Search

in nanoscale systems in the presence of single-electron excitations generated by Lorentzian voltage drives, termed \textit{Levitons}. These excitations allow to realize the analog of quantum optics experiments using electrons instead of photons. Importantly, electrons in condensed matter systems are strongly affected by the presence of different types of non-trivial correlations, with no counterpart in the domain of photonic quantum optics. After providing a short introduction about Levitons in non-interacting systems, we focus on how they operate in the presence of two types of strong electronic correlations in nanoscale systems, such as those arising in the fractional quantum Hall effect or in superconducting systems. Specifically, we consider Levitons in a quantum Hall bar of the fractional quantum Hall effect, pinched by a quantum point contact, where anyons with fractional charge and statistics tunnel between opposite edges. In this case, a Leviton-Leviton interaction can be induced by the strongly correlated background. Concerning the effect of superconducting correlations on Levitons, we show that, in a normal metal system coupled to BCS superconductors, half integer Levitons minimize the excess noise in the Andreev regime. Interestingly, energy-entangled electron states can be realized on-demand in this type of hybrid setups by exploiting crossed Andreev reflection. Anyons are particles intermediate between fermions and bosons, characterized by a nontrivial exchange phase, yielding remarkable braiding statistics. Recent experiments have shown that anyonic braiding has observable consequences on edge transport in the fractional quantum Hall effect (FQHE). Here, we study transport signatures of anyonic braiding when the anyons have a finite width. We show that the width of the anyons, even extremely small, can have a tremendous impact on transport properties and braiding signatures. In particular, we find that taking the finite width into account allows us to explain recent experimental results on FQHE at filling factor $2/5$ [Ruelle et al., Phys. Rev. X \textbf{13}, 011031 (2023)]. We study charge transport in voltage-biased single-channel junctions involving helical superconductors with finite Cooper pair momentum. For a Josephson junction, the equilibrium current-phase relation shows a superconducting diode effect: the critical current depends on the propagation direction. We formulate a scattering theory for voltage-biased Josephson diodes and show that multiple Andreev reflection processes cause a rich subharmonic structure in the DC current-voltage curve at low temperatures and small voltages due to Doppler shifts of the spectral gap. In the current-biased case, the diode efficiency has maximal rectification efficiency $\eta_0\approx 0.4$ for this model. In the voltage-biased case, however, the rectification efficiency can reach the ideal value $\eta=1$. We analyze the rectification properties of voltage-biased Josephson junctions exhibiting the superconducting diode effect. Taking into account multiple Andreev reflection (MAR) processes in our scattering theory, we consider a short weak link of arbitrary transparency between two superconductors with finite Cooper pair momentum $2q$. In equilibrium, the diode efficiency is bounded from above in this model, with maximal efficiency $\eta_0\approx 0.4$. Out of equilibrium, we find a rich subharmonic structure in the current-voltage curve. For high transparency and low bias voltage $V$, the rectification efficiency $\eta(V)$ approaches the ideal value $\eta=1$ for $q\xi\to 1$ (with coherence length $\xi$)., Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures. Photons are emitted or absorbed by a nano-circuit under both equilibrium and non-equilibrium situations. Here, we focus on the non-equilibrium situation arising due to a temperature difference between the leads of a quantum point contact, and study the finite frequency (colored) noise. We explore this delta-$T$ noise in the finite frequency regime for two systems: conventional conductors described by Fermi liquid scattering theory and the fractional quantum Hall system at Laughlin filling fractions, described by the chiral Luttinger liquid formalism. We study the emission noise, its expansion in the temperature difference (focusing on the quadratic component) as well as the excess emission noise defined with respect to a properly chosen equilibrium situation. The behavior of these quantities are markedly different for the fractional quantum Hall system compared to Fermi liquids, signalling the role of strong correlations. We briefly treat the strong backscattering regime of the fractional quantum Hall liquid, where a behavior closer to the Fermi liquid case is observed.

We study photo-assisted transport for the edge states of a two dimensional electron gas in the fractional quantum Hall regime, pinched by a single quantum point contact. We provide a general expression of the photo-assisted current using a Keldysh-Floquet approach, when the AC drive is applied either directly to the edge states, or when it modulates the tunneling amplitude at the quantum point contact. Strikingly, for a simple cosine modulation of the tunneling amplitude, the phase shift of the second harmonic of the photoassisted current is directly related to the scaling dimension of the quasiparticle operators describing the fractional excitations. As the scaling dimension is intimately related to the statistics, our proposal of a gate modulation of the backscattered current provides a diagnosis of the statistics of Laughlin quasiparticles using a simple quantum point contact geometry., Comment: 18 pages, 4 figures

The fractional quantum Hall effect (FQHE) is known to host anyons, quasiparticles whose statistics is intermediate between bosonic and fermionic. We show here that Hong-Ou-Mandel (HOM) interferences between excitations created by narrow voltage pulses on the edge states of a FQHE system at low temperature show a direct signature of anyonic statistics. The width of the HOM dip is universally fixed by the thermal time scale, independently of the intrinsic width of the excited fractional wavepackets. This universal width can be related to the anyonic braiding of the incoming excitations with thermal fluctuations created at the quantum point contact. We show that this effect could be realistically observed with periodic trains of narrow voltage pulses using current experimental techniques.

We construct quasi one-dimensional topological and non-topological three-band lattices with tunable band gap and winding number of the flat band. Using mean field (MF) and exact density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) calculations, we show explicitly how the band gap affects pairing and superconductivity (SC) in a Hubbard model with attractive interactions. We show excellent agreement between MF and DMRG. When a phase twist is applied on the system, a phase difference appears between pairing order parameters on different sublattices, and this plays a very important role in the SC density. The SC weight, $D_s$, on the gapped topological, $W\neq0$, flat band increases linearly with interaction strength, $U$, for low values, and with a slope that depends on the details of the compact localized state at $U=0$. As $U\to 0$ for the gapped non-topological flat band ($W=0$), $D_s$ decays with a power law faster than quadratic but slower than exponential. This indicates that isolated non-topological flat bands are less beneficial to SC. In the gapless case (flat band touching the band above it), we find at low $U$ (both for $W=0$ and $W\neq 0$) that $D_s\propto U^\varphi$ with $\varphi<1$ contrary to the $U{\rm ln}\, ({\rm const.}/U)$ behavior reported in the literature. In other words, $D_s$ increases faster than linearly for low $U$ thus favoring SC at weak interaction more than the gapped case. For systems with touching bands, we observe that the one-body correlation length, $\xi$, diverges as a power law as $U\rightarrow0$, while for the isolated flat band $\xi(U\to 0)$ is a constant smaller than one lattice spacing. Both behaviors are distinct from the exponential divergence of $\xi$ in the dispersive case. Our results re-establish that the BCS mean field and quantum metric alone are insufficient to characterize SC at weak coupling.

We investigate photo assisted electronic transport in a normal-metal/BCS-superconductor junction with a microscopic Hamiltonian approach, for several types of periodic voltage drives applied on the normal-metal side. The time-dependent current and the photo-assisted noise are computed to all orders of the tunneling Hamiltonian using a Keldysh-Nambu-Floquet approach. An excess noise analysis allows one to determine to what extent pure electronic excitations with a small number of electrons per period can be generated by the different drives. When the superconducting gap is small compared to the drive frequency, the junction behaves like a normal-metal junction and minimal excess noise is reached for Lorentzian voltage drives carrying an integer charge (levitons). In the opposite regime of a large-gap, the excess noise vanishes for half-quantized levitons, giving rise to the perfect transmission of a Cooper pair on the superconducting side. This microscopic approach also allows us to address the intermediate regime, when the drive frequency is comparable to the gap, allowing us to study the non-trivial interplay between Andreev reflection and quasiparticle-transfer processes. Our analysis also shows the appearance of Tien-Gordon-type relations connecting the current and noise in the AC-driven junction to their DC counterpart, which we investigate in details. Finally, the possibility to build a reliable on-demand source of Cooper pairs with this setup is examined using realistic experimental parameters.

We consider the non-equilibrium zero frequency noise generated by a temperature gradient applied on a device composed of two normal leads separated by a quantum dot. We recall the derivation of the scattering theory for non-equilibrium noise for a general situation where both a bias voltage and a temperature gradient can coexist and put it in a historical perspective. We provide a microscopic derivation of zero frequency noise through a quantum dot based on a tight binding Hamiltonian, which constitutes a generalization of the pioneering work of Caroli et al. for the current obtained in the context of the Keldysh formalism. For a single level quantum dot, the obtained transmission coefficient entering the scattering formula for the non-equilibrium noise corresponds to a Breit-Wigner resonance. We compute the delta-$T$ noise as a function of the dot level position, and of the dot level width, in the Breit-Wigner case, for two relevant situations which were considered recently in two separate experiments. In the regime where the two reservoir temperatures are comparable, our gradient expansion shows that the delta-$T$ noise is dominated by its quadratic contribution, and is minimal close to resonance. In the opposite regime where one reservoir is much colder, the gradient expansion fails and we find the noise to be typically linear in temperature before saturating. In both situations, we conclude with a short discussion of the case where both a voltage bias and a temperature gradient are present, in order to address the potential competition with thermoelectric effects., Comment: 19 pages, 9 figures

We study the pairing and superconducting properties of the attractive Hubbard model in two quasi one-dimensional topological lattices: the Creutz and sawtooth lattices. They share two peculiar properties: each of their band structures exhibits a flat band with a non-trivial winding number. The difference, however, is that only the Creutz lattice is genuinely topological, owing to a chiral (sub-lattice) symmetry, resulting in a quantized winding number and zero energy edge modes for open boundary conditions. We use mean field and exact density matrix renormalization group in our work. Our three main results are: (a) For both lattice systems, the superconducting weight, $D_s$, is linear in the coupling strength, $U$, for low values of $U$; (b) for small $U$, $D_s$ is proportional to the quantum metric for the Creutz system but not for the sawtooth system because its sublattices are not equivalent; (c) conventional BCS mean field is not appropriate for such systems with inequivalent sublattices. We show that, for a wide range of densities and coupling strengths, these systems are very well described by a full multi-band mean field method where the pairing parameters and the local particle densities on the inequivalent sublattices are variational mean field parameters.

We use unbiased computational methods to elucidate the onset and properties of pair superfluidity in two-species fermionic and bosonic systems with onsite interspecies attraction loaded in one-dimensional optical lattice. We compare results from quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) and density matrix renormalization group (DMRG), emphasizing the one-to-one correspondence between the Drude weight tensor, calculated with DMRG, and the various winding numbers extracted from the QMC. Our results show that, for any nonvanishing attractive interaction, pairs form and are the sole contributors to superfluidity, there are no individual contributions due to the separate species. For weak attraction, the pair size diverges exponentially, i.e. Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) pairing requiring huge systems to bring out the pair-only nature of the superfluid. This crucial property is largely overlooked in many studies, thereby misinterpreting the origin and nature of the superfluid. We compare and contrast this with the repulsive case and show that the behavior is very different, contradicting previous claims about drag superfluidity and the symmetry of properties for attractive and repulsive interactions. Finally, our results show that the situation is similar for soft core bosons: superfluidity is due only to pairs, even for the smallest attractive interaction strength compatible with the largest system sizes that we could attain., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

We study the ground state phase diagram of a nonlinear two-photon Rabi-Hubbard (RH) model in one dimension using quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) simulations and density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) calculations. Our model includes a nonlinear photon-photon interaction term. Absent this term, the RH model has only one phase, the normal disordered phase, and suffers from spectral collapse at larger values of the photon-qubit interaction or inter-cavity photon hopping. The photon-photon interaction, no matter how small, stabilizes the system which now exhibits {\it two} quantum phase transitions: Normal phase to {\it photon pair} superfluid (PSF) transition and PSF to single particle superfluid (SPSF). The discrete $Z_4$ symmetry of the Hamiltonian spontaneously breaks in two stages: First it breaks partially as the system enters the PSF and then completely breaks when the system finally enters the SPSF phase. We study the current correlations of fractional quantum Hall edges at the output of a quantum point contact (QPC) subjected to a temperature gradient. This out-of-equilibrium situation gives rise to a form of temperature-activated shot noise, dubbed delta-$T$ noise. We show that the tunneling of Laughlin quasiparticles leads to a negative delta-$T$ noise, in stark contrast with electron tunneling. Moreover, varying the transmission of the QPC or applying a voltage bias across the Hall bar may flip the sign of this noise contribution, yielding signatures which can be accessed experimentally., Comment: 6+8 pages, 3 figures

We study the ground state phase diagrams of two-photon Dicke, the one-dimensional Jaynes-Cummings-Hubbard (JCH), and Rabi-Hubbard (RH) models using mean field, perturbation, quantum Monte Carlo (QMC), and density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) methods. We first compare mean field predictions for the phase diagram of the Dicke model with exact QMC results and find excellent agreement. The phase diagram of the JCH model is then shown to exhibit a single Mott insulator lobe with two excitons per site, a superfluid (SF, superradiant) phase and a large region of instability where the Hamiltonian becomes unbounded. Unlike the one-photon model, there are no higher Mott lobes. Also unlike the one-photon case, the SF phases above and below the Mott are surprisingly different: Below the Mott, the SF is that of photon {\it pairs} as opposed to above the Mott where it is SF of simple photons. The mean field phase diagram of the RH model predicts a transition from a normal to a superradiant phase but none is found with QMC., Comment: 14 pages, 14 figures

We present a detailed numerical and theoretical analysis of the recently discovered phenomenon of coherent forward scattering. This effect manifests itself as a macroscopic interference peak in the forward direction of the momentum distribution of a matter wave launched with finite velocity in a random potential. Focusing on the two-dimensional case, we show that coherent forward scattering generally arises due the confinement of the wave in a finite region of space, and explain under which conditions it can be seen as a genuine signature of Anderson localization., Comment: 13 pages, 13 figures

We study the phase diagram of the one-dimensional bosonic Hubbard model with contact ($U$) and near neighbor ($V$) interactions focusing on the gapped Haldane insulating (HI) phase which is characterized by an exotic nonlocal order parameter. The parameter regime ($U$, $V$ and $\mu$) where this phase exists and how it competes with other phases such as the supersolid (SS) phase, is incompletely understood. We use the Stochastic Green Function quantum Monte Carlo algorithm as well as the density matrix renormalization group to map out the phase diagram. Our main conclusions are that the HI exists only at $\rho=1$, the SS phase exists for a very wide range of parameters (including commensurate fillings) and displays power law decay in the one body Green function. The physics of strongly correlated quantum particles within a flat band was originally explored as a route to itinerant ferromagnetism and, indeed, a celebrated theorem by Lieb rigorously establishes that the ground state of the repulsive Hubbard model on a bipartite lattice with unequal number of sites in each sublattice must have nonzero spin S at half-filling. Recently, there has been interest in Lieb geometries due to the possibility of novel topological insulator, nematic, and Bose-Einstein condensed (BEC) phases. In this paper, we extend the understanding of the attractive Hubbard model on the Lieb lattice by using Determinant Quantum Monte Carlo to study real space charge and pair correlation functions not addressed by the Lieb theorems.

The Haldane Insulator is a gapped phase characterized by an exotic non-local order parameter. The parameter regimes at which it might exist, and how it competes with alternate types of order, such as supersolid order, are still incompletely understood. Using the Stochastic Green Function (SGF) quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) and the Density Matrix Renormalization Group (DMRG), we study numerically the ground state phase diagram of the one-dimensional bosonic Hubbard model (BHM) with contact and near neighbor repulsive interactions. We show that, depending on the ratio of the near neighbor to contact interactions, this model exhibits charge density waves (CDW), superfluid (SF), supersolid (SS) and the recently identified Haldane insulating (HI) phases. We show that the HI exists only at the tip of the unit filling CDW lobe and that there is a stable SS phase over a very wide range of parameters.

Pairing in a population imbalanced Fermi system in a two-dimensional optical lattice is studied using Determinant Quantum Monte Carlo (DQMC) simulations and mean-field calculations. The approximation-free numerical results show a wide range of stability of the Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovshinnikov (FFLO) phase. Contrary to claims of fragility with increased dimensionality we find that this phase is stable across wide range of values for the polarization, temperature and interaction strength. Both homogeneous and harmonically trapped systems display pairing with finite center of mass momentum, with clear signatures either in momentum space or real space, which could be observed in cold atomic gases loaded in an optical lattice. We also use the harmonic level basis in the confined system and find that pairs can form between particles occupying different levels which can be seen as the analog of the finite center of mass momentum pairing in the translationally invariant case. Finally, we perform mean field calculations for the uniform and confined systems and show the results to be in good agreement with QMC. Numerical simulations show that, at the onset of Anderson localization, the momentum distribution of a coherent wave packet launched inside a random potential exhibits, in the forward direction, a novel interference peak that complements the coherent backscattering peak. An explanation of this phenomenon in terms of maximally crossed diagrams predicts that the signal emerges around the localization time and grows on the scale of the Heisenberg time associated with the localization volume. Quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) techniques are used to provide an approximation-free investigation of the phases of the one-dimensional attractive Hubbard Hamiltonian in the presence of population imbalance. The temperature at which the "Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov" (FFLO) phase is destroyed by thermal fluctuations is determined as a function of the polarization. We study the attractive fermionic Hubbard model on a honeycomb lattice using determinantal quantum Monte Carlo simulations. By increasing the interaction strength U (relative to the hopping parameter t) at half-filling and zero temperature, the system undergoes a quantum phase transition at 5.0 < U_c/t < 5.1 from a semi-metal to a phase displaying simultaneously superfluid behavior and density order. Doping away from half-filling, and increasing the interaction strength at finite but low temperature T, the system always appears to be a superfluid exhibiting a crossover between a BCS and a molecular regime. These different regimes are analyzed by studying the spectral function. The formation of pairs and the emergence of phase coherence throughout the sample are studied as U is increased and T is lowered.

We report a numerical analysis of the Anderson transition in a quantum-chaotic system, the quasiperiodic kicked rotor with three incommensurate frequencies. It is shown that this dynamical system exhibits the same critical phenomena as the truly random 3D-Anderson model. By taking proper account of systematic corrections to one-parameter scaling, the universality of the critical exponent is demonstrated. In a recent Letter (Phys. Rev. Lett. \textbf{98}, 083601 (2007), arXiv:cond-mat/0610804), O. Assaf and E. Akkermans claim that the angular correlations of the light intensity scattered by a cloud of cold atoms with internal degeneracy (Zeeman sublevels) of the ground state overcome the usual Rayleigh law. More precisely, they found that they become exponentially large with the size of the sample. We study coherent backscattering of a quasi-monochromatic laser by a dilute gas of cold two-level atoms. We consider the perturbative regime of weak intensities, where nonlinear effects arise from {\em inelastic} two-photon scattering processes. Here, coherent backscattering can be formed by interference between {\em three} different scattering amplitudes. Consequently, if elastically scattered photons are filtered out from the photodetection signal by means of suitable frequency-selective detection, we find the nonlinear backscattering enhancement factor to exceed the linear barrier two., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures

We present the first calculation of coherent backscattering with inelastic scattering by saturated atoms. We consider the scattering of a quasi-monochromatic laser pulse by two distant atoms in free space. By restricting ourselves to scattering of two photons, we employ a perturbative approach, valid up to second order in the incident laser intensity. The backscattering enhancement factor is found to be smaller than two (after excluding single scattering), indicating a loss of coherence between the doubly scattered light emitted by both atoms. Since the undetected photon carries information about the path of the detected photon, the coherence loss can be explained by a which-path argument, in analogy with a double-slit experiment., Comment: 16 pages, 10 figures

We study the three-body Coulomb problem in two dimensions and show how to calculate very accurately its quantum properties. The use of a convenient set of coordinates makes it possible to write the Schr\"{o}dinger equation only using annihilation and creation operators of four harmonic oscillators, coupled by various terms of degree up to twelve. We analyse in details the discrete symmetry properties of the eigenstates. The energy levels and eigenstates of the two-dimensional helium atom are obtained numerically, by expanding the Schr\"{o}dinger equation on a convenient basis set, that gives sparse banded matrices, and thus opens up the way to accurate and efficient calculations. We give some very accurate values of the energy levels of the first bound Rydberg series. Using the complex coordinate method, we are also able to calculate energies and widths of doubly excited states, i.e. resonances above the first ionization threshold. In the context of quantum chaos, both theory and numerical analysis predict large fluctuations of the tunnelling transition probabilities when irregular dynamics is present at the classical level. We consider here the non-dissipative quantum evolution of cold atoms trapped in a time-dependent modulated periodic potential generated by two laser beams. We study how the ionic core in a non-hydrogenic atom modifies the dynamics of a Rydberg electron in the presence of a weak static external field. We show that such a system is neither regular nor chaotic: its energy levels display unusual statistical properties, intermediate between the standard Poisson and Random Matrix ones. The ionic core acts as a scatterer whose size is comparable to the de Broglie wavelength of the electron, inducing specific quantum effects., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures. We show that the spacing distributions of rational rhombus billiards fall in a family of universality classes distinctly different from the Wigner-Dyson family of random matrix theory and the Poisson distribution. Some of the distributions find explanation in a recent work of Bogomolny, Gerland and Schmit. For the irrational billiards, despite ergodicity, we get the same distributions for the examples considered - once again, distinct from the Wigner-Dyson distributions. In this paper, we examine the properties of the 1Se and 1Po states of helium, combining perimetric coordinates and complex rotation methods. We compute Fourier transforms of quantities of physical interest, among them the average of the operator cos(theta_12), which measures the correlation between the two electrons. Graphs obtained for both 1Se and 1Po states show peaks at action of classical periodic orbits, either "frozen planet" orbit or asymmetric stretch orbits. This observation legitimates the semiclassical quantization of helium with those orbits only, not just for S states but also for P states, which is a new result.
