Abstract

The trematode Postlepidapedon opisthobifurcatum (Zdzitowiecki, 1990) is a common intestinal parasite of the gadiform fishes of the Southern Ocean. In this work, we supplement the description of the species with the anatomy of the terminal part of the reproductive system and with molecular data. The male terminal genitalia are characterised by the presence of the external seminal vesicle and cirrus-sac. The external seminal vesicle is surrounded by aciniform groups of outer prostatic cells. Groups of outer prostatic cells and proximal parts of their ducts are associated with a thin-walled membrane that is connected to the proximal edge of the cirrus-sac. The cirrus-sac is claviform, with a long proximal part accommodating the tubular, thin-walled internal seminal vesicle and ducts of outer prostatic cells. The female terminal genitalia are represented by a thick-walled metraterm, which is surrounded by aciniform groups of glandular cells. Phylogenetic analysis based on 28S rDNA partial sequences data placed P. opisthobifurcatum into the monophyletic group Lepidapedidae, including the species Myzoxenus insolens (Crowcroft, 1945), Intusatrium robustum Durio et Manter, 1968, and Postlepidapedon uberisBray, Cribb et Barker, 1997. However, we were unable to detect direct phylogenetic connections between P. opisthobifurcatum and P. uberis.

Abstract

The epitaxial growth of the polar GaP(100) on the nonpolar Si(100) substrate suffers from inevitable defects at the antiphase domain boundaries, resulting from mono-atomic steps on the Si(100) surface. Stabilization of Si(100) substrate surfaces with arsenic is a promising technological step enabling the preparation of Si substrates with double atomic steps and reduced density of the APDs. In this paper, 4-50 nm thick GaP epitaxial films were grown on As-terminated Si(100) substrates with different types of doping, miscuts, and As-surface termination by metalorganic vapor phase epitaxy. The GaP(As)/Si(100) heterostructures were investigated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) combined with gas cluster ion beam (GCIB) sputtering and by hard X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (HAXPES). We found residuals of arsenic atoms in the GaP lattice (0.2-0.3 at.%) and a localization of As atoms at the GaP(As)/Si(100) interface (1 at.%). Deconvolution of core level peaks revealed interface core level shifts. In As core levels, chemical shifts between 0.5-0.8 eV were measured and identified by angle-resolved XPS measurements. Similar valence band offset (VBO) values of 0.6 eV were obtained, regardless of the doping type of Si substrate, Si substrate miscut or type of As-terminated Si substrate surface. The band alignment diagram of the heterostructure was deduced.

Abstract

AlGaN-based heterostructures are promising candidates for the fabrication of ultraviolet light-emitting diodes. The analysis of the atomic composition of the grown epitaxial films is important from a technological point of view, allowing precise control over the wavelength and intensity of the emitted light. In this work, the depth profiling of AlN(0001), AlGaN(0001), and AlGaN quantum dot surfaces grown by molecular beam epitaxy was carried out by using angle-resolved x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) combined with Ar gas cluster ion source (GCIS) sputtering. Core level shifts in XPS spectra measured by Al Kα and Ag Lα photon sources were determined. We found that sputtering by Ar1000+ ion clusters with an energy of 10 keV creates disorder on the surface and induces changes in surface atomic composition. As a result, depth profiling with a typical surface-sensitive Al Kα photon source is affected by the damaged layer. The application of a less surface-sensitive Ag Lα photon source with high photon energy could suppress the contribution from the damaged surface layer. Combining GCIS sputtering with Ag Lα line XPS measurements is, therefore, very promising for the quantification of atomic composition in the buried epitaxial layers or heterostructures with thicknesses of several tens of nm. Abstract

Background: Baricitinib is an oral selective Janus kinase 1/2 inhibitor with known anti-inflammatory properties. This study evaluates the efficacy and safety of baricitinib in combination with standard of care for the treatment of hospitalised adults with COVID-19. Methods: In this phase 3, double-blind, randomised, placebo-controlled trial, participants were enrolled from 101 centres across 12 countries in Asia, Europe, North America, and South America. Hospitalised adults with COVID-19 receiving standard of care were randomly assigned (1:1) to receive once-daily baricitinib (4 mg) or matched placebo for up to 14 days. Standard of care included systemic corticosteroids, such as dexamethasone, and antivirals, including remdesivir. The composite primary endpoint was the proportion who progressed to high-flow oxygen, non-invasive ventilation, invasive mechanical ventilation, or death by day 28, assessed in the intention-to-treat population. All-cause mortality by day 28 was a key secondary endpoint, and all-cause mortality by day 60 was an exploratory endpoint; both were assessed in the intention-to-treat population. Safety analyses were done in the safety population defined as all randomly allocated participants who received at least one dose of study drug and who were not lost to follow-up before the first post-baseline visit. This study is registered with ClinicalTrials.gov, NCT04421027. Findings: Between June 11, 2020, and Jan 15, 2021, 1525 participants were randomly assigned to the baricitinib group (n=764) or the placebo group (n=761). 1204 (79·3%) of 1518 participants with available data were receiving systemic corticosteroids at baseline, of whom 1099 (91·3%) were on dexamethasone; 287 (18·9%) participants were receiving remdesivir. Overall, 27·8% of participants receiving baricitinib and 30·5% receiving placebo progressed to meet the primary endpoint (odds ratio 0·85 [95% CI 0·67 to 1·08], p=0·18), with an absolute risk difference of −2·7 percentage points (
