Abstract

Coherent compounding may be applied with diverging waves on 2D ultrasound probes to overcome the problem of small aperture probe and meet the requirement for high frame rate 3D imaging, as in transthoracic echography for example. Deterministic distributions of the virtual sources are often used in practice. The compromise between contrast and resolution has to be managed according to the application, and this will affect the distribution of the virtual sources. This study proposes to use a multi-objective optimization genetic algorithm to allow some freedom in the management of this compromise. The solutions obtained are compared to the case of a regular and a spiral distribution of sources. The results show that virtual sources distribution can produce images with the emphasis on either contrast or lateral resolution, and validate observations already reported in the literature.

Abstract

International audience; The use of 2-D array probes to perform 3-D ul-trasound imaging is still investigated in many domains. The extension from 2-D to 3-D imaging causes problems because of the need to control a very large number of elements on the probe. It might be overcome by using 2-D sparse array. This problem has been recently shown that sparse 2-D arrays can be used for 3-D fast ultrasound imaging based on the transmission of Diverging Waves (DW). The aim of this work is to experimentally analyze how the distribution of a given number (25) of Virtual Sources (VS) over a predefined area affects the images obtained with one fully populated probe and two sparse array probes, respectively. In order to do that, gridded and spiral distributions of virtual sources have been implemented. The results show that with the spiral distribution there is a general improvement of the contrast despite of a degradation on both lateral and axial resolutions.

Abstract

Ultrasound shear wave elastography is a well established tool for characterization of biologic tissues. While it has found applications in various medical disciplines such as oncology and urology its feasibility for pneumology still has to be shown. We provide experimental results of ultrasound shear wave elastography of soft porous materials in phantoms. Shear wave dispersion and evidence of the longitudinal slow ('Biot') wave dispersion allow for better characterization of soft porous materials.
