthalocyanine moiety. We observe that compounds with the longest distance between the anchoring groups yield molecular junctions with a higher conductance compared to those with a shorter distance. We performed both density functional theory (DFT) and tight binding calculations to understand how interference effects explain the experimental results including the role of constructive and destructive quantum interference in five phthalocyanine derivatives.

¿Se reflexiona verdaderamente sobre cómo contribuir con la formación del ser humano en las propuestas educativas? Abstract

Metabolic studies and animal knockout models point to the critical role of polyunsaturated docosahexaenoic acid (22:6, DHA)-containing phospholipids (DHA-PLs) in physiology. Here, we investigated the impact of DHA-PLs on the dynamics of transendothelial cell macroapertures (TEMs) triggered by RhoA inhibition-associated cell spreading. Lipidomic analyses showed that human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) subjected to a DHA diet undergo a 6-fold enrichment in DHA-PLs at the plasma membrane (PM) at the expense of monounsaturated oleic acid-containing PLs (OA-PLs). Consequently, DHA-PL enrichment at the PM induces a reduction in cell thickness and shifts cellular membranes towards a permissive mode of membrane fusion for transcellular tunnel initiation. We provide evidence that a global homeostatic control of membrane tension and cell cortex rigidity minimizes overall changes of TEM area through a decrease of TEM size and lifetime. Conversely, low DHA-PL levels at the PM lead to the opening of unstable and wider TEMs. Together, this provides evidence that variations of DHA-PL levels in membranes affect cell biomechanical properties. Abstract

Summary: Both cross-presentation of antigens by dendritic cells, a key pathway triggering T cell immunity and immune tolerance, and survival of several pathogens residing in intracellular vacuoles are intimately linked to delayed maturation of vesicles containing internalized antigens and microbes. However, how early endosome or phagosome identity is maintained is incompletely understood. We show that Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) and Fc receptor ligation induces interaction of the GTPase Rab14 with the kinesin KIF16b mediating plus-end-directed microtubule transport of endosomes. As a result, Rab14 recruitment to phagosomes delays their maturation and killing of an internalized pathogen. Enhancing anterograde transport by overexpressing Rab14, promoting the GTP-bound Rab14 state, or inhibiting retrograde transport upregulates cross-presentation. Conversely, reducing Rab14 expression, destabilizing Rab14 endosomes, and inhibiting anterograde microtubule transport by Kif16b knockdown compromise cross-presentation. Therefore, regulation of early endosome trafficking by innate immune signals is a critical parameter in cross-presentation by dendritic cells. : Weimershaus et al. identify a molecular complex that controls the intracellular trafficking along microtubules of antigens internalized by dendritic cells. They show that this trafficking is regulated by innate immune signals and regulates presentation of internalized antigens to T lymphocytes. Abstract

Transendothelial cell macroaperture (TEM) tunnels control endothelium barrier function and are triggered by several toxins from pathogenic bacteria that provoke vascular leakage. Cellular dewetting theory predicted that a line tension of uncharacterized origin works at TEM boundaries to limit their widening. Here, by conducting high-resolution microscopy approaches we unveil the presence of an actomyosin cable encircling TEMs. We develop a theoretical cellular dewetting framework to interpret TEM physical parameters that are quantitatively determined by laser ablation experiments. This establishes the critical role of ezrin and non-muscle myosin II (NMII) in the progressive implementation of line tension. Mechanistically, fluorescence-recovery-after-photobleaching experiments point for the upstream role of ezrin in stabilizing actin filaments at the edges of TEMs, thereby favouring their crosslinking by NMIIa. Collectively, our findings ascribe to ezrin and NMIIa a critical function of enhancing line tension at the cell boundary surrounding the TEMs by promoting the formation of an actomyosin ring., Holes in endothelial barriers, called transendothelial cell macroapertures (TEMs), are predicted to be limited by line tension of unknown origin. Here the authors identify an actomyosin cable encircling TEMs and establish a role for ezrin in stabilising F-actin bundles, allowing their crosslinking by non-muscle myosin IIa.
