To simulate the expansion of the matter created in relativistic nuclear collisions, codes in 3+1 dimensions are used and we are developing a new one. To benchmark such codes, the Sod's shock tube is often used. A closely related problem is the one-dimensional expansion of a gas into vacuum. The interplay between shear and bulk viscosities on the flow harmonics, $v_n$'s, at RHIC is investigated using the newly developed relativistic 2+1 hydrodynamical code v-USPhydro that includes bulk and shear viscosity effects both in the hydrodynamic evolution and also at freeze-out. While shear viscosity is known to attenuate the flow harmonics, we find that the inclusion of bulk viscosity decreases the shear viscosity-induced suppression of the flow harmonics bringing them closer to their values in ideal hydrodynamical calculations. Depending on the value of the bulk viscosity to entropy density ratio, $\zeta/s$, in the quark-gluon plasma, the bulk viscosity-driven suppression of shear viscosity effects on the flow harmonics may require a re-evaluation of the previous estimates of the shear viscosity to entropy density ratio, $\eta/s$, of the quark-gluon plasma previously extracted by comparing hydrodynamic calculations to heavy ion data., Comment: 36 pages, 12 figures, references added

A unified description of the near-side and away-side structures observed in two-particle correlations as function of delta eta-delta phi is proposed for low to moderate transverse momentum. In a recent paper, the hydrodynamic code NEXSPheRIO was used in conjunction with STAR analysis methods to study two-particle correlations as function of Delta-eta and Delta-phi. The effects of fluctuating initial conditions are studied in the context of relativistic heavy ion collisions where a rapidly evolving system is formed. Two particle correlation analysis is applied to events generated with the NEXSPHERIO hydrodynamic code, starting with fluctuating non-smooth initial conditions (IC). Results show that the non-smoothness in the IC survives the hydro-evolution and can be seen as topological features of the angular correlation function of the particles emerging from the evolving system. A long range correlation is observed in the longitudinal direction and in the azimuthal direction a double peak structure is observed in the opposite direction to the trigger particle. This analysis provides clear evidence that these are signatures of the combined effect of tubular structures present in the IC and the proceeding collective dynamics of the hot and dense medium.

We show effects of the event-by-event fluctuation of the initial conditions (IC) in hydrodynamic description of high-energy nuclear collisions on some observables. Such IC produce not only fluctuations in observables but, due to their bumpy structure, several non-trivial effects appear. They enhance production of isotropically distributed high-pT particles, making v2 smaller there. Also, they reduce v2 in the forward and backward regions where the global matter density is smaller, so where such effects become more efficacious. A comparison is made between results obtained using smooth initial conditions and event-by-event initial conditions in the hydrodynamical description of relativistic nuclear collisions. Some new results on directed flow are also included.

We show effects of granular structure of the initial conditions (IC) of hydrodynamic description of high-energy nucleus-nucleus collisions on some observables, especially on the elliptic-flow parameter v2. Such a structure enhances production of isotropically distributed high-pT particles, making v2 smaller there. Elliptic flow at RHIC is computed event-by-event with NeXSPheRIO. We show that when symmetry of the particle distribution in relation to the reaction plane is assumed, as usually done in the experimental extraction of elliptic flow, there is a disagreement between the true and reconstructed elliptic flows (15-30% for $\eta$=0, 30% for $p_\perp$=0.5 GeV). We suggest a possible way to take into account the asymmetry and get good agreement between these elliptic flows.

Elliptic flow at RHIC is computed event-by-event with NeXSPheRIO. Reasonable agreement with experimental results on $v_2(\eta)$ is obtained. Effects of lattice-QCD-inspired equations of state and continuous emission on some observables are discussed, by solving a 3D hydrodynamics. The particle multiplicity as well as v2 are found to increase in the mid-rapidity. A survey of various mechanisms for particle emission in hydrodynamics is presented. First, in the case of sudden freeze out, the problem of negative contributions in the Cooper-Frye formula and ways out are presented. Then the separate chemical and thermal freeze out scenario is described and the necessity of its inclusion in a hydrodynamical code is discussed. Finally, we show how to formulate continuous particle emission in hydrodynamics and discuss extensively its consistency with data. We point out in various cases that the interpretation of data is quite influenced by the choice of the particle emission mechanism.

Within hydrodynamic approach, we study the Bose-Einstein correlation of identical pions by taking into account both event-by-event fluctuating initial conditions and continuous pion emission during the whole development of the hot and dense matter formed in high-energy collisions. Considerable deviations occur, compared to the usual hydro calculations with smooth initial conditions and a sudden freeze-out on a well defined hypersurface. Comparison with data at RHIC shows that, despite rather rough approximation we used here, this description can give account of the $m_T$ dependence of $R_L$ and $R_s$ and improves considerably the one for $R_o$ with respect to the usual version., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

We study the behaviour of the effective temperature for K$^+$ in several energy domains. For this purpose, we apply the recently developed SPheRIO code for hydrodynamics in 3+1 dimensions, using both Landau-type compact initial conditions and spatially more spread ones. We show that initial conditions given in small volume, like Landau-type ones, are unable to reproduce the effective temperature together with other data (multiplicities and rapidity distributions). These quantities can be reproduced altogether only when using a large initial volume with an appropriate velocity distribution., Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures

We show that a hydrodynamical model with continuous particle emission instead of sudden freeze out may explain both the observed strange particle and pion abundances and transverse mass spectra for light projectile at SPS energy. From an analysis of various types of data obtained in relativistic nuclear collisions, the following picture has emerged in thermal and hydrodynamical descriptions: as the fluid expands and cools, particles first undergo a chemical freeze out at T_ch.~160-200 MeV then a thermal freeze out at T_th~100-140 MeV. In this paper we show how to incorporate these separate freeze outs consistently in a hydrodynamical code via a modified equation of state (general case) or via a modified Cooper-Frye formula (particular case of T_ch. close to T_th. or few particle species undergoing early chemical freeze-out). The modified equation of state causes faster cooling and may have sizable impact on the predicted values of observables., Comment: version to appear in Phys.Rev.C

Freeze out of particles across a space-time hypersurface is discussed in kinetic models. The calculation of final momentum distribution of emitted particles is described for freeze out surfaces, with spacelike normals. We study the effects of strict conservation laws and the problem of negative contributions to final momentum distribution during the freeze out through 3-dimensional hypersurfaces with space-like normal. We study some suggested solutions for this problem, and demonstrate it on one example.

In order to actually see the hadron-quark transition happening in a neutron star, we point out and study two static conditions (the transition hadronic density must be lower than the neutron star maximum hadronic density; the neutron star mass at the transition hadronic density must be in the observed range, of order 1.4 solar mass) and one dynamical condition (nucleation must occur during the star lifetime). We find that the mini-colapse acompanying the transition from metastable hadronic matter to quark matter may be relevant to explain macro-glitches and gamma ray bursts, but that the mecanism increasing the star density must be relatively fast, e.g. accretion but not slowing down. This rules out a scenario for gamma ray bursts proposed recently., Comment: 13 pages, 1 figure, to appear in Ap. J

We show that a hadron gas model with continuous particle emission instead of freeze out may solve some of the problems (high values of the freeze out density and specific net charge) that one encounters in the latter case when studying strange particle ratios such as those by WA85. This underlines the necessity to understand better particle emission in hydrodynamics to be able to analyze data.
