Search

X-ray observations of galaxy clusters are routinely used to derive radial distributions of ICM thermdynamical properties such as density and temperature. However, observations allow us to access quantities projected on the celestial sphere only, so that an assumption on the 3D distribution of the ICM is necessary. Usually, spherical geometry is assumed. The aim of this paper is to determine the bias due to this approximation on the reconstruction of ICM density radial profile of a clusters sample and on the intrinsic scatter of the density profiles distribution, when clusters substructures are not masked. We used 98 simulated clusters for which we know the 3D ICM distribution drawn from The Three Hundred project. For each cluster we simulated 40 different observations by projecting the cluster along 40 different lines of sight. We extracted the ICM density profile from each observation assuming the ICM to be spherical distributed. For each line of sight we then considered the mean density profile over the sample and compared it with the 3D density profile given by the simulations. The spherical bias on the density profile is derived by considering the ratio between the observed and the input quantities. We also study the bias on the intrinsic scatter of the density profile distribution performing the same procedure. We find a bias on the density profile, $b_n$, smaller than $10\%$ for $R\lesssim R_{500}$ while it increases up to $\sim 50\%$ for larger radii. The bias on the intrinsic scatter profile, $b_s$, reaches a value of $\approx 100\%$ for $R\approx R_{500}$. The bias on both the analysed quantities strongly depends on the morphology of the objects: for clusters that do not show large scale substructures, both $b_n$ and $b_s$ are reduced by a factor 2, conversely for systems that do show large scale substructures both $b_n$ and $b_s$ increase significantly. We characterise the entropy profiles of 32 very high mass ($M_{500}>7.75\times10^{14}~M_{\odot}$) galaxy clusters (HIGHMz), selected from the CHEX-MATE sample, to study the intracluster medium (ICM) entropy distribution in a regime where non-gravitational effects are minimised. Using XMM-Newton measurements, we measure the entropy profiles up to ~$R_{500}$ for all objects. The scaled profiles exhibit large dispersion in the central regions, but converge rapidly to the expectation from pure gravitational collapse beyond the core. We quantify the correlation between the ICM morphological parameters and scaled entropy as a function of radius, showing that morphologically relaxed (disturbed) objects have low (high) central entropy. We compare our data to other observational samples, finding differences in normalisation which are linked to the average mass of the samples in question. We find that a weaker mass dependence than self-similar in the scaling (Am ~ -0.25) allows us to minimise the dispersion in the radial range [0.3-0.8]$R_{500}$ for clusters spanning over a decade in mass. The deviation from self-similarity is radially dependent and is more pronounced at small and intermediate radii than at $R_{500}$. We also investigate the distribution of central entropy $K_0$, finding no evidence for bimodality, and outer slopes $\alpha$, which peaks at ~1.1. Using weak lensing masses, we find indication for a small suppression of the scatter (~30%) beyond the core when using masses derived from Yx in the rescaling. Finally, we compare to recent cosmological numerical simulations from THE THREE HUNDRED and MACSIS, finding good agreement with our observational data. These results provide a robust observational benchmark in the gravity-dominated regime and will serve as a future reference for samples at lower mass, higher redshifts, and for ongoing work using cosmological numerical simulations., Comment: 26 pages, 18 figures, 6 tables. We present a detailed study of the gas and galaxy properties of the cluster PSZ2 G282.28+49.94 detected in the Planck all-sky survey. The intracluster medium (ICM) of this object at z=0.56 exhibits a cometary-like shape. Combining Chandra and TNG observations, we characterised the spatially resolved thermodynamical properties of the gas and the spatial and velocity distribution of 73 galaxy members. The cluster structure is quite complex with an elongated core region containing the two brightest cluster galaxies and one dense group to the south-east. Since there is no velocity difference between the core and the south-east group, we suggest the presence of a merger along the plane of the sky. This structure is related to complex X-ray and radio features, and thus the merger has likely been caught during the post-merger phase. Comparing the distribution of the ICM and of member galaxies, we find a large offset of $\sim 350$ kpc between the position of the X-ray peak and the centre of a concentration of galaxies, preceding it in the likely direction of motion. This configuration is similar to the famous Bullet Cluster, leading us to dub PSZ2 G282.28+49.94 the "Planck bullet", and represents an ideal situation to provide astrophysical constraints to the self-interaction cross-section ($\sigma/m$) of dark matter particles. These results illustrate the power of a multi-wavelength approach to probe the merging scenario of such complex and distant systems., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A

Aims. The goal of this work is to devise a description of the enrichment process in large-scale structure that explains the available observations and makes predictions for future measurements. Methods. We took a spartan approach to this study, employing observational results and algebra to connect stellar assembly in star-forming halos with metal enrichment of the intra-cluster and group medium. Results. On one hand, our construct is the first to provide an explanation for much of the phenomenology of metal enrichment in clusters and groups. It sheds light on the lack of redshift evolution in metal abundance, as well as the small scatter of metal abundance profiles, the entropy versus abundance anti-correlation found in cool core clusters, and the so-called Fe conundrum, along with several other aspects of cluster enrichment. On the other hand, it also allows us to infer the properties of other constituents of large-scale structure. We find that gas that is not bound to halos must have a metal abundance similar to that of the ICM and only about one-seventh to one-third of the Fe in the Universe is locked in stars. A comparable amount is found in gas in groups and clusters and, lastly and most importantly, about three-fifths of the total Fe is contained in a tenuous warm or hot gaseous medium in or between galaxies. We point out that several of our results follow from two critical but well motivated assumptions: 1) the stellar mass in massive halos is currently underestimated and 2) the adopted Fe yield is only marginally consistent with predictions from synthesis models and SN rates. Conclusions. One of the most appealing features of the work presented here is that it provides an observationally grounded construct where vital questions on chemical enrichment in the large-scale structure can be addressed. The connection between the thermal and non-thermal properties in galaxy clusters hosting radio halos seems fairly well established. However, a comprehensive analysis of such a connection has been made only for integrated quantities (e.g. $L_X - P_{radio}$ relation). In recent years new-generation radio telescopes have enabled the unprecedented possibility to study the non-thermal properties of galaxy clusters on a spatially resolved basis. Here, we perform a pilot study to investigate the mentioned properties on five targets, by combining X-ray data from the CHEX-MATE project with the second data release from the LOFAR Two meter Sky survey. We find a strong correlation ($r_s \sim 0.7$) with a slope less than unity between the radio and X-ray surface brightness. We also report differences in the spatially resolved properties of the radio emission in clusters which show different levels of dynamical disturbance. In particular, less perturbed clusters (according to X-ray parameters) show peaked radio profiles in the centre, with a flattening in the outer regions, while the three dynamically disturbed clusters have steeper profiles in the outer regions. We fit a model to the radio emission in the context of turbulent re-acceleration with a constant ratio between thermal and non-thermal particles energy density and a magnetic field profile linked to the thermal gas density as $B(r) \propto n_{th}^{0.5}$. The "Cluster HEritage project with \xmm: Mass Assembly and Thermodynamics at the Endpoint of structure formation" (CHEX-MATE) is a multi-year Heritage program, to obtain homogeneous XMM-Newton observations of a representative sample of 118 galaxy clusters. The observations are tuned to reconstruct the distribution of the main thermodynamic quantities of the ICM up to $R_{500}$ and to obtain individual mass measurements, via the hydrostatic-equilibrium equation, with a precision of 15-20%. Temperature profiles are a necessary ingredient for the scientific goals of the project and it is thus crucial to derive the best possible temperature measurements from our data. This is why we have built a new pipeline for spectral extraction and analysis of XMM-Newton data, based on a new physically motivated background model and on a Bayesian approach with Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) methods, that we present in this paper for the first time. We applied this new method to a subset of 30 galaxy clusters representative of the CHEX-MATE sample and show that we can obtain reliable temperature measurements up to regions where the source intensity is as low as 20% of the background, keeping systematic errors below 10%. We compare the median profile of our sample and the best fit slope at large radii with literature results and we find a good agreement with other measurements based on XMM-Newton data. Conversely, when we exclude from our analysis the most contaminated regions, where the source intensity is below 20 of the background, we find significantly flatter profiles, in agreement with predictions from numerical simulations and independent measurements with a combination of Sunyaev-Zeldovich and X-ray imaging data., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics. We study the perturbations in the temperature (and density) distribution for 28 clusters selected from the CHEX-MATE sample to evaluate and characterize the level of inhomogeneities and the related dynamical state of the ICM. We use these spatially resolved 2D distributions to measure the global and radial scatter and identify the regions that deviate the most from the average distribution. During this process, we introduce three dynamical state estimators and produce clean temperature profiles after removing the most deviant regions. We find that the temperature distribution of most of the clusters is skewed towards high temperatures and is well described by a log-normal function. There is no indication that the number of regions deviating more than 1$\sigma$ from the azimuthal value is correlated with the dynamical state inferred from morphological estimators. The removal of these regions leads to local temperature variations up to 10-20% and an average increase of $\sim$5% in the overall cluster temperatures. The measured relative intrinsic scatter within $R_{500}$, $\sigma_{T,int}/T$, has values of 0.17$^{+0.08}_{-0.05}$, and is almost independent of the cluster mass and dynamical state. Comparing the scatter of temperature and density profiles to hydrodynamic simulations, we constrain the average Mach number regime of the sample to $M_{3D}$=0.36$^{+0.16}_{-0.09}$. We infer the ratio between the energy in turbulence and the thermal energy, and translate this ratio in terms of a predicted hydrostatic mass bias $b$, estimating an average value of $b\sim$0.11 (covering a range between 0 and 0.37) within $R_{500}$. Turbulence introduced into the intra-cluster medium (ICM) through cluster merger events transfers energy to non-thermal components, and can trigger the formation of diffuse synchrotron radio sources. Typical diffuse sources in the forms of giant radio halos and mini-halos are found in merging and relaxed cool core galaxy clusters, respectively. On the other hand, recent observations have revealed an increasing complexity of the non-thermal phenomenology. Abell 2142 (A2142) is a mildly disturbed cluster that exhibits uncommon thermal and non-thermal properties. It is known to host a hybrid halo consisting of two components (H1 and H2), namely a mini-halo-like and an enigmatic elongated radio halo-like structure. We aim to investigate the properties, origin, and connections of each component. We present deep LOFAR observations of A2142 in the frequency ranges $30-78$ MHz and $120-168$ MHz. With complementary multi-frequency radio and X-ray data, we analyse the radio spectral properties of the halo and assess the connection between the non-thermal and thermal components of the ICM. We detected a third radio component (H3), which extends over the cluster volume on scales $\sim 2$ Mpc, embeds H1 and H2, and has a morphology that roughly follows the thermal ICM distribution. The radio spectral index is moderately steep in H1 ($\alpha=1.09\pm 0.02$) and H2 ($\alpha=1.15\pm 0.02$), but is steeper ($\alpha=1.57\pm 0.20$) in H3. The analysis of the thermal and non-thermal properties allowed us to discuss possible formation scenarios for each radio component. Turbulence from sloshing motions of low-entropy gas on different scales may be responsible for the origin of H1 and H2. We investigate the statistical properties and the origin of the scatter within the spatially resolved surface brightness profiles of the CHEX-MATE sample, formed by 118 galaxy clusters selected via the SZ effect. These objects have been drawn from the Planck SZ catalogue and cover a wide range of masses, M$_{500}=[2-15] \times 10^{14} $M$_{\odot}$, and redshift, z=[0.05,0.6]. We derived the surface brightness and emission measure profiles and determined the statistical properties of the full sample. We found that there is a critical scale, R$\sim 0.4 R_{500}$, within which morphologically relaxed and disturbed object profiles diverge. The median of each sub-sample differs by a factor of $\sim 10$ at $0.05\,R_{500}$. There are no significant differences between mass- and redshift-selected sub-samples once proper scaling is applied. We compare CHEX-MATE with a sample of 115 clusters drawn from the The Three Hundred suite of cosmological simulations. We found that simulated emission measure profiles are systematically steeper than those of observations. For the first time, the simulations were used to break down the components causing the scatter between the profiles. We investigated the behaviour of the scatter due to object-by-object variation. We found that the high scatter, approximately 110%, at $R<0.4R_{500}$ is due to a genuine difference between the distribution of the gas in the core. The intermediate scale, $R_{500} =[0.4-0.8]$, is characterised by the minimum value of the scatter on the order of 0.56, indicating a region where cluster profiles are the closest to the self-similar regime. Larger scales are characterised by increasing scatter due to the complex spatial distribution of the gas. Also for the first time, we verify that the scatter due to projection effects is smaller than the scatter due to genuine object-by-object variation in all the considered scales. Context. Abell 1213, a low-richness galaxy system, is known to host an anomalous radio halo detected in data of the VLA. It is an outlier with regard to the relation between the radio halo power and the X-ray luminosity of the parent clusters. Aims. Our aim is to analyze the cluster in the optical, X-ray, and radio bands to characterize the environment of its diffuse radio emission and to shed new light on its nature. Methods. We used optical data from the SDSS to study the internal dynamics of the cluster. We also analyzed archival XMM-Newton X-ray data to unveil the properties of its hot intracluster medium. Finally, we used recent data from LOFAR at 144 MHz, together with VLA data at 1.4 GHz, to study the spectral behavior of the diffuse radio source. Results. Both our optical and X-ray analysis reveal that this low-mass cluster exhibits disturbed dynamics. In fact, it is composed of several galaxy groups in the peripheral regions and, in particular, in the core, where we find evidence of substructures oriented in the NE-SW direction, with hints of a merger nearly along the line of sight. The analysis of the X-ray emission adds further evidence that the cluster is in an unrelaxed dynamical state. At radio wavelengths, the LOFAR data show that the diffuse emission is ~510 kpc in size. Moreover, there are hints of low-surface-brightness emission permeating the cluster center. Conclusions. The environment of the diffuse radio emission is not what we would expect for a classical halo. The spectral index map of the radio source is compatible with a relic interpretation, possibly due to a merger in the N-S or NE-SW directions, in agreement with the substructures detected through the optical analysis. In this work we address the issue of whether the division of clusters in cool cores (CCs) and non-cool cores (NCCs) is due to a primordial difference or to how clusters evolve across cosmic time. Our first goal is to establish if spectra from the central regions of a subclass of NCCs known as cool core remnants (CCRs) are consistent with having a small but significant amount of short cooling time gas, thereby allowing a transformation to CC systems on a timescale of a giga year. Our second goal is to determine if low ionization Fe lines emitted from this residual cool gas will be detectable by the calorimeters that will fly on board XRISM and ATHENA. We performed a spectral analysis of CCR systems with a multi temperature model and, assuming the different components to be in pressure equilibrium with one another, derived entropy and cooling time distributions for the X-ray emitting gas. We find that in most of our systems, the spectral model allows for a fraction of low entropy, short cooling time gas with a mass that is comparable to the one in CC systems. Moreover, simulations show that future spectrometers on board XRISM and ATHENA will have the power to directly resolve emission lines from the low temperature gas, thereby providing incontrovertible evidence for its presence. Within the scenario that we have explored, the constant fraction of CCs measured across cosmic time emerges from a dynamical equilibrium where CCs transformed in NCCs through mergers are balanced by NCCs that revert to CCs. In intermediate-temperature (T = 2.5 - 4.5 keV) galaxy clusters, abundance measurements are almost-equally driven by Fe K and L transitions, at $\sim$ 6.7 keV and 0.9 - 1.3 keV, respectively. While K-shell-derived measurements are considered reliable, the resolution of the currently available instrumentation, as well as our current knowledge of the atomic processes, makes the modelling of the L-line complex challenging, resulting in potential biases for abundance measurements. In this work, we study systematics related to the modelling of the Fe L-line complex that may influence iron-abundance measurements in the intermediate-temperature range. To this aim, we select a sample of three bright galaxy clusters, with long XMM-Newton observations available and temperature in the 2.5 - 4.5 keV range. We fit spectra extracted from concentric rings with APEC and APEC+APEC models, by alternatively excluding the L and K bands, and derive the fractional difference of the metal abundances, $\Delta Z/Z$, as indication of the consistency between K- and L-shell-derived measurements. The $\Delta Z/Z$ distribution is then studied as a function of the cluster radius, ring temperature and X-ray flux. The L-induced systematics, measured through an individual fit of each MOS and pn spectrum, remain constant at a 5 - 6% value in the whole 2.5 - 4.5 keV temperature range. Conversely, a joint fit of MOS and pn spectra leads to a slight excess of 1 - 2% in the above estimate. No significant dependence on the ring X-ray flux is highlighted. The measured 5 - 8% value indicates a modest contribution of the systematics to the derived iron abundances, giving confidence for future measurements. To date, these findings represent the best-achievable estimate of the systematics in analysis, while future microcalorimeters will significantly improve our understanding of the atomic processes underlying the Fe L emissions., Comment: 12 pages, 7 figures, 5 tables. Clusters of galaxies evolve and accrete mass, mostly from small galaxy systems. Our aim is to study the velocity field of the galaxy cluster Abell 780, which is known for the powerful radio source Hydra A at its center and where a spectacular X-ray tail associated with the galaxy LEDA 87445 has been discovered. Our analysis is based on the new spectroscopic data for hundreds of galaxies obtained with the Italian Telescopio Nazionale {\em Galileo} and the Very Large Telescope. We have constructed a redshift catalog of 623 galaxies and selected a sample of 126 cluster members. We analyze the internal structure of the cluster using a number of techniques. We estimate the mean redshift z=0.0545, the line-of-sight velocity dispersion sigmav about 800 km/s, and the dynamical mass M200 about 5.4 10E14 solar masses. The global properties of Abell 780 are typical of relaxed clusters. On a smaller scale, we can detect the presence of a galaxy group associated with LEDA 87445 in projected phase space. The mean velocity and position of the center of the group agree well with the velocity and position of LEDA 87445. We estimate the following parameters of the collision. The group is characterized by a higher velocity relative to the main system. It is infalling at a rest frame velocity of Vrf=+870 km/s and lies at a projected distance D=1.1 Mpc to the south, slightly southeast of the cluster center. The mass ratio between the group and the cluster is about 1:5. We also find evidence of an asymmetry in the velocity distribution of galaxies in the inner cluster region, which might be related to a small low-velocity group detected as a substructure at Vrf=-750 km/s. We present the characterisation of the massive cluster ClG-J$104803.7+313843$ at $z=0.76$ performed using a serendipitous XMM-Newton observation. High redshift and massive objects represent an ideal laboratory to benchmark our understanding of how cluster form and assembly formation driven mainly by gravity.Leveraging the high throughput of XMM-Newton we were firstly able to determine the redshift of the object, shedding light on ambiguous photometric redshift associations. We investigated the morphology of this cluster which shows signs of merging activities in the outskirts and a flat core. We also measured the radial density profile up to $R_{500}$. With these quantities in hand, we were able to determine the mass, $M_{500}=5.64^{+0.79}_{-0.62} \times 10^{14}M_{\odot}$, using the YX proxy. This quantity improves previous measurement of the mass of this object by a factor of $\sim 3.5$. The characterisation of one cluster at such mass and redshift regime is fundamental as these objects are intrinsically rare, the number of objects discovered so far being less than $\sim 25$. Our study highlights the importance of using X-ray observations in combination with ancillary multi-wavelength data to improve our understanding of high-z and massive clusters, Comment: Submitted to A&A

The Cluster HEritage project with XMM-Newton - Mass Assembly and Thermodynamics at the Endpoint of structure formation (CHEX-MATE) is a three mega-second Multi-Year Heritage Programme to obtain X-ray observations of a minimally-biased, signal-to-noise limited sample of 118 galaxy clusters detected by Planck through the Sunyaev-Zeldovich effect. The programme, described in detail in this paper, aims to study the ultimate products of structure formation in time and mass. It is composed of a census of the most recent objects to have formed (Tier-1: 0.05 < z < 0.2; 2 x 10e14 M_sun < M_500 < 9 x 10e14 M_sun), together with a sample of the highest-mass objects in the Universe (Tier-2: z < 0.6; M_500 > 7.25 x 10e14 M_sun). The programme will yield an accurate vision of the statistical properties of the underlying population, measure how the gas properties are shaped by collapse into the dark matter halo, uncover the provenance of non-gravitational heating, and resolve the major uncertainties in mass determination that limit the use of clusters for cosmological parameter estimation. We will acquire X-ray exposures of uniform depth, designed to obtain individual mass measurements accurate to 15-20% under the hydrostatic assumption. Diffuse radio emission associated with the intra-cluster medium (ICM) is observed in a number of merging galaxy clusters. It is currently believed that in mergers a fraction of the kinetic energy is channeled into non-thermal components, such as turbulence, cosmic rays and magnetic fields, that may lead to the formation of giant synchrotron sources in the ICM. Studying merging galaxy clusters in different evolutionary phases is fundamental to understanding the origin of radio emission in the ICM. We observed the nearby galaxy cluster pair RXC J1825.3+3026 ($z\sim0.065$) and CIZA J1824.1+3029 ($z\sim0.071$) at 120-168 MHz with the LOw Frequency ARray (LOFAR) and made use of a deep (240 ks) XMM-Newton dataset to study the non-thermal and thermal properties of the system. RXC J1825.3+3026 is in a complex dynamical state, with a primary on-going merger in the E-W direction and a secondary later stage merger with a group of galaxies in the SW, while CIZA J1824.1+3029 is dynamically relaxed. These two clusters are in a pre-merger phase. We report the discovery of a Mpc-scale radio halo with a low surface brightness extension in RXC J1825.3+3026 that follows the X-ray emission from the cluster center to the remnant of a galaxy group in the SW. This is among the least massive systems and the faintest giant radio halo known to date. Contrary to this, no diffuse radio emission is observed in CIZA J1824.1+3029 nor in the region between the pre-merger cluster pair. The power spectra of the X-ray surface brightness fluctuations of RXC J1825.3+3026 and CIZA J1824.1+3029 are in agreement with the findings for clusters exhibiting a radio halo and the ones where no radio emission has been detected, respectively. Nearby clusters of galaxies, z<0.1, are cosmic structures still under formation. Understanding the thermodynamic properties of merging clusters can provide crucial information on how they grow in the local universe. A detailed study of the intra-cluster medium (ICM) properties of un-relaxed systems is essential to understand the fate of in-falling structures and, more generally, the virialization process. We analyzed a mosaic of XMM-Newton observations (240 ks) of the Lyra system (z=0.067) that shows a complex dynamical state. We find the main cluster RXC J1825.3+3026 to be in a late merger phase, whereas its companion CIZA J1824.1+3029 is a relaxed cool-core cluster. We estimate a mass ratio of ~1:2 for the pair. No diffuse X-ray emission is found in the region between them, indicating that these clusters are in a pre-merger phase. We found evidence of a galaxy group infalling on RXC J1825.3+3026 in an advanced state of disruption. The Southern Galaxy, one of the brightest galaxies in the Lyra complex, was very likely at the center of the infalling group. This galaxy has a gaseous corona indicating that it was able to retain some of its gas after the ram-pressure stripping of the intra-group medium. In this scenario the diffuse emission excess observed southwest of RXC J1825.3+3026 could be due to gas once belonging to the group and/or to cluster ICM dislocated by the passage of the group. Finally, we identified three high-velocity galaxies aligned between RXC J1825.3+3026 and the SG, two of these showing evidence of gas stripped from them during infall. We estimate them to be currently falling onto the main cluster at an infall velocity of ~ 3000 km/s. The formation of cosmic structure culminates with the assembly of galaxy clusters, a process quite different from cluster to cluster. We present the study of the structure and dynamics of the Lyra complex formed of the two clusters RXC J1825.3+3026 and CIZA J1824.1+3029, very recently studied using both X-ray and radio data. This is the first analysis based on kinematics of member galaxies. New spectroscopic data for 285 galaxies were acquired at the Italian Telescopio Nazionale Galileo and used in combination with PanSTARRS photometry. The result of our member selection is a sample of 198 galaxies. For RXCJ1825 and CIZAJ1824 we report the redshifts, z=0.0645 and z=0.0708, the first estimates of velocity dispersion, sigmav=995 and 700 km/s, and dynamical mass, M200=1.1E15 and 4E14 Msun. The past assembly of RXCJ1825 is traced by the two dominant galaxies, both aligned with the major axis of the galaxy distribution along the East-West direction, and by a minor North-East substructure. We also detect a quite peculiar high velocity field in the South-West region of the Lyra complex. This feature is likely related to a high velocity, very luminous galaxy, suggested to be the central galaxy of a group in interaction with RXCJ1825 by very recent studies based on X-ray and radio data. The redshift of the whole Lyra complex is z=0.067. Assuming that the redshift difference between RXCJ1825 and CIZAJ1824 is due to the relative kinematics, the projected distance between the cluster centers is 1.3 Mpc and the los velocity difference is 1750 km/s. A dynamical analysis of the system shows that the two clusters are likely to be gravitationally bound, in a pre-merger phase, with CIZAJ1824 in front of RXCJ1825 and going toward it. We present the results of a joint XMM-Newton and NuSTAR observation (200 ks) of the galaxy cluster Abell 523 at $z=0.104$. The peculiar morphology of the cluster radio halo and its outlier position in the radio power P(1.4 GHz) - X-ray luminosity plane make it an ideal candidate for the study of radio-X-ray correlations and for the search of inverse Compton (IC) emission. We constructed thermodynamic maps derived from the XMM observations to describe in detail the physical and dynamical state of the ICM. We performed a point-to-point comparison in terms of surface brightness between the X-ray and radio emissions, to quantify their morphological discrepancies. Making use of NuSTAR's hard X-ray focusing capability, we looked for IC emission both globally and locally, after modeling the purely thermal component with a multi-temperature description. The thermodynamic maps suggest the presence of a secondary merging process that could be responsible for the peculiar radio halo morphology. This hypothesis is supported by the comparison between the X-ray and radio surface brightnesses, which shows a broad intrinsic scatter and a series of outliers. The global NuSTAR spectrum can be explained by purely thermal gas emission, and there is no convincing evidence that an IC component is needed. The $3\sigma$ upper limit on the IC flux in the 20-80 keV band is in the range $\left[2.2 - 4.0\right] \times 10^{-13} \, \mathrm{erg} \, \mathrm{s}^{-1} \, \mathrm{cm}^{-2}$, implying a lower limit on the magnetic field strength in the range $B > [0.23 - 0.31] \, \mu G$. Locally, we looked for IC emission in the central region of the cluster radio halo finding a $3\sigma$ upper limit on the 20-80 keV non-thermal flux of $3.17 \times 10^{-14} \, \mathrm{erg} \, \mathrm{s}^{-1} \, \mathrm{cm}^{-2}$, corresponding to a lower limit on the magnetic field strength of $B \gtrsim 0.81 \, \mu G$., Comment: 20 pages, 37 figures, 6 tables; accepted for publication in A&A

The hot plasma in galaxy clusters is expected to be heated to high temperatures through shocks and adiabatic compression. The thermodynamical properties of the gas encode information on the processes leading to the thermalization of the gas in the cluster's potential well as well as non-gravitational processes such as gas cooling, AGN feedback and kinetic energy. In this work we present the radial profiles of the thermodynamic properties of the intracluster medium (ICM) out to the virial radius for a sample of 12 galaxy clusters selected from the Planck all-sky survey. We determine the universal profiles of gas density, temperature, pressure, and entropy over more than two decades in radius. We exploit jointly X-ray information from XMM and Sunyaev-Zel'dovich constraints from Planck to recover thermodynamic properties out to 2 R500. We provide average functional forms for the radial dependence of the main quantities and quantify the slope and intrinsic scatter of the population as a function of radius. We find that gas density and pressure profiles steepen steadily with radius, in excellent agreement with previous observational results. Entropy profiles beyond R500 closely follow the predictions for the gravitational collapse of structures. The scatter in all thermodynamical quantities reaches a minimum in the range [0.2-0.8] R500 and increases outwards. Somewhat surprisingly, we find that pressure is substantially more scattered than temperature and density. Our results indicate that once accreting substructures are properly excised, the properties of the ICM beyond the cooling region R > 0.3 R500) follow remarkably well the predictions of simple gravitational collapse and require little non-gravitational corrections., Comment: 30 pages, 17 figures, 5 tables. Galaxy clusters are the endpoints of structure formation and are continuously growing through the merging and accretion of smaller structures. Numerical simulations predict that a fraction of their energy content is not yet thermalized, mainly in the form of kinetic motions (turbulence, bulk motions). Measuring the level of non-thermal pressure support is necessary to understand the processes leading to the virialization of the gas within the potential well of the main halo and to calibrate the biases in hydrostatic mass estimates. We present high-quality measurements of hydrostatic masses and intracluster gas fraction out to the virial radius for a sample of 12 nearby clusters with available XMM-Newton and Planck data. We compare our hydrostatic gas fractions with the expected universal gas fraction to constrain the level of non-thermal pressure support. We find that hydrostatic masses require little correction and infer a median non-thermal pressure fraction of $\sim6\%$ and $\sim10\%$ at $R_{500}$ and $R_{200}$, respectively. Our values are lower than the expectations of hydrodynamical simulations, possibly implying a faster thermalization of the gas. If instead we use the mass calibration adopted by the Planck team, we find that the gas fraction of massive local systems implies a mass bias $1-b=0.85\pm0.05$ for SZ-derived masses, with some evidence for a mass-dependent bias. Conversely, the high bias required to match Planck CMB and cluster count cosmology is excluded by the data at high significance, unless the most massive halos are missing a substantial fraction of their baryons., Comment: 11 pages, 7 figures, A&A in press. We investigate the relationship between X-ray cooling and star formation in brightest cluster galaxies (BCGs). We present an X-ray spectral analysis of the inner regions, 10-40 kpc, of six nearby cool core clusters (z<0.35) observed with Chandra ACIS. This sample is selected on the basis of the high star formation rate (SFR) observed in the BCGs. We restrict our search for cooling gas to regions that are roughly cospatial with the starburst. We fit single- and multi-temperature mkcflow models to constrain the amount of isobarically cooling intracluster medium (ICM). We find that in all clusters, below a threshold temperature ranging between 0.9 and 3 keV, only upper limits can be obtained. In four out of six objects, the upper limits are significantly below the SFR and in two, namely A1835 and A1068, they are less than a tenth of the SFR. Our results suggests that a number of mechanisms conspire to hide the cooling signature in our spectra. In a few systems the lack of a cooling signature may be attributed to a relatively long delay time between the X-ray cooling and the star burst. However, for A1835 and A1068, where the X-ray cooling time is shorter than the timescale of the starburst, a possible explanation is that the region where gas cools out of the X-ray phase extends to very large radii, likely beyond the core of these systems., Comment: to appear in A&A

In the current epoch, one of the main mechanisms driving the growth of galaxy clusters is the continuous accretion of group-scale halos. In this process, the ram pressure applied by the hot intracluster medium on the gas content of the infalling group is responsible for stripping the gas from its dark-matter halo, which gradually leads to the virialization of the infalling gas in the potential well of the main cluster. Using deep wide-field observations of the poor cluster Hydra A/A780 with XMM-Newton and Suzaku, we report the discovery of an infalling galaxy group 1.1 Mpc south of the cluster core. The presence of a substructure is confirmed by a dynamical study of the galaxies in this region. A wake of stripped gas is trailing behind the group over a projected scale of 760 kpc. The temperature of the gas along the wake is constant at kT ~ 1.3 keV, which is about a factor of two less than the temperature of the surrounding plasma. We observe a cold front pointing westwards compared to the peak of the group, which indicates that the group is currently not moving in the direction of the main cluster, but is moving along an almost circular orbit. The overall morphology of the group bears remarkable similarities with high-resolution numerical simulations of such structures, which greatly strengthens our understanding of the ram-pressure stripping process., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysics

We want to characterize the dynamical state of galaxy clusters detected with the Sunyaev-Zeldovich (SZ) effect by Planck and compare them with the dynamical state of clusters selected in X-rays survey. We analyzed a representative subsample of the Planck SZ catalogue, containing the 132 clusters with the highest signal to noise ratio and characterize their dynamical state using as indicator the projected offset between the peak of the X-ray emission and the position of the Brightest cluster galaxy. We study the distribution of our indicator in our sample and compare it to its distribution in X-ray selected samples (HIFLUGCS, MACS and REXCESS). The distributions are significantly different and the fraction of relaxed objects is smaller in the Planck sample ($52 \pm 4 \%$) than in X-ray samples ($\simeq 74\%$) We interpret this result as an indication of different selection effects affecting X-rays (e.g. "cool core bias") and SZ surveys of galaxy clusters., Comment: Submitted to MNRAS. Our goal is to provide a robust estimate of the metal content of the ICM in massive clusters. We make use of published abundance profiles for a sample of ~60 nearby systems, we include in our estimate uncertainties associated to the measurement process and to the almost total lack of measures in cluster outskirts. We perform a first, albeit rough, census of metals finding that the mean abundance of the ICM within r_180 is very poorly constrained, 0.06Z_sol < Z < 0.26Z_sol, and presents no tension with expectations. Similarly, the question of if and how the bulk of the metal content in clusters varies with cosmic time, is very much an open one. A solid estimate of abundances in cluster outskirts could be achieved by combining observations of the two experiments which will operate on board Athena, the XIFU and the WFI, provided they do not fall victim to the de-scoping process that has afflicted several space observatories over the last decade., Comment: accepted in A&A main journal

(Abridged) We present a spectral analysis of a deep (220 ks) XMM-Newton observation of the Phoenix cluster (SPT-CL J2344-4243), which we also combine with Chandra archival ACIS-I data. We extract CCD and RGS X-ray spectra from the core region to search for the signature of cold gas, and constrain the mass deposition rate in the cooling flow which is thought to be responsible of the massive star formation episode observed in the BCG. We find an average mass deposition rate of $\dot M = 620 (-190 +200)_{stat} (-50 +150)_{syst} M_\odot$/yr in the temperature range 0.3-3.0 keV from MOS data. A temperature-resolved analysis shows that a significant amount of gas is deposited only above 1.8 keV, while upper limits of the order of hundreds of $M_\odot$/yr can be put in the 0.3-1.8 keV temperature range. From pn data we obtain $\dot M = 210 (-80 +85)_{stat} ( -35 +60)_{syst} M_\odot$/yr, and the upper limits from the temperature-resolved analysis are typically a factor of 3 lower than MOS data. In the RGS spectrum, no line emission from ionization states below Fe XXIII is seen above $12 \AA$, and the amount of gas cooling below $\sim 3$ keV has a best-fit value $\dot M = 122_{-122}^{+343}$ $M_{\odot}$/yr. In addition, our analysis of the FIR SED of the BCG based on Herschel data provides $SFR = (530 \pm 50) M_\odot$/yr, significantly lower than previous estimates by a factor 1.5. Current data are able to firmly identify substantial amount of cooling gas only above 1.8 keV in the core of the Phoenix cluster. While MOS data analysis is consistent with values as high as $\dot M \sim 1000$ within $1 \sigma$, pn data provide $\dot M < 500 M_\odot$ yr$^{-1}$ at $3\sigma$ c.l. at temperature below 1.8 keV. We present the first pointed X-ray observations of 10 candidate fossil galaxy groups and clusters. With these Suzaku observations, we determine global temperatures and bolometric X-ray luminosities of the intracluster medium (ICM) out to $r_{500}$ for six systems in our sample. The remaining four systems show signs of significant contamination from non-ICM sources. For the six objects with successfully determined $r_{500}$ properties, we measure global temperatures in the range $2.8 \leq T_{\mathrm{X}} \leq 5.3 \ \mathrm{keV}$, bolometric X-ray luminosities of $0.8 \times 10^{44} \ \leq L_{\mathrm{X,bol}} \leq 7.7\times 10^{44} \ \mathrm{erg} \ \mathrm{s}^{-1}$, and estimate masses, as derived from $T_{\mathrm{X}}$, of $M_{500} > 10^{14} \ \mathrm{M}_{\odot}$. Fossil cluster scaling relations are constructed for a sample that combines our Suzaku observed fossils with fossils in the literature. Using measurements of global X-ray luminosity, temperature, optical luminosity, and velocity dispersion, scaling relations for the fossil sample are then compared with a control sample of non-fossil systems. We find the fits of our fossil cluster scaling relations are consistent with the relations for normal groups and clusters, indicating fossil clusters have global ICM X-ray properties similar to those of comparable mass non-fossil systems., Comment: 17 pages, 7 figures, 8 tables. We aim to review the internal structure and dynamics of the Abell 1351 cluster, shown to host a radio halo with a quite irregular shape. Our analysis is based on radial velocity data for 135 galaxies obtained at the Telescopio Nazionale Galileo. We combine galaxy velocities and positions to select 95 cluster galaxy members and analyse the internal dynamics of the whole cluster. We also examine X-ray data retrieved from Chandra and XMM archives. We measure the cluster redshift, =0.325, the line-of-sight (LOS) velocity dispersion, \sigma_v~1500 km/s, and the X-ray temperature, kT~9 keV. From both X-ray and optical data independently, we estimate a large cluster mass, in the 1--4 $10^{15}$ M$_\odot$ range. We attribute the extremely high value of \sigma_v to the bimodality in the velocity distribution. We find evidence of a significant velocity gradient and optical 3D substructure. The X-ray analysis also shows many features in favour of a complex cluster structure, probably supporting an ongoing merger of substructures in Abell 1351. The observational scenario agrees with the presence of two main subclusters in the northern region, each with its brightest galaxy (BCG1 and BCG2), detected as the two most important X-ray substructures with a rest-frame LOS velocity difference of \Delta v~2500 km/s (in the rest frame) and probably being in large part aligned with the LOS. We conclude that Abell 1351 is a massive merging cluster. The details of the cluster structure allow us to interpret the quite asymmetric radio halo as a `normal' halo plus a southern relic, strongly supporting a previous suggestion based only on inspection of radio and preliminary X-ray data., Comment: 13 pages, 13 figures, 1 table

This study is part of the FOssil Groups Origin (FOGO) project which aims at carrying out a systematic and multiwavelength study of a large sample of fossil systems. Here we focus on the relation between the optical luminosity (Lopt) and X-ray luminosity (Lx). Out of a sample of 28 candidate fossil systems, we consider a sample of 12 systems whose fossil classification has been confirmed by a companion study. They are compared with the complementary sample of 16 systems whose fossil nature is not confirmed and with a subsample of 102 galaxy systems from the RASS-SDSS galaxy cluster survey. As the nodes of the cosmic web, clusters of galaxies trace the large-scale distribution of matter in the Universe. They are thus privileged sites in which to investigate the complex physics of structure formation. However, the complete story of how these structures grow, and how they dissipate the gravitational and non-thermal components of their energy budget over cosmic time, is still beyond our grasp. Fundamental questions such as How do hot diffuse baryons accrete and dynamically evolve in dark matter potentials? How and when was the energy that we observe in the ICM generated and distributed? Where and when are heavy elements produced and how are they circulated? are still unanswered. Most of the cluster baryons exists in the form of a diffuse, hot, metal-enriched plasma that radiates primarily in the X-ray band (the intracluster medium, ICM), allowing the X-ray observations of the evolving cluster population to provide a unique opportunity to address these topics. Athena+ with its large collecting area and unprecedented combination of high spectral and angular resolution offers the only way to make major advances in answering these questions. Athena+ will show how the baryonic gas evolves in the dark matter potential wells by studying the motions and turbulence in the ICM. Athena+ will be able to resolve the accreting region both spatially and spectroscopically, probing the true nature and physical state of the X-ray emitting plasma. We present results obtained with a new XMM-Newton observation of A2142, a famous textbook example of cluster with multiple cold fronts, which has been studied in detail with Chandra but whose large scale properties are presented here for the first time. We report the discovery of a a new cold front, the most distant one ever detected in a galaxy cluster, at about one Mpc from the center to the SE. Residual images, thermodynamics and metal abundance maps are qualitatively in agreement with predictions from numerical simulations of the sloshing phenomenon. However, the scales involved are much larger, similarly to what recently observed in the Perseus cluster. These results show that sloshing is a cluster-wide phenomenon, not confined in the cores, which extends well beyond the cooling region involving a large fraction of the ICM up to almost half of the virial radius. The absence of a cool core and a newly discovered giant radio halo in A2142, in spite of its relaxed X-ray morphology, suggest that large scale sloshing, or the intermediate merger which caused it, may trigger Mpc-scale radio emission and may lead to the disruption of the cluster cool core, Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics Typos and references corrected

Diffuse radio emission in galaxy clusters, and their connection with cluster mergers, are still debated. We seek to explore the internal dynamics of the radio halo cluster Abell 545. This cluster is also peculiar for hosting in its center a very bright, red, diffuse intracluster light due to an old, stellar population, so bright to be named as "star pile". Our analysis is based on redshift data for 110 galaxies. We identify 95 cluster members and analyze the cluster internal dynamics by combining galaxy velocities and positions. We also use both photometric and X-ray data. We estimate the cluster redshift, z=0.1580, a velocity dispersion of 1200 km/s, and ICM temperature kT_X~8 keV. Our optical and X-ray analyses detect substructures. Optical data reveal three main galaxy clumps (center, NNW, and NE), and possibly a fourth clump at South. There is not a dominant galaxy and the four brightest galaxies avoid the cluster core (>~0.4h distant from the cluster center) and are >~1500 km/s far from the mean cluster velocity. The analysis of the X-ray surface brightness distribution provides us evidence of a disturbed dynamical phase. Located in the star pile region there is the brightest galaxies of the cluster core (CBCG) and a very compact elliptical galaxy. We show that the star pile has a similar redshift to that of the CBCG. Both the star pile and the CBCG are at rest in the cluster rest frame. The emerging picture of Abell 545 is that of a massive, M(R<1.6 h_70^-1 Mpc)=1.1-1.8x10^15 h_70^-1 Msun, very complex cluster with merging occurring along two directions. A545 gives another proof in the favor of the connection between cluster merger and extended, diffuse radio emission. The star pile, likely due to the process of a brightest galaxy forming in the cluster core. Recent work based on a global measurement of the ICM properties find evidence for an increase of the iron abundance in galaxy clusters with temperature around 2-4 keV up to a value about 3 times larger than that typical of very hot clusters. We have started a study of the metal distribution in these objects from the sample of Baumgartner et al. (2005), aiming at resolving spatially the metal content of the ICM. We report here on a 42ks XMM observation of the first object of the sample, the cluster Abell 2028. The XMM observation reveals a complex structure of the cluster over scale of 300 kpc, showing an interaction between two sub-clusters in cometary-like configurations. At the leading edges of the two substructures cold fronts have been detected. The core of the main subcluster is likely hosting a cool corona. We show that a one-component fit for this region returns a biased high metallicity. This inverse iron bias is due to the behavior of the fitting code in shaping the Fe-L complex. In presence of a multi-temperature structure of the ICM, the best-fit metallicity is artificially higher when the projected spectrum is modeled with a single temperature component and it is not related to the presence of both Fe-L and Fe-K emission lines in the spectrum. After accounting for the bias, the overall abundance of the cluster is consistent with the one typical of hotter, more massive clusters. We caution the interpretation of high abundances inferred when fitting a single thermal component to spectra derived from relatively large apertures in 3-4 keV clusters, because the inverse iron bias can be present. We use XMM-Newton data to carry out a detailed study of the Si, Fe and Ni abundances in the cool cores of a representative sample of 26 local clusters. We have performed a careful evaluation of the systematic uncertainties related to the instruments, the plasma codes and the spectral modeling finding that the major source of uncertainty is in the plasma codes. Our Si, Fe, Ni, Si/Fe and Ni/Fe distributions feature only moderate spreads (from 20% to 30%) around their mean values strongly suggesting similar enrichment processes at work in all our cluster cores. Our sample averaged Si/Fe ratio is comparable to those measured in samples of groups and high luminosity ellipticals implying that the enrichment process in ellipticals, dominant galaxies in groups and BCGs in clusters is quite similar. Although our Si/Fe and Ni/Fe abundance ratios are fairly well constrained, the large uncertainties in the supernovae yields prevent us from making a firm assessment of the relative contribution of type Ia and core-collapsed supernovae to the enrichment process. We present the final data from the spectroscopic survey of the ROSAT-ESO Flux-Limited X-ray (REFLEX) catalog of galaxy clusters. The REFLEX survey covers 4.24 steradians (34% of the entire sky) below a declination of 2.5 deg and at high Galactic latitude (|b| > 20 deg). The REFLEX catalog includes 447 entries with a median redshift of 0.08 and is better than 90% complete to a limiting flux fx = 3x10^{-12} erg s^{-1} cm^{-2} (0.1 to 2.4 keV), representing the largest statistically homogeneous sample of clusters drawn from the ROSAT All-Sky Survey (RASS) to date. Here we describe the details of the spectroscopic observations carried out at the ESO 1.5 m, 2.2 m, and 3.6 m telescopes, as well as the data reduction and redshift measurement techniques. The spectra typically cover the wavelength range 3600-7500 A at a FWHM resolution of ~14 A, and the measured redshifts have a total rms error of ~100 km s^{-1}. In total we present 1406 new galaxy redshifts in 192 clusters, most of which previously did not have any redshift measured. Finally, the luminosity/redshift distributions of the cluster sample and a comparison to the no-evolution expectations from the cluster X-ray luminosity function are presented., Comment: 16 pages, 8 figures (with multiple PS files) at low resolution due to size limits. The photo-luminescence features of Ge-oxygen defect centers in a 100nm thick Ge-doped silica film on a pure silica substrate were investigated by looking at the emission spectra and time decay detected under synchrotron radiation excitation in the 10-300 K temperature range. This center exhibits two luminescence bands centered at 4.3eV and 3.2eV associated with its de-excitation from singlet (S1) and triplet (T1) states, respectively, that are linked by an intersystem crossing process. The comparison with results obtained from a bulk Ge-doped silica sample evidences that the efficiency of the intersystem crossing rate depends on the properties of the matrix embedding the Ge-oxygen defect centers, being more effective in the film than in the bulk counterpart., Comment: 10 pages, 3 figures, in press on J. We studied the optical absorption induced by 4.7eV pulsed laser radiation on Ge-doped a-SiO2 synthesized by a sol-gel technique. The absorption spectra in the ultraviolet spectral range were measured during and after the end of irradiation with an in situ technique, evidencing the growth of an absorption signal whose profile is characterized by two main peaks near 4.5eV and 5.7eV and whose shape depends on time. Electron spin resonance measurements performed ex situ a few hours after the end of exposure permit to complete the information acquired by optical absorption by detection of the paramagnetic Ge(1) and Ge-E' centers laser-induced in the samples., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures

In this paper we present the analysis of Beppo-SAX observations of the cluster pairs A2061-A2067 and A2122-A2124, located in the Corona Borealis supercluster, which have been selected as candidate merging clusters. The aim of this work is to study the physics of the intracluster medium and to look for the possible presence of merging signatures. We derived the global temperatures and abundances and the temperature profiles and maps for these clusters. We do not find any significant evidence of interaction between the clusters forming the pairs, but we detect a candidate shock inside A2061. On the basis of the X-ray and optical properties of this cluster we propose a scenario in which a group is falling inside A2061. This interaction is in the phase in which the cores have not encountered yet and in which the formation of a shock is expected., Comment: 14 pages, 17 encapsulated figures, MNRAS in press

We present the catalogue of the REFLEX Cluster Survey providing information on the X-ray properties, redshifts, and some identification details of the clusters in the REFLEX sample. The catalogue describes a statistically complete X-ray flux-limited sample of 447 galaxy clusters above an X-ray flux of 3 10(-12) erg /s/cm**2 (0.1 to 2.4 keV) in an area of 4.24 ster in the southern sky. The cluster candidates were first selected by their X-ray emission in the ROSAT-All Sky Survey and subsequently spectroscopically identified in the frame of an ESO key programme. In addition to the cluster catalogue we also describe the complete selection criteria as a function of the sky position and the conversion functions used to analyse the X-ray data. These are essential for the precise statistical analysis of the large-scale cluster distribution. This data set is at present the largest, statistically complete X-ray galaxy cluster sample. Together with these data set we also provide for the first time the full three-dimensional selection function. Numerical hydro-N-body simulations are very important tools for making theoretical predictions for the formation of galaxy clusters. They show that the atmospheres of clusters of galaxies have quite complex angular and thermal structures. The full understanding of the physical processes behind these features can be only achieved by direct comparison of observations to hydro-N-body simulations. Although simple in principle, these comparisons are not always trivial. In fact, real data are convolved with the instrument response which may substantially influence the apparent properties of the studied features. To overcome this problem we build the software package X-MAS devoted to simulate X-ray observations of galaxy clusters obtained from hydro-N-body simulations. In this paper we present how this software package works and discuss its application to the simulation of Chandra ACIS-S3 observations. We compare some of the main physical properties of the input data to the ones derived from simulated observations after performing a standard imaging and spectral analysis. We show that, if the thermal structure of the cluster along a particular line of sight is quite complex, the projected spectroscopic temperature obtained from the observation is significantly lower than the emission-weighed value inferred directly from hydrodynamical simulation. This paper presents a new technique for reconstructing the spatial distributions of hydrogen, temperature and metal abundance of a galaxy cluster. These quantities are worked out from the X-ray spectrum, modeled starting from few analytical functions describing their spatial distributions. These functions depend upon some parameters, determined by fitting the model to the observed spectrum. We have implemented this technique as a new model in the XSPEC software analysis package. We describe the details of the method, and apply it to work out the structure of the cluster A1795. We combine the observation of three satellites, exploiting the high spatial resolution of Chandra for the cluster core, the wide collecting area of XMM-Newton for the intermediate regions and the large field of view of Beppo-SAX for the outer regions. We also test the validity and precision of our method by i) comparing its results with those from a geometrical deprojection, ii) examining the spectral residuals at different radii of the cluster and iii) reprojecting the unfolded profiles and comparing them directly to the measured quantities. Our analytical method yields the parameters defining the spatial functions directly from the spectra. Their explicit knowledge allows a straightforward derivation of other indirect physical quantities like the gravitating mass, as well as a fast and easy estimate of the profiles uncertainties., Comment: 24 pages, 11 figures, 3 tables; emulateapj; accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal

We present a long BeppoSAX observation of Abell 754 that reports a nonthermal excess with respect to the thermal emission at energies greater than ~45 keV. A VLA radio observation at 1.4 GHz definitely confirms the existence of diffuse radio emission in the central region of the cluster, previously suggested by images at 74 and 330 MHz (Kassim et al 2001), and reports additional features. Besides, our observation determines a steeper radio halo spectrum in the 330-1400 MHz frequency range with respect to the spectrum detected at lower frequencies, indicating the presence of a spectral cutoff. The presence of a radio halo in A754, considered the prototype of a merging cluster, reinforces the link between formation of Mpc-scale radio regions and very recent or current merger processes. The radio results combined with the hard X-ray excess detected by BeppoSAX give information on the origin of the electron population responsible for nonthermal phenomena in galaxy clusters. We discuss also the possibility that 26W20, a tailed radio galaxy with BL Lac characteristics located in the field of view of the PDS, could be responsible for the observed nonthermal hard X-ray emission., Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures; Astronomy & Astrophysics, in press
