7. The contribution of pattern recognition of seismic and morphostructural data to seismic hazard assessment

Abstract

The reliable statistical characterization of the spatial and temporal properties of large earthquakes occurrence is one of the most debated issues in seismic hazard assessment, due to the unavoidably limited observations from past events. We show that pattern recognition techniques, which are designed in a formal and testable way, may provide significant space-time constraints about impending strong earthquakes. This information, when combined with physically sound methods for ground shaking computation, like the neo-deterministic approach (NDSHA), may produce effectively preventive seismic hazard maps. Pattern recognition analysis of morphostructural data provide quantitative and systematic criteria for identifying the areas prone to the largest events, taking into account a wide set of possible geophysical and geological data, whilst the formal identification of precursory seismicity patterns (by means of CN and M8S algorithms), duly validated by prospective testing, provides useful constraints about impending strong earthquakes at the intermediate space-time scale. According to a multi-scale approach, the information about the areas where a strong earthquake is likely to occur can be effectively integrated with different observations (e.g. geodetic and satellite data), including regional scale modeling of the stress field variations and of the seismic ground shaking, so as to identify a set of priority areas for detailed investigations of short-term precursors at local scale and for microzonation studies. Results from the pattern recognition of earthquake prone areas (M>=5.0) in the Po plain (Northern Italy), as well as from prospective testing and validation of the time-dependent NDSHA scenarios are presented., Comment: 33 pages, 7 Figures, 9 Tables. 19. Potential Locations of Strong Earthquakes in Bulgaria and the Neighbouring Regions.

Abstract

Information about potential earthquake sources is a key issue for seismic hazard assessment. This study presents the application of a phenomenological approach based on pattern recognition to determine the possible locations of strong earthquakes in the Bulgarian region. The technique assumes the origin of strong earthquakes in morphostructural nodes formed around the intersections of morphostructural lineaments identified by morphostructural zoning. For the territory of the Bulgaria and neighbouring regions, 178 nodes were defined in this work. The CORA-3 pattern recognition algorithm identified 59 seismogenic nodes analysing a set of geophysical and geological node's characteristics. The identified seismogenic nodes are capable to generate earthquakes with magnitude equal to or greater than 6 and are located at the boundaries between the largest tectonic domains: Rila, Pirin, and Rhodope orogens; the Serbian-Macedonian massif; and in the Stara Planina belt. The set of characteristic features of seismogenic nodes indicates that the vicinity of potential nodes is characterized by a high contrast of neotectonic movements of the Earth's crust and the presence of deep heterogeneities in the Earth's crust. About 40% of the recognized nodes are not associated with any earthquakes, while the rest of the recognized seismogenic nodes are characterized by an area with a radius of 25 km where earthquakes are known to occur. Part of these "non active" seismogenic nodes are close to the historical events with magnitudes higher than 5.5 since the magnitude and location of historical events have large uncertainties. Another part of the seismogenic nodes may slightly change the location due to the uncertainties in morphostructural zonation. Other nodes may indicate unknown historical seismicity or paleoearthquakes. Defined M6+ seismogenic nodes can fill the potential gaps in the recorded seismicity on the territory of Bulgaria, thus to improve the seismic hazard assessment of the studied region. Abstract

On February 6, 2023, two devastating earthquakes occurred in the southeast of Türkiye with an interval of 9 hours, which also affected the territory of Syria. The position of the epicenters of these earthquakes is discussed in connection with the forecast of M6.5+ earthquake locations for the territory of Anatolia and adjacent regions, obtained in 1974 by Gelfand et al., based on morphostructural zoning data employing the Cora-3 pattern recognition algorithm. It has been established that the epicenters of the earthquakes of February 6, 2023 were located in the node, which in 1974 was identified as capable of M6.5+. Since 1974, 36 M6.5+ events have been observed in the study region. The spatial distribution of these events is analyzed in relation to the seismogenic nodes recognized in 1974. It was found that the epicenters of 32 such events are located in the nodes recognized as dangerous for M6.5+ in 1974. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

19 pags., 16 figs., 8 tabs., We present the design, prototype developments and test results of the new time-of-flight detector (ToFD) which is part of the R3B experimental setup at GSI and FAIR, Darmstadt, Germany. The ToFD detector is able to detect heavy-ion residues of all charges at relativistic energies with a relative energy precision σΔE/ ΔE of up to 1% and a time precision of up to 14 ps (sigma). Abstract

A method for estimating the ratio of stable carbon isotopes 13С/12С in the composition of phthalates from surface water at a trace concentration level is proposed. It is based on the concentration of hydrophobic components of water using an analytical reversed phase HPLC column followed by their gradient separation and detection of eluted phthalates using a high-resolution time-of-flight mass spectrometer (ESI-HRMS-TOF) in the form of molecular ions. The ratio of stable carbon isotopes 13С/12C in phthalates is calculated as a ratio of integrals under the monoisotopic [M+1+H]+ and [M+H]+ peaks. The Δ13C value is calculated relatively to the 13C/12C ratio in commercial DnBP and DEHP phthalates used as standards. The minimal concentration of DnBP and DEHP in water required for a reliable determination of Δ13C value is estimated by the level of ca. 0.2 μg L−1. 34. Development, Fabrication and Testing of the RF-Kicker for the Acculinna-2 Fragment Separator

Abstract

The Acculinna-2 radioactive beam separator was designed and built between 2012 and 2014, then installed and tested by Sigmaphi in 2015 and in full operation since 2016 at the Flerov laboratory of JINR in Dubna. In order to achieve efficient separation of neutron-deficient species, an RF kicker was foreseen since the beginning of the project but was put on hold for many years. In 2016 Sigmaphi got a contract to study, build, install and test an RF kicker with a variable frequency ranging between 15 and 21 MHz and capable of producing 15kV/cm transverse electric fields in a 10 cm gap over a 1m long distance.# The presentation first recalls the rationale of an RF-kicker to separate neutron-deficient species. It then goes through the different steps of the study, initial choice of the cavity structure, first dimensioning from analytical formulas, finite elements computations and tuning methods envisioned, down to a final preliminary design.# A 1/10 scaled mock-up of this final shape was built and tested as a check before building the full-size cavity. The NTG company was then contracted to perform, in a joint collaboration with Sigmaphi, the final study, detailed design, construction and factory testing of the real cavity. The presentation highlights the fabrication and tests of both mock-up and real size cavities through a series of pictures.# The complete RF-kicker, with its power supply, control and pumping systems was installed on the Acculinna-2 beamline in June 2019. Because the U400M cyclotron was due to shut down by mid-2020, the Acculinna-2 team decided to use the separator to accumulate as much data as possible, to be processed during the 2 years closing time. A 1-week time window for kicker testing was only available in February 2020, a short but sufficient time lapse to successfully drive the cavity at full power and test it over a wide frequency range. Abstract

An approach to sequence-dependent retention time prediction of peptides based on the concept of liquid chromatography at critical conditions (LCCC) is presented. Within the LCCC approach applied to biopolymers (BioLCCC), the specific retention time corresponds to a particular sequence. In combination with mass spectrometry, this approach provides an efficient tool to solve problems wherein the protein sequencing is essential. In this work, we present a theoretical background of the BioLCCC concept and demonstrate experimentally its feasibility for sequence-dependent LC retention time prediction for peptides. BioLCCC model is based on three notions: (a) a random walk model for a macromolecule chain; (b) an entropy and energy compensation for the macromolecules within the adsorbent pore; and (c) a set of phenomenological parameters for the effective interaction energies of interactions between the amino acid residues and the adsorbent surface. In this work, the phenomenological parameters have been obtained for [C.sub.18] reversed-phase HPLC. Note, that contrary to alternative additive models for retention time prediction based on summation of the so-called 'retention coefficients', the BioLCCC approach takes into account the location of amino acids within the primary structure of a peptide and, thus, allows the identification of the peptides having the same composition of amino acids but differing by their arrangement. As a result, this new approach allows prediction of retention time for any possible amino acid sequence in particular HPLC experiments. In addition, the BioLCCC model lacks of main drawbacks of additive approaches that predict retention time for sequences of limited chain lengths and provide information about amino acid composition only. The proposed BioLCCC approach was characterized experimentally using LTQ FT LC-MS and LC-MS/MS data obtained earlier for Escherichia coli. The HPLC system calibration was performed using peptide retention standards. The results received show a linear correlation between predicted and experimental retention times, with a correlation coefficient, [R.sup.2], of 0.97 for a peptide standard mixture and 0.9 for E. coli data, respectively, with the standard error below 1 min. The work presents the first description of a BioLCCC approach for high-throughput peptide characterization and preliminary results of its feasibility tests.

Abstract

There is a very important governmental issue, which is to secure energy efficiency of buildings under design. This issue is stated in the federal law, governmental regulations and orders of the subject Ministries. However, issues related to energy-efficiency are appropriate for both existing buildings and the ones under design. Total volume of buildings constructed according to new heat protection rules and regulations valid since 2000, accounts for 5% of the total volume of all the housing stock in the Russian Federation. Consequently, reduction of heat energy consumption in houses built before 2000 is getting more crucial in the nearest future. Nowadays there is a national programme to execute major repair works in the existing buildings. It is important to have this programme correlated with the energy-saving program. However, the economy of investment projects shouldn’t be disregarded when running this programme. Energy-efficient activities should contribute to a better return on investment, and reduction of the energy consumed.
