We study domain walls (DWs) arising in field theories where $Z_2$-symmetry is spontaneously broken by a scalar expectation value decreasing proportionally to the Universe temperature. The energy density of such melting DWs redshifts sufficiently fast not to overclose the Universe. For the first time, evolution of melting DWs and the resulting gravitational waves (GWs) is investigated numerically using lattice simulations. We show that formation of closed melting DWs during radiation domination is much more efficient compared to the scenario with constant tension DWs. This suggests that it can be the main mechanism responsible for reaching the scaling regime similarly to the case of cosmic strings. However, the scaling behaviour of melting DWs is observed, provided only that the initial scalar field fluctuations are not very large. Otherwise, simulations reveal violation of the scaling law, potentially of the non-physical origin. The spectrum of GWs emitted by melting DWs is also significantly different from that of constant tension DWs. Whether the system has reached scaling or not, the numerical study reveals a GW spectrum described in the infrared by the spectral index $n \approx 1.6$ followed by the causality tail. We attribute the difference from the value $n=2$ predicted in our previous studies to a finite lifetime of the DW network. Notably, the updated index is still in excellent agreement with the recent findings by pulsar timing arrays, which confirms that melting DWs can be responsible for the observed (GW) signal. We report an extensive high-field study of atacamite Cu$_2$Cl(OH)$_3$, a material realization of quantum sawtooth chains with weak interchain couplings, in continuous and pulsed magnetic fields up to 58 T. In particular, we have mapped the entropy landscape for fields as high as 35 T and have identified a field-induced quantum critical point at 21.9(1) T for $\mathbf{H} \parallel c$ axis. The quantum critical point separates field regions with and without magnetic order, evidenced by our thermodynamic study and $^1$H nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, but lies far below full saturation of the magnetization. Corroborated by numerical results using density-matrix renormalization group (DMRG) calculations, we find this behavior associated with a decoupling of the sawtooth chain into two magnetic subsystems consisting of a spin-$1/2$ antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chain (backbone of the sawtooth chain) in the presence of an exchange field produced by the remaining field-polarized spins.

In this study, we probe the coupling between magnetism and lattice dynamics in UO2, a 3k antiferromagnet that undergoes magnetic ordering below its Neel temperature (TN) of 30.8 K. Ultrasound measurements provide insights into the interplay between the material's magnetic properties and lattice vibrations in response to the applied high magnetic field. A model analysis based on ab initio calculated superexchange interactions predicts a change in the magnetic structure from 3k to 2k at around 50 T. Although this change is not evident in the magnetization curve, we observe a crossover of ultrasound velocity Dv/v using a phase-sensitive pulse-echo technique in pulsed magnetic fields of up to 65 T. We show that at Hz > 50 T, the structure remains antiferromagnetic in the (x, y) plane and becomes ferromagnetic in the z direction. A further transition into the 1k structure is theoretically predicted to take place at a magnetic field of ~104 tesla.

In this paper we present new constraints on the velocity-independent cross section of keV-scale mass annihilating Dark Matter particles obtained with SRG/ART-XC after 4 full-sky surveys. These constraints are derived from observations of the Milky Way Halo, 33 Local Group spheroidal dwarf (dSph) galaxies and separately for the dSph galaxy Ursa Major III/UNIONS 1. The constraints from the Milky Way Halo are the strongest among others and among all available in literature for this class of Dark Matter models with particle masses from 4 to 15 keV., Comment: 9 pages, 13 figures. Employing the publicly available CosmoLattice code, we conduct numerical simulations of a domain wall network and the resulting gravitational waves (GWs) in a radiation-dominated Universe in the $Z_2$-symmetric scalar field model. In particular, the domain wall evolution is investigated in detail both before and after reaching the scaling regime, using the combination of numerical and theoretical methods. We demonstrate that the total area of closed walls is negligible compared to that of a single long wall stretching throughout the simulation box. Therefore, the closed walls are unlikely to have a significant impact on the overall network evolution. This is in contrast with the case of cosmic strings, where formation of loops is crucial for maintaining the system in the scaling regime. To obtain the GW spectrum, we develop a technique that separates physical effects from numerical artefacts arising due to finite box size and non-zero lattice spacing. Our results on the GW spectrum agree well with Refs. [29, 30], which use different codes. Notably, we observe a peak at the Hubble scale, an exponential falloff at scales shorter than the wall width, and a plateau/bump at intermediate scales. We also study sensitivity of obtained results on the choice of initial conditions. Using tremendous photon statistics gained with the stray light aperture of the NuSTAR telescope over 11 years of operation, we set strong limits on the emission of close to monochromatic photons from the radiative decays of putative dark matter sterile neutrinos in the Milky Way. In the energy range of 3-20 keV covered by the NuSTAR, the obtained limits reach the bottom edge of theoretical predictions of realistic models where sterile neutrinos are produced in the early Universe. Oscillations of conductance observed in strong magnetic fields are a striking manifestation of the quantum dynamics of charge carriers in solids. The large charge carrier density in typical metals sets the scale of oscillations in both electrical and thermal conductivity, which characterize the Fermi surface. In semimetals, thermal transport at low-charge carrier density is expected to be phonon dominated, yet several experiments observe giant quantum oscillations in thermal transport. This raises the question of whether there is an overarching mechanism leading to sizable oscillations that survives in phonon-dominated semimetals. In this work, we show that such a mechanism exists. It relies on the peculiar phase-space allowed for phonon scattering by electrons when only a few Landau levels are filled. Our measurements on the Dirac semimetal ZrTe5 support this counter-intuitive mechanism through observation of pronounced thermal quantum oscillations, since they occur in similar magnitude and phase in directions parallel and transverse to the magnetic field. Our phase-space argument applies to all low-density semimetals, topological or not, including graphene and bismuth. Our work illustrates that phonon absorption can be leveraged to reveal degrees of freedom through their imprint on longitudinal thermal transport.

Appearance of quantum oscillations (QO) in both thermodynamic and transport properties of metals at low temperatures is the most striking experimental consequence of the existence of a Fermi surface (FS). The frequency of these oscillations and the temperature dependence of their amplitude provides essential information about the FS topology and fermionic quasiparticle properties. Here, we report the observation of an anomalous suppression of the QO amplitude seen in resistivity (Shubnikov de-Haas effect) at sub-kelvin temperatures in ZrTe5 samples with a single small FS sheet comprising less than 5% of the first Brillouin zone. By comparing these results with measurements of the magneto-acoustic QO and the recovery of the usual Lifshitz-Kosevich behavior of the Shubnikov de-Haas (SdH) effect in ZrTe$_5$ samples with a multi-sheet FS, we show that the suppression of the SdH effect originates from a decoupling of the electron liquid from the lattice. On crossing the so-called Bloch-Gr\"uneisen temperature, T$_BG$, electron-phonon scattering becomes strongly suppressed and in the absence of Umklapp scattering the electronic liquid regains Galilean invariance. In addition, we show, using a combination of zero-field electrical conductivity and ultrasonic-absorption measurements, that entering this regime leads to an abrupt increase of electronic viscosity.

We discuss cosmic domain walls described by a tension red-shifting with the expansion of the Universe. These melting domain walls emit gravitational waves with the low-frequency spectral shape $\Omega_{gw}\propto f^{2}$ corresponding to the spectral index $\gamma=3$ favoured by the recent NANOGrav 15 yrs data. We discuss a concrete high-energy physics scenario leading to such a melting domain wall network in the early Universe. This scenario involves a feebly coupled scalar field, which can serve as a promising dark matter candidate. We identify parameters of the model matching the gravitational wave characteristics observed in the NANOGrav data. Dark matter sterile neutrinos radiatively decay in the Milky Way, which can be tested with searches for almost monochromatic photons in the X-ray cosmic spectrum. We analyse the data of SRG/ART-XC telescope operated for two years in the all-sky survey mode. With no significant hints in the Galactic diffuse X-ray spectrum we explore models with sterile neutrino masses in 12-40 keV range and exclude corresponding regions of sterile-active neutrino mixing., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures. The quantum limit (QL) of an electron liquid, realised at strong magnetic fields, has long been proposed to host a wealth of strongly correlated states of matter. Electronic states in the QL are, for example, quasi-one dimensional (1D), which implies perfectly nested Fermi surfaces prone to instabilities. Whereas the QL typically requires unreachably strong magnetic fields, the topological semimetal ZrTe$_5$ has been shown to reach the QL at fields of only a few Tesla. Here, we characterize the QL of ZrTe$_5$ at fields up to 64 T by a combination of electrical-transport and ultrasound measurements. We find that the Zeeman effect in ZrTe$_5$ enables an efficient tuning of the 1D Landau band structure with magnetic field. This results in a Lifshitz transition to a 1D Weyl regime in which perfect charge neutrality can be achieved. Since no instability-driven phase transitions destabilise the 1D electron liquid for the investigated field strengths and temperatures, our analysis establishes ZrTe$_5$ as a thoroughly understood platform for potentially inducing more exotic interaction-driven phases at lower temperatures.

Antiferromagnetic and ferro/ferrimagnetic orders are typically exclusive in nature, thus, their co-existence in atomic-scale proximity is expected only in heterostructures. Breaking this paradigm and broadening the range of unconventional magnetic states, we report here on an atomic-scale hybrid spin state, which is stabilized in three-dimensional crystals of the polar antiferromagnet Co$_2$Mo$_3$O$_8$ by magnetic fields applied perpendicular to the \emph{Co} honeycomb layers and possesses a spontaneous in-plane ferromagnetic moment. Our microscopic spin model, capturing the observed field dependence of the longitudinal and transverse magnetization as well as the magnetoelectric/elastic properties, reveals that this novel spin state is composed of an alternating stacking of antiferromagnetic and ferrimagnetic honeycomb layers. The strong intra-layer and the weak inter-layer exchange couplings together with competing anisotropies at octahedral and tetrahedral \emph{Co} sites are identified as the key ingredients to stabilize antiferromagnetic and ferrimagnetic layers in such a close proximity. We show that the proper balance of magnetic interactions can extend the stability range of this hybrid phase down to zero magnetic field. The possibility to realize a layer-by-layer stacking of such distinct spin orders via suitable combinations of microscopic interactions opens a new dimension towards the nanoscale engineering of magnetic states.

The Baksan Experiment on Sterile Transitions (BEST) probes the gallium anomaly and its possible connections to oscillations between active and sterile neutrinos. Based on the Gallium-Germanium Neutrino Telescope (GGNT) technology of the SAGE experiment, BEST employs two zones of liquid Ga target to explore neutrino oscillations on the meter scale. Oscillations on this short scale could produce deficits in the $^{71}$Ge production rates within the two zones, as well as a possible rate difference between the zones. From July 5th to October 13th 2019, the two-zone target was exposed to a primarily monoenergetic, 3.4-MCi $^{51}$Cr neutrino source 10 times for a total of 20 independent $^{71}$Ge extractions from the two Ga targets. The $^{71}$Ge production rates from the neutrino source were measured from July 2019 to March 2020. At the end of these measurements, the counters were filled with $^{71}$Ge doped gas and calibrated during November 2020. In this paper, results from the BEST sterile neutrino oscillation experiment are presented in details. The ratio of the measured $^{71}$Ge production rates to the predicted rates for the inner and the outer target volumes are calculated from the known neutrino capture cross section. Comparable deficits in the measured ratios relative to predicted values are found for both zones, with the $4 \sigma$ deviations from unity consistent with the previously reported gallium anomaly. If interpreted in the context of neutrino oscillations, the deficits give best fit oscillation parameters of $\Delta m^2=3.3^{+\infty}_{-2.3}$ eV$^2$ and sin$^2 2\theta=0.42^{+0.15}_{-0.17}$, consistent with $\nu_e \rightarrow \nu_s$ oscillations governed by a surprisingly large mixing angle.

Cosmic domain walls are harmless, provided that their tension decreases with expansion of the Universe. This setup can be realized, if the scale of spontaneous symmetry breaking is induced dynamically through the interaction with hot primordial plasma. In that case, the domain wall tension can attain large values in the early Universe without any conflict with observations. Owing to the large initial tension, these topological defects may serve as a powerful source of gravitational waves. We make a preliminary estimate of the gravitational wave spectrum and argue that it is distinct from the spectrum produced by other sources, in particular by domain walls of a constant tension. The resulting gravitational wave signal is in the range accessible by Einstein Telescope, DECIGO, TianQin, LISA, IPTA, or SKA, if the field constituting the domain walls is very feebly coupled with hot primordial plasma and has tiny self-interactions. In particular, one can consider this field for the role of Dark Matter. We discuss various Dark Matter production mechanisms and properties of the emitted gravitational waves associated with them. We find that the conventional freeze-out and freeze-in mechanisms lead to large and perhaps unobservable frequency of gravitational waves. However, the Dark Matter production is also possible at the second order phase transition leading to the domain wall formation or at the inverse phase transition, when the domain walls get dissolved eventually. We study previously unexplored possibility of triggering the first order electroweak phase transition (EWPT) by interactions of the Standard Model (SM) particles with the sector responsible for low scale supersymmetry breaking. The low-energy theory apart from the SM particles contains additional scalar degrees of freedom -- sgoldstinos -- which contribute to the effective scalar potential and thus can trigger the first order EWPT. Remarkably, the latter requires only moderate couplings in the scalar sector. The perturbative description in terms of the effective theory seems formally to be applicable upto the scale of supersymmetry breaking: the Landau pole in the scalar sector is above $10^8$-$10^9$ GeV. The Baksan Experiment on Sterile Transitions (BEST) was designed to investigate the deficit of electron neutrinos, $\nu_{e}$, observed in previous gallium-based radiochemical measurements with high-intensity neutrino sources, commonly referred to as the \textit{gallium anomaly}, which could be interpreted as evidence for oscillations between $\nu_e$ and sterile neutrino ($\nu_s$) states. A 3.414-MCi \nuc{51}{Cr} $\nu_e$ source was placed at the center of two nested Ga volumes and measurements were made of the production of \nuc{71}{Ge} through the charged current reaction, \nuc{71}{Ga}($\nu_e$,e$^-$)\nuc{71}{Ge}, at two average distances. The measured production rates for the inner and the outer targets respectively are ($54.9^{+2.5}_{-2.4}(\mbox{stat})\pm1.4 (\mbox{syst})$) and ($55.6^{+2.7}_{-2.6}(\mbox{stat})\pm1.4 (\mbox{syst})$) atoms of \nuc{71}{Ge}/d. The ratio ($R$) of the measured rate of \nuc{71}{Ge} production at each distance to the expected rate from the known cross section and experimental efficiencies are $R_{in}=0.79\pm0.05$ and $R_{out}= 0.77\pm0.05$. The ratio of the outer to the inner result is 0.97$\pm$0.07, which is consistent with unity within uncertainty. The rates at each distance were found to be similar, but 20-24\% lower than expected, thus reaffirming the anomaly. These results are consistent with $\nu_e \rightarrow \nu_s$ oscillations with a relatively large $\Delta m^2$ ($>$0.5 eV$^2$) and mixing sin$^2 2\theta$ ($\approx$0.4)., Comment: Paper updated to final version

The single ion properties of the zig-zag chain compound SrTm$_2$O$_4$ have been investigated using heat capacity, magnetic susceptibility, magnetization, inelastic neutron scattering, and polarized muon spectroscopy. Two crystal field models are employed to estimate the single ion properties; a Density Function Theory based model and an effective charge model based on the Hutchings point charge model. The latter describes our experimental results well. This model estimates an easy-axis anisotropy for one of the Tm$^{3+}$ sites and an easy-plane anisotropy for the second site. It also predicts a mixed ground state with dominating $J = 0$ characteristics for both sites. Additionally, muon spin rotation/relaxation ($\mu^+$SR) spectra reveal oscillations, typically a sign of long-range magnetic order. However, the temperature dependence of the precession frequency and the relaxation rates indicate that the system is in an extended critical regime and the observed relaxation is actually dynamic.

We propose a novel scenario of Dark Matter production naturally connected with generation of gravitational waves. Dark Matter is modelled as a real scalar, which interacts with the hot primordial plasma through a portal coupling to another scalar field. For a particular sign of the coupling, this system exhibits an inverse second order phase transition. The latter leads to an abundant Dark Matter production, even if the portal interaction is so weak that the freeze-in mechanism is inefficient. The model predicts domain wall formation in the Universe, long time before the inverse phase transition. These domain walls have a tension decreasing with time, and completely disappear at the inverse phase transition, so that the problem of overclosing the Universe is avoided. The domain wall network emits gravitational waves with characteristics defined by those of Dark Matter. In particular, the peak frequency of gravitational waves is determined by the portal coupling constant, and falls in the observable range for currently planned gravitational wave detectors., Comment: 6 pages, 2 figures; matches journal version

We present a comprehensive ultrasound study of the prototypical heavy-fermion material CeRhIn$_5$, examining the origin of the enigmatic 30 T transition. For a field applied at 2$^\circ$ from the $c$ axis, we observed two sharp anomalies in the sound velocity, at $B_m \approx$ 20 T and $B^* \approx$ 30 T, in all the symmetry-breaking ultrasound modes at low temperatures. The lower-field anomaly corresponds to the well-known first-order metamagnetic incommensurate-to-commensurate transition. The higher-field anomaly takes place at 30 T, where an electronic-nematic transition was previously suggested to occur. Both anomalies, observed only within the antiferromagnetic state, are of similar shape, but the corresponding changes of the ultrasound velocity have opposite signs. Based on our experimental results, we suggest that a field-induced magnetic transition from a commensurate to another incommensurate antiferromagnetic state occurs at $B^*$. With further increasing the field angle from the $c$ axis, the anomaly at $B^*$ slowly shifts to higher fields, broadens, and becomes smaller in magnitude. We present acoustic signatures of the electric quadrupolar degrees of freedom in the honeycomb-layer compound UNi$_4$B. The transverse ultrasonic mode $C_{66}$ shows softening below 30 K both in the paramagnetic phase and antiferromagnetic phases down to $\sim0.33$ K. Furthermore, we traced magnetic field-temperature phase diagrams up to 30 T and observed a highly anisotropic elastic response within the honeycomb layer. These observations strongly suggest that $\Gamma_6$(E$_{\rm 2g}$) electric quadrupolar degrees of freedom in localized $5f^2$ ($J = 4$) states are playing an important role in the magnetic toroidal dipole order and magnetic-field-induced phases of UNi$_4$B, and evidence some of the U ions remain in the paramagnetic state even if the system undergoes magnetic toroidal ordering., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures + Supplemental Materials (11 pages, 9 figures)

We performed high-magnetic-field ultrasonic experiments on YbB$_{12}$ up to 59 T to investigate the valence fluctuations in Yb ions. In zero field, the longitudinal elastic constant $C_{11}$, the transverse elastic constants $C_{44}$ and $\left( C_{11} - C_{12} \right)/2$, and the bulk modulus $C_\mathrm{B}$ show a hardening with a change of curvature at around 35 K indicating a small contribution of valence fluctuations to the elastic constants. When high magnetic fields are applied at low temperatures, $C_\mathrm{B}$ exhibits a softening above a field-induced insulator-metal transition signaling field-induced valence fluctuations. Furthermore, at elevated temperatures, the field-induced softening of $C_\mathrm{B}$ takes place at even lower fields and $C_\mathrm{B}$ decreases continuously with field. Our analysis using the multipole susceptibility based on a two-band model reveals that the softening of $C_\mathrm{B}$ originates from the enhancement of multipole-strain interaction in addition to the decrease of the insulator energy gap. Cosmic rays bombard the lunar surface producing mesons, which attenuate inside the regolith. They get slower and decay weakly into mostly sub-GeV neutrinos leaving the surface. Thus the Moon shines in neutrinos. Here we calculate spectra of low energy neutrinos, which exhibit bright features potentially recognisable above isotropic neutrino background in the direction towards the Moon. Their observation, though a very challenging task for future neutrino large volume experiments, would make the Moon the nearest astrophysical source for which the concept of multimessenger astronomy works truly. Dark photons are hypothetical massive vector particles that could mix with ordinary photons. The simplest theoretical model is fully characterised by only two parameters: the mass of the dark photon m$_{\gamma^{\mathrm{D}}}$ and its mixing parameter with the photon, $\varepsilon$. The sensitivity of the SHiP detector is reviewed for dark photons in the mass range between 0.002 and 10 GeV. Different production mechanisms are simulated, with the dark photons decaying to pairs of visible fermions, including both leptons and quarks. Exclusion contours are presented and compared with those of past experiments. The SHiP detector is expected to have a unique sensitivity for m$_{\gamma^{\mathrm{D}}}$ ranging between 0.8 and 3.3$^{+0.2}_{-0.5}$ GeV, and $\varepsilon^2$ ranging between $10^{-11}$ and $10^{-17}$.

Anisotropic low-temperature properties of the cubic spinel helimagnet ZnCr2Se4 in the single-domain spin-spiral state are investigated by a combination of neutron scattering, thermal conductivity, ultrasound velocity, and dilatometry measurements. In an applied magnetic field, neutron spectroscopy shows a complex and nonmonotonic evolution of the spin-wave spectrum across the quantum-critical point that separates the spin-spiral phase from the field-polarized ferromagnetic phase at high fields. A tiny spin gap of the pseudo-Goldstone magnon mode, observed at wave vectors that are structurally equivalent but orthogonal to the propagation vector of the spin helix, vanishes at this quantum critical point, restoring the cubic symmetry in the magnetic subsystem. The anisotropy imposed by the spin helix has only a minor influence on the lattice structure and sound velocity but has a much stronger effect on the heat conductivities measured parallel and perpendicular to the magnetic propagation vector. The thermal transport is anisotropic at T < 2 K, highly sensitive to an external magnetic field, and likely results directly from magnonic heat conduction. We also report long-time thermal relaxation phenomena, revealed by capacitive dilatometry, which are due to magnetic domain motion related to the destruction of the single-domain magnetic state, initially stabilized in the sample by the application and removal of magnetic field. Combined experimental and modeling studies of the magnetocaloric effect, ultrasound, and magnetostriction were performed on single-crystal samples of the spin-dimer system Sr$_3$Cr$_2$O$_8$ in large magnetic fields, to probe the spin-correlated regime in the proximity of the field-induced XY-type antiferromagnetic order also referred to as a Bose-Einstein condensate of magnons. The magnetocaloric effect, measured under adiabatic conditions, reveals details of the field-temperature ($H,T$) phase diagram, a dome characterized by critical magnetic fields $H_{c1}$ = 30.4 T, $H_{c2}$ = 62 T, and a single maximum ordering temperature $T_{{\rm max}}(45~$T$)\simeq$8 K. The sample temperature was observed to drop significantly as the magnetic field is increased, even for initial temperatures above $T_{{\rm max}}$, indicating a significant magnetic entropy associated to the field-induced closure of the spin gap. The ultrasound and magnetostriction experiments probe the coupling between the lattice degrees of freedom and the magnetism in Sr$_3$Cr$_2$O$_8$. We investigate the prospects of the SRG mission in searches for the keV-scale mass sterile neutrino dark matter radiatively decaying into active neutrino and photon. The ongoing all-sky X-ray survey of the SRG space observatory with data acquired by the ART-XC and eROSITA telescopes can provide a possibility to fully explore the resonant production mechanism of the dark matter sterile neutrino, which exploits the lepton asymmetry in the primordial plasma consistent with cosmological limits from the Big Bang Nucleosynthesis. In particular, it is shown that at the end of the four year all-sky survey, the sensitivity of the eROSITA telescope near the 3.5 keV line signal reported earlier can be comparable to that of the XMM-Newton with all collected data, which will allow one to carry out another independent study of the possible sterile neutrino decay signal in this area. In the energy range below $\approx2.4$ keV, the expected constraints on the model parameters can be significantly stronger than those obtained with XMM-Newton. From the ART-XC data, in the energy range approximately from 5 to 20 keV, it can be possible to get more stringent constraints than those obtained with NuSTAR so far. We discuss the gravitational creation of superheavy particles $\chi$ in an inflationary scenario with a quartic potential and a non-minimal coupling between the inflaton $\varphi$ and the Ricci curvature: $\xi \varphi^2 R/2$. We show that for large constants $\xi >> 1$, there can be abundant production of particles $\chi$ with masses largely exceeding the inflationary Hubble rate $H_{infl}$, up to $(a~few) \times \xi H_{infl}$, even if they are conformally coupled to gravity. We discuss two scenarios involving these gravitationally produced particles $\chi$. In the first scenario, the inflaton has only gravitational interactions with the matter sector and the particles $\chi$ reheat the Universe. In this picture, the inflaton decays only due to the cosmic expansion, and effectively contributes to dark radiation, which can be of the observable size. The existing limits on dark radiation lead to an upper bound on the reheating temperature. In the second scenario, the particles $\chi$ constitute Dark Matter, if substantially stable. The rare pion decays ${\pi}^+{\rightarrow}{\mu}^+{\nu}_{\mu}{\nu}\bar{\nu}$ and ${\pi}^+{\rightarrow}e^+{\nu}_{e}{\nu}\bar{\nu}$ are allowed in the Standard Model but highly suppressed. These decays were searched for using data from the PIENU experiment. A first result for ${\Gamma}({\pi}^+{\rightarrow}{\mu}^+{\nu}_{\mu}{\nu}\bar{\nu})/{\Gamma}({\pi}^+{\rightarrow}{\mu}^+{\nu}_{\mu})<8.6{\times}10^{-6}$, and an improved measurement ${\Gamma}({\pi}^+{\rightarrow}{e}^+{\nu}_{e}{\nu}\bar{\nu})/{\Gamma}({\pi}^+{\rightarrow}{\mu}^+{\nu}_{\mu})<1.6{\times}10^{-7}$ were obtained., Comment: 6 figures

In a supersymmetric extension of the Standard Model of particle physics (SM) with low scale of supersymmetry breaking, sgoldstino of (sub)TeV mass can be observed at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) as a peak in diboson mass spectra. Moreover, as a singlet with respect to the SM gauge group, scalar sgoldstino can mix with the SM-like Higgs boson and interfere in all neutral channels providing with the promising signatures of new physics if superpartners are heavy. Sgoldstino couplings to the SM particles are determined by the pattern of soft supersymmetry breaking parameters. Here we concentrate on the cases with a noticeable sgoldstino contribution to di-Higgs channel. Having found a phenomenologically viable region in the model parameter space where scalar sgoldstino, produced at the LHC in gluon fusion, decays into a pair of the lightest Higgs boson we give predictions for corresponding cross section. Using the results of the LHC searches for scalar resonances we place bounds on the supersymmetry breaking scale $\sqrt{F}$ in this region of parameter space. Remarkably, in this region sgoldstino may also be observed in $W^+W^-$ and $ZZ$ channels, yielding independent signatures, since their signal strengths are related to that of di-Higgs channel., Comment: 25 pages, 10 figures

We report an unexpected magnetic-field-driven magnetic structure in the 5f-electron Shastry- Sutherland system U2Pd2In. This phase develops at low temperatures from a noncollinear antiferromagnetic ground state above the critical field of 25.8 T applied along the a-axis. All U moments have a net magnetic moment in the direction of the applied field, described by a ferromagnetic propagation vector qF = (0 0 0) and an antiferromagnetic component described by a propagation vector qAF = (0 0.30 1/2 ) due to a modulation in the direction perpendicular to the applied field. We conclude that this surprising noncollinear magnetic structure is due to a competition between the single-ion anisotropy trying to keep moments, similar to the ground state, along the [110]-type directions, Dzyaloshinskii-Moryia interaction forcing them to be perpendicular to each other and application of the external magnetic field attempting to align them along the field direction., Comment: 6 Figures

We propose to build and operate a detector that, for the first time, will measure the process $pp\to\nu X$ at the LHC and search for feebly interacting particles (FIPs) in an unexplored domain. The TI18 tunnel has been identified as a suitable site to perform these measurements due to very low machine-induced background. The detector will be off-axis with respect to the ATLAS interaction point (IP1) and, given the pseudo-rapidity range accessible, the corresponding neutrinos will mostly come from charm decays: the proposed experiment will thus make the first test of the heavy flavour production in a pseudo-rapidity range that is not accessible by the current LHC detectors. In order to efficiently reconstruct neutrino interactions and identify their flavour, the detector will combine in the target region nuclear emulsion technology with scintillating fibre tracking layers and it will adopt a muon identification system based on scintillating bars that will also play the role of a hadronic calorimeter. The time of flight measurement will be achieved thanks to a dedicated timing detector. The detector will be a small-scale prototype of the scattering and neutrino detector (SND) of the SHiP experiment: the operation of this detector will provide an important test of the neutrino reconstruction in a high occupancy environment., Comment: Letter of Intent

We study the thermodynamic and high-magnetic-field properties of the magnetic insulator Ba$_5$CuIr$_3$O$_{12}$, which shows no magnetic order down to 2 K consistent with a spin liquid ground state. While the temperature dependence of the magnetic susceptibility and the specific heat shows only weak antiferromagnetic correlations, we find that the magnetization does not saturate up to a field of 59 Tesla, leading to an apparent contradiction. We demonstrate that the paradox can be resolved, and all of the experimental data can be consistently described within the framework of random singlet states. We demonstrate a generic procedure to derive the exchange coupling distribution $P(J)$ from the magnetization measurements and use it to show that the experimental data is consistent with the power-law form $P(J)\sim J^{-\alpha}$ with $\alpha \approx 0.6 $. Thus, we reveal that high-magnetic-field measurements can be essential to discern quantum spin liquid candidates from disorder dominated states that do not exhibit long-range order.

It has been recently suggested \cite{Bezrukov:2017ike,Bezrukov:2018wvd} that a cosmic scalar field can completely change the keV-scale sterile neutrino production in the early Universe. Its effect may, for various parameter choices, either suppress sterile neutrino production and make moderate active-sterile mixing cosmologically acceptable, or increase the production and generate considerable dark matter component out of sterile neutrino with otherwise negligible mixing with SM. In this paper we provide analytic estimates complementing and providing details of the numerical calculations performed in \cite{Bezrukov:2018wvd} in the case of resonant amplification of the sterile neutrino production. We present the magnetic phase diagram of a spin-1/2 chain antiferromagnet Sr$_2$CuO$_3$ studied by ultrasound phase-sensitive detection technique. We observe an enhanced effect of external magnetic field on the ordering temperature of the system, which is in the extreme proximity to the quantum critical point. Inside the N\'eel ordered phase, we detect an additional field-induced continuous phase transition, which is unexpected for a collinear Heisenberg antiferromagnet. This transition is accompanied by softening of magnetic excitation mode observed by electron-spin resonance, which can be associated with a longitudinal (amplitude) mode of the order parameter in a weakly-coupled system of spin-1/2 chains. These results suggest transition from a transverse collinear antiferromagnet to an amplitude-modulated spin density wave phase induced by magnetic field., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures

We report a high-resolution terahertz spectroscopic study of quantum spin dynamics in the antiferromagnetic Heisenberg-Ising spin-chain compound BaCo$_2$V$_2$O$_8$ as a function of temperature and longitudinal magnetic field. Confined spinon excitations are observed in an antiferromagnetic phase below $T_N\simeq 5.5$ K. In a field-induced gapless phase above $B_c=3.8$ T, we identify many-body string excitations as well as low-energy fractional psinon/antipsinon excitations by comparing to Bethe-Ansatz calculations. We report that the local Ising anisotropy in pyrochlore oxides - the crucial requirement for realizing the spin-ice state - can be broken by means of high magnetic fields. For the case of the well-established classical spin-ice compound Ho$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$ the magnetization exceeds the angle-dependent saturation value of the Ising limit using ultra-high fields up to 120 T. However, even under such extreme magnetic fields full saturation cannot be achieved. Crystal-electric-field calculations reveal that a level crossing for two of the four ion positions leads to magnetization steps at 55 and 100 T. In addition, we show that by using a field sweep rate in the range of the spin-relaxation time the dynamics of the spin system can be probed. Exclusively at 25 ns/T a new peak of the susceptibility appears around 2 T. Dispersion relations---a corollary of unitarity and analyticity---are among the few methods which can be employed to study low energy processes in QCD. In this work we critically revisit the calculation of decay widths of a hypothetical light scalar boson into pions and kaons. Strong interactions of the mesons in the final state affect these decays significantly. We argue that applications of the dispersion relations to the calculation of these decay widths, which are present in the literature, rely on an uncontrollable approximation of the reduced S-matrix. When a limited number of initial and final decay channels are considered, in general neither a unitary S-matrix nor its version corrected by an inelasticity factor are justified. The scalar form factor calculation provides a transparent example to illustrate this statement. Therefore, the results of this calculation, which are important for theoretical, cosmological and experimental applications, must be treated with caution. The visible and dark sectors of particle physics can be connected via kinetic mixing between ordinary and hidden photons. If the latter is light its production in high energy collisions of ordinary particles proceeds via oscillations with ordinary photons similarly to the neutrino processes. Generically, the experiments are insensitive to mass of the hidden vector, if it is lighter than 1\,MeV, and it does not decay into $e^+e^-$-pair. Still, one can use the missing energy and scattering off the detector material as signatures to search for the light vectors. Presence of media suppresses production of the light vectors making the experiments insensitive to the entire model. We report high-frequency/high-field electron spin resonance (ESR) and high-field magnetization studies on single crystals of the bond-disordered pyrochlore NaCaCo$_2$F$_7$. Frequency- and temperature-dependent ESR investigations above the freezing temperature $T_f \sim 2.4$ K reveal the coexistence of two distinct magnetic phases. A cooperative paramagnetic phase, evidenced by a gapless excitation mode, is found as well as a spin-glass phase developing below 20 K which is associated with a gapped low-energy excitation. Effective $g$-factors close to 2 are obtained for both modes in line with pulsed high-field magnetization measurements which show an unsaturated isotropic behavior up to 58 T at 2 K. In order to describe the field-dependent magnetization in high magnetic fields, we propose an empirical model accounting for highly anisotropic ionic $g$-tensors expected for this material and taking into account the strongly competing interactions between the spins which lead to a frustrated ground state. As a detailed quantitative relation between effective $g$-factors as determined from ESR and the local $g$-tensors obtained by neutron scattering [Ross et al., Phys. Rev. We describe two new generation mechanisms for Dark Matter composed of sterile neutrinos with ${\cal O}(1)$ keV mass. The model contains a light scalar field which coherently oscillates in the early Universe and modulates the Majorana mass of the sterile neutrino. In a region of model parameter space, the oscillations between active and sterile neutrinos are resonantly enhanced. This mechanism allows us to produce sterile neutrino DM with small mixing angle with active neutrinos, thus evading the X-ray constraints. At the same time the spectrum of produced DM is much cooler, than in the case of ordinary oscillations in plasma, opening a window of lower mass DM, which is otherwise forbidden by structure formation considerations. In other regions of the model parameter space, where the resonance does not appear, another mechanism can operate: large field suppresses the active-sterile oscillations, but instead sterile neutrinos are produced by the oscillating scalar field when the effective fermion mass crosses zero.
