It was recently found that connection coefficients of the Heun equation can be derived in closed form using crossing symmetry in two-dimensional Liouville theory via the Nekrasov-Shatashvili functions. In this work, we systematize this approach to second-order linear ODEs of Fuchsian type, which arise in the description of N = 2, four-dimensional quiver gauge theories. After presenting the general procedure, we focus on the specific case of Fuchsian equations with five regular singularities and present some applications to black hole perturbation theory. First, we consider a massive scalar perturbation of the Schwarzschild black hole in AdS7. Next, we analyze vector type perturbations of the Reissner-Nordstr\"om-AdS5 black hole. We also discuss the implications of our results in the context of the AdS/CFT correspondence and present explicit results in the large spin limit, where we make connection with the light-cone bootstrap. Furthermore, using the spectral network technology, we identify the region of the moduli space in Seiberg-Witten theory that is relevant for the study of black hole quasinormal modes. Our results suggest that, in some cases, this region corresponds to the strong-coupling regime, highlighting the potential applicability of the conformal GMN TBA framework to address scenarios where the gravitational dictionary implies that the instanton counting parameters are not parametrically small., Comment: 45 pages

We study extremal and integrated correlators of half-BPS operators in four-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=2$ SQCD and $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM with $SU(3)$ gauge group. We focus on the large R-charge sector where the number of operators insertions becomes very large. In this regime, we demonstrate that the correlators are described by a combination of Wishart and Jacobi matrix models, coupled in a non-trivial way. The size of the matrices in each model corresponds to the maximal number of insertions for each of the two single trace generators. This dual matrix model representation allows us to extract the behavior of the correlators at weak and strong coupling in a 't Hooft-like double scaling limit, including nonperturbative corrections. It is well established that the spectral analysis of canonically quantized four-dimensional Seiberg-Witten curves can be systematically studied via the Nekrasov-Shatashvili functions. In this paper, we explore another aspect of the relation between $\mathcal{N}=2$ supersymmetric gauge theories in four dimensions and operator theory. Specifically, we study an example of an integral operator associated with Painlev\'e equations and whose spectral traces are related to correlation functions of the 2d Ising model. This operator does not correspond to a canonically quantized Seiberg-Witten curve, but its kernel can nevertheless be interpreted as the density matrix of an ideal Fermi gas. Adopting the approach of Tracy and Widom, we provide an explicit expression for its eigenfunctions via an $\mathrm{O}(2)$ matrix model. We then show that these eigenfunctions are computed by surface defects in $\mathrm{SU}(2)$ super Yang-Mills in the self-dual phase of the $\Omega$-background. Our result also yields a strong coupling expression for such defects which resums the instanton expansion. We study black hole linear perturbation theory in a four-dimensional Schwarzschild (anti) de Sitter background. When dealing with a positive cosmological constant, the corresponding spectral problem is solved systematically via the Nekrasov-Shatashvili functions or, equivalently, classical Virasoro conformal blocks. However, this approach can be more complicated to implement for certain perturbations if the cosmological constant is negative. For these cases, we propose an alternative method to set up perturbation theory for both small and large black holes in an analytical manner. Our analysis reveals a new underlying recursive structure that involves multiple polylogarithms. We focus on gravitational, electromagnetic, and conformally coupled scalar perturbations subject to Dirichlet and Robin boundary conditions. The computation of the partition function in certain quantum field theories, such as those of the Argyres-Douglas or Minahan-Nemeschansky type, is problematic due to the lack of a Lagrangian description. In this paper, we use the holomorphic anomaly equation to derive the gravitational corrections to the prepotential of such theories at rank one by deforming them from the conformal point. In the conformal limit, we find a general formula for the partition function as a sum of hypergeometric functions. We show explicit results for the round sphere and the Nekrasov-Shatashvili phases of the $\Omega$ background. The first case is relevant for the derivation of extremal correlators in flat space, whereas the second one has interesting applications for the study of anharmonic oscillators., Comment: 37 pages, references added

We consider the Topological String/Spectral theory duality on toric Calabi-Yau threefolds obtained from the resolution of the cone over the $Y^{N,0}$ singularity. Assuming Kyiv formula, we demonstrate this duality in a special regime thanks to an underlying connection between spectral determinants of quantum mirror curves and the non-autonomous (q)-Toda system. We further exploit this link to connect small and large time expansions in Toda equations. In particular we provide an explicit expression for their tau functions at large time in terms of a strong coupling version of irregular $W_N$ conformal blocks at $c=N-1$. These are related to a special class of multi-cut matrix models which describe the strong coupling regime of four dimensional, $\mathcal{N}=2$ $SU(N)$ super Yang-Mills., Comment: 68 pages. v2: references and some technical details added

We present an exact formula for the thermal scalar two-point function in four-dimensional holographic conformal field theories. The problem of finding it reduces to the analysis of the wave equation on the AdS-Schwarzschild background. The two-point function is computed from the connection coefficients of the Heun equation, which can be expressed in terms of the Nekrasov-Shatashvili partition function of an SU(2) supersymmetric gauge theory with four fundamental hypermultiplets. The result is amenable to numerical evaluation upon truncating the number of instantons in the convergent expansion of the partition function. We also examine it analytically in various limits. At large spin the instanton expansion of the thermal two-point function directly maps to the light-cone bootstrap analysis of the heavy-light four-point function. Using this connection, we compute the OPE data of heavy-light double-twist operators. We propose a connection between 3d-5d exponential networks and exact WKB for difference equations associated to five dimensional Seiberg-Witten curves, or equivalently, to quantum mirror curves to toric Calabi-Yau threefolds $X$: the singularities in the Borel planes of local solutions to such difference equations correspond to central charges of 3d-5d BPS KK-modes. It follows that there should be distinguished local solutions of the difference equation in each domain of the complement of the exponential network, and these solutions jump at the walls of the network. We verify and explore this picture in two simple examples of 3d-5d systems, corresponding to taking the toric Calabi-Yau $X$ to be either $\mathbb{C}^3$ or the resolved conifold. We provide the full list of local solutions in each sector of the Borel plane and in each domain of the complement of the exponential network, and find that local solutions in disconnected domains correspond to non-perturbative open topological string amplitudes on $X$ with insertions of branes at different positions of the toric diagram. We also study the Borel summation of the closed refined topological string free energy on $X$ and the corresponding non-perturbative effects, finding that central charges of 5d BPS KK-modes are related to the singularities in the Borel plane.

We study in detail the Schr\"{o}dinger equation corresponding to the four dimensional $SU(2)$ $\mathcal{N}=2$ SQCD theory with one flavour. We calculate the Voros symbols, or quantum periods, in four different ways: Borel summation of the WKB series, direct computation of Wronskians of exponentially decaying solutions, the TBA equations of Gaiotto-Moore-Neitzke/Gaiotto, and instanton counting. We make computations by all of these methods, finding good agreement. We also study the exact quantization condition for the spectrum, and we compute the Fredholm determinant of the inverse of the Schr\"odinger operator using the TS/ST correspondence and Zamolodchikov's TBA, again finding good agreement. In addition, we explore two aspects of the relationship between singularities of the Borel transformed WKB series and BPS states: BPS states of the 4d theory are related to singularities in the Borel transformed WKB series for the quantum periods, and BPS states of a coupled 2d+4d system are related to singularities in the Borel transformed WKB series for local solutions of the Schr\"odinger equation., Comment: 63 pages, 18 figures

We develop a self-consistent approach to study the spectral properties of a class of quantum mechanical operators by using the knowledge about monodromies of $2\times 2$ linear systems (Riemann-Hilbert correspondence). Our technique applies to a variety of problems, though in this paper we only analyse in detail two examples. First we review the case of the (modified) Mathieu operator, which corresponds to a certain linear system on the sphere and makes contact with the Painlev\'e $\mathrm{III}_3$ equation. Then we extend the analysis to the 2-particle elliptic Calogero-Moser operator, which corresponds to a linear system on the torus. By using the Kiev formula for the isomonodromic tau functions, we obtain the spectrum of such operators in terms of self-dual Nekrasov functions ($\epsilon_1+\epsilon_2=0$). Through blowup relations, we also find Nekrasov-Shatashvili type of quantizations ($\epsilon_2=0$). In the case of the torus with one regular singularity we obtain certain results which are interesting by themselves. Namely, we derive blowup equations (filling some gaps in the literature) and we relate them to the bilinear form of the isomonodromic deformation equations. We revisit the confinement/deconfinement transition in $\mathcal{N}=4$ super Yang-Mills (SYM) theory and its relation to the Hawking-Page transition in gravity. Recently there has been substantial progress on counting the microstates of 1/16-BPS extremal black holes. However, there is presently a mismatch between the Hawking-Page transition and its avatar in $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM. This led to speculations about the existence of new gravitational saddles that would resolve the mismatch. Here we exhibit a phenomenon in complex matrix models which we call "delayed deconfinement". It turns out that when the action is complex, due to destructive interference, tachyonic modes do not necessarily condense. We demonstrate this phenomenon in ordinary integrals, a simple unitary matrix model, and finally in the context of $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM. Delayed deconfinement implies a first-order transition, in contrast to the more familiar cases of higher-order transitions in unitary matrix models. We determine the deconfinement line and find remarkable agreement with the prediction of gravity. On the way, we derive some results about the Gross-Witten-Wadia model with complex couplings. We present new analytic results on black hole perturbation theory. Our results are based on a novel relation to four-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=2$ supersymmetric gauge theories. We propose an exact version of Bohr-Sommerfeld quantization conditions on quasinormal mode frequencies in terms of the Nekrasov partition function in a particular phase of the $\Omega$-background. Our quantization conditions also enable us to find exact expressions of eigenvalues of spin-weighted spheroidal harmonics. We test the validity of our conjecture by comparing against known numerical results for Kerr black holes as well as for Schwarzschild black holes. We study the correlation functions of Coulomb branch operators of four-dimensional $\mathcal{N} = 2$ Superconformal Field Theories (SCFTs). We focus on rank-one theories, such as the SU(2) gauge theory with four fundamental hypermultiplets. "Extremal" correlation functions, involving exactly one anti-chiral operator, are perhaps the simplest nontrivial correlation functions in four-dimensional Quantum Field Theory. We show that the large charge limit of extremal correlators is captured by a "dual" description which is a chiral random matrix model of the Wishart-Laguerre type. This gives an analytic handle on the physics in some particular excited states. In the limit of large random matrices we find the physics of a non-relativistic axion-dilaton effective theory. The random matrix model also admits a 't Hooft expansion in which the matrix is taken to be large and simultaneously the coupling is taken to zero. This explains why the extremal correlators of SU(2) gauge theory obey a nontrivial double scaling limit in states of large charge. We give an exact solution for the first two orders in the 't Hooft expansion of the random matrix model and compare with expectations from effective field theory, previous weak coupling results, and we analyze the non-perturbative terms in the strong 't Hooft coupling limit. Finally, we apply the random matrix theory techniques to study extremal correlators in rank-1 Argyres-Douglas theories. We study various non-perturbative approaches to the quantization of the Seiberg-Witten curve of ${\cal N}=2$, $SU(2)$ super Yang-Mills theory, which is closely related to the modified Mathieu operator. The first approach is based on the quantum WKB periods and their resurgent properties. We show that these properties are encoded in the TBA equations of Gaiotto-Moore-Neitzke determined by the BPS spectrum of the theory, and we relate the Borel-resummed quantum periods to instanton calculus. In addition, we use the TS/ST correspondence to obtain a closed formula for the Fredholm determinant of the modified Mathieu operator. The conventional Hamiltonian $H= p^2+ V_N(x)$, where the potential $V_N(x)$ is a polynomial of degree $N$, has been studied intensively since the birth of quantum mechanics. In some cases, its spectrum can be determined by combining the WKB method with resummation techniques. In this paper we point out that the deformed Hamiltonian $H=2 \cosh(p)+ V_N(x)$ is exactly solvable for any potential: a conjectural exact quantization condition, involving well-defined functions, can be written down in closed form, and determines the spectrum of bound states and resonances. In particular, no resummation techniques are needed. This Hamiltonian is obtained by quantizing the Seiberg-Witten curve of $\mathcal{N}=2$ Yang-Mills theory, and the exact quantization condition follows from the correspondence between spectral theory and topological strings, after taking a suitable four-dimensional limit. In this formulation, conventional quantum mechanics emerges in a scaling limit near the Argyres-Douglas superconformal point in moduli space. Although our deformed version of quantum mechanics is in many respects similar to the conventional version, it also displays new phenomena, like spontaneous parity symmetry breaking.

We show in details that the all-orders genus expansion of the two-cut Hermitian cubic matrix model reproduces the perturbative expansion of the $H_1$ Argyres-Douglas theory coupled to the $\Omega$ background. In the self-dual limit we use the Painlev\'e/gauge correspondence and we show that, after summing over all instanton sectors, the two-cut cubic matrix model computes the tau function of Painlev\'e II without taking any double scaling limit or adding any external fields. We decode such solution within the context of trans-series. We propose that the grand canonical topological string partition functions satisfy finite-difference equations in the closed string moduli. In the case of genus one mirror curve these are conjectured to be the q-difference Painlev\'e equations as in Sakai's classification. More precisely, we propose that the tau-functions of q-Painlev\'e equations are related to the grand canonical topological string partition functions on the corresponding geometry. In the toric cases we use topological string/spectral theory duality to give a Fredholm determinant representation for the above tau-functions in terms of the underlying quantum mirror curve. As a consequence, the zeroes of the tau-functions compute the exact spectrum of the associated quantum integrable systems. The TS/ST correspondence relates the spectral theory of certain quantum mechanical operators, to topological strings on toric Calabi-Yau threefolds. So far the correspondence has been formulated for real values of Planck's constant. In this paper we start to explore the validity of the correspondence when $\hbar$ takes complex values. We give evidence that, for threefolds associated to supersymmetric gauge theories, one can extend the correspondence and obtain exact quantization conditions for the operators. We also explore the correspondence for operators involving periodic potentials. We describe the magnetic phase of SU(N) $\mathcal{N}=2$ Super Yang-Mills theories in the self-dual Omega background in terms of a new class of multi-cut matrix models. These arise from a non-perturbative completion of topological strings in the dual four dimensional limit which engineers the gauge theory in the strongly coupled magnetic frame. Recently an exact duality between topological string and the spectral theory of operators constructed from mirror curves to toric Calabi-Yau threefolds has been proposed. At the same time an exact quantization condition for the cluster integrable systems associated to these geometries has been conjectured. It has been recently conjectured that the spectral determinants of operators associated to mirror curves can be expressed in terms of a generalization of theta functions, called quantum theta functions. In this paper we study the symplectic properties of these spectral determinants by expanding them around the point hbar=2pi, where the quantum theta functions become conventional theta functions. We find that they are modular invariant, order by order, and we give explicit expressions for the very first terms of the expansion. Our derivation requires a detailed understanding of the modular properties of topological string free energies in the Nekrasov-Shatashvili limit. We derive these properties in a diagrammatic form. We explore a new connection between Seiberg-Witten theory and quantum statistical systems by relating the dual partition function of SU(2) Super Yang-Mills theory in a self-dual Omega-background to the spectral determinant of an ideal Fermi gas. We show that the spectrum of this gas is encoded in the zeroes of the Painleve III tau function. In addition we find that the Nekrasov partition function on this background can be expressed as an O(2) matrix model. Our construction arises as a four-dimensional limit of a recently proposed conjecture relating topological strings and spectral theory. Recently, a correspondence has been proposed between spectral theory and topological strings on toric Calabi-Yau manifolds. In this paper we develop in detail this correspondence for mirror curves of higher genus, which display many new features as compared to the genus one case studied so far. Given a curve of genus g, our quantization scheme leads to g different trace class operators. Their spectral properties are encoded in a generalized spectral determinant, which is an entire function on the Calabi-Yau moduli space. We conjecture an exact expression for this spectral determinant in terms of the standard and refined topological string amplitudes. This conjecture provides a non-perturbative definition of the topological string on these geometries, in which the genus expansion emerges in a suitable 't Hooft limit of the spectral traces of the operators. In contrast to what happens in quantum integrable systems, our quantization scheme leads to a single quantization condition, which is elegantly encoded by the vanishing of a quantum-deformed theta function on the mirror curve. We illustrate our general theory by analyzing in detail the resolved C3/Z5 orbifold, which is the simplest toric Calabi-Yau manifold with a genus two mirror curve. The partition function of ABJ(M) theories on the three-sphere can be regarded as the canonical partition function of an ideal Fermi gas with a non-trivial Hamiltonian. We propose an exact expression for the spectral determinant of this Hamiltonian, which generalizes recent results obtained in the maximally supersymmetric case. As a consequence, we find an exact WKB quantization condition determining the spectrum which is in agreement with numerical results. In addition, we investigate the factorization properties and functional equations for our conjectured spectral determinants. We propose a general correspondence which associates a non-perturbative quantum-mechanical operator to a toric Calabi-Yau manifold, and we conjecture an explicit formula for its spectral determinant in terms of an M-theoretic version of the topological string free energy. As a consequence, we derive an exact quantization condition for the operator spectrum, in terms of the vanishing of a generalized theta function. The perturbative part of this quantization condition is given by the Nekrasov-Shatashvili limit of the refined topological string, but there are non-perturbative corrections determined by the conventional topological string. We analyze in detail the cases of local P2, local P1xP1 and local F1. In all these cases, the predictions for the spectrum agree with the existing numerical results. We also show explicitly that our conjectured spectral determinant leads to the correct spectral traces of the corresponding operators. Physically, our results provide a non-perturbative formulation of topological strings on toric Calabi-Yau manifolds, in which the genus expansion emerges as a 't Hooft limit of the spectral traces. Since the spectral determinant is an entire function on moduli space, it leads to a background independent formulation of the theory. We show that, in ABJ(M) theories with N=8 supersymmetry, the non-perturbative sector of the partition function on the three-sphere simplifies drastically. Due to this simplification, we are able to write closed form expressions for the grand potential of these theories, which determines the full large N asymptotics. Moreover, we find explicit formulae for the generating functionals of their partition functions, for all values of the rank N of the gauge group: they involve Jacobi theta functions on the spectral curve associated to the planar limit. Exact quantization conditions for the spectral problem of the Fermi gas are then obtained from the vanishing of the theta function. We use the AdS/CFT correspondence to study the resummation of a perturbative genus expansion appearing in the type II superstring dual of ABJM theory. Although the series is Borel summable, its Borel resummation does not agree with the exact non-perturbative answer due to the presence of complex instantons. The same type of behavior appears in the WKB quantization of the quartic oscillator in Quantum Mechanics, which we analyze in detail as a toy model for the string perturbation series. We conclude that, in these examples, Borel summability is not enough for extracting non-perturbative information, due to non-perturbative effects associated to complex instantons. We also analyze the resummation of the genus expansion for topological string theory on local $\mathbb P^1 \times \mathbb P^1$, which is closely related to ABJM theory. In this case, the non-perturbative answer involves membrane instantons computed by the refined topological string, which are crucial to produce a well-defined result. Some matrix models admit, on top of the usual 't Hooft expansion, an M-theory-like expansion, i.e. an expansion at large N but where the rest of the parameters are fixed, instead of scaling with N. These models, which we call M-theoretic matrix models, appear in the localization of Chern-Simons-matter theories, and also in two-dimensional statistical physics. Generically, their partition function receives non-perturbative corrections which are not captured by the 't Hooft expansion. In this paper, we discuss general aspects of these type of matrix integrals and we analyze in detail two different examples. The first one is the matrix model computing the partition function of N=4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory in three dimensions with one adjoint hypermultiplet and N_f fundamentals, which has a conjectured M-theory dual, and which we call the N_f matrix model. The second one, which we call the polymer matrix model, computes form factors of the 2d Ising model and is related to the physics of 2d polymers. In both cases we determine their exact planar limit. In the N_f matrix model, the planar free energy reproduces the expected behavior of the M-theory dual. We show that, in local Calabi-Yau manifolds, the topological open string partition function transforms as a wavefunction under modular transformations. Our derivation is based on the topological recursion for matrix models, and it generalizes in a natural way the known result for the closed topological string sector. The partition function on the three-sphere of ABJM theory and its generalizations has, at large N, a universal, subleading logarithmic term. Inspired by the success of one-loop quantum gravity for computing the logarithmic corrections to black hole entropy, we try to reproduce this universal term by a one-loop calculation in Euclidean eleven-dimensional supergravity on AdS_4 \times X_7.
