Climate change is predicted to alter the distributions of tropical tuna stocks in the Pacific Ocean. Recent modelling projects significant future shifts in tuna biomass from west to east, and from national jurisdictions to high seas areas. As the distributions of these stocks change, the relevant regional fisheries management organisations (RFMOs)—the Western and Central Pacific Fisheries Commission (WCPFC) and the Inter-American Tropical Tuna Commission (IATTC)—will need to develop an expanded framework for cooperation and collaboration to fulfil their conservation and management responsibilities under international law. The key elements of a possible expanded framework for cooperation can be developed, and fundamental areas for collaboration identified, by applying and adapting principles established in the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, the United Nations Fish Stocks Agreement, and the constituent instruments of the RFMOs themselves. Our analysis reveals a wide range of important issues requiring cooperation, and three clear priorities. First, a formal mechanism for cooperation is needed to enable effective and efficient decision-making and action by the two RFMOs on key issues. Second, further cooperation is required in scientific research and modelling to better understand the biology and distributions of Pacific tuna stocks and how they will respond to climate change, and to inform stock assessments and harvest strategies. Third, the RFMOs must cooperate to define appropriate limits on fishing for each stock in a way that ensures they are compatible across the two organisations, taking into account their different members and management regimes.

Objective Constant observation is used in hospitals with people with dementia to manage their safety. However, opportunities for proactive care are not consistently recognised or utilised. A systematic review of constant observation was conducted to understand measures of effectiveness and facilitators for person-centred approaches. Method Electronic databases were searched between 2010 – 2022. Four reviewers completed screening, quality assessments and data extraction with 20% checked for consistency. Findings were presented through narrative synthesis (PROSPERO registration CRD42020221078). Findings Twenty-four studies were included. Non-registered staff without specific training were the main providers of constant observation. Assessments and processes clarifying the level of observation encouraged reviews that linked initiation and discontinuation to a patient’s changing needs. Examples of person-centred care, derived from studies of volunteers or staff employed to provide activities, demonstrated meaningful engagement could reassure a person and improve their mood. Proactive approaches that anticipated distress were thought to reduce behaviours that carried a risk of harm but supporting evidence was lacking. Conclusion Non-registered staff are limited by organisational efforts to reduce risk, leading to a focus on containment. Trained staff who are supported during constant observation can connect with patients, provide comfort and potentially reduce behaviours that carry a risk of harm.

With emerging resistance to frontline treatments, it is vital that new antimalarial drugs are identified to target Plasmodium falciparum. We have recently described a compound, MMV020291, as a specific inhibitor of red blood cell (RBC) invasion, and have generated analogues with improved potency. Here, we generated resistance to MMV020291 and performed whole genome sequencing of 3 MMV020291-resistant populations. This revealed 3 nonsynonymous single nucleotide polymorphisms in 2 genes; 2 in profilin (N154Y, K124N) and a third one in actin-1 (M356L). Using CRISPR-Cas9, we engineered these mutations into wild-type parasites, which rendered them resistant to MMV020291. We demonstrate that MMV020291 reduces actin polymerisation that is required by the merozoite stage parasites to invade RBCs. Additionally, the series inhibits the actin-1-dependent process of apicoplast segregation, leading to a delayed death phenotype. In vitro cosedimentation experiments using recombinant P. falciparum proteins indicate that potent MMV020291 analogues disrupt the formation of filamentous actin in the presence of profilin. Altogether, this study identifies the first compound series interfering with the actin-1/profilin interaction in P. falciparum and paves the way for future antimalarial development against the highly dynamic process of actin polymerisation.

Purpose The purpose of the article is to compare and contrast about higher education and research among public relations and journalism students from the middle-class and working-class origin. The paper applied Bourdieu’s theory of habitus to analyse prejudices against working-class, explores whether working-class students express an anti-education view and whether the appreciation of education (and research in particular) is a predominantly middle-class attitude. Design/methodology/approach Focus groups and an online questionnaire were used to obtain views of students at new university in Northern England. Triple coding (open, axial, selective) was used and the data was then analysed and presented using thematic analysis. Findings Findings show that early socialisation about education as well as students’ type of neighbourhoods (habitus) influence studies views of higher education and research in particular. Whilst the findings show some similarity with views in the literature of middle-class being more inclined to value education, these findings show that this is true only for those who grow up in middle-class areas whereas middle-class students who grew up in working-class area show working-class attitudes of education. Equally, working-class students who grew up in middle-class areas show what is usually perceived as a middle-class view of education. Both groups of students show a tendency towards embracing a consumerist view of higher education. Originality There is a dearth of class-based research in higher education. Moreover, in the broad field of communication there is also little research globally analysing the impact of class-based differences on attitudes about approaches to research and theory-informed learning in higher education.

Background: Little is known about how the workforce influences quality in long term care facilities for older people. Staff numbers are important but do not fully explain this relationship.Objectives: To develop theoretical explanations for the relationship between long-term care facility staffing and quality of care as experienced by residents. Design: A realist evidence synthesis to understand staff behaviours that promote quality of care for older people living in long-term care facilities. Setting: Long-term residential care facilitiesParticipants: Long-term care facility staff, residents, and relatives Methods: The realist review, (i) was co-developed with stakeholders to determine initial programme the-ories, (ii) systematically searched the evidence to test and develop theoretical propositions, and (iii) vali-dated and refined emergent theory with stakeholder groups.Results: 66 research papers were included in the review. Three key findings explain the relationship be-tween staffing and quality: (i) quality is influenced by staff behaviours; (ii) behaviours are contingent on relationships nurtured by long-term care facility environment and culture; and (iii) leadership has an im-portant influence on how organisational resources (sufficient staff effectively deployed, with the knowl-edge, expertise and skills required to meet residents' needs) are used to generate and sustain quality-promoting relationships. Six theoretical propositions explain these findings.Conclusion: Leaders (at all levels) through their role-modelling behaviours can use organisational re-sources to endorse and encourage relationships (at all levels) between staff, residents, co-workers and family (relationship centred care) that constitute learning opportunities for staff, and encourage quality as experienced by residents and families.Crown Copyright (c) 2021 Published by Elsevier Ltd. Background Urinary incontinence is prevalent in nursing and residential care homes, and has a profound impact on residents’ dignity and quality of life. Treatment options are limited in these care contexts and care homes predominantly use absorbent pads to contain incontinence, rather than actively treat it. Transcutaneous posterior tibial nerve stimulation is a non-invasive, safe, low-cost intervention that is effective in reducing urinary incontinence in adults. Objective To determine the clinical effectiveness of transcutaneous posterior tibial nerve stimulation to treat urinary incontinence in care home residents and to determine the associated costs of the treatment. Design A multicentre, pragmatic, participant and outcome assessor-blind, randomised placebo-controlled trial. Setting A total of 37 UK residential and nursing care homes. Participants Care home residents with at least weekly urinary incontinence that is contained using absorbent pads and who are able to use a toilet/toilet aid with or without assistance. Interventions Residents were randomised (1 : 1) to receive 12 30-minute sessions of transcutaneous posterior tibial nerve stimulation or sham stimulation over a 6-week period. Main outcome measures Primary outcome – change in volume of urine leaked over a 24-hour period at 6 weeks. Secondary outcomes – number of pads used, Perception of Bladder Condition, toileting skills, quality of life and resource use. Results A total of 408 residents were randomised (transcutaneous posterior tibial nerve stimulation, n = 197; sham stimulation, n = 209); two exclusions occurred post randomisation. Primary outcome data were available for 345 (85%) residents (transcutaneous posterior tibial nerve stimulation, n = 167; sham stimulation, n = 178). Adherence to the intervention protocol was as follows: 78% of the transcutaneous posterior tibial nerve stimulation group and 71% of the sham group received the correct stimulation.
