Guided by thermodynamic modeling, engineering phase transformation pathways via thermo-mechanical processing, in a complex concentrated alloy/high entropy alloy (HEA) of composition Al0.3CoFeNi, lead to a novel multi-scale microstructure consisting of fine-scale FCC + L12 grains mixed with B2 + BCC grains. The two-step pathway comprises initial decomposition of the parent single-phase FCC to form a fine-grained FCC + B2 microstructure, which further decomposes in the second step into the complex four-phase mixture, exhibiting an excellent combination of tensile yield stress of ∼1490 MPa, ultimate tensile strength of ∼1663 MPa, with a good ductility of ∼12% at room temperature. This paper reports a novel multi-phase microstructure in a HEA/CCA similar to the microstructure observed in dual-phase stainless steel. The Tb60Ni30Al10 amorphous alloy was prepared by melt-spinning in the form of ribbons. Its magnetic behavior shows upon magnetization the occurrence of a spin glass to ferromagnetic and a paramagnetic to ferromagnetic transitions at 5 and 48 K. The magnetocaloric effects associated with these transitions were investigated. Large positive and negative magnetic entropy changes upon magnetization have been observed in a temperature range interesting for gas liquefaction. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Nd49Al13Ni38 amorphous alloy has been prepared by melt-spinning in the form of ribbons. Its magnetic properties have been investigated via superconducting quantum interference device magnetometry and its magnetic phase diagram was established. Hysteresis and temperature-dependent magnetization measurements show the occurrence of a reentrant spin-glass behavior on cooling. With increasing applied field, the spin-freezing temperature decreases and disappears at very high field, and the Curie temperature increases, broadening the temperature range of the ferromagnetic state. The resulting magnetocaloric effect was evaluated and compared to other interesting magnetic refrigerant materials. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The focus of this work is on exploring the effect of cooling rate on the microstructure and hardness of the Mg 80 Ni 10 Gd 10 alloy which is known for its potential hydrogen storage capability. A series of chart is displayed to compare the mechanical and transport properties with commercial Mg-based alloys, Mg-based metallic glasses and low density high entropy alloys.
