Distributed acoustic sensing (DAS) measurement, which uses a fiber-optic cable as a strain sensor, allows us spatially high-density observation than seismometers; therefore, DAS has been widely used for seismic observations recently. We conduct DAS measurement with an offshore fiber-optic cable off the Cape Muroto, along the Nankai Trough in southwest Japan. This area is a typical area with adjacent occurrences of slow and megathrust earthquakes. As the relationship between slow and megathrust earthquakes is pointed out (e.g., Obara and Kato, 2016), monitoring of slow earthquakes with a high resolution is necessary to understand tectonic conditions in subduction zones. Although many studies have observed regular earthquakes by DAS measurement recently, there are few studies which observed slow earthquakes with DAS. We observed shallow tremors, a type of slow earthquake in a frequency range of 2–10 Hz, by DAS measurement.We detected 28 shallow tremor signals off Cape Muroto by using DAS from January 30 to February 8, 2022. The signals of these tremors were also observed in broadband seismograms of the Dense Oceanfloor Network system for Earthquake and Tsunami (DONET) data. We manually picked the arrivals of the tremor signals in root-mean-square envelopes of DAS and DONET waveforms and located the tremor events at the point where the residual between synthetic and observed arrival times is the least by the grid search. Synthetic travel times were calculated based on a one-dimensional S-wave velocity structure model representing the area near the Nankai Trough (Nakano et al., 2013). The tremors were located mainly around 135.7ºE and 33.8ºN, which corresponds to a subducted seamount peak indicated by Nakamura et al. (2022).The amplitude of tremor signals in the frequency range of 2–10 Hz observed in a DAS channel is 1–2 nstrain. Assuming a plane wave, the velocity waveforms can be calculated by multiplying the apparent velocity by the strain waveform (e.g., Daley et al., 2016). The apparent velocity of the tremor signal propagation was estimated to be ~4 km/s in DAS data; therefore, the amplitudes of the velocities were estimated to be 4000–8000 nm/s, which is similar to or one order larger than that in broadband seismometers of the nearest DONET stations. In detail, tremor signals in DAS data are composed of several phases with variable apparent velocities, and these phases are coherent within only 50–100 m. Generally, the duration of tremors observed in the DAS channels (40–60 s) is longer than that observed in velocity waveforms of DONET broadband seismometers (30–50 s). Comparing the waveforms of regular earthquakes in DAS and ocean bottom seismometers (OBSs) at the same location in December 2019, we found that the duration of the regular earthquakes in the DAS strain waveform is also longer than that in the OBS velocity waveform. The difference in waveform characteristics may be caused by that in the sensitivity of the incident angle between DAS and OBS.

Plate bending-related normal faults (i.e. bend-faults) develop at the outer trench-slope of the oceanic plate incoming into the subduction zone. Numerous geophysical studies and numerical simulations suggest that bend-faults play a key role by providing pathways for seawater to flow into the oceanic crust and the upper mantle, thereby promoting hydration of the oceanic plate. However, deep penetration of seawater along bend-faults remains controversial because fluids that have percolated down into the mantle are difficult to detect. This report presents anomalously high helium isotope (3He/4He) ratios in sediment pore water and seismic reflection data which suggest fluid infiltration into the upper mantle and subsequent outflow through bend-faults across the outer slope of the Japan trench. The 3He/4He and 4He/20Ne ratios at sites near-trench bend-faults, which are close to the isotopic ratios of bottom seawater, are almost constant with depth, supporting local seawater inflow. Our findings provide the first reported evidence for a potentially large-scale active hydrothermal circulation system through bend-faults across the Moho (crust-mantle boundary) in and out of the oceanic lithospheric mantle.

SUMMARY The 2011 Mw 9.0 Tohoku-oki earthquake ruptured the subduction megathrust fault in the central Japan Trench. We investigated the aftershock activity in the southern Japan Trench to the south of the main rupture area using ocean bottom seismographs deployed both landward and seaward of the trench. In the trench-outer rise region seaward of the trench axis, we identified several ∼100-km-long linear earthquake trends both parallel and oblique to the southern Japan Trench. The earthquake trend oblique to the southern Japan Trench is a southward extension of the trench-parallel linear earthquake trend in the central to northern Japan Trench. The trench-parallel normal-faults in the trench-outer rise region could extend linearly, despite the change of the trench strike from N–S to NNE–SSW to the south of the main rupture area. Normal-faults oblique to the trench should be considered as substantial parts of large intraplate normal-faulting earthquakes. In addition, intraplate seismicity coinciding with the lower velocity oceanic mantle suggest that the structure heterogeneity would be indicative of normal-faults extending into the mantle. In the trench landward area, earthquake activity showed along-trench variations. Earthquakes along the shallow megathrust interface near the trench were observed south of 37°N. These shallow near-trench regular earthquakes, which are located close to the episodic tremors and temporally correlated with the tremor activities, suggest that the afterslip on the plate interface likely extended to the shallow plate interface close to the trench axis. Smaller spatial scale structure heterogeneity, such as the thickness variation in the channel-like low-velocity sedimentary unit, likely relate to the proximity of the regular earthquakes and slow slip which results in the formation of diverse slip behaviours in the shallow subduction zone of the southern Japan Trench.

The NZ3D OBS experiment performed in 2017-2018 in the northern Hikurangi margin off the east coast of North Island, New Zealand, provided the highest-resolution seismic refraction/wide‐angle reflection data with multi-azimuth ray coverage in subduction zones to date (Arai et al., 2020). The study area extending 60 km in the trench-normal direction and 14 km in the trench-parallel direction covers source regions of a variety of slow earthquake phenomena, such as shallow slow slip events and tectonic tremor (e.g., Wallace, 2020), and thus offers an ideal location to link our understanding of structural and hydrogeologic properties at subduction faults to slip behavior. We applied an anisotropic traveltime tomography analysis to this active-source dataset from 97 ocean bottom seismographs deployed with an average spacing of 2 km on four parallel lines and dense air gun shooting with a 25 m interval, and succeeded in quantitatively constraining the P-wave velocities (Vp) of the upper plate forearc and the subducting slab and their azimuthal anisotropy in three dimensions. The velocity models revealed some locations with significant Vp azimuthal anisotropy over 5 % near the splay faults in the low-velocity accretionary wedge and the deformation front. This finding suggests that the anisotropy is not ubiquitous and homogeneous within the upper plate, but more localized in the vicinity of active thrust faults. While the fast axes of Vp are mostly oriented in the trench-normal direction in the accretionary wedge, which is interpreted as results of preferentially oriented cracks in a compressional stress regime associated with the plate convergence, they are rotated to the trench-parallel direction on the seaward side of the trench and in the landward backstop. This regional variation is consistent with the results of shear-wave splitting analysis (Zal et al., 2020) and the directions of maximum horizontal stress inferred from the borehole breakouts at two IODP drilling sites (Wallace et al., 2019). The significant magnitudes of anisotropy may indicate that in addition to the crack orientation, clay-rich sedimentary sequences that stack and form coherent strata along the accretionary wedge also contribute to seismic anisotropy in the subduction margin.

The strong ground motions, large crustal deformation, and tsunami generated by the 2011 Tohoku-oki earthquake ( Mw 9.1) reveal that a large coseismic slip likely propagated to shallow depth in the Japan Trench. Although data acquired by onshore networks cannot resolve the slip behavior of the updip fault rupture, marine geophysical and geological studies provide direct evidence of coseismic slip to the trench. Differential bathymetry data show ∼50 m of coseismic seafloor displacement extending to the central Japan Trench (38–39.2°N). Seismic data show that coseismic slip ruptured the seafloor within the trench. Pelagic clays may have promoted slip propagation to shallow depths, whereas disturbed/metamorphosed clays may have restricted slip to the main rupture zone. Those observations imply that a smooth, broadly distributed, weak, clay-rich sediment in a shallow part of a subduction zone is a characteristic factor that can foster a large coseismic slip to the trench and, consequently, the generation of a large tsunami. ▪ During the 2011 Tohoku-oki earthquake ( Mw 9.1), more than ∼50 m of slip occurred on a fault that ruptured the seafloor in the central Japan Trench. ▪ The fault rupture reaching the seafloor caused a large tsunami. ▪ Marine geophysical explorations revealed that a clay-rich sediment in the subduction zone was one factor fostering the large fault slip. ▪ Understanding of slip behavior in the shallow portion of a subduction zone will help us prepare for future large tsunamis along the Japan-Kuril Trench.

It is common knowledge that the Moho is the boundary between the crust and the Earth's mantle. Here we show along several seismic profiles through the Pacific Plate that a correlation exists between the strength of Moho reflections, crustal thickness, and water depth. Where the Moho can be detected clearly, the overlying oceanic crust is systematically thicker and the water depths are shallower. We suggest that two end-members of oceanic crust exist in fast spreading environments: one thick, underlain by a clear Moho; the other thinner, without a Moho; with all intermediate situations. In the Oman ophiolite, the best-preserved on-land analogue of fossil oceanic lithosphere created by fast-spreading, the boundary between the mantle peridotites and the lower crustal gabbros mainly consists of a dunitic transition zone (DTZ) ranging from a few meters to a few hundred meters in thickness. A sudden influx of seawater down to the base of the crust at the mid-ocean ridge (MOR) results in the hydrous (re-)melting of mantle peridotites, producing a dunitic residue at the crust-mantle boundary that represents the most reflective Moho. At the same time, the hydrous melting, in addition to the normal decompression melting, beneath the MOR, increases the thickness of the oceanic crust by enhancing magma production. In the absence of hydrous melting, the DTZ is thin or absent at the crust-mantle boundary, and instead the uppermost mantle harzburgite is intruded by gabbros, and/or the overlying crustal gabbro is intruded by numerous wehrlite bodies, which will be seismically gradational.

Multi-channel seismic reflection and sub-bottom profiling data reveal landward-dipping normal faults as potential conduits for mantle-derived fluids in the coseismic slip area of the 2011 Tohoku earthquake (Mw9.0). Normal faults below the helium isotope anomaly sites appear to develop through the forearc crust (i.e., the seafloor sedimentary section and Cretaceous basement) and to evolve to lower dip angles as extension progresses deeper, potentially extending down to the mantle wedge, despite their intermittently continuous reflections. The faults are characterized by high-amplitude, reverse-polarity reflections within the Cretaceous basement. Moreover, deep extension of the faults connecting to a low-velocity region spreading from the Cretaceous basement into the mantle wedge across the forearc Moho suggests that the faults are overpressured by local filling with mantle-derived fluids. The locations of the normal faults are roughly consistent with aftershocks of the 2011 Tohoku earthquake, which show normal-faulting focal mechanisms. The 2011 Tohoku mainshock and subsequent aftershocks can lead the pre-existing normal faults to be reactive and more permeable so that locally trapped mantle fluids can migrate up to the seafloor through fault fracture zones. The reactivated normal faults may be an indicator of shallow coseismic slip to the trench. Locally elevated fluid pressures can decrease the effective normal stress for the fault plane, facilitating easier slip along the fault and local tsunami. The landward-dipping normal faults developing from the seafloor down into the Cretaceous basement are predominant in the middle slope region of the forearc. A possible shear zone with high-amplitude, reverse-polarity reflections above the plate interface, which is almost localized to the middle slope region, suggests more intense basal erosion of the overlying plate in that region.

Seismic reflection and refraction data from Hikurangi Plateau (southwestern Pacific Ocean) require a crustal thickness of 10 ± 1 km, seismic velocity of 7.25 ± 0.35 km/s at the base of the crust, and mantle velocity of 8.30 ± 0.25 km/s just beneath the Moho. Published models of gravity data that assume normal crust and mantle density predict 5–10-km-thicker crust than we observe, suggesting that the mantle beneath Hikurangi Plateau has anomalously low density, which is inconsistent with previous suggestions of eclogite to explain observations of high seismic velocity. The combination of high seismic velocity and low density requires the mantle to be highly depleted and not serpentinized. We propose that Hikurangi Plateau formed by decompression melting of buoyant mantle that was removed from a craton root by subduction, held beneath 660 km by viscous coupling to slabs, and then rose as a plume from the lower mantle. Ancient Re-Os ages from mantle xenoliths in nearby South Island, New Zealand, support this hypothesis. Erosion of buoyant depleted mantle from craton roots by subduction and then recycling in plumes to make new lithosphere may be an important global geochemical process.

A ship-based seismic survey was conducted close to a fiber-optic submarine cable, and 50 km-long distributed acoustic sensing (DAS) recordings with air-gun shots were obtained for the first time. We examine the acquired DAS dataset together with the co-located hydrophones to investigate the detection capability of underwater acoustic (hydroacoustic) signals. Here, we show the hydroacoustic signals identified by the DAS measurement characterizing in frequency-time space. The DAS measurement can be sensitive for hydroacoustic signals in a frequency range from $$10^{-1}\,\text {Hz}$$ 10 - 1 Hz to a few tens of Hz which is similar to the hydrophones. The observed phases of hydroacoustic signals are coherent within a few kilometers along the submarine cable, suggesting the DAS is suitable for applying correlation analysis using hydroacoustic signals. Although our study suggests that virtual sensor’s self-noise of the present DAS measurement is relatively high compared to the conventional in-situ hydroacoustic sensors above a few Hz, the DAS identifies the ocean microseismic background noise along the entire submarine cable except for some cable sections de-coupled from the seafloor.

Subduction zones may develop submarine spreading centers that occur on the overriding plate behind the volcanic arc. In these back-arc settings, the subducting slab controls the pattern of mantle advection and may entrain hydrous melts from the volcanic arc or slab into the melting region of the spreading ridge. We recorded seismic data across the Western Mariana Ridge (WMR, northwestern Pacific Ocean), a remnant island arc with back-arc basins on either side. Its margins and both basins show distinctly different crustal structure. Crust to the west of the WMR, in the Parece Vela Basin, is 4–5 km thick, and the lower crust indicates seismic P-wave velocities of 6.5–6.8 km/s. To the east of the WMR, in the Mariana Trough Basin, the crust is ∼7 km thick, and the lower crust supports seismic velocities of 7.2–7.4 km/s. This structural diversity is corroborated by seismic data from other back-arc basins, arguing that a chemically diverse and heterogeneous mantle, which may differ from a normal mid-ocean-ridge–type mantle source, controls the amount of melting in back-arc basins. Mantle heterogeneity might not be solely controlled by entrainment of hydrous melt, but also by cold or depleted mantle invading the back-arc while a subduction zone reconfigures. Crust formed in back-arc basins may therefore differ in thickness and velocity structure from normal oceanic crust.

We present a high‐resolution three‐dimensional (3‐D) anisotropic P wave velocity (Vp) model in the northern Hikurangi margin offshore Gisborne, New Zealand, constructed by tomographic inversion of over 430,000 first arrivals recorded by a dense grid of ocean bottom seismometers. Since the study area covers a region where shallow slow slip events (SSEs) occur repeatedly and the subduction of a seamount is proposed, it offers an ideal location to link our understanding of structural and hydrogeologic properties at megathrust faults to slip behavior. The Vp model reveals an ~30‐km‐wide, low‐velocity accretionary wedge at the toe of the overriding plate, where previous seismic reflection studies show a series of active thrust faults branching from the plate interface. We find some locations with significant Vp azimuthal anisotropy >5% near the branching faults and the deformation front. This finding suggests that the anisotropy is not ubiquitous and homogeneous within the overriding plate, but more localized in the vicinity of active thrust faults. The fast axes of Vp within the accretionary wedge are mostly oriented to the plate convergence direction, which is interpreted as preferentially oriented cracks in a compressional stress regime associated with plate subduction. We find that the magnitudes of anisotropy are roughly equivalent to values found at oceanic spreading centers, where the extensional stress regime is dominant and the crack density is expected to be higher than subduction zones. This consideration may indicate that additional effects such as fault foliation and clay mineral alignment also contribute to upper plate anisotropy along subduction margins.

The nature of incoming sediments is a key controlling factor for the occurrence of megathrust earthquakes in subduction zones. In the 2011 Mw 9 Tohoku earthquake (offshore Japan), smectite-rich clay minerals transported by the subducting oceanic plate played a critical role in the development of giant interplate coseismic slip near the trench. Recently, we conducted intensive controlled-source seismic surveys at the northwestern part of the Pacific plate to investigate the nature of the incoming oceanic plate. Our seismic reflection data reveal that the thickness of the sediment layer between the seafloor and the acoustic basement is a few hundred meters in most areas, but there are a few areas where the sediments appear to be extremely thin. Our wide-angle seismic data suggest that the acoustic basement in these thin-sediment areas is not the top of the oceanic crust, but instead a magmatic intrusion within the sediments associated with recent volcanic activity. This means that the lower part of the sediments, including the smectite-rich pelagic red-brown clay layer, has been heavily disturbed and thermally metamorphosed in these places. The giant coseismic slip of the 2011 Tohoku earthquake stopped in the vicinity of a thin-sediment area that is just beginning to subduct. Based on these observations, we propose that post-spreading volcanic activity on the oceanic plate prior to subduction is a factor that can shape the size and distribution of interplate earthquakes after subduction through its disturbance and thermal metamorphism of the local sediment layer.

To assess the risk of tsunamis from outer-rise earthquakes, we carried out tsunami simulations using 33 simple rectangular fault models with 60° dip angles based on marine seismic observations and surveys of the Japan Trench. The largest tsunami resulting from these models, produced by a Mw 8.7 normal-faulting event on a fault 332 km long, had a maximum height of 27.0 m. We tested variations of the predictions due to the uncertainties in the assumed parameters. Because the actual dip angles of the Japan Trench outer-rise faults range from 45° to 75°, we calculated tsunamis from earthquakes on fault models with 45°, 60°, and 75° dip angles. We also tested a compound fault model with 75° dip in the upper half and 45° dip in the lower half. Rake angles were varied by ±15°. We also tested models consisting of small subfaults with dimensions of about 60 km, models using other earthquake scaling laws, models with heterogeneous slips, and models incorporating dispersive tsunami effects. Predicted tsunami heights changed by 10–15% for heterogeneous slips, up to 10% for varying dip angles, about 5–10% from considering tsunami dispersion, about 2% from varying rake angles, and about 1% from using the model with small subfaults. The use of different earthquake scaling laws changed predicted tsunami heights by about 50% on average for the 33 fault models. We emphasize that the earthquake scaling law used in tsunami predictions for outer-rise earthquakes should be chosen with great care.

Marine wide-angle seismic data obtained using air guns and ocean-bottom seismographs (OBSs) are effective for determining large-scale subseafloor seismic velocities, but they are ineffective for imaging details of shallow seismic reflection structures because of poor illumination. Surface-related multiple reflections offer the potential to enlarge the OBS data illumination area. We have developed a new seismic imaging method for OBS surveys applying seismic interferometry, a technique that uses surface-related multiples similarly to mirror imaging. Seismic interferometry can use higher order multiple reflections than mirror imaging, which mainly uses first-order multiple reflections. A salient advantage of interferometric OBS imaging over mirror imaging is that it requires only single-component data, whereas mirror imaging requires vertical geophone and hydrophone components to separate upgoing and downgoing wavefields. We applied interferometric OBS imaging to actual 175 km long wide-angle OBS data acquired in the Nankai Trough subduction zone. We obtained clear continuous reflection images in the deep and shallow parts including the seafloor from the OBS data acquired with large spacing. Deconvolution interferometry is more suitable than correlation interferometry to improve spatial resolution because of the effects of spectral division when applied to common receiver gathers. We examined the imaging result dependence on data acquisition and processing parameters considering the data quality and target depth. An air-gun-to-OBS distance of up to 50 km and a record length of 80 s were necessary for better imaging. In addition, our decimation tests confirmed that denser OBS spacing yielded better quality and higher resolution images. Understanding crosstalk effects due to the acquisition setting will be useful to optimize methods for eliminating them. Interferometric OBS imaging merged with conventional primary reflection imaging is a powerful method for revealing crustal structures.
