Abstract

Graphene is a fascinating material due to its unique properties. Recently, occurrence of superconductivity has been reported in graphene on intercalating or decorating it with lithium atoms. In view of complexities involved in preparation and usage of such systems, Li- substituted graphene seems to provide a better alternative. In this paper, electronic structure of lithium substituted graphene has been investigated for 25 atomic% of lithium substituted at carbon sites, i.e., for Li2C6 hetero-structure. Density of states N(0) at Fermi level is determined, which is one of the factors responsible for enhancement of electron-phonon coupling (λ) and hence of the transition temperature (Tc) of the material. 26. Cr(VI) removal from synthetic textile effluent using Tamarindus indica bark: a kinetic and thermodynamic study.

Abstract

Discharge of untreated textile effluents containing heavy metals is a serious environmental issue. Biosorption is a promising method for the removal of heavy metals. The present study analyses the biosorption of Cr(VI) from synthetic textile effluent onto tamarind bark biomass as a function of initial metal ion concentration, contact time, pH, sorbent dosage, shaking speed and temperature. The optimum pH and temperature are found to be 2 and 20°C respectively. The maximum biosorption capacity qe is 21.001 mg/g. Freundlich isotherm model fitted well with correlation coefficient of 0.9. Kinetic study reveals that the biosorption of Cr(VI) follows a pseudosecond-order model. The biosorption of Cr(VI) is spontaneous and exothermic as shown by negative free energy change (ΔG0) and negative enthalpy (ΔH0). Desorption experiments with 2M NaOH, infer the reusability of the biomass up tofive times with high efficiency. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

27. Enzymatic saccharification of pretreated rice straw by cellulases fromAspergillus nigerBK01

Abstract

Alkali-assisted acid pretreated rice straw was saccharified using cellulase from Aspergillus nigerBK01. The cellulase production by the fungus was enhanced by parametric optimization using solid-state fermentation conditions. Maximum cellulase production (12.0 U/gds of carboxymethyl cellulase, CMCase) was achieved in 96 h, using 6.0% substrate concentration, 7.5% inoculum concentration, 1:2 solid to liquid ratio, at pH 5.5, and temperature 28 °C, by supplementation of the fermentation medium with 0.1% carboxymethylcellulose and 0.1% ammonium nitrate. Characterization of crude cellulases showed that highest CMCase activity was observed at pH 4.8 and temperature 40 °C. The CMCase was stable from pH 4.8–5.5 and at a temperature range of 35–50 °C. The pretreated biomass was subjected to hydrolysis with the fungal cellulases. The saccharification optimization studies showed that 2% (v/v) enzyme concentration and hydrolysis time of 2.5 h were optimum for maximum yield, i.e, 23.78% sugars and 35.96% saccharification value.

Abstract

Phytase producing strain of Klebsiella sp. DB-3 FJ711774.1 was isolated from poultry field soil. The bacteria produced extracellular phytase under submerged fermentation (Smf) using orange peel and other agro-residues as nutritive substrates. Among different substrates, orange peel flour and wheat bran (2% w/v) provide a maximal yield of production of phytase i.e., 3.15 and 2.41 U/ml respectively when Smf was carried out by using fermentative media supplemented with 0.2% sucrose, 0.1% NH4H2PO4; inoculated with 1.5% cell suspension 24 h age and then, incubated at 50oC for 72 h. As such, there is no report of phytase production by using orange peel as substrate. The phytate biosynthesis by bacteria cultivation on medium based on orange peel flour was accompanied by the liberation of soluble phosphate without any extra supplementation of metal ions. Based on these results the use agro residues in the form of orange peel flour could be one of the best and cost effective alternatives to the costly pure phytate for industrial production of phytase using selected strain of Klebsiella spp. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Statistical experimental designs were applied for the optimization of phytase production by a bacteria Klebsiella sp. DB3 in orange peel flour. Four factors i.e., orange peel flour, ammonium dihydrogen phosphate, temperature and pH were optimized using central composite design (CCD). The optimum levels of variables that supported maximum enzyme activity were orange peel bran 2.0%, sucrose 2.0% and ammonium dihydrogen phosphate (NH4H2PO4) 0.1% and pH 5.5. The validity of the model in optimized conditions was verified. An overall 5.25-fold enhancement in phytase activity (0.60 to 3.15 U) was attained due to the optimization. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
