Recent work by several groups has established the properties of the dwarf satellites to M31. We reexamine the reported kinematics of this group employing a fresh technique we have developed previously. By calculating the distribution of a chi statistic (which we define in the paper) for the M31 system, we conclude that the total mass (disk plus halo) of the primary is unlikely to be as great as that of our own Milky Way. In fact the chi distribution for M31 indicates that, like NGC 3992, it does not have a massive halo. In contrast, the analysis of the satellites of NGC 1961 and NGC 5084 provides strong evidence for massive halos surrounding both spiral galaxies., Comment: To appear in MNRAS, 10 pages with 6 figures

We report on the 2.5 arcsec (400 pc) resolution CO (J = 1 -> 0) observations covering the whole length of the bar in the strongly barred late-type spiral galaxy NGC 7479. CO emission is detected only along a dust lane that traverses the whole length of the bar, including the nucleus. The emission is strongest in the nucleus. The distribution of emission is clumpy along the bar outside the nucleus, and consists of gas complexes that are unlikely to be gravitationally bound. The CO kinematics within the bar consist of two separate components. A kinematically distinct circumnuclear disk, < 500 pc in diameter, is undergoing predominantly circular motion with a maximum rotational velocity of 245 km/s at a radius of 1 arcsec (160 pc). The CO-emitting gas in the bar outside the circumnuclear disk has substantial noncircular motions which are consistent with a large radial velocity component, directed inwards. The CO emission has a large velocity gradient across the bar dust lane, ranging from 0.5 to 1.9 km/s/pc after correcting for inclination, and the projected velocity change across the dust lane is as high as 200 km/s. This sharp velocity gradient is consistent with a shock front at the location of the bar dust lane. A comparison of H-alpha and CO kinematics across the dust lane shows that although the H-alpha emission is often observed both upstream and downstream from the dust lane, the CO emission is observed only where the velocity gradient is large. The possible formation and evolution of dwarf irregular galaxies from material derived from perturbed evolved galaxies is addressed via an H I study of a likely example, the peculiar system NGC 5291. This system, located in the western outskirts of the cluster Abell 3574, contains the lenticular galaxy NGC 5291 which is in close proximity to a disturbed companion and is flanked by an extensive complex of numerous knots extending roughly 4 min north and 4 min south of the galaxy. In an initial optical and radio study, Longmore et al. (1979, MNRAS, 188, 285) showed that these knots have the spectra of vigorous star-forming regions, and suggested that some may in fact be young dwarf irregular galaxies. High resolution 21-cm line observations taken with the VLA are presented here and reveal that the H I distribution associated with this system encompasses not only the entire N-S complex of optical knots, but also forms an incomplete ring or tail that extends approximately 3 min to the west. The H I associated with NGC 5291 itself shows a high velocity range; the Seashell is not detected. The formation mechanism for this unusual system is unclear and two models - a large, low-luminosity ram-swept disk, and a ram-swept interaction-are discussed. The H I in the system contains numerous concentrations, mostly along the N-S arc of the star-forming complexes, which generally coincide with one or more optical knots; the larger H I features contain several x 10(exp 9) solar mass of gas. Each of the knots is compared to a set of criteria designed to determine if these objects are bound against their own internal kinetic energy and are tidally stable relative to the host galaxy. An analysis of the properties of the H I concentrations surrounding the optical star-forming complexes indicates that at least the largest of these is a bound system; it also possesses a stellar component. It is suggested that this object is a genuinely young dwarf irregular galaxy that has evolved from the material associated with the system and that this entire complex contains several proto- or young dwarf irregular galaxies in various stages of development. We are therefore witnessing the early evolution of a number of genuinely young galaxies. Given the evident importance of the NGC 5291 system as a 'nursery' for young galaxies, careful modeling is required if we are to understand this remarkable galaxy.

Here we report our preliminary findings from an HI search for dwarf galaxies in three environmentally distinct regions of the sky: a galactic void, a galactic cluster, and an interaction field. This study is sensitive at the 5(sigma) level to hydrogen masses as low as 5 x 10(exp 5) solar mass. We have made three possible detections of previously uncatalogued objects: one in the void field, and two in the cluster field. Reduction of the interaction field is in progress.
