This article discusses the book "May Sarton: A Biography," by Margot Peters. Throughout Sarton's life, the creative effort came decidedly first, and the many people enlisted to sustain it constituted her supporting cast. Any concept of "responsibility in a human sense" was abstract for her, and not much acted upon. In her many intense relationships, she had a way of harvesting nourishment as her due, eyeing fresh pastures without much of a backward glance. She died in 1995 at 83, with an enviable body of work to her credit and a legion of devoted fans. But throughout her life alienation preoccupied her.
