Abstract

Recent progress in the realm of imaging technologies has swiftly disseminated fresh methodologies for representing objects, broadening the horizons for scholars such as art historians, archaeologists, conservators, and conservation scientists. Reflectance Transformation Imaging (RTI) and three-dimensional (3D) modeling via Structure from Motion (SfM) have rapidly gained popularity and are being employed by a wide range of users, expanding the possibilities for understanding objects of material cultural heritage from different perspectives. This paper explores the outcomes achieved through the application of these techniques to gain deeper insights into the surface of a bas-relief within a confined space. This methodology enhanced our understanding of the original sandstone surfaces of the bas-relief by integrating RTI and 3D visualization, thereby acquiring a novel investigative tool with enhanced illumination possibilities. A data fusion approach is proposed using photogrammetry to produce a Virtual RTI (V-RTI). In the case study reported in this paper, focusing on one inner wall of the chapel of Ellesiya at the Museo Egizio of Turin, V-RTI was employed to obtain useful surface information in a context where conventional RTI would have been impossible to achieve. Finally, the study compares the different techniques through direct qualitative and quantitative analysis, highlighting possible future developments from both instrumental and methodological points of view. 16. Nanostructure Based Sensors For Gas Sensing : From Devices To Systems

Abstract

The development of solid state gas sensors based on microtransducers and nanostructured sensing materials is the key point in the design of portable measurement systems able to reach sensing and identification performance comparable with analytical ones. In such a context several efforts must be spent of course in the development of the sensing material, but also in the choice of the transducer mechanism and its structure, in the electrical characterization of the performance and in the design of suitable measurement setups. This call for papers invites researchers worldwide to report about their novel results on the most recent advances and overview in design and measurements for applications in gas sensors, along with their relevant features and technological aspects. Original research papers are welcome (but not limited) on all aspects that focus on the most recent advances in: (i) basic principles and modeling of gas and VOCs sensors; (ii) new gas sensor principles and technologies; (iii) Characterization and measurements methodologies; (iv) transduction and sampling systems; (vi) package optimization; (vi) gas sensor based systems and applications.

Abstract

Archaeological bronzes (Cu-Sn alloys) might be different in composition and these variabilities lead to a different interaction with the environment and, if they were buried, with several chemical elements present in soils. Generally, the result is the presence of complex corrosion products layers on the Cu-based artefacts which might be protective or reactive (and so dangerous) for the artefacts preservation itself. Moreover, the corrosion products can also be unwanted because hide the drawings present/imprinted on the original metal surfaces. So, for several reasons, it can be necessary to remove the unwanted corrosion products: laser-cleaning procedure is one of the most selective cleaning technique used. The main goal of this work was to assess possible laser-cleaning induced surface effects on different archaeological bronzes corrosion products structures through a systematic and multi-technique compositional study. Chemical-physical characterisations were performed on laser-cleaned and non-cleaned types of Cu-Sn archaeological corrosion products structures. The results show the efficiency and the low-invasiveness of the treatment.
