Collisionless shocks are fundamental processes that are ubiquitous in space plasma physics throughout the Heliosphere and most astrophysical environments. Earth's bow shock and interplanetary shocks at 1 AU offer the most readily accessible opportunities to advance our understanding of the nature of collisionless shocks via fully-instrumented, in situ observations. One major outstanding question pertains to the energy budget of collisionless shocks, particularly how exactly collisionless shocks convert incident kinetic bulk flow energy into thermalization (heating), suprathermal particle acceleration, and a variety of plasma waves, including nonlinear structures. Furthermore, it remains unknown how those energy conversion processes change for different shock orientations (e.g., quasi-parallel vs. quasi-perpendicular) and driving conditions (upstream Alfv\'enic and fast Mach numbers, plasma beta, etc.). Required to address these questions are multipoint observations enabling direct measurement of the necessary plasmas, energetic particles, and electric and magnetic fields and waves, all simultaneously from upstream, downstream, and at the shock transition layer with observatory separations at ion to magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) scales. Collisionless shock waves are one of the main forms of energy conversion in space plasmas. They can directly or indirectly drive other universal plasma processes such as magnetic reconnection, turbulence, particle acceleration and wave phenomena. Collisionless shocks employ a myriad of kinetic plasma mechanisms to convert the kinetic energy of supersonic flows in space to other forms of energy (e.g., thermal plasma, energetic particles, or Poynting flux) in order for the flow to pass an immovable obstacle. The partitioning of energy downstream of collisionless shocks is not well understood, nor are the processes which perform energy conversion. While we, as the heliophysics community, have collected an abundance of observations of the terrestrial bow shock, instrument and mission-level limitations have made it impossible to quantify this partition, to establish the physics within the shock layer responsible for it, and to understand its dependence on upstream conditions. Context. The first studies with Parker Solar Probe (PSP) data have made significant progress toward the understanding of the fundamental properties of ion cyclotron waves in the inner heliosphere. The survey mode particle measurements of PSP, however, did not make it possible to measure the coupling between electromagnetic fields and particles on the time scale of the wave periods. Aims. We present a novel approach to study wave-particle energy exchange with PSP. Methods. We use the Flux Angle operation mode of the Solar Probe Cup in conjunction with the electric field measurements and present a case study when the Flux Angle mode measured the direct interaction of the proton velocity distribution with an ion cyclotron wave. Results. Our results suggest that the energy transfer from fields to particles on the timescale of a cyclotron period is equal to approximately 3-6% of the electromagnetic energy flux. This rate is consistent with the hypothesis that the ion cyclotron wave was locally generated in the solar wind., Comment: Accepted in Astronomy and Astrophysics

Analysis of model fit results of 15,210 electron velocity distribution functions (VDFs), observed within $\pm$2 hours of 52 interplanetary (IP) shocks by the Wind spacecraft near 1 AU, is presented as the third and final part on electron VDFs near IP shocks. The core electrons and protons dominate in the magnitude and change in the partial-to-total thermal pressure ratio, with the core electrons often gaining as much or more than the protons. Only a moderate positive correlation is observed between the electron temperature and the kinetic energy change across the shock, while weaker, if any, correlations were found with any other macroscopic shock parameter. No VDF parameter correlated with the shock normal angle. The electron VDF evolves from a narrowly peaked core with flaring suprathermal tails in the upstream to either a slightly hotter core with steeper tails or much hotter flattop core with even steeper tails downstream of the weaker and strongest shocks, respectively. Both quasi-static and fluctuating fields are examined as possible mechanisms modifying the VDF but neither is sufficient alone. For instance, flattop VDFs can be generated by nonlinear ion acoustic wave stochastic acceleration (i.e., inelastic collisions) while other work suggested they result from the combination of quasi-static and fluctuating fields. NASA's Parker Solar Probe (PSP) mission is currently investigating the local plasma environment of the inner-heliosphere ($< $0.25$R_\odot$) using both {\em{in-situ}} and remote sensing instrumentation. Connecting signatures of microphysical particle heating and acceleration processes to macro-scale heliospheric structure requires sensitive measurements of electromagnetic fields over a large range of physical scales. The FIELDS instrument, which provides PSP with {\em{in-situ}} measurements of electromagnetic fields of the inner heliosphere and corona, includes a set of three vector magnetometers: two fluxgate magnetometers (MAGs), and a single inductively coupled search-coil magnetometer (SCM). Together, the three FIELDS magnetometers enable measurements of the local magnetic field with a bandwidth ranging from DC to 1 MHz. This manuscript reports on the development of a merged data set combining SCM and MAG (SCaM) measurements, enabling the highest fidelity data product with an optimal signal to noise ratio. On-ground characterization tests of complex instrumental responses and noise floors are discussed as well as application to the in-flight calibration of FIELDS data. The algorithm used on PSP/FIELDS to merge waveform observations from multiple sensors with optimal signal to noise characteristics is presented. In-flight analysis of calibrations and merging algorithm performance demonstrates a timing accuracy to well within the survey rate sample period of $\sim340 \mu s$.

Data from the first two orbits of the Sun by Parker Solar Probe reveal that the solar wind sunward of 50 solar radii is replete with plasma waves and instabilities. One of the most prominent plasma wave power enhancements in this region appears near the electron cyclotron frequency (f_ce). Most of this wave power is concentrated in electric field fluctuations near 0.7 f_ce and f_ce, with strong harmonics of both frequencies extending above f_ce. At least two distinct, often concurrent, wave modes are observed, preliminarily identified as electrostatic whistler-mode waves and electron Bernstein waves. Wave intervals range in duration from a few seconds to hours. Both the amplitudes and number of detections of these near-f_ce waves increase significantly with decreasing distance to the Sun, suggesting that they play an important role in the evolution of electron populations in the near-Sun solar wind. Correlations are found between the detection of these waves and properties of solar wind electron populations, including electron core drift, implying that these waves play a role in regulating the heat flux carried by solar wind electrons. Observation of these near-f_ce waves is found to be strongly correlated with near-radial solar wind magnetic field configurations with low levels of magnetic turbulence. A scenario for the growth of these waves is presented which implies that regions of low-turbulence near-radial magnetic field are a prominent feature of solar wind structure near the Sun.

A statistical analysis of 15,210 electron velocity distribution function (VDF) fits, observed within $\pm$2 hours of 52 interplanetary (IP) shocks by the $Wind$ spacecraft near 1 AU, is presented. This is the second in a three-part series on electron VDFs near IP shocks. The electron velocity moment statistics for the dense, low energy core, tenuous, hot halo, and field-aligned beam/strahl are a statistically significant list of values illustrated with both histograms and tabular lists for reference and baselines in future work. The beam/strahl fit results in the upstream are currently the closest thing to a proper parameterization of the beam/strahl electron velocity moments in the ambient solar wind. This work will also serve as a 1 AU baseline and reference for missions like $Parker \ Solar \ Probe$ and $Solar \ Orbiter$. The median density, temperature, beta, and temperature anisotropy values for the core(halo)[beam/strahl] components, with subscripts $ec$($eh$)[$eb$], of all fit results respectively are $n{\scriptstyle_{ec(h)[b]}}$ $\sim$ 11.3(0.36)[0.17] $cm^{-3}$, $T{\scriptstyle_{ec(h)[b], tot}}$ $\sim$ 14.6(48.4)[40.2] $eV$, $\beta{\scriptstyle_{ec(h)[b], tot}}$ $\sim$ 0.93(0.11)[0.05], and $\mathcal{A}{\scriptstyle_{ec(h)[b]}}$ $\sim$ 0.98(1.03)[0.93]. Analysis of 15314 electron velocity distribution functions (VDFs) within $\pm$2 hours of 52 interplanetary (IP) shocks observed by the \emph{Wind} spacecraft near 1 AU are introduced. The electron VDFs are fit to the sum of three model functions for the cold dense core, hot tenuous halo, and field-aligned beam/strahl component. The best results were found by modeling the core as either a bi-kappa or a symmetric (or asymmetric) bi-self-similar velocity distribution function, while both the halo and beam/strahl components were best fit to bi-kappa velocity distribution function. This is the first statistical study to show that the core electron distribution is better fit to a self-similar velocity distribution function than a bi-Maxwellian under all conditions. The self-similar distribution deviation from a Maxwellian is a measure of inelasticity in particle scattering from waves and/or turbulence. The range of values defined by the lower and upper quartiles for the kappa exponents are $\kappa{\scriptstyle_{ec}}$ $\sim$ 5.40--10.2 for the core, $\kappa{\scriptstyle_{eh}}$ $\sim$ 3.58--5.34 for the halo, and $\kappa{\scriptstyle_{eb}}$ $\sim$ 3.40--5.16 for the beam/strahl. The lower-to-upper quartile range of symmetric bi-self-similar core exponents are $s{\scriptstyle_{ec}}$ $\sim$ 2.00--2.04, and asymmetric bi-self-similar core exponents are $p{\scriptstyle_{ec}}$ $\sim$ 2.20--4.00 for the parallel exponent, and $q{\scriptstyle_{ec}}$ $\sim$ 2.00--2.46 for the perpendicular exponent. The Magnetospheric Multiscale (MMS) mission has observed electron whistler waves at the center and at the edges of magnetic holes in the dayside magnetosheath. The magnetic holes are nonlinear mirror structures since their magnitude is anti-correlated with particle density. In this article, we examine the growth mechanisms of these whistler waves and their interaction with the host magnetic hole. In the observations, as magnetic holes develop and get deeper, an electron population gets trapped and develops a temperature anisotropy favorable for whistler waves to be generated. In addition, the decrease in magnetic field magnitude and the increase in density reduces the electron resonance energy, which promotes the electron cyclotron resonance. To investigate this process, we used an expanding box particle-in-cell simulations to produce the mirror instability, which then evolves into magnetic holes. The simulation shows that whistler waves can be generated at the center and edges of magnetic holes, which reproduces the primary features of the MMS observations. The simulation shows that the electron temperature anisotropy develops in the center of the magnetic hole once the mirror instability reaches its nonlinear stage of evolution. The plasma is then unstable to whistler waves at the minimum of the magnetic field structures. In the saturation regime of mirror instability, when magnetic holes are developed, the electron temperature anisotropy appears at the edges of the holes and electron distributions become more isotropic at the magnetic field minimum. At the edges, the expansion of magnetic holes decelerates the electrons which leads to temperature anisotropies., Comment: 13 pages, 6 figures

We present recent high time resolution observations from an oblique (43 deg) shock crossing from the Magnetospheric Multiscale mission. Short-duration bursts between 10 and 100 ms of ion acoustic waves are observed in this event alongside a persistent reflected ion population. High time resolution (150 ms) particle measurements show strongly varying ion distributions between successive measurements, implying that they are bursty and impulsive by nature. Such signatures are consistent with ion bursts that are impulsively reflected at various points within the shock. We find that, after instability analysis using a Fried-Conte dispersion solver, the insertion of dispersive ion bursts into an already stable ion distribution can lead to wave growth in the ion acoustic mode for short durations of time. We find that impulsively reflected ions are a plausible mechanism for ion acoustic wave growth in the terrestrial bow shock and, furthermore, suggest that wave growth can lead to a small but measurable momentum exchange between the solar wind ions and the reflected population.

High-resolution particle and wave measurements taken during an oblique bow shock crossing by the Magnetospheric Multiscale (MMS) mission are analyzed. Two regions of differing magnetic behavior are identified within the shock, one with active magnetic fluctuations and one with laminar interplanetary magnetic field topology. A prominent reflected ion population is observed in both regions. The active magnetic region is characterized by large-amplitude (>100 mV/m) electrostatic solitary waves, electron Bernstein waves, and ion acoustic waves, along with intermittent current activity and localized electron heating. In the region of laminar magnetic field, ion acoustic waves are prominently observed. Solar wind ion deceleration is observed in both regions of active and laminar magnetic field. All observations suggest that solar wind deceleration can occur as a result of multiple independent processes, in this case current and ion-ion instabilities.

Small-scale magnetic holes (MHs), local depletions in magnetic field strength, have been observed multiple times in the Earths magnetosphere in the bursty bulk flow (BBF) braking region. This particular subset of MHs has observed scale sizes perpendicular to the background magnetic field (B) less than the ambient ion Larmor radius (p(sib i)). Previous observations by Time History of Events and Macroscale Interactions during Substorms (THEMIS) indicate that this subset of MHs can be supported by a current driven by the E x B drift of electrons. Ions do not participate in the E x B drift due to the small-scale size of the electric field. While in the BBF braking region, during its commissioning phase, the Magnetospheric Multiscale (MMS) spacecraft observed a small-scale MH. The electric field observations taken during this event suggest the presence of electron currents perpendicular to the magnetic field. These observations also suggest that these currents can evolve to smaller spatial scales.

Magnetic holes are ubiquitous in space plasmas, occurring in the solar wind, downstream of planetary bow shocks, and inside the magnetosphere. Recently, kinetic-scale magnetic holes have been observed near Earth's central plasma sheet. The Fast Plasma Investigation on NASA's Magnetospheric Multiscale (MMS) mission enables measurement of both ions and electrons with 2 orders of magnitude increased temporal resolution over previous magnetospheric instruments. Here we present data from MMS taken in Earth's nightside plasma sheet and use high-resolution particle and magnetometer data to characterize the structure of a subproton-scale magnetic hole. Electrons with gyroradii above the thermal gyroradius but below the current layer thickness carry a current sufficient to account for a 10-20 depression in magnetic field magnitude. These observations suggest that the size and magnetic depth of kinetic-scale magnetic holes is strongly dependent on the background plasma conditions.
