Abstract

The W. M. Keck Observatory Archive (KOA) has released the Observers Data Access Portal (ODAP), a web-application that delivers astronomical data from the W. M. Keck Observatory to the scheduled program's principal investigator and their collaborators anywhere in the world in near real-time. Data files and their associated metadata are streamed to a user's desktop machine moments after they are written to disk and archived in KOA. The ODAP User Interface is built in React and uses the WebSocket protocol to stream data between KOA and the user. Abstract

Advanced experiments using THz pump and X-ray probe pulses at modern free-electron lasers (FELs) like the European X-ray FEL require a frequency-tunable, high-power, narrow-band THz source maintaining the repetition rate and pulse structure of the X-ray pulses. This paper reports the first results from a THz source, that is based on a single-pass high-gain THz FEL operating with a central wavelength of 100 micrometers. The THz FEL prototype is currently in operation at the Photo Injector Test facility at DESY in Zeuthen (PITZ) and uses the same type of electron source as the European XFEL photo injector. A self-amplified spontaneous emission (SASE) FEL was envisioned as the main mechanism for generating the THz pulses. Although the THz FEL at PITZ is supposed to use the same mechanism as at X-ray facilities, it cannot be considered as a simple scaling of the radiation wavelength because there is a large difference in the number of electrons per radiation wavelength, which is five orders of magnitude higher for the THz case. The bunching factor arising from the electron beam current profile contributes strongly to the initial spontaneous emission starting the FEL process. Proof-of-principle experiments were done at PITZ using an LCLS-I undulator to generate the first high-power, high-repetition-rate single-pass THz FEL radiation. Electron bunches with a beam energy of ~17 MeV and a bunch charge of up to several nC are used to generate THz pulses with a pulse energy of several tens of microjoules. For example, for an electron beam with a charge of ~2.4 nC, more than 100 microjoules were generated at a central wavelength of 100 micrometers. The narrowband spectrum was also demonstrated by spectral measurements. Abstract

For all active instruments, the Keck Observatory Archive (KOA) now ingests raw data from the Keck Telescopes within 1 minute of acquisition, quick-look reduced data within 5 minutes of creation, and science ready reduced data for four instruments as they are created by their automated pipelines. On August 1, 2023, KOA released the Observers Data Access Portal (ODAP), which enables observers at the telescope and their collaborators anywhere in the world to securely monitor and download science, calibration, and quick-look data as they are ingested into the archive. The portal is built using Python Socket IO.WebSockets that ensure metadata appear in the portal as the data themselves are ingested. The portal itself is a dynamic web interface built with React. It enables users to view and customize metadata fields, filter metadata according to data type, and download data as they are ingested or in bulk through wget scripts. 6. A Study of the Efficiency of Spatial Indexing Methods Applied to Large Astronomical Databases

Abstract

We report the results of a study to compare the performance of two common database indexing methods, HTM and HEALPix, on Solaris and Windows database servers installed with PostgreSQL, and a Windows Server installed with MS SQL Server. The indexing was applied to the 2MASS All-Sky Catalog and to the Hubble Source Catalog, which approximate the diversity of catalogs common in astronomy. On each server, the study compared indexing performance by submitting 1 million queries at each index level with random sky positions and random cone search radius, which was computed on a logarithmic scale between 1 arcsec and 1 degree, and measuring the time to complete the query and write the output. These simulated queries, intended to model realistic use patterns, were run in a uniform way on many combinations of indexing method and indexing depth. The query times in all simulations are strongly I/O-bound and are linear with number of records returned for large numbers of sources. There are, however, considerable differences between simulations, which reveal that hardware I/O throughput is a more important factor in managing the performance of a DBMS than the choice of indexing scheme. The choice of index itself is relatively unimportant: for comparable index levels, the performance is consistent within the scatter of the timings. At small index levels (large cells; e.g. level 4; cell size 3.7 deg), there is large scatter in the timings because of wide variations in the number of sources found in the cells. At larger index levels, performance improves and scatter decreases, but the improvement at level 8 (14 arcmin) and higher is masked to some extent in the timing scatter caused by the range of query sizes. At very high levels (20; 0.0004 arsec), the granularity of the cells becomes so high that a large number of extraneous empty cells begin to degrade performance., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures. Abstract

Self-modulation of an electron beam in a plasma has been observed. The propagation of a long (several plasma wavelengths) electron bunch in an overdense plasma resulted in the production of multiple bunches via the self-modulation instability. Using a combination of a radio-frequency deflector and a dipole spectrometer, the time and energy structure of the self-modulated beam was measured. The longitudinal phase space measurement showed the modulation of a long electron bunch into three bunches with an approximately 200  keV/c amplitude momentum modulation. Demonstrating this effect is a breakthrough for proton-driven plasma accelerator schemes aiming to utilize the same physical effect.

9. The Application of the Montage Image Mosaic Engine To The Visualization Of Astronomical Images

Abstract

The Montage Image Mosaic Engine was designed as a scalable toolkit, written in C for performance and portability across *nix platforms, that assembles FITS images into mosaics. The code is freely available and has been widely used in the astronomy and IT communities for research, product generation and for developing next-generation cyber-infrastructure. Recently, it has begun to finding applicability in the field of visualization. This has come about because the toolkit design allows easy integration into scalable systems that process data for subsequent visualization in a browser or client. And it includes a visualization tool suitable for automation and for integration into Python: mViewer creates, with a single command, complex multi-color images overlaid with coordinate displays, labels, and observation footprints, and includes an adaptive image histogram equalization method that preserves the structure of a stretched image over its dynamic range. The Montage toolkit contains functionality originally developed to support the creation and management of mosaics but which also offers value to visualization: a background rectification algorithm that reveals the faint structure in an image; and tools for creating cutout and down-sampled versions of large images. Version 5 of Montage offers support for visualizing data written in HEALPix sky-tessellation scheme, and functionality for processing and organizing images to comply with the TOAST sky-tessellation scheme required for consumption by the World Wide Telescope (WWT). Abstract

The scientific computing landscape has evolved dramatically in the past few years, with new schemes for organizing and storing data that reflect the growth in size and complexity of astronomical data sets. In response to this changing landscape, we are, over the next two years, deploying the next generation of the Montage toolkit ([ascl:1010.036]). The first release (October 2015) supports multi-dimensional data sets ("data cubes"), and insertion of XMP/AVM tags that allows images to "drop-in" to the WWT. The same release offers a beta-version of web-based interactive visualization of images; this includes wrappers for visualization in Python. Abstract

This paper discusses the behavior of electron bunch charge produced in an L-band normal conducting radio frequency cavity (RF gun) from Cs2Te photocathodes illuminated with ps-long UV laser pulses when the laser transverse distribution consists of a flat-top core with Gaussian-like decaying halo. The produced charge shows a linear dependence at low laser pulse energies as expected in the quantum efficiency limited emission regime, while its dependence on laser pulse energy is observed to be much weaker for higher values, due to space charge limited emission. However, direct plug-in of experimental parameters into the space charge tracking code ASTRA yields lower output charge in the space charge limited regime compared to measured values. The rate of increase of the produced charge at high laser pulse energies close to the space charge limited emission regime seems to be proportional to the amount of halo present in the radial laser profile since the charge from the core has saturated already. By utilizing core + halo particle distributions based on measured radial laser profiles, ASTRA simulations and semi-analytical emission models reproduce the behavior of the measured charge for a wide range of RF gun and laser operational parameters within the measurement uncertainties., Comment: 15 pages, 16 figures, 2 tables

Abstract

Warsaw Breakage Syndrome (WABS) is a rare autosomal recessive cohesinopathy characterized by growth retardation and congenital anomalies. This report aims to highlight the prenatal diagnosis of WABS through ultrasound findings and genetic testing. We report a case of prenatal diagnosis of WABS in a 24‐week gestation fetus exhibiting microcephaly, delayed sulcation, short corpus callosum, cerebellar vermis hypoplasia and intrahepatic portal‐systemic shunts. The couple had a history of a prior pregnancy termination due to severe intrauterine growth restriction and cerebral malformations. Whole exome sequencing revealed compound heterozygous pathogenic variants [NM_030653.4:c.1403dupT, p.(Ser469Valfs*32) and c.1672C>T, p.(Arg558*)] in the DDX11 gene, consistent with WABS. The same pathogenic variants were identified in the prior terminated fetus upon subsequent analysis. Postmortem examination of the proband confirmed the prenatal ultrasound findings. This case expands the understanding of the prenatal phenotypic spectrum of WABS by identifying specific cerebral and extracerebral anomalies associated with pathogenic variants in the DDX11 gene. Incorporating advanced genetic diagnostics like whole exome sequencing into prenatal care provides valuable information for genetic counseling and management of rare genetic disorders. Abstract

We describe the contents and functionality of the NASA Exoplanet Archive, a database and tool set funded by NASA to support astronomers in the exoplanet community. The current content of the database includes interactive tables containing properties of all published exoplanets, Kepler planet candidates, threshold-crossing events, data validation reports and target stellar parameters, light curves from the Kepler and CoRoT missions and from several ground-based surveys, and spectra and radial velocity measurements from the literature. Tools provided to work with these data include a transit ephemeris predictor, both for single planets and for observing locations, light curve viewing and normalization utilities, and a periodogram and phased light curve service. Abstract

As part of the NASA-CNES agreement, the NASA Star and Exoplanet Database (NStED) serves as the official US portal for the public CoRoT data products. NStED is a general purpose archive with the aim of providing support for NASA's planet finding and characterization goals. Consequently, the NASA Exoplanet Science Institute (NExScI) developed, and NStED adapted, a periodogram service for CoRoT data to determine periods of variability phenomena and create phased photometric light curves. Through the NStED periodogram interface, the user may choose three different period detection algorithms to use on any photometric time series product, or even upload and analyze their own data. 20. Educare and Educere: Is a Balance Possible in the Educational System?

Abstract

Craft (1984) noted that there are two different Latin roots of the English word "education." They are "educare," which means to train or to mold, and "educere," meaning to lead out. While the two meanings are quite different, they are both represented in the word "education." Thus, there is an etymological basis for many of the vociferous debates about education today. The opposing sides often use the same word to denote two very different concepts. One side uses education to mean the preservation and passing down of knowledge and the shaping of youths in the image of their parents. The other side sees education as preparing a new generation for the changes that are to come--readying them to create solutions to problems yet unknown. One calls for rote memorization and becoming good workers. The other requires questioning, thinking, and creating. To further complicate matters, some groups expect schooling to fulfill both functions, but allow only those activities promoting educare to be used. Balance in educational aims is a valid focus for educators. This author contends that, in order to achieve balance, educators must start by changing the organizational structure or the ways in which decisions are made. Utilizing stakeholder perceptions in determining aims, establishing a shared vision of education, and facilitating a change in educators' roles are initial steps. To accomplish a change in thinking, educators must examine their own personal mastery and mental models of education.

We describe here the main functionalities of the LAEX (Laboratorio de Astrofisica Estelar y Exoplanetas/Laboratory for Stellar Astrophysics and Exoplanets) and NASA portals for CoRoT Public Data. The CoRoT archive at LAEX was opened to the community in January 2009 and is managed in the framework of the Spanish Virtual Observatory. 30. Educational Leadership Preparation for School Improvement.

Abstract

This paper describes the design and implementation of a graduate program delivery model in educational leadership with a curriculum collaboratively developed by a university and a high school. The goal of the program was to build faculty capacity at the high school by designing and implementing a graduate program around the school improvement plan. Collaboration was necessary at each step, from conducting needs assessment, to enrolling students, to designing the work each semester. Implemented during spring 1998, the program has a cohort of high school staff members enrolled in graduate study at the master's and specialist levels in three majors, one of which is educational leadership. The program is delivered on the participating school's campus. Only graduate students employed at the participating school are enrolled in the program. This paper describes the concept and program goals, collaborative agreements for responsibility, support from the university and the school, and the model developed for enhancing and sustaining faculty capacity for school improvement. The paper also describes the supporting research, needs assessment results, graduate curriculum development and implementation, lessons learned for higher education, evaluation plan, and proposed actions for dissemination. Though there were barriers to program success, leadership from the university and the school prevailed in securing a graduate program on the high school campus. (Contains 8 references.) (SM)

Abstract

We report the first detection of a planetary-mass companion to a star using the High Resolution Spectrograph (HRS) of the Hobby-Eberly Telescope (HET). The HET-HRS now gives routine radial velocity precision of 2-3 m/s for high SNR observations of quiescent stars. The planetary-mass companion to the metal-rich K0V star HD37605 has an orbital period of 54.23 days, an orbital eccentricity of 0.737, and a minimum mass of 2.84 Jupiter masses. The queue-scheduled operation of the Hobby-Eberly Telescope enabled us to discovery of this relatively short-period planet with a total observation time span of just two orbital periods. The ability of queue-scheduled large-aperture telescopes to respond quickly to interesting and important results demonstrates the power of this new approach in searching for extra-solar planets as well as in other ares of research requiring rapid response time critical observations., Comment: 4 Pages, 2 figures. Abstract

Astronomy is entering a new era as multiple, large area, digital sky surveys are in production. The resulting datasets are truly remarkable in their own right; however, a revolutionary step arises in the aggregation of complimentary multi-wavelength surveys (i.e., the cross-identification of a billion sources). The federation of these large datasets is already underway, and is producing a major paradigm shift as Astronomy has suddenly become an immensely data-rich field. This new paradigm will enable quantitatively and qualitatively new science, from statistical studies of our Galaxy and the large-scale structure in the universe, to discoveries of rare, unusual, or even completely new types of astronomical objects and phenomena. Federating and then exploring these large datasets, however, is an extremely challenging task. The Digital Sky project was initiated with this task in mind and is working to develop the techniques and technologies necessary to solve the problems inherent in federating these large databases, as well as the mining of the resultant aggregate data., Comment: 8 pages, 3 Figures, uses newpasp.sty (included). 41. Immune responses following DNA vaccination with plasmids encoding antigens of Bordetalla pertussis

Abstract

The experiments described in this study showed that DNA vaccines encoding protective antigens of B. pertussis elicit strong immune responses. Plasmids encoding different B. pertussis antigens were constructed, and their immunogenicity tested in different strains of inbred mice. Th1 and Th2 type immune responses could be elicited to plasmids encoding bacterial adhesins. These responses were highly dependent on the vaccination regime. Responses to adenylate cyclase toxin were also obtained. Delivery of a DNA vaccine via the respiratory tract did not elicit detectable systemic immune responses, whereas a native protein delivered by the same route, particularly in the presence of an immunostimulatory oligodeoxynucleotide, was highly immunogenic. To determine whether immune responses to a pertussis antigen following DNA and protein immunisation could be modulated by local cytokine expression, plasmids encoding cytokines were administered with the immunogen. The effect of differential intracellular antigen trafficking on the immune response was determined by constructing translational fusions between adhesins and a secretory leader sequence. The potency of DNA vaccination compared favourably with the protective dose of a whole cell pertussis reference vaccine, and with an acellular vaccine licensed for use in humans. This work has demonstrated that DNA vaccination can indeed be used to elicit immune responses against various antigens of B. pertussis, and indicates how DNA vaccination is now set to become a powerful tool in the further analysis of the functional significance of responses to defined and novel antigens in relation to protection against infection, and the pathogenesis of the disease.

Abstract

Individuals with minor ischaemic stroke and intracranial occlusion are at increased risk of poor outcomes. Intravenous thrombolysis with tenecteplase might improve outcomes in this population. We aimed to test the superiority of intravenous tenecteplase over non-thrombolytic standard of care in patients with minor ischaemic stroke and intracranial occlusion or focal perfusion abnormality.
