We present a new method - called HINORA (HIgh-NOise RANdom SAmple Consensus) - for the identification of regular structures in 3D point distributions. Motivated by the possible existence of the so called Council of Giants, i.e. a ring of twelve massive galaxies surrounding the Local Group in the Local Sheet with a radius of 3.75 Mpc, we apply HINORA to the Local Volume Galaxy catalogue confirming its existence. When varying the lower limit of K-band luminosity of the galaxy entering the catalogue, we further report on the existence of another ring-like structure in the Local Volume that now contains the Milky Way and M31. However, this newly found structure is dominated by low-mass (satellite) galaxies. While we here simply present the novel method as well as its first application to observational data, follow-up work using numerical simulations of cosmic structure formation shall shed light into the origin of such regular patterns in the galaxy distribution. This is the second paper in a series presenting the results from a 500 $h^{-1}$Mpc large constrained hydro-dynamical simulation of the local Universe (SLOW). The initial conditions are based on peculiar velocities derived from the CosmicFlows-2 catalogue. The inclusion of galaxy formation treatment, allows to directly predict observable properties of the Intra-Cluster Medium (ICM) within galaxy clusters. Comparing the properties of observed galaxy clusters within the local Universe with the properties of their simulated counterparts, enables us to assess the effectiveness of the initial condition constraints in accurately replicating the non-linear properties of the largest, collapsed objects within the simulation. Based on the combination of several, publicly available surveys, we identified 45 local Universe galaxy clusters in SLOW, including the 13 most massive from the Planck SZ catalog and 70% of those with $M_{500} > 2\times 10^{14}$ M$_{\odot}$. We then derived the probability of the cross identification based on mass, X-ray luminosity, temperature and Compton-y by comparing it to a random selection. In relation to previous constrained simulations of the local volume, we found in SLOW a much larger amount of replicated galaxy clusters, where their simulation based mass prediction falls within the uncertainties of the observational mass estimates. Comparing the median observed and simulated masses of our cross identified sample allows to independently deduce a hydrostatic mass bias of $(1-b)\approx0.87$. The SLOW constrained simulation of the local Universe faithfully reproduces numerous fundamental characteristics of the galaxy clusters within our local neighbourhood, opening a new avenue for studying the formation and evolution of a large set of individual galaxy clusters as well as testing our understanding of physical processes governing the ICM., Comment: Submitted to Astronomy & Astrophysics

Observations with JWST have revealed an unexpected high abundance of bright z>10 galaxy candidates. We explore whether a stellar initial mass function (IMF) that becomes increasingly top-heavy towards higher redshifts and lower gas-phase metallicities results in a higher abundance of bright objects in the early universe and how it affects the evolution of galaxy properties compared to a constant IMF. We incorporate such an evolving IMF into the Astraeus framework that couples galaxy evolution and reionisation in the first billion years. Our implementation accounts for the IMF dependence of supernova feedback, metal enrichment, ionising and ultraviolet radiation emission. We conduct two simulations: one with a Salpeter IMF and one with the evolving IMF. Compared to a constant Salpeter IMF, we find that (i) the higher abundance of massive stars in the evolving IMF results in more light per unit stellar mass, a slower build-up of stellar mass and lower stellar-to-halo mass ratio; (ii) due to the self-similar growth of the underlying dark matter halos, the evolving IMF's star formation main sequence hardly deviates from that of the Salpeter IMF; (iii) the evolving IMF's stellar mass-metallicity relation shifts to higher metallicities while its halo mass-metallicity relation remains unchanged; (iv) the evolving IMF's median dust-to-metal mass ratio is lower due to its stronger SN feedback; (v) the evolving IMF requires lower values of the escape fraction of ionising photons and exhibits a flatter median relation and smaller scatter between the ionising photons emerging from galaxies and the halo mass. Yet, the topology of the ionised regions hardly changes compared to the Salpeter IMF. These results suggest that a top-heavier IMF alone is unlikely to explain the higher abundance of bright z>10 sources, since the lower mass-to-light ratio is counteracted by the stronger stellar feedback., Comment: 19 pages, 13 figures, Accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics

The reconstruction of the large scale velocity field from the grouped Cosmicflows-4 (CF4) database is presented. The lognormal bias of the inferred distances and velocities data is corrected by the Bias Gaussianization correction (BGc) scheme, and the linear density and velocity fields are reconstructed by means of the Wiener filter (WF) and constrained realizations (CRs) algorithm. These tools are tested against a suite of random and constrained Cosmicflows-3-like mock data. The CF4 data consists of 3 main subsamples - the 6dFGS and the SDSS data - and the `others'. The individual contributions of the subsamples have been studied. The quantitative analysis of the velocity field is done mostly by the mean overdensity ($\Delta_L(R)$) and the bulk velocity ($V_{\mathrm{bulk}}(R)$) profiles of the velocity field out to $300\, h^{-1}{\rm Mpc}$. The $V_{\mathrm{bulk}}(R)$ and $\Delta_{\mathrm L}(R)$ profiles of the CF4 data without its 6dFGS component are consistent with the cosmic variance to within $1\sigma$. The 6dFGS sample dominates the $V_{\mathrm{bulk}}$ ($\Delta_{\mathrm L}$) profile beyond $\sim120\, h^{-1}{\rm Mpc}$, and drives it to roughly a $3.4\sigma$ ($-1.9\sigma$) excess (deficiency) relative to the cosmic variance at $R\sim250\ (190)\ \, h^{-1}{\rm Mpc}$. The excess in the amplitude of $V_{\mathrm{bulk}}$ is dominated by its Supergalactic X component, roughly in the direction of the Shapley Concentration. The amplitude and alignment of the inferred velocity field from the CF4 data is at $\sim(2\,-\,3)\,\sigma$ discrepancy with respect to the $\Lambda$CDM model. We study the properties of associations of dwarf galaxies and their dependence on the environment. Associations of dwarf galaxies are extended systems composed exclusively of dwarf galaxies, considering as dwarf galaxies those galaxies less massive than $M_{\star, \rm max} = 10^{9.0}$ ${\rm M}_{\odot}\,h^{-1}$. We identify these particular systems using a semi-analytical model of galaxy formation coupled to a dark matter only simulation in the $\Lambda$ Cold Dark Matter cosmological model. To classify the environment, we estimate eigenvalues from the tidal field of the dark matter particle distribution of the simulation. We find that the majority, two thirds, of associations are located in filaments ($ \sim 67$ per cent), followed by walls ($ \sim 26 $ per cent), while only a small fraction of them are in knots ($ \sim 6 $ per cent) and voids ($ \sim 1 $ per cent). Associations located in more dense environments present significantly higher velocity dispersion than those located in less dense environments, evidencing that the environment plays a fundamental role in their dynamical properties. However, this connection between velocity dispersion and the environment depends exclusively on whether the systems are gravitational bound or unbound, given that it disappears when we consider associations of dwarf galaxies that are gravitationally bound. Although less than a dozen observationally detected associations of dwarf galaxies are currently known, our results are predictions on the eve of forthcoming large surveys of galaxies, which will enable these very particular systems to be identified and studied., Comment: 13 pages, 9 figures. We explore how the characteristics of the cross-correlation functions between the 21cm emission from the spin-flip transition of neutral hydrogen (HI) and early Lyman-$\alpha$ (Ly$\alpha$) radiation emitting galaxies (Ly$\alpha$ emitters, LAEs) depend on the reionisation history and topology and the simulated volume. For this purpose, we develop an analytic expression for the 21cm-LAE cross-correlation function and compare it to results derived from different Astraeus and 21cmFAST reionisation simulations covering a physically plausible range of scenarios where either low-mass ($<10^{9.5}M_\odot$) or massive ($>10^{9.5}M_\odot$) galaxies drive reionisation. Our key findings are: (i) the negative small-scale ($<2$ cMpc) cross-correlation amplitude scales with the intergalactic medium's (IGM) average HI fraction ($\langle\chi_\mathrm{HI}\rangle$) and spin-temperature weighted overdensity in neutral regions ($\langle1+\delta\rangle_\mathrm{HI}$); (ii) the inversion point of the cross-correlation function traces the peak of the size distribution of ionised regions around LAEs; (iii) the cross-correlation amplitude at small scales is sensitive to the reionisation topology, with its anti-correlation or correlation decreasing the stronger the ionising emissivity of the underlying galaxy population is correlated to the cosmic web gas distribution (i.e. the more low-mass galaxies drive reionisation); (iv) the required simulation volume to not underpredict the 21cm-LAE anti-correlation amplitude when the cross-correlation is derived via the cross-power spectrum rises as the size of ionised regions and their variance increases. The aim of cosmological simulations is to reproduce the properties of the observed Universe, serving as tools to test structure and galaxy formation models. Constrained simulations of our local cosmological region up to a few hundred Mpc/h , the local Universe, are designed to reproduce the actual cosmic web of structures as observed. A question that often arises is how to judge the quality of constrained simulations against the observations of the Local Universe. Here we introduce the Local Universe model (LUM), a new methodology, whereby many constrained simulations can be judged and the ''best'' initial conditions can be identified. By characterising the Local Universe as a set of rich clusters, the model identifies haloes that serve as simulated counterparts to the observed clusters. Their merit is determined against a null hypothesis, the probability that such a counterpart could be identified in a random, unconstrained simulation. This model is applied to 100 constrained simulations using the Cosmicflows-3 data. Cluster counterparts are found for all constrained simulations, their distribution of separation from the true observed cluster position and their mass distribution are investigated. Context: Several observations of the local Universe (LU) point towards the existence of very prominent structures. The presence of massive galaxy clusters and local super clusters on the one hand, but also large local voids and under-densities on the other hand. However, it is highly non trivial to connect such different observational selected tracers to the underlying dark matter (DM) distribution. Methods (abridged): We used a 500 Mpc/h large constrained simulation of the LU with initial conditions based on peculiar velocities derived from the CosmicFlows-2 catalogue and follow galaxy formation physics directly in the hydro-dynamical simulations to base the comparison on stellar masses of galaxies or X-ray luminosity of clusters. We also used the 2668 Mpc/h large cosmological box from the Magneticum simulations to evaluate the frequency of finding such anomalies in random patches within simulations. Results: We demonstrate that haloes and galaxies in our constrained simulation trace the local DM density field very differently. Thereby, this simulation reproduces the observed 50% under-density of galaxy clusters and groups within the sphere of ~100 Mpc when applying the same mass or X-ray luminosity limit used in the observed cluster sample (CLASSIX), which is consistent with a ~1.5$\sigma$ feature. At the same time, the simulation reproduces the observed over-density of massive galaxy clusters within the same sphere, which on its own also corresponds to a ~1.5$\sigma$ feature. Interestingly, we find that only 44 out of 15635 random realizations (i.e. 0.28%) are matching both anomalies, making the LU to be a ~3$\sigma$ environment. We finally compared a mock galaxy catalogue with the observed distribution of galaxies in the LU, finding also a match to the observed factor of two over-density at ~16 Mpc as well as the observed 15% under-density at ~40 Mpc distance., Comment: 16 pages, 12 figure, accepted for publication in A&A

We use the {\sc astraeus} framework to investigate how the visibility and spatial distribution of Lyman-$\alpha$ (Ly$\alpha$) emitters (LAEs) during reionisation is sensitive to a halo mass-dependent fraction of ionising radiation escaping from the galactic environment ($f_\mathrm{esc}$) and the ionisation topology. To this end, we consider the two physically plausible bracketing scenarios of $f_\mathrm{esc}$ increasing and decreasing with rising halo mass. We derive the corresponding observed Ly$\alpha$ luminosities of galaxies for three different analytic Ly$\alpha$ line profiles and associated Ly$\alpha$ escape fraction ($f_\mathrm{esc}^\mathrm{Ly\alpha}$) models: importantly, we introduce two novel analytic Ly$\alpha$ line profile models that describe the surrounding interstellar medium (ISM) as dusty gas clumps. They are based on parameterising results from radiative transfer simulations, with one of them relating $f_\mathrm{esc}^\mathrm{Ly\alpha}$ to $f_\mathrm{esc}$ by assuming the ISM of being interspersed with low-density tunnels. Our key findings are: (i) for dusty gas clumps, the Ly$\alpha$ line profile develops from a central to double peak profile as a galaxy's halo mass increases; (ii) LAEs are galaxies with $M_h\gtrsim10^{10}M_\odot$ located in overdense and highly ionised regions; (iii) for this reason, the spatial distribution of LAEs is primarily sensitive to the global ionisation fraction and only weakly in second-order to the ionisation topology or a halo mass-dependent $f_\mathrm{esc}$; (iv) furthermore, as the observed Ly$\alpha$ luminosity functions reflect the Ly$\alpha$ emission from more massive galaxies, there is a degeneracy between the $f_\mathrm{esc}$-dependent intrinsic Ly$\alpha$ luminosity and the Ly$\alpha$ attenuation by dust in the ISM if $f_\mathrm{esc}$ does not exceed $\sim50\%$., Comment: 25 pages, 9 figures; accepted for publication in MNRAS

Recent studies based on numerical models of the Local Group predict the existence of field haloes and galaxies that have visited two distinct galaxies in the past, called Hermeian haloes. This work presents an analysis of the Hermeian haloes population in two high-resolution dark matter-only N-body simulations from the MultiDark suit (the ESMDPL, VSMDPL). Hermeian haloes make up from 0.5 to 2.5 per cent of the total number of field haloes depending on their mass. Furthermore, the results of our study suggest that at a sufficiently high resolution simulation, Hermeian haloes may be found around almost every halo, making them interesting for studies of matter exchange between galaxies. We find that about half (22 out of 49) of the selected Local Group analogues contain Hermeian haloes that passed through the haloes of both the Milky Way and M31 if the distance between the two main haloes is below 1 $h^{-1} \;\mathrm{Mpc}$; this fraction drops to one-fifth (24 out of 108) for distances of up to 1.5 $h^{-1} \;\mathrm{Mpc}$. We confirm earlier findings that unlike other field haloes, Hermeians are grouped along the line connecting the primary hosts of Local Group-like systems, which should facilitate their identification in observations. The vast majority of the Hermeian haloes, whose second target is a Milky Way analogue, are currently moving away from it with increased velocity compared to remaining field halo populations. How the cosmic web feeds halos, and fuels galaxy formation is an open question with wide implications. This study explores the mass assembly in the Local Group within the context of the local cosmography by employing simulations whose initial conditions have been constrained to reproduce the local environment. The goal of this study is to inspect whether the direction of accretion of satellites on to the Milky Way and Andromeda galaxies, is related to the cosmic web. The analysis considers the three high-resolution simulations available in the HESTIA simulation suite, as well as the derived velocity shear and tidal tensors. We notice two eras in the Local Group accretion history, delimited by an epoch around $z \approx 0.7$. We also find that satellites can travel up to $\sim 4$ Mpc, relative to their parent halo before crossing its viral radius $R_{200}$. Finally, we observe a strong alignment of the infall direction with the axis of slowest collapse $\vec{e_3}$ of both tidal and shear tensors, implying satellites of the Local Group originated from one particular region of the cosmic web and were channeled towards us via the process of accretion.This alignment is dominated by the satellites that enter during the early infall era, i.e $z>0.7$., Comment: 10 pages, 11 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

Patchy cosmic reionization resulted in the ionizing UV background asynchronous rise across the Universe. The latter might have left imprints visible in present day observations. Several numerical simulation-based studies show correlations between reionization time and overdensities and object masses today. To remove the mass from the study, as it may not be the sole important parameter, this paper focuses solely on the properties of paired halos within the same mass range as the Milky Way. For this purpose, it uses CoDaII, a fully-coupled radiation hydrodynamics reionization simulation of the local Universe. This simulation holds a halo pair representing the Local Group, in addition to other pairs, sharing similar mass, mass ratio, distance separation and isolation criteria but in other environments, alongside isolated halos within the same mass range. Investigations of the paired halo reionization histories reveal a wide diversity although always inside-out given our reionization model. Within this model, halos in a close pair tend to be reionized at the same time but being in a pair does not bring to an earlier time their mean reionization. The only significant trend is found between the total energy at z = 0 of the pairs and their mean reionization time: pairs with the smallest total energy (bound) are reionized up to 50 Myr earlier than others (unbound). Above all, this study reveals the variety of reionization histories undergone by halo pairs similar to the Local Group, that of the Local Group being far from an average one. Using the ASTRAEUS (semi-numerical rAdiative tranSfer coupling of galaxy formaTion and Reionization in N-body dark matter simUlationS) framework, we explore the impact of environmental density and radiative feedback on the assembly of galaxies and their host halos during the Epoch of Reionization. The ASTRAEUS framework allows us to study the evolution of galaxies with masses ($\rm 10^{8.2}M_\odot < M_{\rm h} < 10^{13}M_\odot$) in wide variety of environment ($-0.5 < {\rm log}(1+\delta) < 1.3$ averaged over $(2~{\rm cMpc})^3$). We find that : (i) there exists a mass- and redshift- dependent "characteristic" environment (${\rm log} (1+\delta_a(M_{\rm h}, z)) = 0.021\times (M_{\rm h}/M_\odot)^{0.16} + 0.07 z -1.12$, up to $z\sim 10$) at which galaxies are most efficient at accreting dark matter, e.g at a rate of $0.2\%$ of their mass every Myr at $z=5$; (ii) the number of minor and major mergers and their contributions to the dark matter assembly increases with halo mass at all redshifts and is mostly independent of the environment; (iii) at $z=5$ minor mergers contribute slightly more (by up to $\sim 10\%$) to the dark matter assembly while for the stellar assembly, major mergers dominate the contribution from minor mergers for $M_{\rm h}\lesssim 10^{11.5}M_\odot$ galaxies; (iv) radiative feedback quenches star formation more in low-mass galaxies ($M_{\rm h} \lesssim 10^{9.5}M_\odot$) in over-dense environments (${\rm log}(1+\delta) > 0.5$); dominated by their major branch, this yields star formation histories biased towards older ages with a slower redshift evolution., Comment: 17 pages, 15 figures, submitted to MNRAS, comments welcome !

The increase in the observed volume in cosmological surveys imposes various challenges on simulation preparations. Firstly, the volume of the simulations required increases proportionally to the observations. However, large-volume simulations are quickly becoming computationally intractable. Secondly, on-going and future large-volume survey are targeting smaller objects, e.g. emission line galaxies, compared to the earlier focus, i.e. luminous red galaxies. They require the simulations to have higher mass resolutions. In this work we present a machine learning (ML) approach to calibrate the halo catalogue of a low-resolution (LR) simulation by training with a paired high-resolution (HR) simulation with the same background white noise, thus we can build the training data by matching HR haloes to LR haloes in a one-to-one fashion. After training, the calibrated LR halo catalogue reproduces the mass-clustering relation for mass down to $2.5\times 10^{11}~h^{-1}M_\odot$ within $5~{\rm per~cent}$ at scales $k<1~h\,\rm Mpc^{-1}$. We validate the performance of different statistics including halo mass function, power spectrum, two-point correlation function, and bispectrum in both real and redshift space. Our approach generates high-resolution-like halo catalogues ($>200$ particles per halo) from low-resolution catalogues ($>25$ particles per halo) containing corrected halo masses for each object. This allows to bypass the computational burden of a large-volume real high-resolution simulation without much compromise in the mass resolution of the result. The cost of our ML approach ($\sim 1$ CPU-hour) is negligible compared to the cost of a $N$-body simulation (e.g. millions of CPU-hours), The required computing time is cut a factor of 8., Comment: 15 pages, 13 figures, Accepted for publication in MNRAS

Recent determinations of the mean free path of ionising photons (mfp) in the intergalactic medium (IGM) at $\rm z=6$ are lower than many theoretical predictions. To gain insight into this issue, we investigate the evolution of the mfp in our new massive fully coupled radiation hydrodynamics cosmological simulation of reionization: Cosmic Dawn III (CoDaIII). CoDaIII's scale ($\rm 94^3 \, cMpc^3$) and resolution ($\rm 8192^3$ grid) make it particularly suitable to study the evolution of the IGM during Reionization. The simulation was performed with RAMSES-CUDATON on Summit, and used 131072 processors coupled to 24576 GPUs, making it the largest Reionization simulation, and largest RAMSES simulation ever performed. A superior agreement with global constraints on Reionization is obtained in CoDaIII over CoDaII especially for the evolution of the neutral hydrogen fraction and the cosmic photo-ionization rate, thanks to an improved calibration, later end of reionization ($\rm z=5.6$), and higher spatial resolution. Analyzing the mfp, we find that CoDaIII reproduces the most recent observations very well, from $\rm z=6$ to $\rm z=4.6$. We show that the distribution of the mfp in CoDaIII is bimodal, with short (neutral) and long (ionized) mfp modes, respectively, due to the patchiness of reionization and the co-existence of neutral versus ionized regions during Reionization. The neutral mode peaks at sub-kpc to kpc scales of mfp, while the ionized mode peak evolves from $\rm 0.1 Mpc/h$ at $\rm z=7$ to $\sim 10$ Mpc/h at $\rm z=5.2$. Computing the mfp as the average of the ionized mode provides the best match to the recent observational determinations. In this work, the sixth of a series, we use the ASTRAEUS (semi-numerical rAdiative tranSfer coupling of galaxy formaTion and Reionization in N-body dark matter simUlationS) framework to investigate the nature of the sources that reionized the Universe. We extend ASTRAEUS, which already couples a galaxy formation semi-analytical model with a detailed semi-numerical reionization scheme, to include a model for black hole formation, growth, and the production of ionizing radiation from associated AGN (active galactic nuclei). We calibrate our fiducial AGN model to reproduce the bolometric luminosity function at z ~ 5, and explore the role of the resulting AGN population in reionizing the Universe. We find that in all the models yielding a reasonable AGN luminosity function, galaxies dominate overwhelmingly the ionizing budget during the Epoch of Reionization, with AGN accounting for 1-10% of the ionizing budget at z=6 and starting to play a role only below z < 5., Comment: 15+2 pages, 14+1 figures, 1 table. More than 50 per cent of present-day massive disc galaxies show a rotating stellar bar. Their formation and dynamics have been widely studied both numerically and observationally. Although numerical simulations in the $\Lambda$CDM cosmological framework predict the formation of such stellar components, there seems to be a tension between theoretical and observational results. Simulated bars are typically larger in size and have slower pattern speed than observed ones. We study the formation and evolution of barred galaxies, using two $\Lambda$CDM zoom-in hydrodynamical simulations of the CLUES project that follow the evolution of a cosmological Local Group-like volume. We found that our simulated bars, at $z = 0$, are both shorter and faster rotators than previous ones found in other studies on cosmological simulations alleviating the tension mentioned above. These bars match the short tail-end of the observed bar length distribution. In agreement with previous numerical works, we find that bars form in those systems where the disc self-gravity is dominant over the dark matter halo, making them unstable against bar formation. Our bars developed in the last 3-4 Gyr until they achieve their current length and strength; as bars grow, their lengths increase while their rotation speeds decrease. Despite this slowdown, at redshift $z = 0$ their rotation speeds and size match well the observational data., Comment: 11 pages, 9 figures. Accepted for publication in MNRAS

In this work, we have implemented a detailed physical model of galaxy chemical enrichment into the ${\it Astraeus}$ (semi-numerical rAdiative tranSfer coupling of galaxy formaTion and Reionization in N-body dark matter simUlationS) framework which couples galaxy formation and reionization in the first billion years. Simulating galaxies spanning over 2.5 orders of magnitude in halo mass with $M_h \sim 10^{8.9-11.5} M_\odot$ ($M_h \sim 10^{8.9-12.8} M_\odot$) at $z \sim 10 ~ (5)$, we find: (i) smooth-accretion of metal-poor gas from the intergalactic medium (IGM) plays a key role in diluting the interstellar medium (ISM) metallicity which is effectively restored due to self-enrichment from star formation; (ii) a redshift averaged gas-mass loading factor that depends on the stellar mass as $\eta_g \approx 1.38 ({M_*}/{10^{10} M_\odot})^{-0.43}$; (iii) the mass-metallicity relation is already in place at $z \sim 10$ and shows effectively no redshift evolution down to $z \sim 5$; (iv) for a given stellar mass, the metallicity decreases with an increase in the star formation rate (SFR); (v) the key properties of the gas-phase metallicity (in units of 12+log(O/H), stellar mass, SFR and redshift are linked through a high-redshift fundamental plane of metallicity (HFPZ) for which we provide a functional form; (vi) the mass-metallicity-SFR relations are effectively independent of the reionization radiative feedback model for $M_* \geq 10^{6.5} M_\odot$ galaxies; (vii) while low-mass galaxies ($M_h \leq 10^9 M_\odot$) are the key contributors to the metal budget of the IGM at early times, higher mass halos provide about 50% of the metal budget at lower-redshifts., Comment: Accepted to MNRAS

We use the \textsc{astraeus} framework, that couples an N-body simulation with a semi-analytic model for galaxy formation and a semi-numerical model for reionization, to quantify the star formation histories (SFHs) of galaxies in the first billion years. Exploring four models of radiative feedback, we fit the SFH of each galaxy at $z>5$ as $\mathrm{log}(\mathrm{SFR}(z))=-\alpha(1 + z)+\beta$; star formation is deemed stochastic if it deviates from this fit by more than $\Delta_\mathrm{SFR}=0.6\,$dex. Our key findings are: (i) The fraction of stellar mass formed and time spent in the stochastic phase decrease with increasing stellar mass and redshift $z$. While galaxies with stellar masses of $M_\star\sim10^7M_\odot$ at $z\sim5~(10)$ form $\sim70\%~(20\%)$ of their stellar mass in the stochastic phase, this reduces to $<10\%$ at all redshifts for galaxies with $M_\star > 10^{10}M_\odot$; (ii) the fractional mass assembled and lifetime spent in the stochastic phase do not significantly change with the radiative feedback model used; (iii) at all redshifts, $\alpha$ increases (decreases for the strongest radiative feedback model) with stellar mass for galaxies with $M_\star\lesssim 10^{8.5}M_\odot$ and converges to $\sim0.18$ for more massive galaxies; $\beta$ always increases with stellar mass. Our proposed fits can reliably recover the stellar masses and mass-to-light ratios for galaxies with $M_\star\sim10^{8-10.5}M_\odot$ and $M_{UV}\sim-17~{\rm to}~-23$ at $z\sim 5-9$. In this work, we use the {\sc astraeus} (seminumerical rAdiative tranSfer coupling of galaxy formaTion and Reionization in N-body dArk mattEr simUlationS) framework which couples galaxy formation and reionization in the first billion years. Exploring a number of models for reionization feedback and the escape fraction of ionizing radiation from the galactic environment ($f_\mathrm{esc}$), we quantify how the contribution of star-forming galaxies {(with halo masses $M_h>10^{8.2}$M$_\odot$)} to reionization depends on the radiative feedback model, $f_\mathrm{esc}$, and the environmental over-density. Our key findings are: (i) for constant $f_\mathrm{esc}$ models, intermediate-mass galaxies (with halo masses of $M_h\simeq10^{9-11}$M$_\odot$ and absolute UV magnitudes of $M_{UV} \sim -15$ to $-20$) in intermediate-density regions drive reionization; (ii) scenarios where $f_\mathrm{esc}$ increases with decreasing halo mass shift the galaxy population driving reionization to lower-mass galaxies ($M_h\lesssim10^{9.5}$M$_\odot$) with lower luminosities ($M_{UV} \gtrsim-16$) and over-densities; (iii) reionization imprints its topology on the ionizing emissivity of low-mass galaxies ($M_h\lesssim10^{9}$M$_\odot$) through radiative feedback. Low-mass galaxies experience a stronger suppression of star formation by radiative feedback and show lower ionizing emissivities in over-dense regions; (iv) a change in $f_\mathrm{esc}$ with galaxy properties has the largest impact on the sources of reionization and their detectability, with the radiative feedback strength and environmental over-density playing a sub-dominant role; (v) JWST-surveys (with a limiting magnitude of $M_{UV} = -16$) will be able to detect the galaxies providing $\sim 60-70\%$ ($\sim 10\%$) of reionization photons at $z=7$ for constant $f_\mathrm{esc}$ models (scenarios where $f_\mathrm{esc}$ increases with decreasing halo mass)., Comment: 14 pages, 13 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present the Hestia simulation suite: High-resolutions Environmental Simulations of The Immediate Area, a set of cosmological simulations of the Local Group. Initial conditions constrained by the observed peculiar velocity of nearby galaxies are employed to accurately simulate the local cosmography. Halo pairs that resemble the Local Group are found in low resolutions constrained, dark matter only simulations, and selected for higher resolution magneto hydrodynamic simulation using the Arepo code. Baryonic physics follows the Auriga model of galaxy formation. The simulations contain a high resolution region of 3-5 Mpc in radius from the Local Group midpoint embedded in the correct cosmographic landscape. Within this region a simulated Local Group consisting of a Milky Way and Andromeda like galaxy forms, whose description is in excellent agreement with observations. The simulated Local Group galaxies resemble the Milky Way and Andromeda in terms of their halo mass, mass ratio, stellar disc mass, morphology separation, relative velocity, rotation curves, bulge-disc morphology, satellite galaxy stellar mass function, satellite radial distribution and in some cases, the presence of a Magellanic cloud like object. The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) is expected to observe galaxies at $z>10$ that are presently inaccessible. Here, we use a self-consistent empirical model, the UniverseMachine, to generate mock galaxy catalogues and lightcones over the redshift range $z=0-15$. These data include realistic galaxy properties (stellar masses, star formation rates, and UV luminosities), galaxy-halo relationships, and galaxy-galaxy clustering. Mock observables are also provided for different model parameters spanning observational uncertainties at $z<10$. We predict that Cycle 1 JWST surveys will very likely detect galaxies with $M_*>10^7 M_\odot$ and/or $M_{1500}<-17$ out to at least $z\sim 13.5$. Number density uncertainties at $z>12$ expand dramatically, so efforts to detect $z>12$ galaxies will provide the most valuable constraints on galaxy formation models. The faint-end slopes of the stellar mass/luminosity functions at a given mass/luminosity threshold steepen as redshift increases. This is because observable galaxies are hosted by haloes in the exponentially falling regime of the halo mass function at high redshifts. Hence, these faint-end slopes are robustly predicted to become shallower below current observable limits ($M_\ast < 10^7M_\odot$ or $M_\mathrm{1500}>-17$). For reionization models, extrapolating luminosity functions with a constant faint-end slope from $M_{1500}=-17$ down to $M_{1500}=-12$ gives the most reasonable upper limit for the total UV luminosity and cosmic star formation rate up to $z\sim 12$. We compare to three other empirical models and one semi-analytic model, showing that the range of predicted observables from our approach encompasses predictions from other techniques. Galaxy clusters can play a key role in modern cosmology provided their evolution is properly understood. However, observed clusters give us only a single timeframe of their dynamical state. Therefore, finding present observable data of clusters that are well correlated to their assembly history constitutes an inestimable tool for cosmology. Former studies correlating environmental descriptors of clusters to their formation history are dominated by halo mass - environment relations. This paper presents a mass-free correlation between the present neighbor distribution of cluster-size halos and the latter mass assembly history. From the Big Multidark simulation, we extract two large samples of random halos with masses ranging from Virgo to Coma cluster sizes. Additionally, to find the main environmental culprit for the formation history of the Virgo cluster, we compare the Virgo-size halos to 200 Virgo-like halos extracted from simulations that resemble the local Universe. The number of neighbors at different cluster-centric distances permits discriminating between clusters with different mass accretion histories. Similarly to Virgo-like halos, clusters with numerous neighbors within a distance of about 2 times their virial radius experience a transition at z~1 between an active period of mass accretion, relative to the mean, and a quiet history. On the contrary, clusters with few neighbors share an opposite trend: from passive to active assembly histories. Additionally, clusters with massive companions within about 4 times their virial radius tend to have recent active merging histories. Next generation telescopes such as the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) and the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope (NGRST) will enable us to study the first billion years of our Universe in unprecedented detail. In this work we use the ASTRAEUS (semi-numerical rAdiative tranSfer coupling of galaxy formaTion and Reionization in N-body dArk mattEr simUlationS) framework, that couples galaxy formation and reionization (for a wide range of reionization feedback models), to estimate the cosmic variance expected in the UV Luminosity Function (UV LF) and the Stellar Mass Function (SMF) in JWST surveys. We find that different reionization scenarios play a minor role in the cosmic variance. Most of the cosmic variance is completely driven by the underlying density field and increases above $100\%$ for ${\rm M}_{\rm UV} \sim -17.5 (-20)$ at $z =12 (6)$ for the JADES-deep survey (the deep JWST Advanced Extragalactic Survey with an area of 46 arcmin$^2$); the cosmic variance decreases with an increasing survey area roughly independently of redshift. We find that the faint-end (${\rm M}_{\rm UV} > -17$) slope of the Lyman Break Galaxies (LBGs) UV LF becomes increasingly shallower with increasing reionization feedback and show how JWST observations will be able to distinguish between different models of reionization feedback at $z>9$, even accounting for cosmic variance. We also show the environments (in terms of density and ionization fields)of Lyman Break Galaxies during the EoR, finding that the underlying over-density and ionization fraction scale positively with the UV luminosity. We introduce a new self-consistent model of galaxy evolution and reionization, ASTRAEUS (semi-numerical rAdiative tranSfer coupling of galaxy formaTion and Reionization in N-body dArk mattEr simUlationS), which couples a state-of-the-art N-body simulation with the semi-analytical galaxy evolution DELPHI and the semi-numerical reionization scheme CIFOG. ASTRAEUS includes all the key processes of galaxy formation and evolution (including accretion, mergers, supernova and radiative feedback) and follows the time and spatial evolution of the ionized regions in the intergalactic medium (IGM). Importantly, it explores different radiative feedback models that cover the physically plausible parameter space, ranging from a weak and delayed to a strong and immediate reduction of gas mass available for star formation. From our simulation suite that covers the different radiative feedback prescriptions and ionization topologies, we find that radiative feedback continuously reduces star formation in galaxies with $M_h<10^{9.5}M_{\odot}$ upon local reionization; larger mass halos are unaffected even for the strongest and immediate radiative feedback cases during reionization. For this reason, the ionization topologies of different radiative feedback scenarios differ only on scales smaller than $1-2$Mpc, and significant deviations are only found when physical parameters (e.g. the escape fraction of ionizing photons) are altered based on galactic properties. Finally, we find observables (the ultra-violet luminosity function, stellar mass function, reionization histories and ionization topologies) are hardly affected by the choice of the used stellar population synthesis models that either model single stars or binaries., Comment: 26 pages, 16 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

Cosmic Dawn ("CoDa") II yields the first statistically-meaningful determination of the relative contribution to reionization by galaxies of different halo mass, from a fully-coupled radiation-hydrodynamics simulation of the epoch of reionization large enough ($\sim$ 100 Mpc) to model global reionization while resolving the formation of all galactic halos above $\sim 10^8 M_\odot$. Cell transmission inside high-mass haloes is bi-modal -- ionized cells are transparent, while neutral cells absorb the photons their stars produce - and the halo escape fraction $f_{esc}$ reflects the balance of star formation rate ("SFR") between these modes. The latter is increasingly prevalent at higher halo mass, driving down $f_{esc}$ (we provide analytical fits to our results), whereas halo escape luminosity, proportional to $f_{esc} \times$SFR, increases with mass. Haloes with dark matter masses within $6.10^{8} M_\odot < M_h < 3.10^{10} M_\odot$ produce $\sim 80$% of the escaping photons at z=7, when the Universe is 50% ionized, making them the main drivers of cosmic reionization. Less massive haloes, though more numerous, have low SFRs and contribute less than 10% of the photon budget then, despite their high $f_{esc}$. High mass haloes are too few and too opaque, contributing $<10$% despite their high SFRs. The dominant mass range is lower (higher) at higher (lower) redshift, as mass function and reionization advance together (e.g. at z$=8.5$, x$_{\rm HI}=0.9$, $M_h < 5.10^9 M_\odot$ haloes contributed $\sim$80%). In this work an ensemble of simulated Local Group analogues is used to constrain the properties of the mass assembly history of the Milky Way (MW) and Andromeda (M31) galaxies. These objects have been obtained using the constrained simulation technique, which ensures that simulated LGs live within a large scale environment akin to the observed one. Our results are compared against a standard $\Lambda$ Cold Dark Matter ($\Lambda$CDM) series of simulations which use the same cosmological parameters. This allows us to single out the effects of the constraints on the results. We find that (a) the median constrained merging histories for M31 and MW live above the standard ones at the 1-$\sigma$ level, (b) the median formation time takes place $\approx$ 0.5 Gyr earlier than unconstrained values, while the latest major merger happens on average 1.5 Gyr earlier and (c) the probability for both LG haloes to have experienced their last major merger in the first half of the history of the Universe is $\approx$ 50% higher for the constrained pairs. These results have been estimated to be significant at the 99% confidence level by means of a Kolmogorov-Simirnov test. These results suggest that the particular environment in which the Milky Way and Andromeda form plays a role in shaping their properties, and favours earlier formation and last major merger time values in agreement with other observational and theoretical considerations., Comment: 10 pages, 3 figures. To date at least 10 highly flattened planes of dwarf galaxies are claimed to have been discovered in the Local Universe. The origin of these planes of galaxies remains unknown. One suggestion is that they are related to the large-scale structure of the cosmic web. A recent study found that the normal of a number of these dwarf galaxy planes are very closely aligned with the eigenvector of the shear tensor corresponding to the direction of greatest collapse obtained by reconstructing the full velocity field in the linear regime. Here we extend that work by both considering an additional 5 planes beyond the 5 examined previously and by examining the alignment with respect to the quasi-linear field, a more sophisticated reconstruction, which is a better approximation on smaller (quasi-linear) scales. Our analysis recovers the previous result while not finding a significantly tight alignment with the additional 5 planes. However, the additional 5 planes normals also do not appear to be randomly oriented. We conclude that this could either be due to the normals of the new planes being poorly defined and described; the quasi-linear field at those locations being poorly constrained; or different formation mechanisms for the orientation of planes of dwarf galaxies., Comment: 9 pages, 3 figures, 1 table

Galaxy clustering measurements can be used to constrain many aspects of galaxy evolution, including galaxy host halo masses, satellite quenching efficiencies, and merger rates. We simulate JWST galaxy clustering measurements at z$\sim$4$-$10 by utilizing mock galaxy samples produced by an empirical model, the UniverseMachine. We also adopt the survey footprints and typical depths of the planned joint NIRCam and NIRSpec Guaranteed Time Observation program planned for Cycle 1 to generate realistic JWST survey realizations and to model high-redshift galaxy selection completeness. We find that galaxy clustering will be measured with $\gtrsim$5$\sigma$ significance at z$\sim$4$-$10. Halo mass precisions resulting from Cycle 1 angular clustering measurements will be $\sim$0.2 dex for faint (-18 $\gtrsim$ $\mathit{M}_{\mathrm{UV}}^{ }$ $\gtrsim$ -19) galaxies at z$\sim$4$-$10 as well as $\sim$0.3 dex for bright ($\mathit{M}_{\mathrm{UV}}^{ }$ $\sim$ -20) galaxies at z$\sim$4$-$7. Dedicated spectroscopic follow-up over $\sim$150 arcmin$^2$ would improve these precisions by $\sim$0.1 dex by removing chance projections and low-redshift contaminants. Future JWST observations will therefore provide the first constraints on the stellar-halo mass relation in the epoch of reionization and substantially clarify how this relation evolves at z$>$4. We also find that $\sim$1000 individual satellites will be identifiable at z$\sim$4$-$8 with JWST, enabling strong tests of satellite quenching evolution beyond currently available data (z$\lesssim$2). Finally, we find that JWST observations can measure the evolution of galaxy major merger pair fractions at z$\sim$4$-$8 with $\sim$0.1$-$0.2 dex uncertainties. It is well known that satellite galaxies are not isotropically distributed among their host galaxies as suggested by most interpretations of the $\Lambda$CDM model. One type of anisotropy recently detected in the SDSS (and seen when examining the distribution of satellites in the Local Group and in the Centaurus group) is a tendency to be so-called "lopsided". Namely, in pairs of galaxies (like Andromeda and the Milky Way) the satellites are more likely to inhabit the region in between the pair, rather than on opposing sides. Although recent studies found a similar set up when comparing pairs of galaxies in $\Lambda$CDM simulations indicating that such a set up is not inconsistent with $\Lambda$CDM, the origin has yet to be explained. Here we examine the origin of such lopsided setups by first identifying such distributions in pairs of galaxies in numerical cosmological simulations, and then tracking back the orbital trajectories of satellites (which at $z=0$ display the effect). We report two main results: first, the lopsided distribution was stronger in the past and weakens towards $z=0$. Second, the weakening of the signal is due to the interaction of satellite galaxies with the pair. Finally, we show that the $z=0$ signal is driven primarily by satellites that are on first approach, who have yet to experience a "flyby". This suggests that the signal seen in the observations is also dominated by dynamically young accretion events., Comment: 10 pages, 11 figures

We simulate the propagation of cosmic rays at ultra-high energies, $\gtrsim 10^{18}$ eV, in models of extragalactic magnetic fields in constrained simulations of the local Universe. We investigate the impact of different magneto-genesis scenarios, both, primordial and astrophysical, on the propagation of cosmic rays. Our study shows that different scenarios of magneto-genesis do not have a large impact on the anisotropy measurements. The distribution of nearby sources causes anisotropy at very high energies, independent of the magnetic field model. We compare our results to the dipole signal measured by the Pierre Auger Observatory. All our models could reproduce the observed dipole amplitude with a pure iron injection composition. This is due to clustering of secondary nuclei in direction of nearby sources of heavy nuclei. Cosmic Dawn II (CoDa II) is a new, fully-coupled radiation-hydrodynamics simulation of cosmic reionization and galaxy formation and their mutual impact, to redshift $z < 6$. With $4096^3$ particles and cells in a 94 Mpc box, it is large enough to model global reionization and its feedback on galaxy formation while resolving all haloes above $10^8$ M$_{\odot}$. Using the same hybrid CPU-GPU code RAMSES-CUDATON as CoDa I in Ocvirk et al. (2016), CoDa II modified and re-calibrated the subgrid star-formation algorithm, making reionization end earlier, at $z \gtrsim 6$, thereby better matching the observations of intergalactic Lyman-alpha opacity from quasar spectra and electron-scattering optical depth from cosmic microwave background fluctuations. CoDa II predicts a UV continuum luminosity function in good agreement with observations of high-z galaxies, especially at $z = 6$. As in CoDa I, reionization feedback suppresses star formation in haloes below $\sim 2 \times 10^9$ M$_{\odot}$, though suppression here is less severe, a possible consequence of modifying the star-formation algorithm. Suppression is environment-dependent, occurring earlier (later) in overdense (underdense) regions, in response to their local reionization times. Using a constrained realization of $\Lambda$CDM constructed from galaxy survey data to reproduce the large-scale structure and major objects of the present-day Local Universe, CoDa II serves to model both global and local reionization. We introduce the THE THREE HUNDRED project, an endeavour to model 324 large galaxy clusters with full-physics hydrodynamical re-simulations. Here we present the data set and study the differences to observations for fundamental galaxy cluster properties and scaling relations. We find that the modelled galaxy clusters are generally in reasonable agreement with observations with respect to baryonic fractions and gas scaling relations at redshift z = 0. However, there are still some (model-dependent) differences, such as central galaxies being too massive, and galaxy colours (g - r) being bluer (about 0.2 dex lower at the peak position) than in observations. The agreement in gas scaling relations down to 10^{13} h^{-1} M_{\odot} between the simulations indicates that particulars of the sub-grid modelling of the baryonic physics only has a weak influence on these relations. We also include - where appropriate - a comparison to three semi-analytical galaxy formation models as applied to the same underlying dark-matter-only simulation. The local Universe provides a unique opportunity for testing cosmology and theories of structure formation. To facilitate this opportunity we present a new method for the reconstruction of the quasi-linear matter density and velocity fields from galaxy peculiar velocities and apply it to the Cosmicflows-2 data. The method consists of constructing an ensemble of cosmological simulations, constrained by the standard cosmological model and the observational data. The quasi-linear density field is the geometric mean and variance of the fully non-linear density fields of the simulations. The main nearby clusters (Virgo, Centaurus, Coma), superclusters (Shapley, Perseus-Pisces) and voids (Dipole Repeller) are robustly reconstructed. Galaxies are born biased with respect to the underlying dark matter distribution. Using our quasi-linear framework we demonstrate that the luminosity-weighted density field derived from the 2M++ redshift compilations is non-linearly biased with respect to the matter density field. Photoheating associated with reionization suppressed star formation in low-mass galaxies. Reionization was inhomogeneous, however, affecting different regions at different times. To establish the causal connection between reionization and suppression, we must take this local variation into account. We analyze the results of CoDa (`Cosmic Dawn') I, the first fully-coupled radiation-hydrodynamical simulation of reionization and galaxy formation in the Local Universe, in a volume large enough to model reionization globally but with enough resolving power to follow all atomic-cooling galactic halos in that volume. For every halo identified at a given time, we find the redshift at which the surrounding IGM reionized, along with its instantaneous star formation rate (`SFR') and baryonic gas-to-dark matter ratio ($M_\text{gas}/M_\text{DM}$). The average SFR per halo with $M < 10^9 \text{ M}_\odot$ was steady in regions not yet reionized, but declined sharply following local reionization. For $M > 10^{10} \text{ M}_\odot$, this SFR continued through local reionization, increasing with time, instead. For $10^9 < M < 10^{10} \text{ M}_\odot$, the SFR generally increased modestly through reionization, followed by a modest decline. In general, halo SFRs were higher for regions that reionized earlier. A similar pattern was found for $M_\text{gas}/M_\text{DM}$, which declined sharply following local reionization for $M < 10^9 \text{ M}_\odot$. Local reionization time correlates with local matter overdensity, which determines the local rates of structure formation and ionizing photon consumption. Today's galaxies experienced cosmic reionization at different times in different locations. For the first time, reionization ($50\%$ ionized) redshifts, $z_R$, at the location of their progenitors are derived from new, fully-coupled radiation-hydrodynamics simulation of galaxy formation and reionization at $z > 6$, matched to N-body simulation to z = 0. Constrained initial conditions were chosen to form the well-known structures of the local universe, including the Local Group and Virgo, in a (91 Mpc)$^3$ volume large enough to model both global and local reionization. Reionization simulation CoDa I-AMR, by CPU-GPU code EMMA, used (2048)$^3$ particles and (2048)$^3$ initial cells, adaptively-refined, while N-body simulation CoDa I-DM2048, by Gadget2, used (2048)$^3$ particles, to find reionization times for all galaxies at z = 0 with masses $M(z=0)\ge 10^8 M_\odot$. Galaxies with $M(z=0) \gtrsim 10^{11} M_\odot$ reionized earlier than the universe as a whole, by up to $\sim$ 500 Myrs, with significant scatter. For Milky-Way-like galaxies, $z_R$ ranged from 8 to 15. Galaxies with $M(z=0) \lesssim 10^{11} M_\odot$ typically reionized as late or later than globally-averaged $50\%$ reionization at $\langle z_R\rangle =7.8$, in neighborhoods where reionization was completed by external radiation. The spread of reionization times within galaxies was sometimes as large as the galaxy-to-galaxy scatter. The Milky Way and M31 reionized earlier than global reionization but later than typical for their mass, neither dominated by external radiation. We present results from the semi-analytic model of galaxy formation SAG applied on the MultiDark simulation MDPL2. SAG features an updated supernova (SN) feedback scheme and a robust modelling of the environmental effects on satellite galaxies. This incorporates a gradual starvation of the hot gas halo driven by the action of ram pressure stripping (RPS), that can affect the cold gas disc, and tidal stripping (TS), which can act on all baryonic components. Galaxy orbits of orphan satellites are integrated providing adequate positions and velocities for the estimation of RPS and TS. The star formation history and stellar mass assembly of galaxies are sensitive to the redshift dependence implemented in the SN feedback model. We discuss a variant of our model that allows to reconcile the predicted star formation rate density at $z \gtrsim 3$ with the observed one, at the expense of an excess in the faint end of the stellar mass function at $z=2$. The fractions of passive galaxies as a function of stellar mass, halo mass and the halo-centric distances are consistent with observational measurements. The model also reproduces the evolution of the main sequence of star forming central and satellite galaxies. The similarity between them is a result of the gradual starvation of the hot gas halo suffered by satellites, in which RPS plays a dominant role. RPS of the cold gas does not affect the fraction of quenched satellites but it contributes to reach the right atomic hydrogen gas content for more massive satellites ($M_{\star}\gtrsim 10^{10}\,{\rm M}_{\odot}$)., Comment: New figure added (Fig. 5); section 5 modified accordingly. We present the public release of the MultiDark-Galaxies: three distinct galaxy catalogues derived from one of the Planck cosmology MultiDark simulations (i.e. MDPL2, with a volume of (1 Gpc/$h$)$^{3}$ and mass resolution of $1.5 \times 10^{9} M_{\odot}/h$) by applying the semi-analytic models GALACTICUS, SAG, and SAGE to it. We compare the three models and their conformity with observational data for a selection of fundamental properties of galaxies like stellar mass function, star formation rate, cold gas fractions, and metallicities - noting that they sometimes perform differently reflecting model designs and calibrations. We have further selected galaxy subsamples of the catalogues by number densities in stellar mass, cold gas mass, and star formation rate in order to study the clustering statistics of galaxies. We show that despite different treatment of orphan galaxies, i.e. galaxies that lost their dark-matter host halo due to the finite mass resolution of the N-body simulation or tidal stripping, the clustering signal is comparable, and reproduces the observations in all three models - in particular when selecting samples based upon stellar mass. Our catalogues provide a powerful tool to study galaxy formation within a volume comparable to those probed by on-going and future photometric and redshift surveys. We simulate the propagation of cosmic rays at ultra-high energies, $\gtrsim 10^{18}$ eV, in models of extragalactic magnetic fields in constrained simulations of the local Universe. We use constrained initial conditions with the cosmological magnetohydrodynamics code {\sc ENZO}. The resulting models of the distribution of magnetic fields in the local Universe are used in the \crpropa code to simulate the propagation of ultra-high energy cosmic rays. We investigate the impact of six different magneto-genesis scenarios, both primordial and astrophysical, on the propagation of cosmic rays over cosmological distances. Moreover, we study the influence of different source distributions around the Milky Way. Our study shows that different scenarios of magneto-genesis do not have a large impact on the anisotropy measurements of ultra-high energy cosmic rays. However, at high energies above the GZK-limit, there is anisotropy caused by the distribution of nearby sources, independent of the magnetic field model. This provides a chance to identify cosmic ray sources with future full-sky measurements and high number statistics at the highest energies. Finally, we compare our results to the dipole signal measured by the Pierre Auger Observatory. All our source models and magnetic field models could reproduce the observed dipole amplitude with a pure iron injection composition. Our results indicate that the dipole is observed due to clustering of secondary nuclei in direction of nearby sources of heavy nuclei. The influence of the large scale structure on host halos may be studied by examining the angular infall pattern of subhalos. In particular, since warm and cold dark matter cosmologies predict different abundances and internal properties for halos at the low mass end of the mass function, it is interesting to examine if there are differences in how these low mass halos are accreted. The accretion events are defined as the moment a halo becomes a substructure, namely when it crosses its host's virial radius. We quantify the cosmic web at each point by the shear tensor and examine where, with respect to its eigenvectors, such accretion events occur in cold ($\Lambda$CDM) and warm (1keV sterile neutrino WDM) dark matter cosmological models. We find that the CDM and WDM subhalos are preferentially accreted along the principal axis of the shear tensor corresponding to the direction of weakest collapse. The beaming strength is modulated by the host and subhalo masses and by the redshift at which the accretion event occurs. Although strongest for the most massive hosts and subhalos at high redshift, the preferential infall is found to be always aligned with the axis of weakest collapse, thus we say that it has universal nature. We compare the strength of beaming in the WDM cosmology with the one found in the $\Lambda$CDM scenario. While the main findings remain the same, the accretion in the WDM model for the most massive host halos appears more beamed than in $\Lambda$CDM cosmology across all the redshifts., Comment: 12 pages, 9 figures

The Zone of Avoidance (ZOA), whose emptiness is an artifact of our Galaxy dust, has been challenging observers as well as theorists for many years. Multiple attempts have been made on the observational side to map this region in order to better understand the local flows. On the theoretical side, however, this region is often simply statistically populated with structures but no real attempt has been made to confront theoretical and observed matter distributions. This paper takes a step forward using constrained realizations of the local Universe shown to be perfect substitutes of local Universe-like simulations for smoothed high density peak studies. Far from generating completely `random' structures in the ZOA, the reconstruction technique arranges matter according to the surrounding environment of this region. More precisely, the mean distributions of structures in a series of constrained and random realizations differ: while densities annihilate each other when averaging over 200 random realizations, structures persist when summing 200 constrained realizations. The probability distribution function of ZOA grid cells to be highly overdense is a Gaussian with a 15% mean in the random case, while that of the constrained case exhibits large tails. This implies that areas with the largest probabilities host most likely a structure. Comparisons between these predictions and observations, like those of the Puppis 3 cluster, show a remarkable agreement and allow us to assert the presence of the, recently highlighted by observations, Vela supercluster at about 180 Mpc/h, right behind the thickest dust layers of our Galaxy., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS, 11 pages, 6 figures, 1 table

Observations of the Milky Way (MW), M31, and their vicinity, known as the Local Group (LG), can provide clues about the sources of reionization. We present a suite of radiative transfer simulations based on initial conditions provided by the Constrained Local UniversE Simulations (CLUES) project that are designed to recreate the Local Universe, including a realistic MW-M31 pair and a nearby Virgo. Our box size (91 Mpc) is large enough to incorporate the relevant sources of ionizing photons for the LG. We employ a range of source models, mimicking the potential effects of radiative feedback for dark matter haloes between $10^{8}-10^{9}$ M$_{\odot}$. Although the LG mostly reionizes in an inside-out fashion, the final 40 per cent of its ionization shows some outside influence. For the LG satellites, we find no evidence that their redshift of reionization is related to the present-day mass of the satellite or the distance from the central galaxy. We find that less than 20 per cent of present-day satellites for MW and M31 have undergone any star formation prior to the end of global reionization. Approximately five per cent of these satellites could be classified as fossils, meaning the majority of star formation occurred at these early times. The more massive satellites have more cumulative star formation prior to the end of global reionization, but the scatter is significant, especially at the low-mass end. The Wiener Filter (WF) technique enables the reconstruction of density and velocity fields from observed radial peculiar velocities. This paper aims at identifying the optimal design of peculiar velocity surveys within the WF framework. The prime goal is to test the dependence of the quality of the reconstruction on the distribution and nature of data points. Mock datasets, extending to 250 Mpc/h, are drawn from a constrained simulation that mimics the local Universe to produce realistic mock catalogs. Reconstructed fields obtained with these mocks are compared to the reference simulation. Comparisons, including residual distributions, cell-to-cell and bulk velocities, imply that the presence of field data points is essential to properly measure the flows. The fields reconstructed from mocks that consist only of galaxy cluster data points exhibit poor quality bulk velocities. In addition, the quality of the reconstruction depends strongly on the grouping of individual data points into single points to suppress virial motions in high density regions. Conversely, the presence of a Zone of Avoidance hardly affects the reconstruction. For a given number of data points, a uniform sample does not score any better than a sample with decreasing number of data points with the distance. The best reconstructions are obtained with a grouped survey containing field galaxies: Assuming no error, they differ from the simulated field by less than 100 km/s up to the extreme edge of the catalogs or up to a distance of three times the mean distance of data points for non-uniform catalogs. The mass of the Local Group (LG) is a crucial parameter for galaxy formation theories. However, its observational determination is challenging - its mass budget is dominated by dark matter which cannot be directly observed. To meet this end the posterior distributions of the LG and its massive constituents have been constructed by means of constrained and random cosmological simulations. Two priors are assumed - the LCDM model that is used to set up the simulations and a LG model,which encodes the observational knowledge of the LG and is used to select LG-like objects from the simulations. The constrained simulations are designed to reproduce the local cosmography as it is imprinted onto the Cosmicflows-2 database of velocities. Several prescriptions are used to define the LG model, focusing in particular on different recent estimates of the tangential velocity of M31. It is found that (a) different $v_{tan}$ choices affect the peak mass values up to a factor of 2, and change mass ratios of $M_{M31}$ to $M_{MW}$ by up to 20%; (b) constrained simulations yield more sharply peaked posterior distributions compared with the random ones; (c) LG mass estimates are found to be smaller than those found using the timing argument; (d) preferred MW masses lie in the range of $(0.6 - 0.8)\times10^{12} M_{\odot}$ whereas (e) $M_{M31}$ is found to vary between $(1.0 - 2.0)\times10^{12} M_{\odot}$, with a strong dependence on the $v_{tan}$ values used., Comment: 10 pages, 1 figure, 6 tables. We present the measurements of the luminosity-dependent redshift-space three-point correlation functions (3PCFs) for the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) DR7 Main galaxy sample. We compare the 3PCF measurements to the predictions from three different halo and subhalo models. One is the halo occupation distribution (HOD) model and the other two are extensions of the subhalo abundance matching (SHAM) model by allowing the central and satellite galaxies to have different occupation distributions in the host halos and subhalos. Parameters in all the models are chosen to best describe the projected and redshift-space two-point correlation functions (2PCFs) of the same set of galaxies. All three model predictions agree well with the 3PCF measurements for the most luminous galaxy sample, while the HOD model better performs in matching the 3PCFs of fainter samples (with luminosity threshold below $L^*$), which is similar in trend to the case of fitting the 2PCFs. The decomposition of the model 3PCFs into contributions from different types of galaxy triplets shows that on small scales the dependence of the 3PCFs on triangle shape is driven by nonlinear redshift-space distortion (and not by the intrinsic halo shape) while on large scales it reflects the filamentary structure. The decomposition also reveals more detailed differences in the three models, which are related to the radial distribution, the mean occupation function, and the velocity distribution of satellite galaxies inside halos. While the Virgo cluster is the nearest galaxy cluster and therefore the best observed one, little is known about its formation history. In this paper, a set of cosmological simulations that resemble the Local Universe is used to shed the first light on this mystery. The initial conditions for these simulations are constrained with galaxy peculiar velocities of the second catalog of the Cosmicflows project using algorithms developed within the Constrained Local UniversE Simulation project. Boxes of 500 Mpc/h on a side are set to run a series of dark matter only constrained simulations. In each simulation, a unique dark matter halo can be reliably identified as Virgo's counterpart. The properties of these Virgo halos are in agreement at a 10-20% level with the global properties of the observed Virgo cluster. Their zero-velocity masses agree at one-sigma with the observational mass estimate. In all the simulations, the matter falls onto the Virgo objects along a preferential direction that corresponds to the observational filament and the slowest direction of collapse. A study of the mass accretion history of the Virgo candidates reveals the most likely formation history of the Virgo cluster, namely a quiet accretion over the last 7 Gigayears., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS, 10 pages, 10 figures

Determining the precise value of the tangential component of the velocity of M31 is a non trivial astrophysical issue, that relies on complicated modeling. This has recently lead to con- flicting estimates, obtained by several groups that used different methodologies and assump- tions. This letter addresses the issue by computing a Bayesian posterior distribution function of this quantity, in order to measure the compatibility of those estimates with LambdaCDM. This is achieved using an ensemble of local group (LG) look-alikes collected from a set of Con- strained Simulations (CSs) of the local Universe, and a standard unconstrained LambdaCDM. The latter allows us to build a control sample of LG-like pairs and to single out the influence of the environment in our results. We find that neither estimate is at odds with LambdaCDM; how- ever, whereas CSs favour higher values of vtan , the reverse is true for estimates based on LG samples gathered from unconstrained simulations, overlooking the environmental element, Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures, accepted for publications in MNRAS Letters

The halo shape plays a central role in determining important observational properties of the haloes such as mass, concentration and lensing cross-sections. The triaxiality of lensing galaxy clusters has a substantial impact on the distribution of the largest Einstein radii, while weak lensing techniques are sensitive to the intrinsic halo ellipticity. In this work, we provide scaling relations for the shapes of dark matter haloes as a function of mass (peak height) and redshift over more than four orders of magnitude in halo masses, namely from $10^{11.5}$ to $10^{15.8}~h^{-1}~$M$_\odot$. We have analysed four dark matter only simulations from the MultiDark cosmological simulation suite with more than 56 billion particles within boxes of 4.0, 2.5, 1.0 and 0.4 $h^{-1}$Gpc size assuming \textit{Planck} cosmology. The dark matter haloes have been identified in the simulations using the {\sc rockstar} halo finder, which also determines the axis ratios in terms of the diagonalization of the inertia tensor. In order to infer the shape for a hypothetical halo of a given mass at a given redshift, we provide fitting functions to the minor-to-major and intermediate-to-major axis ratios as a function of the peak height., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS (14 pages, 13 figures).
