The emerging technology of quantum reservoir computing (QRC) stands out in the noisy-intermediate scale quantum era (NISQ) for its exceptional efficiency and adaptability. By harnessing the power of quantum computing, it holds a great potential to untangle complex economic markets, as demonstrated here in an application to food price crisis prediction - a critical effort in combating food waste and establishing sustainable food chains. Nevertheless, a pivotal consideration for its success is the optimal design of the quantum reservoirs, ensuring both high performance and compatibility with current devices. In this paper, we provide an efficient criterion for that purpose, based on the complexity of the reservoirs. Our results emphasize the crucial role of optimal design in the algorithm performance, especially in the absence of external regressor variables, showcasing the potential for novel insights and transformative applications in the field of time series prediction using quantum computing.

Context. A solar eruption on 17 April 2021 produced a widespread Solar Energetic Particle (SEP) event that was observed by five longitudinally well-separated observers in the inner heliosphere at heliocentric distances of 0.42 to 1 au: BepiColombo, Parker Solar Probe, Solar Orbiter, STEREO A, and near-Earth spacecraft. The event produced relativistic electrons and protons. It was associated with a long-lasting solar hard X-ray flare and a medium fast Coronal Mass Ejection (CME) with a speed of 880 km/s driving a shock, an EUV wave as well as long-lasting radio burst activity showing four distinct type III burst. Methods. A multi-spacecraft analysis of remote-sensing and in-situ observations is applied to attribute the SEP observations at the different locations to the various potential source regions at the Sun. An ENLIL simulation is used to characterize the interplanetary state and its role for the energetic particle transport. The magnetic connection between each spacecraft and the Sun is determined. Based on a reconstruction of the coronal shock front we determine the times when the shock establishes magnetic connections with the different observers. Radio observations are used to characterize the directivity of the four main injection episodes, which are then employed in a 2D SEP transport simulation. Results. Timing analysis of the inferred SEP solar injection suggests different source processes being important for the electron and the proton event. Comparison among the characteristics and timing of the potential particle sources, such as the CME-driven shock or the flare, suggests a stronger shock contribution for the proton event and a more likely flare-related source of the electron event. Conclusions. We find that in this event an important ingredient for the wide SEP spread was the wide longitudinal range of about 110 degrees covered by distinct SEP injections.

The ESA-JAXA BepiColombo mission will provide simultaneous measurements from two spacecraft, offering an unprecedented opportunity to investigate magnetospheric and exospheric dynamics at Mercury as well as their interactions with the solar wind, radiation, and interplanetary dust. Many scientific instruments onboard the two spacecraft will be completely, or partially devoted to study the near-space environment of Mercury as well as the complex processes that govern it. Many issues remain unsolved even after the MESSENGER mission that ended in 2015. The specific orbits of the two spacecraft, MPO and Mio, and the comprehensive scientific payload allow a wider range of scientific questions to be addressed than those that could be achieved by the individual instruments acting alone, or by previous missions. These joint observations are of key importance because many phenomena in Mercury's environment are highly temporally and spatially variable. The Europlanet 2020 Research Infrastructure will include new Planetary Space Weather Services (PSWS) that will extend the concepts of space weather and space situational awareness to other planets in our Solar System and in particular to spacecraft that voyage through it. PSWS will make five entirely new toolkits accessible to the research community and to industrial partners planning for space missions: a general planetary space weather toolkit, as well as three toolkits dedicated to the following key planetary environments: Mars, comets, and outer planets. This will give the European planetary science community new methods, interfaces, functionalities and/or plugins dedicated to planetary space weather in the tools and models available within the partner institutes. It will also create a novel event-diary toolkit aiming at predicting and detecting planetary events like meteor showers and impacts. A variety of tools are available for tracing propagation of planetary and/or solar events through the Solar System and modelling the response of the planetary environment (surfaces, atmospheres, ionospheres, and magnetospheres) to those events. But these tools were not originally designed for planetary event prediction and space weather applications. PSWS will provide the additional research and tailoring required to apply them for these purposes. PSWS will be to review, test, improve and adapt methods and tools available within the partner institutes in order to make prototype planetary event and space weather services operational in Europe at the end of the programme. To achieve its objectives PSWS will use a few tools and standards developed for the Astronomy Virtual Observatory (VO). We numerically and experimentally investigate graphene-based optical absorbers that exploit guided mode resonances (GMRs) achieving perfect absorption over a bandwidth of few nanometers (over the visible and near-infrared ranges) with a 40-fold increase of the monolayer graphene absorption. We analyze the influence of the geometrical parameters on the absorption rate and the angular response for oblique incidence. Finally, we experimentally verify the theoretical predictions in a one-dimensional, dielectric grating and placing it near either a metallic or a dielectric mirror.

A one-dimensional dielectric grating, based on a simple geometry, is proposed and investigated to enhance light absorption in a monolayer graphene exploiting guided mode resonances. Numerical findings reveal that the optimized configuration is able to absorb up to 60% of the impinging light at normal incidence for both TE and TM polarizations resulting in a theoretical enhancement factor of about 26 with respect to the monolayer graphene absorption (about 2.3%). Experimental results confirm this behaviour showing CVD graphene absorbance peaks up to about 40% over narrow bands of few nanometers. The simple and flexible design paves the way for the realization of innovative, scalable and easy-to-fabricate graphene-based optical absorbers.

Perfect, narrow-band absorption is achieved in an asymmetric 1D photonic crystal with a monolayer graphene defect. Thanks to the large third order nonlinearity of graphene and field localization in the defect layer we demonstrate the possibility to achieve controllable, saturable absorption for the pump frequency.

We present a theoretical analysis of the effects of short range surface plasmon polariton excitation on sub-wavelength bridges in metal gratings. We show that localized resonances in thin metal bridges placed within the slit of a free-standing silver grating dramatically modify transmission spectra and boost absorption regardless of the periodicity of the grating. Additionally, the interference of multiple localized resonances makes it possible to tailor the absorption properties of ultrathin gratings, regardless of the apertures' geometrical size. This tunable, narrow-band, enhanced-absorption mechanism triggered by resonant, short range surface plasmon polaritons may also enhance nonlinear optical processes like harmonic generation, in view of the large third-order susceptibility of metals.

The inclusion of atomic inversion in Raman scattering can significantly alter field dynamics in plasmonic settings. Our calculations show that large local fields and femtosecond pulses combine to yield: (i) population inversion within hot spots; (ii) gain saturation; and (iii) conversion efficiencies characterized by a switch-like transition to the stimulated regime that spans twelve orders of magnitude. While in Raman scattering atomic inversion is usually neglected, we demonstrate that in some circumstances full accounting of the dynamics of the Bloch vector is required.

We study Raman scattering in active media placed in proximity of different types of metal nanostructures, at wavelengths that display either Fabry-Perot or plasmonic resonances, or a combination of both. We use a semi-classical approach to derive equations of motion for Stokes and anti-Stokes fields that arise from quantum fluctuations. Our calculations suggest that local field enhancement yields Stokes and anti-Stokes conversion efficiencies between five and seven orders of magnitudes larger compared to cases without the metal nanostructure. We also show that to first order in the linear susceptibility the local field correction induces a dynamic, intensity-dependent frequency detuning that at high intensities tends to quench Raman gain.

Magnetic field dependent transient solar observations are suggestive for axion-photon oscillations with light axion(-like) particle involvement. Novel dark-moon measurements with the SMART X-ray detectors can be conclusive for radiatively decaying massive exotica like the generic solar Kaluza-Klein axions. Furthermore, the predicted intrinsic strong solar magnetic fields could be the reason of enhanced low energy axion production. Such an axion component could be the as yet unknown origin of the strong quiet Sun X-ray luminosity at energies below 1 keV. Solar axion telescopes should lower their threshold, aiming to copy processes that might occur near the solar surface, be it due to spontaneous or magnetically induced radiative decay of axion(-like) particles.
