Abstract

Photonic integrated circuits (PICs) have contributed to manipulation and routing of optical signals. PICs have been mainly based on silicon on insulator (SOI) technology, due to compatibility with conventional CMOS fabrication processes and also good performing in the near-infrared communication windows. Nevertheless, silicon is not convenient for other purposes that aim to exploit the visible spectrum.

3. Liquid crystal tunable claddings for polymer integrated optical waveguides

Abstract

Optical waveguides in photonic integrated circuits are traditionally passive elements merely carrying optical signals from one point to another. These elements could contribute to the integrated circuit functionality if they were modulated either by variations of the core optical properties, or by using tunable claddings. In this work, the use of liquid crystals as electro-optically active claddings for driving integrated waveguides has been explored. Tunable waveguides have been modeled and fabricated using polymers. Optical functions such as variable coupling and optical switching have been demonstrated.

Abstract

In this work, the performance of a Mach–Zehnder interferometer manufactured in silicon nitride with a liquid crystal cladding is studied. The device consists of two multi-mode interference couplers linked by two rectangular waveguides, the cladding of one of which is a liquid crystal. The structure demonstrates the potential of using liquid crystals as tunable cladding material in simple waveguides as well as in more complex coupling or modulating structures. Liquid crystal cladding permits a local fine-tuning of the effective refractive index of the waveguide, avoiding coarse global temperature control. The study is realized in the visible region (632.8 nm), for its intrinsic interest region in (bio-)sensing or metrology.

Abstract

In this project we aim at addressing the study of the full manufacturing process of a photonic integrated circuit, from the initial stage of components design to the tests required to ensure its proper functioning. Its most innovative aspect compared to the existing technology is that the wavelength used belongs to the visible light spectrum. Thus the dimensions of the waveguides have to be significantly reduced. For this reason, the analysis of new manufacturing protocols, using new materials and new techniques, is required. In addition, the current methods will be also modified in order to be optimized for our scenario. In a first step, design and simulation of the desired devices were conducted so that a set of different configurations can be approached. After that, the integration of the maximum number of these configurations was settled in a chromium mask design. This mask was then used in the photolithography process to harden SU-8 photoresist over a silicon substrate. Good fabrication results were obtained, being able to reach waveguides structures of 0.5 μm thick and 1.5 μm wide. The final chips were characterized in a dark room with two different laser input and proper light guidance was demonstrated as well as output switching.
