3. Propagation of Uncertainty in a Rotating Pipe Mechanism to Generate an Impinging Swirling Jet Flow for Heat Transfer from a Flat Plate

Abstract

In Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) studies composed of the coupling of different simulations, the uncertainty in one stage may be propagated to the following stage and affect the accuracy of the prediction. In this paper, a framework for uncertainty quantification is applied to the two-step simulation of the mechanical design of a swirling jet flow generated by a rotating pipe (\textit{Simulation 1}) impinging on a flat plate to provide convective heat transfer (\textit{Simulation 2}). The first approach is the Stochastic Collocation Method (SCM) with Clenshaw-Curtis sparse grids. The conclusion drawn from the analysis is that the simulated system does not exhibit a significant sensitivity to stochastic variations of model input parameters, over the tested uncertainty ranges. Additionally, a set of non-linear regression models for the stochastic velocity and turbulent profiles for the pipe nozzle are created and tested, since impinging jets at Reynolds number of $Re=23000$ are very frequent in the literature, but stochastic inlet conditions have never been provided. Numerical results demonstrate a negligible difference in the predicted convective heat transfer with respect to the use of the profiles simulated via CFD. These suggested surrogate models can be directly embedded onto other CFD applications (e.g arrays of jets or jet flows impinging on plates with different shapes) in which a realistic swirling flow under uncertainty can be of interest.

Abstract

Growing concern over potential ecotoxicological problems caused by micropollutants (MPs) in water has led to the application of adsorptive and oxidative advanced treatment technologies at European wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). Direct dosage of gaseous ozone via diffusers or pump-injection systems is the most common large-scale process applied in water and wastewater treatment. Studies point out that MP removal may take place via the direct, very selective reaction with the ozone molecule as well as the indirect reaction with the very reactive but nonselective hydroxyl radicals. Several process parameters and set-ups may affect the MPs elimination and inhibit or even cause the formation of transformation products (TPs) such as bromate. This work compares an alternative ozone application procedure (the so-called 'ozone strong water' dosing – OSW) with standard systems regarding MP elimination, ozone consumption, reaction time, and required plant space. A full-scale OSW system was installed and operated at the WWTP Duisburg-Vierlinden. A significant reduction in the time required to achieve the maximum possible elimination was observed for all six MPs investigated, with a hydraulic reaction time of 8 min. According to a theoretical calculation, the reactor volume could be reduced by two-thirds of the installed volume. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

28. Drivers of Supplier Participation in Ride-Hailing Platforms.

Abstract

Ride-hailing platforms such as Uber offer service suppliers more flexible work conditions but lower security than permanent jobs. This study examines the preferences of ride-hailing drivers when they are offered contract and platform design options related to flexibility, financial security, and information features. The sample design and the discrete choice experiment approach we use permit the exploration of differences in the preferences of sub-groups of suppliers, including active and inactive drivers, drivers with and without other jobs, and those who multi-home. We find that the utility and willingness of drivers to work for ride-hailing platforms generally increase when the ride-hailing company provides a minimum wage guarantee, a company-sponsored benefit plan, and information features that protect drivers' privacy and allow them to screen for undesired passengers. These attributes are important enough for drivers so that they are willing to sacrifice scheduling flexibility by committing to minimum working hours in exchange for those attributes. We identified significant heterogeneity in driver preferences. For drivers with a primary job or jobs other than ride-hailing, the perception of working conditions in the primary job affects their willingness to restart ride-hailing services. Preferences also vary depending on whether a driver participates in one or more platforms. These results suggest that offering a menu of contract options could provide novel tools for ride-hailing companies to improve the stability and predictability of supply. It may also alleviate some of the concerns about driver working conditions that have led to increasing calls for the regulation of ride-hailing services to protect drivers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Este trabajo presenta una herramienta de visualización que pretende ayudar a comprender los conceptos de los traductores dirigidos por la sintaxis, proporcionando una representación gráfica de conceptos tan abstractos. La herramienta que se describe consta de una interfaz de visualización y una API. La interfaz de visualización permite a profesores y estudiantes ver una representación gráfica del proceso de ejecución del traductor dirigido por la sintaxis observando detalles como las acciones semánticas ejecutadas o los valores de los atributos de los símbolos. La API permite al usuario anotar una especificación del traductor dirigido por la sintaxis de forma que durante su ejecución genere una traza que permita su posterior visualización con la interfaz. Esta división entre interfaz y API busca que las visualizaciones puedan ser independientes del software utilizado para la generación del traductor, tratando así de sortear alguna de las limitaciones que tienen otras herramientas existentes. In this work, we present a visualization tool aimed at supporting students’ comprehension of syntax directed translators concepts by providing graphical representations of such abstract concepts. The tool is made up of two parts: a visualization interface and an API. The visualization interface provide teachers and students with a graphical representation of the execution process of the syntax directed translator. This representation provide a detailed view of the executed semantic actions and the values of the symbol attributes. The API allows the user to annotate the specification of the syntax directed translator. Thus, its execution generates a trace that will be used by the interface to produce the visualization. This division between the interface and the API supports the independence between the visualizations and the parser generator tool, avoiding some of the limitations identified in other existing tools. Abstract

Este trabajo presenta una herramienta educativa basada en tecnologías de visualización. El principal objetivo de esta herramienta es servir de apoyo a los estudiantes en el aprendizaje de los conceptos asociados a la traducción dirigida por la sintaxis. En primer lugar, se ha desarrollado una API para permitir la anotación de la especificación del traductor. En segundo lugar, la ejecución del traductor genera como efecto colateral la traza de ejecución que será interpretada por la interfaz de visualización. Así, se ofrece una representación visual de la ejecución del traductor en términos de las acciones semánticas ejecutadas y los valores de los atributos de los símbolos. Debido a la separación entre la API de anotación y la interfaz de visualización, se provee cierto grado de independencia entre la interfaz y la herramienta de generación del traductor. Con la actual situación por la COVID-19, no se ha podido realizar una evaluación empírica. En su lugar, se ha realizado una evaluación analítica desde tres puntos de vista: la usabilidad de la interfaz, la usabilidad de la API y la efectividad pedagógica. Los resultados son positivos y nos llevan hacia la evaluación empírica de la herramienta definiendo futuras líneas de trabajo.
