Ocean Drilling Program Site 1165 penetrated drift sediments on the East Antarctic continental rise and recovered sediments from a low-energy depositional environment. The sediments are characterized by prominent alternations between a green to greenish-gray diatom-bearing hemipelagic facies and gray to dark gray hemiturbiditic facies. Our investigation of an upper Miocene section, using high-resolution color spectra, multisensor core logs, and X-ray fluorescence scans, reveals that sedimentation changes occur at Milankovitch orbital frequencies of obliquity and precession. We use this finding to derive an astronomical calibrated time scale and to calculate iron mass-accumulation rates, as a proxy for sediment-accumulation rates. Terrigenous iron fluxes change by as much as 100% during each obliquity cycle. This change and an episodic pattern of enhanced icerafted debris deposition during times of deglaciation provide evidence for a dynamic and likely wet-based late Miocene East Antarctic Ice Sheet (EAIS) that underwent large size variations at orbital time scales. The dynamic behavior of the EAIS implies that a significant proportion of the variability seen in oxygen isotope records of the late Miocene reflects Antarctic ice-volume changes. Ten ODP sites drilled in a depth transect (2164–4775 m water depth) during Leg 172 recovered high-deposition rate (>20 cm/kyr) sedimentary sections from sediment drifts in the western North Atlantic. For each site an age model covering the past 0.8–0.9 Ma has been developed. The time scales have a resolution of 10–20 kyr and are derived by tuning variations of estimated carbonate content to the orbital parameters precession and obliquity. Based on the similarity in the signature of proxy records and the spectral character of the time series, the sites are divided into two groups: precession cycles are better developed in carbonate records from a group of shallow sites (2164–2975 m water depth, Sites 1055–1058) while the deeper sites (2995–4775 m water depth, Sites 1060–1063) are characterized by higher spectral density in the obliquity band. The resulting time scales show excellent coherence with other dated carbonate and isotope records from low latitudes. Besides the typical Milankovitch cyclicity significant variance of the resulting carbonate time series is concentrated at millennial-scale changes with periods of about 12, 6, 4, 2.5, and 1.5 kyr. Comparisons of carbonate records from the Blake Bahama Outer Ridge and the Bermuda Rise reveal a remarkable similarity in the time and frequency domain indicating a basin-wide uniform sedimentation pattern during the last 0.9 Ma. Abstract: Trough mouth fans are formed by aggradation of glacial debris flows from sediment deposited by fast flowing ice streams extending to the shelf edge. We here present investigations at two sites, ODP Site 1166 on the shelf and ODP Site 1167 drilled on the Prydz Channel Fan in order to contribute to the understanding of Neogene ice flow patterns in Prydz Bay. The mineralogy, wt.% >63 μm, physical and magnetic properties were analyzed. The mineralogy of Neogene strata at Site 1166 can be correlated to nearby ODP Site 742 drilled during Leg 119. Moreover an increase in the shear strength of the sediments (Leg 119 load event 3) is found both at Site 1166 and Site 742. This load event probably indicates that the oldest glacial configuration involved thicker glaciers than the later ones. The results from Site 1167 show that there has been a significant change in the provenance of the sediments during the past 2 million years. The greatest change occurred at about 1.13 Ma and implies a shift in the glacial configuration in Prydz Bay with a greater contribution of material from western parts of the drainage basin during the deposition of Unit II (>1.13 Ma; 217–435 mbsf) at Site 1167 on the Prydz Channel Fan. Coccolithophores play a key role in the oceanic carbon cycle through the biological and carbonate pumps. Understanding controls on coccolithophore productivity is thus fundamental to quantify oceanic carbon cycling. We investigate changes in coccolithophore productivity over several Pleistocene glacial-interglacial cycles using a high-resolution coccolith Sr/Ca ratio record, which is an indicator of growth rate and thus a proxy for coccolithophore productivity. We use Middle Pleistocene sediments from the North Atlantic Integrated Ocean Drilling Program (IODP) Site U1313 (41.00′ N, 32.58’ W) spanning Marine Isotopic Stages 16 to 10 (638–356 kyr). The location of the record allows us to investigate processes affecting productivity in a mid-latitude setting and to unravel the effects of temperature and regional ocean circulation. Coccolithophore productivity shows a dominant glacial-interglacial cyclicity with higher productivity during glacials, which appears to reflect the southward migration of the North Atlantic high productivity zone currently located between 45° and 55° N. Spectral analysis of the productivity record reveals a suborbital variability consistent with forcing by insolation maxima superimposed on the front migration pattern. Similar to today, coccolithophore productivity during interglacials was enhanced when insolation was at its maximum in spring or in autumn, whereas during glacials, productivity was enhanced when summer/autumn insolation was at its maximum. We show that in the studied region, coccolithophore productivity was driven by processes reflecting regional insolation. Abstract: Salinity increase in the subtropical gyre system may have pre-conditioned the North Atlantic Ocean for a rapid return to stronger overturning circulation and high-latitude warming following meltwater events during the Last Glacial period. Here we investigate the Gulf Stream – subtropical gyre system properties over Dansgaard–Oeschger (DO) cycles 14 to 12, including Heinrich ice-rafting event 5. During the Holocene and Last Glacial Maximum a positive gradient in surface dwelling planktonic foraminifera δ18O (Globigerinoides ruber) can be observed between the Gulf Stream and subtropical gyre, due to decreasing temperature, increasing salinity, and a change from summer to year-round occurrence of G. ruber. We assess whether this gradient was a common feature during stadial-interstadial climate oscillations of Marine Isotope Stage 3, by comparing existing G. ruber δ18O from ODP Site 1060 (subtropical gyre location) and new data from ODP Site 1056 (Gulf Stream location) between 54 and 46 ka. Our results suggest that this gradient was largely absent during the period studied. During the major warm DO interstadials 14 and 12 we infer a more zonal and wider Gulf Stream, influencing both ODP Sites 1056 and 1060. A Gulf Stream presence during these major interstadials is also suggested by the large vertical δ18O gradient between shallow dwelling planktonic foraminifera species, especially G. ruber, and the deep dwelling species Globorotalia inflata at site 1056, which we associate with strong summer stratification and Gulf Stream presence. A major reduction in this vertical δ18O gradient from 51 ka until the end of Heinrich event 5 at 48.5 ka suggests site 1056 was situated within the subtropical gyre in this mainly cold period, from which we infer a migration of the Gulf Stream to a position nearer to the continental shelf, indicative of a narrower Gulf Stream with possibly reduced transport.
