The epistemological debates that have preoccupied studies of anticolonial nationalism are explored. The epistemology of comparison that defined the late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century swadeshi nationalist project of autonomy and situates it within the lived experience of colonial unevenness is elaborated.

Geoff Eley's book 'A Crooked Line' is analyzed. The author offers a critical though appreciative reading of Eley's book and hopes that such works will provide the stimulus for a mediation of social and cultural forms in both historical debates and political imagination.
