- Abstract
The article engages in a comparative analysis of efforts to pass international legislation for the conservation of wild birds in turn-of-the-century Europe. Obstacles to this project were not merely incompatible laws already existing in the involved countries, but the different ways of relating economic, moral, and aesthetic evaluations of wildlife to each other. Focusing on the stark differences between German and British approaches to the topic, the article shows how the way these categories were related to each other was a product of the involved practices shaping the experience of the natural environment. As a result of different practices, moral justifications in Britain were one form of argument among many others formulated by conservationists. The logic of discourse was cumulative, comprising of different arguments that were presented as compatible with each other. In Germany, by contrast, conservationists recognized the existence of a variety of arguments for conservation, yet emphasized the incommensurability of these arguments and commonly advanced only one argument as a valid justification. Taking the centrality of the experience of nature into account, the article argues for the expansion of the classical sociology of morality into an ecology of mind. The writings of Anne Askew and the Princess Elizabeth have received attention as two of a small number of published works by women in the Tudor period. The lengthy additions and glosses of their editor, John Bale, have garnered much less notice. Bale appropriated these writings for the use of protestant polemic, and presented their authors as exemplary historical agents worthy of emulation by men and women alike. By situating these two women in his apocalyptic rewriting of the past, he created for women a place in the new protestant history of the realm. The struggle of the True and the False Churches provided for Bale a fluid situation in which women might be required to assume behaviours typically labeled masculine; he used these writings, and the sanction of historical precedent, to advocate an active, public role for educated women.

Isotope ratios of tooth enamel from ten Early Neolithic individuals buried in a long cairn at Whitwell in central England were measured to determine where they sourced their childhood diet. Five individuals have low Sr concentrations (11–66 ppm) and high 87Sr/86Sr ratios (0.7164–0.7212). Three individuals have relatively low 87Sr/86Sr ratios (0.712–0.711) and Sr concentrations ranging between 54 and 109 ppm. Two individuals have strontium isotope values that bridge the gap between the isotope compositions of these two groups. The high 87Sr/86Sr values are rare in human enamel and exclude sources within the biosphere of central England. Oxygen isotope values are comparable to those found within human archaeological populations buried in temperate regions of Europe. The strontium isotope results should be interpreted in the context of other evidence for migration from northern France to Britain during the Early Neolithic. Translation by Madeleine Hummler.

At the very heart of the pro-Brexit narrative, currently supported by Eurosceptic politicians such as Boris Johnson, Michael Gove and David Davis, and Conservative think tanks including the Institute of Economic Affairs and Adam Smith’s Institute, is the belief that breaking European ties will enable Britain to reunite with the Anglosphere and notably its treasured ally, the United States. There are many indications that a post Brexit trade deal is in the pipeline with Donald Trump’s declaration in July 2019 that a “very substantial” trade deal was underway. Moreover, in late November 2019, Jeremy Corbyn contended that Conservatives were negotiating a secret trade deal containing clauses which would open the NHS up to American pharmaceutical companies. The central focus of this paper is thus to examine the likely consequences of a post-Brexit trade deal between the US and the UK and to consider to what extent it could undermine the UK’s ability to provide a free, universal public health service. In particular, it will examine empirical evidence on the impacts that FTAs have already had on access to medicine for countries which have been signatory to bilateral and plurilateral trade deals. Particular country contexts of price regimes for medication will be reviewed. It will also consider other FTA clauses such as public procurement and Investor State Dispute Settlement (ISDS) and their potential to disrupt national governments’ ability to protect public health service provision. Such evidence can then be used to hypothesise about the potential risks for Britain post Brexit.

This article examines the word nationality in nineteenth-century British parliamentary debates. It shows that for most of the nineteenth century, the word nationality and the associated phrase “principle of nationality” primarily featured in British parliamentary speeches concerned with international affairs as MPs formulated alternative conceptions of identity and allegiance that were more directly compatible with the more diverse ethnic, religious and national make-up of Great Britain.

International audience; Traditionally, the historiography of the historical novel and the popular novel, two genres that often overlap between the mid-nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, has overlooked their political dimension. They are often reduced to their ideological conformism, described as a consequence of their important serialization. This article proposes to nuance this position by studying the case of the Scarlet Pimpernel, one of the most famous series of British popular literature. Between 1905 and 1940, its creator, Baroness Orczy, published numerous adventures, all of which follow a similar pattern: during the French Revolution, Sir Percy Blakeney, a British nobleman who hides his identity under the name of the Scarlet Pimpernel, saves French aristocrats from the clutches of terrifying revolutionaries...Considering these counter-revolutionary foundations, this article seeks to analyze the original novels, their French translations, a number of theatrical and cinematographic adaptations, as well as their reception. The origins of this work, its use of the codes of the historical novel as much as its recourse to a history saturated with reactionary caricatures are part of the amalgamation and wide diffusion of several counter-revolutionary traditions, which are apprehended differently in France and in Great Britain.; Traditionnellement, l’historiographie du roman historique et du roman populaire, deux genres qui se confondent souvent entre le milieu du xixe et le début du xxe siècle, a peu pris en compte leur dimension politique.

The middle of the 19th century saw the total liberalization of exports in British technology while Northern Europe was becoming industrialized and a field of conquest for British engineering, then in its heyday. We would like to examine, in this context what were the various domains and developments of the contribution of British industrialists and engineers in this region, in very different socioeconomic local environments, throughout the second half of the century until the First World War. We will also focus on some of the engineers themselves, not only as representatives of a major industrial power, but also because they were men who, having their own prejudices and careers, took part in a continuous migratory movement of several hundred individuals; which raises the question of whether this human assistance to industrialization may at times have led to actual integration within the host societies.

Summary Thlaspi caerulescens J. & C. Presl. (T. alpestre L.) has a restricted and disjunct distribution in Britain. Both on natural and mine sites it is confined to soils contaminated by lead and zinc. Morphological variation occurs both regionally and locally but there is no support from a taxometric cluster analysis for the taxonomic recognition of variants. In experiment the index of zinc tolerance of plants raised from seed was positively correlated with the concentration of zinc in the soils from which the seed parents originated. The distribution of T. caerulescens is discussed in relation to morphological and physiological variation between populations.

SUMMARY Two pollen diagrams from within one metre of each other at a blanket peat site on the North York Moors are similar, and fully justify the usual practice of preparing only one diagram. There are however minor differences. These indicate the degree of random variation that can occur and should be borne in mind when interpreting pollen diagrams from blanket peat.

One problem in the study of children's games is reconstructing their history and ancestral forms. Here I will borrow tools from evolutionary biology for this purpose. I will apply this method to a well-dated corpus of a famous English nursery rhyme: The Grenadier.

Hydrological extremes, floods and droughts, cause significant economic damages and pose risks to lives worldwide. In an increasing hydro-climatic risk context as a result of climate change, this work identifies future hot-spots across Great Britain expected to be impacted by an increase in both floods and droughts. First, flood and drought hazards were defined and selected in a consistent and parallel approach with a threshold method. Then, a nation-wide systematic and robust statistical framework was developed to quantify changes in frequency, magnitude, and duration, and assess time of year for both droughts and floods, and the uncertainty associated with climate model projections. This approach was applied to a spatially-coherent statistical database of daily river flows (Future Flows Hydrology) across Great Britain to assess changes between the baseline (1961–1990) and the 2080s (2069–2098). The results showed that hydro-hazard hot-spots are likely to develop along the west coast of England and Wales and across northeast Scotland, mainly during the winter (floods) and autumn (droughts) seasons, with a higher increase in drought hazard in terms of magnitude and duration. These results suggest a need for adapting water management policies in light of climate change impact, not only on the magnitude, but also on the timing of hydro-hazard events, and future policy should account for both extremes together, alongside their potential future evolution. This novel, consistent, method is transferable to new hydro-climatic projection databases.

Event-based methods are used in flood estimation to obtain the entire flood hydrograph. Previously, such methods adopted in the UK have relied on pre-determined values of the input variables (e.g. rainfall and antecedent conditions) to a rainfall–runoff model, which is expected to result in an output flood of a particular return period. In contrast, this paper presents a method that allows all the input variables to take on values across the full range of their individual distributions. These values are then brought together in all possible combinations as input to an event-based rainfall–runoff model in a Monte Carlo simulation approach. Further, this simulation strategy produces a long string of events (on average 10 per year), where dependencies from one event to the next, as well as between different variables within a single event, are accounted for. Frequency analysis is then applied to the annual maximum peak flows and flow volumes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

SMALL birds increase their fat reserves in winter as insurance against reduced or unpredictable food supplies1: fat is accumulated daily from feeding and utilized overnight2. Field observations indicate that birds often maintain smaller reserves than expected2, which implies that there is a cost of being fat3. One such cost could be that an increased fat load reduces manoeuvrability, thus increasing the risk of predation3,4. Here we demonstrate a link between fat reserves and predation risk by describing changes in body mass (roughly equivalent to fat reserves) that have occurred in British populations of the great tit, Parus major since 1950, a period when the numbers of its principal predator, the spar-rowhawk Accipiter nisus, changed markedly. Furthermore, these changes resulted from individual tits adjusting their mass, rather than from the selection of heavier great tits by hawks.

Bruce Drexel’s narrative, which opens the first volume of The Avignon Quintet, Monsieur, paves the way for a trip down the lanes and memories of the past, preparing the reader to a textual backward journey. As he comes back to Avignon to attend the funeral of his friend, the travelling narrator is also setting out on a hidden quest which will enable him to measure the distance between reality and fiction, i.e., between his own memories of the past and their rewriting by the fictitious author Rob Sutcliffe. Exploring Sade’s hypotext therefore leads the reader into a spatial and temporal journey throughout which he discovers how Durrell resorts to Sade’s spatio-temporal architecture in order to suggest a spiritual vision of the self. The dismembered bodies of his characters do not serve to illustrate the fulfilment of jouissance but the dispersion of the ego and the birth of a new self.

Potato black dot, caused by Colletotrichum coccodes, damages tuber quality and may reduce yield. In previous work, four multimember vegetative compatibility groups (VCGs) have been reported. The objectives of the current study were to characterize a population of C. coccodes comprised of isolates from Israel and Northern Europe (EU/I) using VCG, and to assess the correlation between VCGs and aggressiveness of isolates on potato. A composite of 176 isolates was collected from symptomatic tissues of potato tubers or stems. A total of 6 (3.4%) isolates were characterized in VCG1; 29 (16.5%), 32 (18.2%), and 7 (4.0%) in VCG 2, 3, and 4, respectively; and 7 (4.0%), 9 (5.1%), 48 (27.3%), and 15 (8.5%) in the newly defined VCG 5, 6, 7, and 8, respectively. Twenty-three isolates (13%) were not assigned to any of the VCGs. Two of the VCGs had a specific geographical distribution: the 9 isolates assigned to VCG6 originated from The Netherlands, and 34 of 38 isolates assigned to VCG7 were from Scotland. Aggressiveness of isolates of a given VCG was examined on potato. VCGs 5 and 6 were comprised of the most aggressive isolates, and VCG1 of the least aggressive. These results could facilitate a more accurate evaluation of damage potential that may be caused by this pathogen.

This paper addresses ways in which the aphasic nature of the colonial archive in postcolonial Britain causes a displacement in the archival imagination as ‘elsewhere’. I use the concept of the historical elsewhere to demonstrate the deep structural patterns in the denial of the relevance of the potentially dystopic colonial archive in public historical narratives. Looking especially at the photographic archive, I explore ways in which photographs cut across these mechanisms of disavowal, as the visual both challenges the aphasic through its insistent claims to presence, and through its ambiguous relationship to the time and space that constitute the elsewhere.

Alexander Scott’s narrative of his captivity in the Sahara in the early nineteenth century presents a curious example of how information of foreign lands was received and legitimized in Britain. Through the input of individuals such as Joseph Banks and James Rennell, Scott’s tale was presented as an authoritative account of the inaccessible West African interior. This article pursues this process of authentication and demonstrates how elements of the editors” preconceived notion of the region colored the subsequent text and associated cartography.

Radar observations at 46.5 MHz of vertical-velocity perturbations at Aberystwyth (52.4°N, 4.1°W) have been used to examine the incidence of mountain waves and their dependence on local topography and the wind vector at low heights. A contrast is drawn between the effects of easterly winds passing over major topographical features to the east of the radar site and those of westerly winds crossing low coastal topographical features to the west. Estimates are made of the vertical flux of horizontal momentum associated with mountain waves, and the general influence of mountain-wave activity on vertical-velocity measurements at the site is assessed.

Session XXXII-4.

Since 1973, hCG follow up and treatment of patients with hydatidiform moles in the UK has been centralised. Registrations of moles have increased from 475 to 1248 in 2 years but histological review shows that first trimester non-molar hydropic abortions (HAs) and complete moles (CMs) are often called partial moles (PMs) by pathologists. The introduction and widespread acceptance of the term PM in 1977, coincided with improvements in ultrasound which brought forward 6 weeks the average time of evacuation of CMs, when hydrops is not yet complete but partial and when vessels are present in most CMs, leading to erroneous diagnoses of PM. Many true PMs are dismissed as HAs and often, HAs are called PMs. Valid diagnostic criteria for younger CMs and for PMs have been available for over 10 years and when used, PM is overwhelmingly associated with triploidy. Reported diploid PMs are partly explained by misdiagnosed HAs, rare cases of Beckwith-Widemann syndrome, CMs with partially developed hydrops, twin pregnancies and rare androgenetic CMs with fetal red cells in villi. A rare mole with "normal" diploid biparental karyotype probably exists but morphologically resembles CM. CM and PM have widely different prognosis but the present diagnostic confusion means much of the published epidemiological, clinical and genetic information on PM based on suspect diagnostic criteria ia also suspect.

International audience; In an increasing hydro-climatic risk context as a result of climate change, this work aims to identify future hydro-hazard hot-spots as a result of climate change across Great Britain. This approach was applied to a spatially coherent statistical database of daily river flows (Future Flows Hydrology) across Great Britain to assess changes between the baseline (1961-1990) and the 2080s (2069-2098). The results showed that hydrohazard hot-spots are likely to develop along the western coast of England and Wales and across north-eastern Scotland, mainly during the winter (floods) and autumn (droughts) seasons, with a higher increase in drought hazard in terms of magnitude and duration. These results suggest a need for adapting water management policies in light of climate change impact, not only on the magnitude, but also on the timing of hydro-hazard events, and future policy should account for both extremes together, alongside their potential future evolution.

- Abstract
Spence N. A. (1968) A multifactor uniform regionalization of British counties on the basis of employment data for 1961, Reg. Studies 2, 87–104. A more precise approach to the delimitation of regions will ensure a better understanding of specific regional frameworks consistent with their uses in achieving a set of goals. Methods and results of a study of British employment regions in 1961 are presented. The problem is one in efficient multivariate classification. Components analysis isolates the basic patterns of variation of employment characteristics over counties, and grouping analysis classifies the counties on the basis of these patterns with respect to some objective function. Non-contiguous grouping produces county employment typologies; groupings of counties with a contiguity constraint produces uniform employment regions. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

- Abstract
Lawton R. (1968) The journey to work in Britain: Some trends and problems, Reg. Studies 2, 27–40. A comparison of data on workplace and usual residence in the 1951 and 1961 Censuses shows an increase in the daily journey to work in Britain, though precise analysis is hampered by Census tabulation by local authority areas. Commuting is focused upon a relatively few jobsurplus areas in the conurbations and large towns, where it is increasing more rapidly than the growth of resident population, and where longer journeys to work are increasing the size of commuter hinterlands. In the conurbations there are differences in commuting between socioeconomic groups though all social classes are involved in movement both to the conurbation centres and to peripheral industrial areas. The difficulty of providing home and workplace together, even in New Towns, is likely to lead to further commuting which will be assisted by the general growth in car ownership. This poses problems for regional planning, but concentration of employment on growth points, drawing labour from large commuter hinterlands, may be economically beneficial, especially in Development Areas. This paper aims to show that the garden city model as defined by Ebenezer Howard and implemented by various architects, including Raymond Unwin and Barry Parker, has not generated standardised designs. We suggest that this model can on the contrary be viewed as a pool of precedents which are conducive to reinterpretation. This paper deals with the spatial and physical aspects of the garden city and on the circulation of the model between Great-Britain and the United States, from the early 20th century to the present day., Cet article vise à montrer que, loin d’avoir donné lieu à des réalisations standardisées, le modèle des cités-jardins, défini par Ebenezer Howard et mis en œuvre par différents architectes, en particulier Raymond Unwin et Barry Parker, est un réservoir de références propices à la réinterprétation. Wound infections due to Clostridium botulinum were not recognised in the UK and Republic of Ireland before 2000. C. botulinum produces a potent neurotoxin which can cause paralysis and death. In 2000 and 2001, ten cases were clinically recognised, with a further 23 in 2002, 15 in 2003 and 40 cases in 2004. All cases occurred in heroin injectors. Seventy cases occurred in England; the remainder occurred in Scotland (12 cases), Wales (2 cases) and the Republic of Ireland (4 cases). Overall, 40 (45%) of the 88 cases were laboratory confirmed by the detection of botulinum neurotoxin in serum, or by the isolation of C. botulinum from wounds. Of the 40 cases in 2004, 36 occurred in England, and of the 12 that were laboratory confirmed, 10 were due to type A. There was some geographical clustering of the cases during 2004, with most cases occurring in London and in the Yorkshire and Humberside region of northeast England.

Since the end of the 1980s, the British public sector has experienced huge changes, a mix of privatisation, restructuring and marketization. The current Conservative government’s approach to industrial relations is clearly an extension of the anti-union policies inherited from the Thatcher era, with a new law passed in 2016 that further restricts the right to strike. However, by comparison with the private sector, public sector employees still benefit from numerous collective agreements. This article explores the strategy conducted by the small union representing probation officers to oppose the restructuring programme enacted by the government in 2013 and to maintain some forms of collective bargaining at the national and workplace levels.

The response to the disaster of the clothing factories’ collapse in Savar, just outside Dhaka, in April 2013 with the loss of over 1,100 young lives, echoes the reaction to the greatest industrial calamity ever to have occurred in Britain. This took place in 1913, exactly one hundred years earlier – the Senghenydd pit disaster, which claimed the lives of 439 miners. Predictably, in the West in 2013, the conscience of the penitent cheaply clad took precedence over the actual lives of the producers of their apparel. The ‘humanitarian’ hand-wringing hides a deeper assumption, namely, that since ‘we’ have known such disasters on our journey towards prosperity, ‘they’ too, must expect a similar experience; built, as it is, into the nature of progress.

Some twenty years after the Sultan of Brunei had bestowed upon the Englishman James Brooke the title of Rajah of Sarawak, giving him extensive authorities over a large tract of land, an American, Joseph William Torrey, United States consul in Brunei, gained the right to call himself Rajah of Marudu and Ambong. Though Torrey’s efforts failed to establish a profitable business in Sabah, they formed the root of the British North Borneo Company. Torrey probably was one of the last of his kind. Elsewhere in the Pacific, European and American residents and adventurers did not bother much about native titles, expanding their hold over land and its inhabitants by economic and political manipulation. In Hawaii and Samoa political reform and becoming cabinet minister or prime minister of a still independent island state served their purposes better.
