7. Robust Image Segmentation in Low Depth Of Field Images

Abstract

In photography, low depth of field (DOF) is an important technique to emphasize the object of interest (OOI) within an image. Thus, low DOF images are widely used in the application area of macro, portrait or sports photography. When viewing a low DOF image, the viewer implicitly concentrates on the regions that are sharper regions of the image and thus segments the image into regions of interest and non regions of interest which has a major impact on the perception of the image. Thus, a robust algorithm for the fully automatic detection of the OOI in low DOF images provides valuable information for subsequent image processing and image retrieval. In this paper we propose a robust and parameterless algorithm for the fully automatic segmentation of low DOF images. We compare our method with three similar methods and show the superior robustness even though our algorithm does not require any parameters to be set by hand. Abstract

Searching for optimal ways in a network is an important task in multiple application areas such as social networks, co-citation graphs or road networks. In the majority of applications, each edge in a network is associated with a certain cost and an optimal way minimizes the cost while fulfilling a certain property, e.g connecting a start and a destination node. In this paper, we want to extend pure cost networks to so-called cost-gain networks. In this type of network, each edge is additionally associated with a certain gain. Thus, a way having a certain cost additionally provides a certain gain. In the following, we will discuss the problem of finding ways providing maximal gain while costing less than a certain budget. An application for this type of problem is the round trip problem of a traveler: Given a certain amount of time, which is the best round trip traversing the most scenic landscape or visiting the most important sights? In the following, we distinguish two cases of the problem. The first does not control any redundant edges and the second allows a more sophisticated handling of edges occurring more than once. To answer the maximum round trip queries on a given graph data set, we propose unidirectional and bidirectional search algorithms. Both types of algorithms are tested for the use case named above on real world spatial networks.

Abstract

Effective security surveillance is crucial in the railway sector to prevent security incidents, including vandalism, trespassing, and sabotage. This paper discusses the challenges of maintaining seamless surveillance over extensive railway infrastructure, considering both technological advances and the growing risks posed by terrorist attacks. Based on previous research, this paper discusses the limitations of current surveillance methods, particularly in managing information overload and false alarms that result from integrating multiple sensor technologies. To address these issues, we propose a new fusion model that utilises Probabilistic Occupancy Maps (POMs) and Bayesian fusion techniques. The fusion model is evaluated on a comprehensive dataset comprising three use cases with a total of eight real life critical scenarios. We show that, with this model, the detection accuracy can be increased while simultaneously reducing the false alarms in railway security surveillance systems. This way, our approach aims to enhance situational awareness and reduce false alarms, thereby improving the effectiveness of railway security measures. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

We present a novel approach for measuring and representing acoustic emissions of transformers. The representation of location-based acoustic emissions enables improved monitoring of transformers, e.g., to detect and predict anomalies and failure events. Here, we introduce 3D acoustic heatmaps to visualize the sound emission patterns of a transformer. We use a combined sensing approach consisting of a 3D point cloud, a microphone array, and beamforming algorithms to generate the distributed representation of acoustic emissions over the entire surface of the transformer. In a further step, we intend to apply machine learning methods to the generated data to enable early fault prevention and predictive maintenance.

Abstract

Le Corbusier’s apartment-studio is an iconic object of the twentieth century, combining the indisputable material values of the building with the intangible “sense of place” of an architect’s home. Le Corbusier, who lived there from 1934 until his death in 1965, treated it as a permanent construction site — a unique place of spatial, plastic and constructional experimentation. Phases of change at “24NC” are overlaid as a palimpsest, and the apartment’s “many lives” create major philosophical problems for conservation. A study of its material history over time reveals a simple fact: the “stratigraphy” itself, hard to unscramble yet rich in meaning, is key to the object’s importance. This first monograph on the apartment-studio, richly illustrated with largely unpublished visual material, presents research undertaken by Franz Graf and Giulia Marino for the Fondation Le Corbusier during preparatory investigations for the program of restoration.

Abstract

Le Corbusier’s studio-apartment is an iconic object of the twentieth century, combining the indisputable material values of the building with the intangible “sense of place” of an architect’s home. Le Corbusier, who lived there from 1934 until his death in 1965, treated it as a permanent construction site — a unique place of spatial, plastic and constructional experimentation. For conservationists today, the many lives of Le Corbusier’s apartment-studio present major problems for conservation ethics both in terms of appropriate technical measures and theoretical approaches, the two being inseparably linked. Based on a study by the EPFL TSAM, requested by the Fondation Le Corbusier, which wished to undertake the restoration of this emblematic object with the support of in-depth preliminary studies, this paper also proposes to return to the issues raised by the museography of Le Corbusier’s apartment-studio. What educational measures can be adopted to bring the troubled history of this asset of universal value, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2016, to a broad public?
